From May 1981 to June 1983, the Federal Aviation
Administration (FAA) Technical Center conducted a
detailed study of bird ingestions into large high bypass
ratio turbine aircraft engines. The worldwide study
covered over 2.7 million operations by 1,513 aircraft
consisting of the DC8, DC10, B747, B757, B767, A300,
A310, and L1011. The objective of this study was to
determine the numbers, weights, and species of birds
being ingested into these engines and determine what
engine damage, if any, resulted. This report presents the
findings of this study. (Author)
