Passive solar energy is presented as an alternative to
conventional space heating for existing and future
government family housing units. The extent of the
current energy problem is presented together with the
implications of the findings of the Workshop on
Alternative Energy Strategies. These findings
significantly influence the impending energy problems
facing the Department of Defense. A technical analysis is
made of five passive solar space-heating design
alternatives in five climate zones within the continental
United States to determine the potential savings in
conventional heating fuel and dollars to the Department
of Defense. In addition, major advantages and
disadvantages of solar energy are presented.
Recommendations for the utilization of passive solar
energy in family housing units conclude the thesis.
