"Roman Landholding in Asia Minor," by Thomas Robert
Shannon Broughton, from Transactions and Proceedings of
the American Philological Association, Vol. 65 (1934),
pp. 207-239, in 34 searchable pdf pages. The article
focuses on the 1st-3rd centuries A.D. Wikipedia has a
group of entries[1] relating to the topic. Internet
Archive has a selection of works[2] about Rome and Asia
Minor in this period. Also available at Internet Archive
is Broughton's magnum opus, Magistrates of the Roman
Republic.[3] | |
From the Introduction:
"According to the usual explanation the imperial estates
of Asia Minor were derived in large part directly from
crown or temple lands. In this article a study of the
evidence by regions and periods leads to the conclusion
that in all parts of Asia Minor, and particularly in the
provinces acquired under the republic, the development of
the estates was in general more indirect and complicated
and more gradual than this explanation allows, and that a
large portion of the imperial land originated in Roman
and native private estates which came to the emperors by
confiscation and inheritance."
