In Homesickness, A quiet night in a local pub is
shattered by the arrival of a sword-wielding fugitive; a
funeral party teeters on the edge of this world and the
next, as ghosts simply won't lay in wake; a shooting sees
a veteran policewoman confront the banality of her own
existence; and an aspiring writer grapples with his
father's cancer diagnosis and in his despair wreaks havoc
on his mentor's life.
Colin Barrett is from County Mayo, Ireland. His debut
collection Young Skins won the Rooney Prize for Irish
Literature, the Frank O Connor International Short Story
Award, the Guardian First Book Award, and was a National
Book Foundation 5 Under 35 Honoree. From 2018-20 he was
the Rolex Arts Initiative Literary Protege, mentored by
Colm T n. His stories have appeared in the New Yorker,
the Stinging Fly, New Statesman, Harper s Magazine, and
on BBC Radio 4.
Colin Barrett will be in conversation with Molly
McCloskey, author most recently of the novel Straying.
Molly lived in Ireland for 25 years before settling in
D.C. in 2014. Her books have twice been shortlisted at
the annual Irish Books Awards, and she has won awards for
her short stories, including a 2021 Pushcart Prize for A
Little Like God, published in McSweeney s. Her work has
appeared in the Guardian (UK), the Irish Times, the Los
Angeles Review of Books, the Dublin Review, and elsewhere.
