Using hot wire anemometry, a base line turbulence
intensity level was determined for the Rectilinear
Cascade at the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School
Turbopropulsion Laboratory. The turbulence with straight
inlet guide vanes was compared to the turbulence without
guide vanes. Results indicated a uniform though slightly
greater turbulence level when using guide vanes. The use
of liquid crystal thermography was investigated as a
technique for visualizing flow across cascade test
blades. Methods of applying crystals to and resistance
heating of the blade surface were investigated in bench
tests. Recommendations are made which should lead to the
successful application of the technique in the cascade
wind tunnel. (Author)
