The research and development activities of Research and
Instruction Units at four elementary schools in Madison,
Wisconsin, during the 1966-67 school year are summarized.
Individualization and motivation were the focal points of
these projects; special attention was given to language
arts. Neither of the language environment programs
yielded significant results, but pupils in the
experimental group showed progress as great as or greater
than that of control pupils. In a comparison of reading
approaches for first-grade children, the linguistic
approach was effective for girls; the basal reader
approach was more successful for boys. In a sixth-grade
unit, pupils using individualized reading materials
performed better than pupils using basal readers. With
the aid of reading consultants, the staff of one school
developed a scope and sequence of skills for an
individualized reading program. Primary pupils exposed to
this program made greater gains in reading vocabulary and
comprehension than would usually be expected. The reading
program is being implemented at all grade levels in four
schools for the 1967-68 school year. (Author/BS)
