INTRODUCTION / WHY? [INT] 1.0
==============================================================================
You may be asking, why make such a guide? This game is all about skill and
practice to become better, you don't need to read a guide on all that. This is
where many go wrong about guides for Guitar Hero or Rock Band. This guide's
sole intention is not only to help you understand techniques you will use to
gain more skill, but it will also reveal all of the hidden things in the game
and list all the sets you will be playing in World Tour Mode, as well as show
the different challenges there are in the Tour Challenge Mode. A list of
achievements is also at the end of this guide for those looking in on the
secret achievements and those who would like to know what achievements are
available on the game.
So there you have it, a useful guide for a game almost solely based on skill.

VERSION HISTORY [VER] 1.1
==============================================================================
v0.8 :: First official posted version. Includes almost all in-depth info.
Missing the drum challenges and Gamerscore for the Bladder of
Steel Award.
==============================================================================
OVERVIEW BASICS [BAS] 2.0
==============================================================================
Rock Band is a game of timing and music adept. Other than the vocals, the
gameplay is relatively the same. You will see a trackboard (for guitar and
bass, it's called the fretboard) with four or five colors at the base
(drummers will see four, and a fifth as a bar surrounding the four colors).
When that colored note hits the bottom of the trackboard and lines up with
it's respective color, you must strum or hit that note on your instrument.
If blue comes down, hit blue, if red comes down, hit red, if yellow and green
come down, hit yellow and green, and so on. For vocalists, the trick is to
match your pitch with the pitch on screen. The words are not necessary,
unless it's a "talkie part", in which you must say the words, because the
game doesn't reconize you saying words when you run them all together. You
must articulate your words during the talking.
In all instruments, there is a unified "white" section (for vocals, it's
gold). These white sections will give you overdrive (the meter below the
different colors, and just above your multiplier score). If you can play the
whole section perfectly, you will earn yourself one fourth of that meter. To
release the overdrive, guitars and bassists will raise their instruments to
point up, drummers will play a fill section ending with the crash cymbal, and
vocalists will play during a gold "open" section. Drummers and strings can
earn double the amount if they all play during a single section together. A
small icon will appear in the center of the screen when these three
instruments have a unified section, if all three complete it, they will
automatically have enough to go into overdrive. If ust two complete it, they
will still have enough to start overdrive, but those who missed it won't get
any.
==============================================================================
VOCAL TIPS [VOC] 2.1
==============================================================================
EASY --> EXPERT
Vocalists and drummers have the hardest job within the band. They have to
keep their stamina up in order to perform. When preparing to play (yes, I said
preparing to play), make sure you do not drink any soda or drinks that can
cause you to become more thirsty. Water and milk usually do the best job of
keeping your air passage open and non-abrasive. Avoid clearing your throat, as
that will cause the vocal chords (the things that make pitches) to cross and
vibrate vigorously, drying them out.
Once you've prepared either try a simple "Do-Re-Mi" excercise to get you in
tune/pitched. At the start of every song, find a comfortable "middle ground",
a place where you can feel comfortable to sing at, and it usually should fall
directly in the middle of the trackline. It's best to know the songs prior
to playing them as well, so feel free to go the extra mile with your band
and download the songs to listen to in your free time. You may find you enjoy
more songs.
An optional part of playing as a vocalist is the percussive sections. You can
either tap the mic with your hand or by hitting the green "A" button. It's
easier to tap the "A" button because your hand won't go numb and turn red.
The downside to hitting the "A" button would be if you are a person who likes
to stand and sing their part, you will be carrying around an X-Box controller
as well. Figure out the best solution that works for you and take drinks often
or your throat will dry out.
==============================================================================
GUITAR TIPS [GUI] 2.2
==============================================================================
EASY
If you've never handled a guitar controller and this would be your first time
picking one up, get prepared to be either hooked, or working to the wee hours
of the morning attempting to learn this bad-ass piece of machinery. Most of
this guide will be covered assuming you have the Rock Band original guitar,
and not the Guitar Hero controllers.
There are four parts to the guitar: the play frets (the colored notes at the
top of the guitar), the solo frets (the colored notes at the base of the neck
of the guitar), the strum bar (the bar just below the solo frets), and the
whammy bar (the large metal bar sticking out of the base of the guitar). Each
of these four are required to play the full Rock Band.
The basics of playing the guitar is to hold the colored fret you need to play
(either the play or the solo frets), and strum when the note crosses the base.
If it is a long note (it will have a line dragged from the start), you must
hold that fret for the entire duration. During overdrive sections, if you have
a long note, you can wiggle the whammy bar in and out to gain more overdrive,
or sustain your current running overdrive (if wiggled fast enough). Finally,
the sections outlined in blue are the solo sections. You'll know it's a solo,
because a percentage will appear above your trackboard and count up for every
note you hit. You can use the solo frets to play this section, and if you do,
you don't need to strum! This can be counter-intuitive though as some of the
tougher songs require you to hit notes fast than your finger can press it
down.
MEDIUM
Once you get going with a guitar, you will soon find it boring to play on
easy. Don't fret! There are harder difficulties! Be prepared though, when you
walk to the next difficulty, it might hurt for a while.
The medium difficulty introduces the new button: the blue one. Nothing else
changes too much, except that your pinky now has some work to do. Keep at it
and get used to this new button.
HARD --> EXPERT
The hard difficulty will add a new button, and change how you play on the
guitar forever. Once you master this button and the follow tricks, you won't
want to leave hard or expert. With the orange button added on, a lot of the
tracks you play will sound a lot better and you will have to learn a bit of
hand positions. The basic hand positions are:
Green Root: G-R-Y-B-
Red Root: -R-Y-B-O
Skip-per: G- -Y-B-O
Skip-py: G-R- -B-O
Skip-Bo: G-R-Y- -O
Octave: G- - - -O
These hand positions are found throughout the entire game, and are where the
fingers will need to go if you want to hit the hammer on/pull off (HO/PO)
sections.
HO/POs are sections where you will strum the first note (the large one), and
"fret" the rest (the smaller notes). These sections are relatively fast and
seldom call for runs (running from one note to a note 3 or 4 away). Practice
"running" up and down your fretboard in all positions (in Octave, go from top
to bottom without skipping). Knowing how to get from one fret to the other
fast enough will get you going through the expert solos.
One last note: PRACTICE MODE WORKS.
==============================================================================
DRUM BASICS [DRM] 2.3
==============================================================================
EASY --> EXPERT
Drumming requires a lot of hand-eye coordination in order to achieve the
ability to play. A helpful way to start on drums is to take the drum tutorial
and learn to get a sense of rhythm. Once you've accomplished the tutorial,
switch to the Drum Trainer and pick up your first couple of rhythms. If you
have to, don't bump the tempo to anything higher than 120 BPM. This will get
you learning some of the simple rhythms like 4-2 Snare Hits and triplet hi-
hats. The most important thing is to lern rhythms, beats, and patterns.
Make sure you train your foot to work nearly independantly from your hands
can do off patterns between your hands and foot, but still keep it in time.
The first couple of patterns will not involve your foot, but as you progress,
you will add in the foot hits and learn to get different beat patterns from
it.
==============================================================================
BAND BASICS [BND] 2.4
==============================================================================
In order to maximize your score and create uneeded energy use, playing as a
band can become pretty difficult and require some sort of leadership in order
to progress during and between songs. Usually you want a singer or guitarist
as your unclaimed leader. Have them direct usages of the overdrive and making
sure no more than one person is saving any players who have failed out. If two
people end up going for one person, you create a waste of Overdrive for the
song because now someone is using their overdrive for no reason.
During band play, you wll notice that instead of doubling your own individual
multiplier as seen during solo play, you will multiply the whole bands score,
depending on how many people are in overdrive. You can earn up to a x8 score,
along with a nice achievement. Coordinating these kinds of things can be hard,
and it's best to work them in with the drummer and singer. It's not possible,
don't make it work, but use them when you need to (during sections with plenty
of notes). Remember, it becomes a "band" multiplier when others play with you.
==============================================================================
TRACK LIST OVERVIEW [TRC] 3.0
==============================================================================
The tracks available for Rock Band 2 are expandable, in the sense that the
list of songs available will continue to grow with each expansion game and
with each downloadable content that becomes available. Due to the high volume
of songs released each week, tis guide will only serve it's purpose to show
the original released songs for the game, which include the 55 songs available
from Rock Band 1, the 84 songs available on Rock Band 2 (called disc songs),
and the 20 songs that will be released as an expansion of Rock Band 2. After
the section about how the tracks work, you can find a list of all these songs
(with the inclusion of the 20 bonus songs when they are released) with it's
related difficulties. The songs will be listed alphabetically by disc.
==============================================================================
HOW TRACKS WORK [WRK] 3.1
==============================================================================
EXPORTING SONGS
In order to export songs from the original Rock Band 1 disc to the Rock Band 2
disc, you will need:
1) A connection to the internet.
2) An X-Box LIVE account.
3) The original Rock Band (with updates).
4) $5 worth of Microsoft Points.
First, start by putting in Rock Band 1 and letting it update. When it is fully
updated, you will be able to go to the Options Menu and choose "Export Songs".
Select that option, and it will remind you that you need over 1 GB of space
available. Continue on, and it will bring up the purchase screen, asking if
you would like to download the Transfer Key. Select yes, and allow it to
download this small file. Once completed, the export will begin. It should
only take about 5 to 10 minutes to fully complete. When it's finished, go
back to your dashboard, select System and then Memory. Under "Games", you
should find Rock Band. Select that and a list of each individual song will be
in that list. If you do not want certain songs (Highway Star, Green Grass &
High Tides, etc.), you may choose to delete them individually. If you choose
so, know that you must repurchase a license key in order to transfer them
again. So choose wisely if you really want it. When you load up Rock Band 2
the next time, you should find a seperate sorting to get all songs from Rock
Band 1, which will be denoted as a "Download Song".
==============
SCORING TRACKS
==============
Tracks have two scoring methods: percentage of notes hit, and sequence of
notes hit. For ever note you hit, you earn 25 points. After hitting 10 notes
in a row, you will double every note you hit. After 20, you will get triple
the score. After 30, it is quadruple. For bassists, 40 and 50 notes hit will
give you bass groove and a 5x/6x multiplier. During solo tour, going into
overdrive will double that number, and place it in the center sphere, while
in Band Mode, overdrive will place a 2x/4x/6x/8x marker next to the score, to
denote that every member is getting a score multiplier. Hitting more than one
note at a time will add the points toether (or multiply by 2), and if you hit
3 notes at the same time, you will get triple for that chord. Held notes are
worth 50 points per beat (a solid bar across the fretboard). This is also
multiplied depending on your multiplier.
=====
STARS
=====
You score is directly related to your number of stars. Hitting 15% of the
notes will score you one star. 35% will score you a second star. 50% of the
notes will get you your third star. 75% of the notes will get you your 4th
star, and hitting 100% will get you the 5th star.
==============
GOING FOR GOLD
==============
In order to hit 5 gold stars, you must be on expert. To figure out the score
for it, take the score you achieve in order to earn 5 stars, and multiply it
by 1.5. This means that it is still possible to earn 5 gold stars and miss 1
or 2 notes. 1.5x the score means that you must spend at least 50% of the song
in overdrive (take half of the full score and add it on = double half the
songs possible 100% score).
===============
THE CROWD METER
===============
Your value for a note streak has two values: a negative and a positive. The
positive value is continuously replaced if you best it, and the highest value
is displayed at the end of a song (XXX note streak). You negative value is
never displayed as a number, but as a picture. On the left hand side, the
crowd meter will display the bands current negative/positive value of note
streaks. Each members value is displayed, and averaged out to get a value
of the overall crowd meter. The values it takes from 100% (of the crowd meter)
to fail out of a song are:
45 Notes (Easy)
40 Notes (Medium)
40 Notes (Hard)
35 Notes (Expert)
For each note you miss, your icon will drop a respected value. Until your
negative streak value is equivalent to your max value. Once a member has
failed out of a song, the average value of all members breaks from where it is
and steadily drops until it hits 0%. If, at this time, members of the band
miss any notes, the value will significantly decline. Using overdrive will
pull this value back up for a short period, but only if you are able to raise
your icon up (ie, it won't work if you/the band is already at 100%).
If your icon has already dropped to the lowest number (34/35), it will take
the inverse of the list above (-1) to bring your icon back up. These numbers
are:
34 Notes (Easy)
39 Notes (Medium)
39 Notes (Hard)
44 Notes (Expert)
If you go into overdrive, depending on your multiplier is how much less notes
you must hit in order to go back to 100%. If you are at a full 8x multiplier,
you will have to hit only 25% of the notes listed above. The bassist will have
the same amount, but for the respective 4x, 8x, 10x, 12x.
============
BAND SCORING
============
Scores made in solo tour are calculated by your score alone. Scores made in
band world tour are calculated by adding the sum score of all members. For
example:
Bass: 25,000 on expert.
Guitar: 50,000 on expert.
Vocal: 10,000 on medium.
Drums: 25,000 on hard.
Band: 110,000 on medium.
The band score will be then placed at the lowest difficulty, with a sum total
of all members. Because overdrive effects all band members, each individual
score will be slghtly higher than your own personal best (because you have up
to 4 times as many chances to hit overdrive).
=============
SOLO SECTIONS
=============
Solos are seperate sections of songs in which all rules still apply, the only
change is that you will gain extra points (under the star rules, these points
ARE calculated in how much it is required to get 5 stars, which means, without
overdrive, you MUST hit 100% of the solo). These extra points are not really
extra to the song, but if you get lower than 100%, it will account for your
streak and score. Big Rock Endings are NOT accounted for star count, which
means, any points earned through this are considered as extra points.
=============
VOCAL SCORING
=============
For vocalists, measuring the amount of points and a streak are a lot different
then how the rest of the band functions (which is also why you, the singer,
does not participate in unison bonuses). A song is broken down into a number
of phrases. These phrases are broken down into individual words (and seldom
further, into individual syllables). For every length of a phrase you hit
perfectly, you earn a multiplier (until you reach 4x). Each phrase has 4 types
of ratings:
50% of the phrase = MESSY
75% of the phrase = GOOD
85% of the phrase = GREAT
95% of the phrase = EXCELLENT
Note, that you do NOT need to hit a phrase perfectly. You MUST match a pitch
in order to earn chunks of the meter. In order to earn a phrase, you must hit
an excellent, nothing below it counts.
=============
VOCAL FAILURE
=============
Depending on the difficulty of the song, just like everyone else, a certain
amount of poor scores will drop your icon. Sometimes, it may seem like it is
dropping faster than the rest of the band, this is due to the fact that you're
"misses" are longer than everyone else's. A "MESSY" will account for one whole
miss. Miss the following amounts in each difficulty and you will fail out:
5 MESSY (Easy)
4 MESSY (Medium)
4 MESSY (Hard)
3 MESSY (Expert)
A "GOOD" is still worth a miss, but it takes 3 times as many "GOOD"s to fail
out of a song, making it worth the following to fail out:
15 GOOD (Easy)
12 GOOD (Medium)
12 GOOD (Hard)
9 GOOD (Expert)
A "GREAT" is still a miss for phrases, but it will not ruin your crowd meter,
although it won't help it either. Hitting ONLY "GREAT"s will maintain you at
the starting position (75%). Finally, "EXCELLENT" is a hit, and will only
bring the meter up.
If you are in overdrive, raising your meter from near death is pretty simple
and straightforward. It takes only 1 EXCELLENT to bring it straight to 100%, 2
"GREAT"s to bring it to 100%, and 4 "GOOD"s to do the same. A "MESSY" will not
bring your score down unless you make 2 in a row, making it still possible to
fail out as a singer.
====================
VOCALIZED PERCUSSION
====================
The final bit of vocalists is the percussive sections. Percussive sections are
technically considered "bonus" sections, but they do almost absolutely nothing
to a score, especially on Band Mode. If your singer is complaining about
bruising or aching hands, please tell them to stop as doing these sections are
100% optional. These sections are rated just as a solo, and every hit is worth
25 points. Period. There are NO multipliers, so don't bother using your
overdrive during these sections. Plus, your crowd meter won't change! If you
miss a note, they don't CARE! At the end, if 0% of the notes are hit, the game
assumes you are on idle, and will call the solo "IDLE". Yes, singers need a
break from now and then.

WORLD TOUR OVERVIEW [WTO] 4.0
==============================================================================
Now for the meat and potatoes of this FAQ. Here is the bulk of the FAQ, and
most likely why you came. The list of venues and challenges. If you ever
played Rock Band 1, you will have most likely figured out the mechanics behind
World Tour Mode and Solo Tour Mode. Since Solo Tour Mode has been excised
completely, World Tour Mode has taken on a different sort of progression. Each
venue still comes stocked with it's setlists and such, but nearing the end,
venues will become harder to open, and there will be wider selections during
each tier.
==============================================================================
WORLD TOUR SETLISTS [STL] 4.1
==============================================================================
The way I have written this section of the guide is in two ways, as there are
somewhat of two different sets in this Mode. The first are what I call
"Required Setlists". These are the setlists that are placed because they meet
the tiers criteria of being IN that tier. The second are what I call "Rotating
Setlists". These are setlists that move only based on where your "Hometown" is
located for your band. You will NOT find these setlists in the same tier for
every band. Thus, these setlists are listed in the next section, and listed
under the home city they can be found in (as the fall under a specified city.)
If you have noticed a discreption between the following setlists and tier that
they are located (as in, you find a MARATHON [GENRE] in a specific tier, and
not according to it's locale), please contact me and let me know. Credit will
be given!
As a final note, if you are connected to XBox LIVE and have recently accessed
the Battle of the Bands Mode at any time during a single session, some venues
and cities will appear with a trophy icon. These represent the locations that
a "Battle of the Band" can be accessed. You may choose to play them from World
Tour Mode if you like, but you cannot choose to play any of the Tour
Challenges. These must be accessed from that menu option.
With that being said, on with the sets.

TOUR CHALLENGE OVERVIEW [CHL] 5.0
==============================================================================
This is a new mode that Harmonix added. It was almost as a make up for not
having a solo career, and to add a bit more playtime. This mode is almost like
playing World Tour, except there are no locations, and you play only certain
setlists, and some of them require you to have a certain number of members in
it, or a certain instrument.
You first start with the original setlists: BAND, GUITAR, DRUMS, and VOCALS
(sorry bassists, everything was too easy to include a Tier 0 Challenge).
Everytime you complete a setlist, more open up, and eventually you unlock the
next tier.
The cool thing about this mode, is more setlists can be added and changed
depending on what songs are available to you. If you imported the Rock Band 1
songs in, you will see Rock Band setlists. Having more than 3 songs of a
single artist will produce a setlist as well.
In this section of the guide, I will break down the tiers by challenge. Since
many challenges will be available depending on what is available, I will only
include these types of challenges:
CORE Challenges (Challenges that are readily set)
RB1 Challenges (Challenges that are produced through RB1 Import)
INFINITE Challenges (Challenges that include all of a specific song)
I will NOT include the following Challenges (due to DLC):
ARTIST Challenges (Produced if you have 4+ songs by one artist)
ALBUM Challenges (Produced if you have 4+ songs on one album)

TOUR CHALLENGES BEGIN AT TIER 0, NOT TIER 1. THIS IS DUE TO THE BASS LEVEL OF
DIFFICULTY BEING NEARLY 1 STEP BELOW THAT OF THE GUITAR. ANY CHALLENGE WITH
INFINITE PRIOR TO THE NAME IS THE COLLECTION OF ALL THE SONGS AVAILABLE ON
THE HDD. THIS WILL UPDATE AS YOU ADD SONGS

BATTLE OF THE BANDS OVERVIEW [BOB] 6.0
==============================================================================
Battle of the bands is a new mode offered in Rock Band 2. In this mode, you
can play solo or with up to 4 people as a band. The point of the mode is to
get as many bands to play a set of songs and show who does the best. It's like
a seperate leaderboard that involves specific sets of songs. There are sets of
rules involved in each set, depending on the songs, as well as special
allowances to alter the way a set runs, and each set is also comparing certain
points made. Here is a short list of examples from each:
LIMITATIONS:
Must have 2 players.
Must have a drummer.
Must be solo.
ALLOWANCES:
'No Fail'
'No Challenge'
WINNING:
Highest Streak
Highest Stars
===================
SETTING UP A BATTLE
===================
When playing a set, prior to starting it, a special box will appear with four
tabs to let you know about the battle. The first tab is a quick overview of
the set itself, which lists the name of the Battle, a description of it, as
well as the Limitations, Allowances, and how to win. If a limitation is listed
in red, it means you do not meet the listed limitation. All Battles can be
played if you have all four players on.
The second tab is for a list of songs in the Battle. Most Battles can be
expected of three songs, but some can get to six. One requirement for the set
is that all players must have all the songs in the set. Some sets include DLC
while some include RB1 tracks. If even one player does not have a song listed
in the set, the set is unavailable to the band.
The third and fourth tabs are roughly the same thing. The third tab lists any
of your friends (XBL) bands, and the score they have made if they have tried
the set. The fourth tab will list ALL scores that have been posted for this
set by rank. If you hit the A button (the green fret/drum), you will be able
to scroll down the list of people/songs.
================
PLAYING A BATTLE
================
When you start the set, you will notice several changes. While the battle is
loading, it will show your opponent, which will change based on how many times
you have entered into the Battle. The first time you enter, your opponent will
usually be a Harmonix created band "Can't Beat this Score", and maintains one
of the lowest scores for the set. The second time you perform the set, your
opponent will be the band directly in front of your highest score. If you have
any friends who have posted a score on the Battle, your opponent will be the
next score up on your friends list.
During the battle, you'll notice two different counters: the first being at
the top. If you are a Tug of War enthusiast, you'll recognize this and know
what it means. For each song (that's rated by number of stars), your opponent
will appear on the left, and you on the right. When you are winning, the
slider will be at you and your icon will be glowing. The second counter is to
the right at the top and replaces your score. It is a star counter, for each
song you can attain a total of 7 stars (it's impossible, but that is the
highest count, which is a perfect score with a double score multiplier). The
most a typical band can reach is really 6.25 stars (thats a gold star with a
little bit more). This counter counts the total stars you have earned in the
set so far (meaning, at the second song you will start with how much you made
in the first). The bottom part is the other bands high score at the end of the
song. During streak battles, your highest streak will display, and you will
not see the tug of war slider at the top.
