The objective of the study is to analyze the recreational
and leisure occupation and interests of service members,
facilitated by a questionnaire (included as an appendix)
distributed to 2822 persons (ages 17-25) in 34 garrisons.
The study reveals a difference in such activities between
the time before and during military service: especially
emergent once service has begun are sports, observably
trendy also are more solitary activities such as reading.
A large number of the surveyed demand an increase in time
allocated to sports, and fitness centers are often
castigated for offering faulty equipment. There seem to
be no significant statistical differences arising from
provenance (i.e., the former East or West Germany),
military status or rank, or the section of the armed
forces to which they belong. Women service members tend
to be, however, more physically active than their male
counterparts.
