Recording made by the Minnesota Branch of the Women's
International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF) of
Maud C. Stockwell reading a speech she had given at the
1954 Jane Addams Tea. Stockwell recalls Jane Addams' life
and work. Her main passions were her settlement work at
Hull House and working for world peace through WILPF.
Stockwell speaks of the founding of Hull House. She
recalls her dinner at Addams' home during WILPF's 1923
National Board Meeting in Chicago. At the 1926 Dublin
Congress she was invited by Addams on a day trip to the
countryside. She recalls Addams' tactfulness and how
necessary that skill was during international congresses
where language barriers could lead to misunderstandings.
In 1915, Addams was recruited by Dr. Aletta Jacobs to
attend the International Congress of Women in the Hague
where Addams was voted the President of the new
International Committee of Women for Permanent Peace. In
1919 at the Zurich Conference, WILPF was officially
created and it's headquarters were established in Geneva.
Stockwell goes on to recall how the Minnesota Branch
joined WILPF.
