The story of one young man convicted of serious crime and |
|
facing the death penalty is featured by the docent in |
|
this video clip. It occurred to the judge that a strong |
|
young man could still have a purposeful, productive life |
|
and so offered him a period (or lifetime?) of slavery in |
|
the underground galleries of coal mining. The neck collar |
|
marked his status and the display case lets modern |
|
visitors remember his plight. It is one lens on the |
|
Industrial Revolution of steam-powered empire and |
|
enterprise. |
