Additional Title: Caltrans Earthquake History of Elias
Avila
Series Title: Loma Prieta Oral History Project
Description: In the wake of the October 17, 1989 Loma
Prieta Earthquake, Caltrans commissioned an oral history
project to document the personal and professional
experiences of Caltrans employees who worked to restore
the State's damaged transportation system.
This recording is important because it captures the
personal memories of Elias (Eli) Avila after the Loma
Prieta Earthquake on October 17, 1989. At the time of the
earthquake he was Landscape Maintenance worker with
Caltrans at the Hercules Yard. This recording captures
what he was doing the time the earthquake hit, then after
the earthquake he went to the base station that was set
up at the San Leandro yard and went to assist with the
cleanup at the Cypress structure. Part of this oral
history includes descriptions of people being rescued
from the Cypress structure, some alive and some deceased.
Avila mentions how the upper management at the command
posts would argue and not cooperate, however the Caltrans
workers from other yards worked together well. Also, the
general public and Red Cross were extremely generous. He
had some guilt that he didn't assist enough with the
rescues of people who were trapped in the Cypress
structure.
