     Title: Sugarplum Cookies

     Yield: 84 servings

   3/4 c  Granulated sugar
   1/2 c  Shortening
   1/2 c  Butter or margarine;
          -softened
     1    Egg
 2 1/2 c  All-purpose flour
   1/2 ts Baking powder
   1/8 ts Salt
     1 ts Vanilla extract
   3/4 c  Hazelnuts
          Glaze:
     2 c  Powdered sugar
     6 ts Water; approximately
          Food coloring; optional

    Preheat oven to 375 degrees.  Beat the sugar, shortening, margarine,
 egg, flour, baking powder, salt and vanilla extract in a large bowl on low
 speed until blended. Add 2 to 3 tablespoons milk if the dough is too dry.
 Shape 1 level teaspoonful of dough around each hazelnut to form a ball.
 Place 2 inches apart on ungreased cookie sheets. Bake for 10 to 12 minutes,
 or until set but not brown. Remove from the cookie sheets. Cool completely
 on wire racks. For the glaze, mix the ingredients until the glaze is a
 consistency that will adhere to the cookies without dripping. Roll in
 colored sugar if desired.  Makes 7 to 8 dozen.
