This paper presents a theoretical approach to the problem
of finding the stress-strain relations for composites
under combined compression and shear. To this end, the 1-
element model, presented in Part I of this paper, is
replaced by a 2-element model. Both elastic and inelastic
composites are explored employing graphical methods. A
numerical example is worked out to illustrate the effects
of combined loads on the stiffness and strength of a
composite. The present theory employs a nonlinear
algebraic equation. An alternative approach would be to
use a linear incremental theory, leading to a linear
differential equation. An analysis is offered to show
that the latter approach leads to substantially the same
results as the 1-element model. Keywords: Stress-strain
relations; Unidirectional composites; Mechanics of
failure; Combined compression and shear; Geometric
nonlinearity; Material nonlinearity; Carbon-carbon
composites; Initial misalignment; Kinking.
