                              Pinto Beans

  4      cups          dried pinto beans
  1      gallon        water
  1      teaspoon      sugar
  1      teaspoon      garlic powder
  2      teaspoons     chili powder
    1/2  teaspoon      pepper
  1      cup           diced tomatoes -- 1/3-inch cubes
    1/2  cup           cilantro springs, no stems
  1      cup           white onions -- diced

Place all ingredients except tomatoes, cilantro and onion in heavy pot and
simmer for 1 1/2 to 2 hours.  Stir occasionally.  Check for tenderness of
beans.  Add tomatoes, cilantro and onion and simmer for 5 minutes.  Serves 24.
