Today on Insight we look at the election results from
Reno and San Joaquin County. Also, republicans take the
senate, Jerry Brown is elected to an unprecedented fourth
term and we breakdown the close race for Superintendent
of Public Instruction.
National News reporter Matt Laslo joins us from
Washington D.C. to talk about the changing makeup of
Congress.
Reno voters elected city councilwoman Hillary Schieve as
the city's new mayor. Capital Public Radio Sierra
Reporter Ky Plaskon explains what that means for the
city. Plus, voters in San Joaquin County approved two
measures that will pump money into schools in Stockton
and Manteca. Capital Public Radio Contributing Central
Valley Reporter Rich Ibarra explains.
Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson s drive to transform the
city s government into a strong mayor system has been
defeated. With 100 percent of precincts reported, the
final vote tally was 42.78 in favor of Measure L and
57.22 percent opposed. Sacramento City Manager John
Shirey, whose job was at stake in the deciding over
Measure L, joins us to talk about what comes next.
Incumbent Tom Torlakson will remain California s
superintendent of public instruction. He beat reform-
minded opponent Marshall Tuck 52 percent to 48 percent.
Joining us to explain where the state s education system
goes now is The California Report s Education Reporter

The team behind a new film about the life of legendary
soul singer James Brown includes Rolling Stones front man
Mick Jagger and a man who once spent time attracting
bands like the Police and Elvis Costello to a 300 seat
coffee house at UC Davis. Executive producer Peter
Afterman attended UC Davis in the late 1970 s and was
instrumental in making the Brown biopic Get On Up. He s
also working on an upcoming HBO documentary about Brown
called Mr. Dynamite. Afterman manages the James Brown
estate and the bulk of the Rolling Stones recordings,
which is how he knows fellow Get On Up and Mr. Dynamite
producer Jagger. Afterman joins us to talk about his
music career in the film industry and his two films about
The Hardest Working Man in Show Business. Get On Up is in
theaters now and Mr. Dynamite begins airing on HBO
October 27.
