MMMMM----- Recipe via Meal-Master (tm) v8.06

     Title: Irish Soda Bread

     Yield: 2 Loaves

     4 c  Flour
     1 ts Salt
     3 ts Baking powder
     1 ts Baking soda
   1/4 c  Sugar (optional)
   1/2 ts Ground cardomom (optional)
     4 tb Butter; chilled and cut into
          -pieces
     1    Egg
 1 3/4 c  Buttermilk

 In a large bowl combine flour, salt, soda, baking powder, sugar, and
 spices. Add butter and cut in with pastry blender or two forks until
 crumbly. Beat eggs slightly and mix with buttermilk. Add to dry
 mixture and blend [that translates to stir/mix] thoroughly. Turn out
 onto a floured board and knead until smooth 2 to 3 minutes. Divide
 dough in half and shape into round loaves to fit an 8" round pan. Cut
 crosses on the top about 1/2" deep. Bake at 375 F for 35 to 40
 minutes.
