Do we not always stand in front of G*d? We can approach
Rosh HaShannah or Rosh HaShannah can approach us. We are
told that we stand in front of HaShem on Rosh HaShannah.
At every moment we always stand in front of HaShem, but
we are not aware of it normally, so we are given this
time to perceive the presence of G*d.
The Day of Judgment. The Day of Judgment is not complete
by itself, with the thoughts and feelings that are
evoked. Thoughts and feelings are meant to lead to
actions, and actions are the tools that are given to us
to help with BECOMING. A neshuma is not able to perform
actions; we are clothed in bodies so we can perform
actions in order to increase and fulfill our potential.
The exodus was a potential that was fulfilled. When a
potential is fulfilled, and new potential is created.
Why is Rosh HaShannah at the beginning of the year? On
Rosh HaShannah we do teshuva for our transgressions.
Should this not be done at the END of the year? Do we go
before the Judge before or after we commit the crime? The
answer is that we look back on the previous year not to
judge it but to make a commitment for the coming year.
It is hard to carry the awareness of G*d into the world
of action and the rest of the year.
Why does Moses say You saw what happened in Mitzrayim?
This is odd, since by now the generation that was at
least 20 years old at the CHATE of the spies had died
out. The answer is that he is particularly addressing the
old ladies. The women were not included in the decree. He
was also speaking to the people who 19 years old or
younger at the time of the exodus.
Why did HaShem separate us from the nations? Remembering
that HaShem brought us out of Mitzrayim is very
important. We say it in our daily prayers. He separated
us from people who were doing things not so very
different from what we were doing, and He did this not
because of what we did to merit it, but because of what
we were assigned to do in the future. He was giving us
the opportunity. This defines us and our mission in this
world. We are here for a purpose.
Why were we given mitzvote? We are here not because of
what we are going to DO, but because of what we are going
to BECOME. Actions are for the purpose of helping us
become, and halachah (law) is to train us in doing this.
Chazal say that if you have $1,000 to give to tzedukah
and a Jew comes to you needing $1,000, you give him $10,
because it is better to give tzedukah in small amounts
repeatedly than in one large sum. The repetition trains
us. | |
What does it mean that G*d did not give you eyes to see,
ears to hear and a heart to understand until this day?
Moshe was very pleased when the people complained to him
that he was transmitting Torah to the Kohanes and not to
them, and he responded with this statement. The Torah
must become ours, and when it does we now have eyes that
see, ears that hear and a heart that understands. When we
make Torah ours, we create the opportunity to become
close to G*d. We say to HaShem: please give me eyes to
see, ears to hear and a wise heart, so I can know You are
HaShem our G*d. | |
Why does Moshe say I led you forty years? Forty years is
a substantial amount of time. A person has to learn 40
years with his rebbe, he is not to study kabalah until he
is at least 40 years old.
The clothing did not wear out in the desert, and the
garments grew as the children grew. Garments could be
seen by everyone; when shoes wore out they were noticed
only by the wearer, since they were sandals, soles with
straps. | |
