Final Environmental Impact Statement for the Airspace
Training Initiative Shaw Air Force Base, South Carolina.
This document records the decision,en of the United
States Air Force (Air Force) with regard to the Airspace
Training Initiative (ATI). In making this decision, the
information, analyses, and public comments contained in
the Final Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for the
Airspace Training Initiative (ATI), Shaw Air Force Base
(APB), South Carolina were considered, along With other
relevant matters. The Air Force is the Lead Agency and
the Federal Aviation Administration is the Cooperating
Agency. The 20th Fighter Wing (20 FW) at Shaw AFB, SC,
manages training airspace to support existing F-16
aircraft training missions of the 55th, 77th; and 79th
Fighter Squadrons at Shaw AFB, and the 157th Fighter
Squadron assigned to the 169th Fighter Wing (169 FW) at
McEntire Joint National Guard Base (formerly McEntire Air
National Guard Station), SC. A Final EIS was prepared
(Federal Register, Vol. 75, No 122, Page 36386, June
25,2010) to evaluate the ATI proposal to modify existing
Special Use Airspace to provide effective and realistic
military training air space that is sized, configured,
and able to support the training needs for the F-16
pilots assigned to Shaw AFB and McEntire JNGB. The
proposed action will enhance training opportunities, thus
increasing combat capability and survivability of Shaw
AFB and McEntire JNGB F-16 pilots. These bases comprise
70 percent of the Air Force's Continental United States
(CONUS)-based Suppression of Enemy Air Defenses (SEAD)
and Destruction of Enemy Air Defenses (DEAD) assets. 20
FW and 169 FW pilots are routinely deployed worldwide in
support of overseas contingency operations where they are
exposed to enemy threats in combat. The constant
evolution of technology and sophistication of air
defenses available to potential enemies demand that
pilots be trained to instantly respond to these
increasing threats.
