especially written for people learning
00:30:36[161] | |
English. Today on the program.
00:30:44[162] | |
We'll bring you stories along with Brian
let. Later Steve ember will present
00:30:51[163] | |
our American history series The Making of
00:30:54[164] | |
a nation but 1st. You can find
00:31:00[165] | |
a lot in popular culture about the generation
of young people called Millennial.
00:31:08[166] | |
Millennial are often described in
movies and television shows as feeling
00:31:14[167] | |
entitled they act as if they have
00:31:18[168] | |
a right to the good things in life many
millennia holes also are identified
00:31:24[169] | |
as jobless and more likely than other
young people to be living with one or
00:31:31[170] | |
both parents the youngest members of
this generation are in their middle
00:31:37[171] | |
twenties while the oldest are nearly
40 years old they lived through the
00:31:44[172] | |
Great Recession of 2007
to 2009 many are weighed
00:31:51[173] | |
down with debt from student loans
and have a hard time finding
00:31:56[174] | |
a good job in their field of study saw
00:32:00[175] | |
a more strong candidates for
such jobs but instead accepted
00:32:05[176] | |
a lower paying position today
those decisions and experiences
00:32:12[177] | |
continue to affect millions of
millennial Zz However some young
00:32:18[178] | |
adults within the millennial age group have
been able to succeed and done very well
00:32:26[179] | |
there is | |
00:32:26[180] | |
a name for these young men and
women mego enables Jason Dorsey is
00:32:33[181] | |
president and researcher at the
Center for generational kinetics
00:32:38[182] | |
a group based in Texas he told v.o.a.
00:32:43[183] | |
Mega kept working and tried pulling themselves
forward in the workforce during hard
00:32:50[184] | |
economic times. Dorsey added
that mega lineal are now further
00:32:57[185] | |
ahead compared to the rest of their
generation because they were still out there
00:33:02[186] | |
producing doing what they could
do to make it happen there is
00:33:07[187] | |
a big difference between the mega
lineal and what have been called.
00:33:14[188] | |
Melanie holes are members of the
generation that have still struggled
00:33:18[189] | |
professionally and are still working
on finding their place in life what we
00:33:25[190] | |
think is fascinating is that the group of
people that are most offended at work by
00:33:30[191] | |
millennial acting entitled are actually
other millennial who do not feel entitled
00:33:37[192] | |
Dorsey said they think the rest
of the generation is giving them
00:33:42[193] | |
a bad reputation of 29000 of pinioned
surveyed seems to suggest that
00:33:49[194] | |
may be the case the survey was
00:33:53[195] | |
a project of the Business Insider
website and morning console
00:33:58[196] | |
a privately held technology and
media company it found that many
00:34:04[197] | |
millennia old think they are doing better
than others in their generation it showed
00:34:11[198] | |
that 46 percent of them just think they are
somewhat or much better off financially
00:34:18[199] | |
than other members of their generation only
36 percent thought they are somewhat or
00:34:25[200] | |
much worse off about 37 percent
said not very good or not good at
00:34:32[201] | |
all when asked how they feel about
their finances experts say this
00:34:38[202] | |
shows that the reality for millennial may
not be quite as bad as what they are
00:34:44[203] | |
often told so why do some millennial
olds do well while other people in their
00:34:51[204] | |
age group did not. What we found is that
they were more resilient to often times
00:34:58[205] | |
in their career Dorsey noted they also
managed to keep working and building their
00:35:05[206] | |
networks and did whatever they could to
keep pushing themselves forward Dorsey
00:35:12[207] | |
added that millennial olds are likely to
place themselves into one group or the
00:35:17[208] | |
other he said that while
Madeleine he olls and | |
00:35:22[209] | |
a meal any ols share many experiences
the 2 groups are not likely to see
00:35:28[210] | |
themselves and each other.
00:35:46[211] | |
Ugandan poet Stella Nancy was
released and February after
00:35:53[212] | |
spending more than | |
00:35:54[213] | |
a year in prison for some words
she wrote on Facebook you
00:36:01[214] | |
gondolas government says those words
and salted president Yuri was 70
00:36:08[215] | |
while in prison Nancy wrote
00:36:11[216] | |
a book of poems called no roses
from my mouth her writings have
00:36:18[217] | |
influenced other people to use poetry
to express their political opinions
00:36:26[218] | |
now Uganda's government plans to
appeal her recent acquittal before
00:36:32[219] | |
her release and February Stella
Nancy was serving 18 months in
00:36:38[220] | |
a prison for cyber harassing
the Ugandan president she was
00:36:45[221] | |
jailed last year for writing on
Facebook in $28.00 teen that she wished
00:36:52[222] | |
most 70 had died as | |
00:36:54[223] | |
a fetus. She blamed him for her
country's many problems I sit
00:37:01[224] | |
on the prison beddings spread on the
floor lean against the wall and write
00:37:08[225] | |
whatever I please what freedom
to write Yancy said She | |
00:37:15[226] | |
added that her writings were often taken
by prison guards during body searches
00:37:22[227] | |
but she continued to write as
00:37:24[228] | |
a form of resistance after
her sentencing some Ugandan
00:37:31[229] | |
writers were afraid to criticize the
government free speech was quieted
00:37:39[230] | |
Yancey supporters were pleased by her
decision to use her poetry to take on
00:37:46[231] | |
politics but others are still
too frightened to publish
00:37:53[232] | |
Danson works for the Department of
literature at Mark hereright university
00:38:01[233] | |
he says he wrote | |
00:38:02[234] | |
a book that he decided not to publish because
he does not have the courage of Nancy
00:38:10[235] | |
She's our hero I think we shall
celebrate her one day there will
00:38:17[236] | |
come | |
00:38:17[237] | |
a time when we shall say Stella you
are the reason we are better governed
00:38:25[238] | |
because your fighting has given us
all these beautiful fruits he said
00:38:32[239] | |
Ugandan officials have repeatedly
detained Nancy for criticizing
00:38:39[240] | |
move 70 who has served as
president for 34 years.
00:38:46[241] | |
Although the high court cancelled the cyber
harassment charge against her Uganda's
00:38:53[242] | |
public prosecutor continues to say
that Nancy's Facebook post was

The government restrictions aimed at
slowing the spread of the new coronavirus
00:40:41[256] | |
appear to have led to major drops in
pollution levels in parts of China
00:40:49[257] | |
and Italy. Earlier this month
pollution observing satellites overt
00:40:55[258] | |
China discovered sharp decreases
in levels of nitrogen dioxide
00:41:03[259] | |
a gas that is mainly produced by
motor vehicles power plants and

Space agency NASA and the
European Space Agency or e.s.a.
00:41:23[262] | |
There is evidence that the change is at
least partly related to the economic
00:41:30[263] | |
slowdown following the outbreak
of Corona virus NASA said in
00:41:36[264] | |
a statement the drop in | |
nitrogen dioxide 1st | |
00:41:42[265] | |
appeared in areas around han the
city in central China where cases
00:41:49[266] | |
of the new corona virus were 1st
reported in December the pollution
00:41:56[267] | |
drops then spread across the
country NASA said satellite
00:42:03[268] | |
images that NASA published online show
pollution clouds had almost completely
00:42:10[269] | |
disappeared between January
1st and February 25th | |
00:42:17[270] | |
during this period the Chinese government
shut down transportation going into and
00:42:24[271] | |
out of move on and ordered local
businesses to stop operating this
00:42:31[272] | |
is the 1st time I have seen such
a dramatic drop off over such
00:42:36[273] | |
a wide area for | |
00:42:38[274] | |
a specific event NASA air quality

00:42:45[275] | |
a statement. You said he believes
the last major drop in pollution
00:42:52[276] | |
levels over several countries came
during the economic recession that began
00:42:58[277] | |
in 2008 but he said that | |
decrease happened slowly

00:43:19[282] | |
a recent report on the pollution changes
in China published in carbon brief he
00:43:26[283] | |
wrote that electricity demand and
industrial output remained far below their
00:43:33[284] | |
usual levels in several main areas. Noted
00:43:39[285] | |
a study showing that coal usage at

00:43:53[287] | |

China's virus fighting
00:44:00[288] | |

by at least 25 percent during this
00:44:07[289] | |
period the research showed but
Miller vetoed told the Associated

00:44:18[291] | |
a sharp rise once the current

00:44:24[292] | |
now is how China's government
will respond he said Miller veto
00:44:31[293] | |
a noted that after the 2008 to
2009 financial crisis China
00:44:37[294] | |
attempted to make up for lost economic
activity by launching massive aid
00:44:43[295] | |
programs that also supported
pollution causing industries.

however he added that his team

a special English I'm Steve Embry. But
House of Representatives ended the
00:46:37[313] | |
day's business early on the rainy
afternoon of April 12th 1905 but
00:46:44[314] | |
House Democratic leader
speaker's Sam Rayburn invited
00:46:48[315] | |
a friend to come by his office for
00:46:51[316] | |
a drink to be there around 5 Graber
and said Harry Truman is coming over.
00:46:59[317] | |
Harry Truman was the vice president
at the time the events described in
00:47:05[318] | |
a book about his presidency conflict
and crisis by Robert Donovan.
00:47:12[319] | |
World War 2 was not over yet but it was
00:47:16[320] | |
a quiet afternoon in Washington President
Franklin Roosevelt was in the southern
00:47:22[321] | |
state of Georgia he was resting after his
recent trip to Yalta to meet with British
00:47:29[322] | |
Prime Minister Winston Churchill and Soviet
leader Joseph Stalin the president's
00:47:35[323] | |
wife Eleanor was at the | |
White House working on | |
00:47:39[324] | |
a speech supporting the new United Nations
Amery Truman was at the Senate but
00:47:46[325] | |
he was not interested in the debate that
was taking place he spent most of his time
00:47:52[326] | |
writing to his family back in Missouri
when the debate finished he went to the
00:47:59[327] | |
office of House leader | |
Rayburn to join him for | |
00:48:02[328] | |
a drink. It was an afternoon Truman
would never forget. Rayburn and his
00:48:09[329] | |
friend were talking in the office before
Truman or right the telephone rang it
00:48:16[330] | |
was | |
00:48:16[331] | |
a call from the White House asking whether the
vice president had arrived yet no Reverend
00:48:23[332] | |
replied the caller asked him to have Truman
telephone the White House as soon as he
00:48:30[333] | |
arrived Truman entered
00:48:33[334] | |
a minute later he immediately called
the White House as he talked his face
00:48:40[335] | |
became white he put down the phone
and raced out the door to his car.
00:48:47[336] | |
Arrived at the White House within minutes
and the assistant took him up to the
00:48:52[337] | |
president private living area Eleanor
Roosevelt was waiting for him there Harry
00:48:59[338] | |
she said the president is dead
Truman was shocked he asked to Mrs
00:49:06[339] | |
Roosevelt if there was anything he could
do to help her but her reply made
00:49:13[340] | |
clear to him that his own life at
suddenly changed. Is there anything we
00:49:20[341] | |
can do for you Mrs Roosevelt asked the
new president you are the one in trouble
00:49:26[342] | |
now. Within hours the world learned
the news that Franklin Roosevelt
00:49:33[343] | |
the longest serving president in
American history was dead he died of
00:49:40[344] | |
a cerebral hemorrhage bleeding in the
brain. Americans were shocked and
00:49:46[345] | |
scared it was 1945 m.b. | |
00:49:50[346] | |
United States was still at war. Roosevelt
had led the nation since early
00:49:56[347] | |
1933 he was the only president
many young Americans had ever
00:50:03[348] | |
known who would lead them now all
eyes turn to have read Truman our
00:50:10[349] | |
departed and never thought that way
he looked all over and. That he would
00:50:17[350] | |
want it that is what America
will do. Everything Truman
00:50:24[351] | |
his 1st speech to Congress as
president well great. I call upon all
00:50:31[352] | |
of them. It would help me be united.
00:50:39[353] | |
But eloquent like well played.
00:50:49[354] | |
On it won't hurt you if you're
00:50:51[355] | |
a Bible under and all of the love of
liberty throughout the world that I
00:50:58[356] | |
look the part and that then you know
that. We're all liars right and all.
00:51:13[357] | |
Truman had been | |
00:51:14[358] | |
a surprise choice for vice president
that the Democratic. Party nominating
00:51:19[359] | |
convention in 1944 delegates
considered several other
00:51:25[360] | |
candidates before they chose him as
Roosevelt's running mate that was at
00:51:32[361] | |
a time when presidential candidates did
not make their own choices for vice
00:51:38[362] | |
president. Harry Truman lacked
the fame the rich family and the
00:51:44[363] | |
strong speech making skills
of Franklin Roosevelt he was
00:51:49[364] | |
a much simpler man he grew up in
the midwestern state of Missouri
00:51:56[365] | |
Truman only studied through high school but
took some night time law school classes
00:52:03[366] | |
he worked for many years as a farmer and
00:52:06[367] | |
a small business man but without
much success Truman had long been
00:52:12[368] | |
interested in Tala tics when he was
almost 40 he finally won several low
00:52:19[369] | |
level positions in his | |
home state by 1934 he was
00:52:26[370] | |
popular enough in Missouri to be nominated
and elected to the United States Senate
00:52:33[371] | |
and he won reelection 6 years
later. Most Americans however knew
00:52:40[372] | |
little about Harry Truman when he became
president they knew he had close ties to
00:52:46[373] | |
the Democratic Party political machine
in his home state but they had owned so
00:52:53[374] | |
heard that he was | |
00:52:54[375] | |
a very honest man they could see that
Truman had strongly supported President
00:53:01[376] | |
Roosevelt's New Deal bro gran's but
they could not be sure what kind of
00:53:08[377] | |
President Truman would become. History
gave Truman little time to learn about
00:53:15[378] | |
his new job the most important power
he now possessed was the power of
00:53:21[379] | |
a Tomic weapons and soon after he became
president he faced the decision of whether
00:53:27[380] | |
or not to use that power was the
1st time in history. Truman firmly
00:53:34[381] | |
believed that using the atomic bomb
was the only way to force Japan to
00:53:41[382] | |
surrender so in August of 1945
he gave the orders to drop the
00:53:48[383] | |
atomic bombs on the Japanese cities of
Hiroshima and Nagasaki having found their
00:53:55[384] | |
Tomic bomb we have used it we shall continue
to use it until we completely destroy
00:54:01[385] | |
Japan's power to make war. Only
00:54:04[386] | |
a Japanese surrender will stand by us it
is an awful responsibility which has come
00:54:10[387] | |
to us we thank God that it has
come to us instead of to our enemy
00:54:17[388] | |
and we pray that he may guide us to use
it in his ways and for his purposes
00:54:24[389] | |
days earlier Truman had met in Pottstown
Germany near Berlin with the British and
00:54:31[390] | |
Soviet leaders Winston Churchill and
Joseph Stalin to plan but peace the war
00:54:37[391] | |
in Europe and the ended several months
before Good evening from the White House in
00:54:42[392] | |
Washington ladies and gentleman the
president of the United States my fellow
00:54:48[393] | |
Americans. I have just | |
returned from Berlin | |
00:54:53[394] | |
a study for which the Germans
intended to rule the world it is
00:54:57[395] | |
a ghost city the buildings are in ruin its
economy and its people are in. Our party
00:55:04[396] | |
also visited what is left of Frankfurt and
Darmstadt. We flew over their own names
00:55:10[397] | |
a castle Magdeburg and other devastated
city their men women and children and old
00:55:16[398] | |
men are wondering over | |
the highway turning to | |
00:55:20[399] | |
a bombed out early evening that is
searching for food and shelter or has
00:55:27[400] | |
indeed come home to Germany and to the
German people it has come home and write
00:55:33[401] | |
with which | |
00:55:34[402] | |
a German leaders started right away did the
3 leaders agreed that their nations and
00:55:40[403] | |
France would jointly occupy Germany
they also agreed to end the
00:55:46[404] | |
Nazi Party in Germany to hold trials
for Nazi war criminals and to break up
00:55:53[405] | |
some German businesses foreign ministers
of the allied nations later negotiated
00:56:00[406] | |
peace treaties with Germany and other
countries including Italy and Kerry and
00:56:06[407] | |
Romania Eastern European nations agreed
to protect the political and economic
00:56:13[408] | |
freedom of their citizens however Western
political experts were increasingly
00:56:20[409] | |
worried that the Soviet Union would
block any effort for real democracy in
00:56:26[410] | |
Eastern Europe Truman did not trust
the Soviets and as he made plans for
00:56:33[411] | |
coast more Asia he promised himself that
he would not allow Moscow any part in
00:56:40[412] | |
controlling Japan. The leader of the
American occupation in Japan was Army
00:56:46[413] | |
General Douglas MacArthur.
Acted quickly to hold | |
00:56:51[414] | |
a series of trials for Japanese
war crimes he also launched
00:56:57[415] | |
a series of reforms to move
Japan toward becoming more like
00:57:02[416] | |
a western democracy women were given
the right to vote land was divided
00:57:09[417] | |
among farmers the idea of
00:57:12[418] | |
a national religion was ended and the
educational system was reorganized
00:57:20[419] | |
Japan began to recover becoming
stronger than ever as an economic power
00:57:27[420] | |
Truman and other world leaders were dealing
with the problems of making peace but
00:57:34[421] | |
at the same time they were
also trying to establish
00:57:38[422] | |
a new system for keeping the peace.
The United States the Soviet Union
00:57:45[423] | |
Britain and the other allies that formed
the United Nations during war time
00:57:52[424] | |
but soon after Truman took office they met
in San Francisco to discuss ways to make
00:57:59[425] | |
the United Nations | |
00:58:00[426] | |
a permanent organization
for peace. In July of 1944
00:58:07[427] | |
many of the world's top economic
experts met the world denies
00:58:12[428] | |
a new system for the world
economy. They gathered and
00:58:16[429] | |
a hotel in Bretton Woods in the American
state of New Hampshire they created the
00:58:23[430] | |
World Bank and the International Monetary
Fund to help nations rebuild their
00:58:29[431] | |
economies. At the center of all
the action was having Truman. It
00:58:36[432] | |
was not long before he showed Americans and
the world that he had the ability to be
00:58:43[433] | |
a good president he was honest strong
and willing to make decisions.
00:58:51[434] | |
I was sworn in one night and the next
morning I had to get right to have
00:58:56[435] | |
a job at hand the Truman remembered years
later in an oral history recorded with
00:59:03[436] | |
the writer Meryl Miller Truman said I
was afraid but of course I didn't let
00:59:09[437] | |
anybody know that and I knew that I would
not be called on to do anything that I
00:59:15[438] | |
was not able to do that's something
I learned from reading history
00:59:22[439] | |
Truman spoke of how people in the past
add much bigger problems somehow he said
00:59:29[440] | |
the best of them just went ahead and did
what they had to do and they usually did
00:59:35[441] | |
all right. I am saying. | |
