Silver maple
Acer saccharinum
I came across a massive silver maple (Acer saccharinum) dropping
its seeds, so I tried a bunch of them (which were very easy to
shell, the outer casing came right off). They weren't bad at all,
some slightly sweet and others just slightly bitter, but all
acceptable in taste and perhaps would be even better if they were
roasted or boiled. They were rather large, also, being maybe 1
1/2 times as large as your typical supermarket pine nut, and very
abundant, so they'd be easy to gather and process in quantity.
