The story of one young man convicted of serious crime and
facing the death penalty is featured by the docent in
this video clip. It occurred to the judge that a strong
young man could still have a purposeful, productive life
and so offered him a period (or lifetime?) of slavery in
the underground galleries of coal mining. The neck collar
marked his status and the display case lets modern
visitors remember his plight. It is one lens on the
Industrial Revolution of steam-powered empire and
enterprise.
