1. Introduction
=============================================================================

Just running around a bit in the mercenaries mode is great, but after a
while you want to make some good high scores. It's obvious that killing lots
of enemies, making high combo's and making full use of your bonus time does
this, but you still don't know to what extent it all contributes.

I did some testing, and finally I was able to calculate all the scores I
was about to get before they showed up. Knowing how to calculate the score
gives some surprising conclusions that will be a big help for getting
higher scores than before.

To start of, there are two different kind of scores:

- The basic score; gets added right after you kill an enemy.

- The combo score; which is attained by making successive kills. It's
added to your total score if the combo comes to an end.

You can divide the enemies you encounter into two different types:

- Normal enemies (NE): Los Ganados / Los Illuminados / Ganado Army
       These are the villagers / monks / and soldiers found in all levels.

- Special enemies (SE): Bella Sisters / Garradors / JJs / Dr. Salvadors
       Bella Sisters: The women with chainsaws, you'll find in level 1.
       Garrador: The blind guy with huge claws, found in level 2 (castle).
       JJ: The big fellow with the gatling gun, present in level 3.
       Dr. Salvador: The masked guy with a dual chainsaw, in level 4.

=============================================================================
2. Basic Score
=============================================================================

The Basic score is directly added after killing an enemy.

Basic Scores: (TABLE 1)
+------------+-----+
|Enemy       |Score|
+============+=====+
|Normal enemy|  300|
|Bella Sister| 5000|
|Garrados    | 7000|
|JJ          |10000|
|Dr. Salvador| 5000|
+------------+-----+

---------
Examples:
---------

If you kill 13 normal enemies, your score will be 13*300 = 3900

**********

If you kill 5 Bella Sisters and 20 normal enemies,
your score will be 5*5000 + 20*300 = 31000

=============================================================================
3. Combo Score (normal enemies only)
=============================================================================

If you make successive kills you'll get a combo, which earns you more points.
After killing an enemy, you'll get 11 seconds to kill another. If you kill
another enemy within this time you'll get a combo, which will be displayed
in the upper right. Each time you kill another enemy within 11 seconds,
your combo will go one up. If you are not able to kill another enemy
before the time runs out, your combo will be lost. You'll get points for the
combo you just made, and have to start over, making a new combo.

Combo scores (for combo's made up of normal enemies only): (TABLE 2)
+------------------------------+------------------------+-----------------+
|Number of successive kills (N)|Combo score for Nth kill|Total combo score|
+==============================+========================+=================+
|                             1|                       0|                0|
|                             2|                      20|               20|
|                             3|                      50|               70|
|                             4|                     100|              170|
|                             5|                     200|              370|
|                             6|                     250|              620|
|                             7|                     300|              920|
|                             8|                     350|             1270|
|                             9|                     400|             1670|
|                            10|                     700|             2370|
|                            11|                     700|             3070|
|                            12|                     700|             3770|
+------------------------------+------------------------+-----------------+
*NOTE: This table only applies if the combo exists of only normal enemies.

"Combo score for Nth kill": Gives the score added to your combo for killing
                           the Nth enemy in your combo.

"Total combo score"       : Gives the total score you'll get, if you lose
                           your combo, having the length N.

You should note, that all kills, after the 9th, add 700 to your score,
no matter how big you combo becomes.

---------
Examples:
---------

If you make one big combo, containing 100 kills, your total score will be:

Combo score:
- 1670 for the first 9 kills (see the TABLE 2)
- 91*700 = 63700 for the last 91 kills
So your combo score will equal 1670+63700 = 65370

Basic score:
- 100*300 = 30000 (300 for each kill)

Your total score equals the basic score + combo score: 30000+65300 = 95300

**********

If you make two combo's, both having 50 kills, your total score will be:

Combo score:
- 1670 for the first 9 kills (see the TABLE 2)
- 41*700 = 28700 for the last 41 kills
So your combo score will equal 1670+28700 = 30370

Basic score:
- 50*300 = 15000 (300 for each kill)

Since you made two 50-combo's, your total score equals:
2*(basic score + combo score): 2*(15000+30370) = 90740

*NOTE: As you can see in these examples, two 50-combo's are not that bad.
Although one 100-combo is a lot harder, it doesn't earn as much more points
as you would expect. You should try to make your combo's bigger than 10
thought; ten combo's with the length of ten (also 100 kills)
will only give you 53700 total score.

=============================================================================
4. Combo Score (containing special enemies)
=============================================================================

Although the basic score is not the same for the different special enemies,
the combo score is. Calculating the combo score for combos containing special
enemies, is a little different.

Combo scores for a 12-combo, containing one special enemy (SE): (TABLE 3)
+----------------------------+------------------+-----------------+
|Place of SE in the combo (X)|Combo score for SE|Total combo score|
+============================+==================+=================+
|                           1|                 0|             3770|
|                           2|               500|             4250|
|                           3|              1000|             4720|
|                           4|              1500|             5170|
|                           5|              2000|             5570|
|                           6|              2500|             6020|
|                           7|              3000|             6370|
|                           8|              3500|             6920|
|                           9|              4000|             7370|
|                          10|              4500|             7570|
|                          11|              4500|             7570|
|                          12|              4500|             7570|
+----------------------------+------------------+-----------------+
*NOTE: A 12-combo is a combo containing 12 kills.

"Place of SE in the combo": The place of the special enemy in the 12-combo;
                           1 means: you kill a SE, then 11 NE's
                           5 means: you kill 4 NE's, a SE and then 7 NE's

"Combo score for SE"      : Gives the score added to your combo for
                           killing the SE.

"Total combo score"       : Gives the total score you'll get, if you lose
                           your 12-combo, having the SE in place X.

/If it's still unclear:                                                   \
|X = 1, means your combo consists of: SE,NE,NE,NE,NE,NE,NE,NE,NE,NE,NE,NE.|
\X = 7, means your combo consists of: NE,NE,NE,NE,NE,NE,SE,NE,NE,NE,NE,NE./

As you can see in the table; the combo score for the special enemy goes up
if it's later on in the combo. If the special enemy is the first enemy in
your combo, you get no combo score for it. If it's the 7th enemy in your
combo, you get 3000 for it. Just like the normal enemy combo score (for one
enemy), there is a maximum to it; if the special enemy is the 10th or later
in your combo, it will always give an extra combo score of 4500.

Also visible; if the SE is placed second in your combo, the combo score
isn't simply 3770+500 = 4270. The score will be 4250 instead. This is due
to the fact that you won't get the combo score the normal enemy would give
you, if he was in that place in your combo. If you look at the table
before this one, you will see that the combo score for a normal enemy on
the second place gives a score of 20 (see TABLE 2). So the Total combo score
for a 12-combo if the SE is placed on the second place is: 3770+500-20 = 4250

The same goes if the SE is on the 12th place: 3770+4500-700 = 7570
The SE combo score just replaces the NE combo score, for the Xth number.

---------
Examples:
---------

If you make a 127-combo in the castle level, having SE's as number
7, 39 and 82 your total score will be:

Combo score:
- 1670-300 = 1370 for the first 8 NE kills (see the TABLE 2, 300 is
substracted, since there is a SE on the seventh place)
- 116*700 = 81200 for the last 116 NE kills (127-3SE's-8NE's = 116 NE's left)
- 3000+4500+4500 = 12000 (3000 for the 1st SE, 4500 for the second and third)
So your combo score will equal 1370+81200+12000 = 94570

Basic score:
- 124*300 = 37200 (300 for each kill, 127-3SE's = 124 NE's)
- 3*7000 = 21000 (each SE from the castle level gives you 7000, see TABLE 1)
So your basic score will equal 37200+21000 = 58200

Your total score equals the basic score + combo score: 94570+58200 = 152770

**********

If you make a 68-combo in the first level, having SE's as number
3, 5, 39, 41, 58 and 59 your total score will be:

Combo score:
- 1670-50-200 = 1420 for the first 7 NE kills (see the TABLE 2)
- 55*700 = 38500 for the last 55 NE kills (68-6SE's-7NE's = 55 NE's left)
- 1000+2000+(4*4500) = 21000 (1000 for the 1st SE, 2000 for the second
and 4500 for the four last SE's)
So your combo score will equal 1420+38500+21000 = 60920

Basic score:
- 62*300 = 18600 (300 for each kill, 68-6SE's = 62 NE's)
- 6*5000 = 30000 (each SE from the first level gives you 5000, see TABLE 1)
So your basic score will equal 18600+30000 = 48600

Your total score equals the basic score + combo score: 60920+48600 = 109520

*NOTE: This makes it obvious that you should try to kill SE's if you already
have a combo at least 9, so you get 4500 combo score from them.

=============================================================================
5. Bonus time Score
=============================================================================

As you should know; each level contains (if I'm not mistaken) 3 places where
you are able to pick up a bonus time. It gives you 30 seconds of time,
in which all combo scores for enemies will be 1000. This is probably
something different than you thought it would be.

It means that if you make your first kill, without having a combo already
gives you 1000-0 = 1000 points more than you would normally get from killing
the NE. Since you wouldn't get a combo score for the first enemy anyway.

If you make your second kill, it gives you 1000-20 = 980 more points than
you would normally get killing the NE (of course, you will still get 1000
combo score, but you would have gotten 20 is there wasn't any bonus time).

This means that, if your combo is 9 or higher, you only get 1000-700 = 300
more than you normally would without having bonus time!

You might be wondering what happens if you kill special enemies during the
bonus time. Most of the time nothing happens. You don't get any extra for
it, but you won't lose anything from it either:

- If the SE is the first or second in your combo, you will get 1000
combo score (it will be rounded up, just like with NE's).

- If the SE is the third or more in your combo, you will get the original
combo score you would have gotten without any bonus time, since it is
1000 or higher anyway.

The basic score stays the same during bonus time.

---------
Examples:
---------

You make three 30-combo's, all three have the same content:
SE's on places 22,26 and 27. The only difference is the bonus time,
The first bonus time covers the first 10 kills of the first combo,
the second bonus time covers the kills 11 to 20 of the second combo,
the third bonus time covers the last 10 kills of the third combo.
If this was played on the fourth level, your total score would be:

First combo score:
- 10*1000 = 10000 for the first 10 kills (due to bonus time)
- 17*700 = 11900 for the last 17 NE kills (30-3SE's-10NE's = 17 NE's left)
- 3*4500 = 13500 (the 3 SE's are all later than the ninth place)
So your combo score will equal 10000+11900+13500 = 35400

Second combo score:
- 1670 for the first 9 kills (see the TABLE 2)
- 10*1000 = 10000 (due to bonus time)
- 8*700 = 5600 for the 8 NE kills (30-3SE's-19NE's = 8 NE's left)
- 3*4500 = 13500 (the 3 SE's are all later than the ninth place)
So your combo score will equal 1670+10000+5600+13500 = 30770

Third combo score:
- 1670 for the first 9 kills (see the TABLE 2)
- 7*1000 = 7000 (due to bonus time, 3SE's don't count since their
individual score will be 4500, instead of 1000)
- 11*700 = 7700 for the 11 NE kills (30-3SE's-16NE's = 11 NE's left)
- 3*4500 = 13500 (the 3 SE's are all later than the ninth place)
So your combo score will equal 1670+7000+7700+13500 = 29870

Basic score:
- 3*27*300 = 24300 (300 for each kill, 3 combo's, each 27 NE's)
- 9*5000 = 45000 (each SE from the fourth level gives you 5000, see TABLE 1)
So your basic score will equal 24300+45000 = 69300

Your total score equals the basic score + first combo score +
second combo score + third combo score: 69300+35400+30770+29870 = 165340

*NOTE: You should try to avoid including SE's in a bonus time. It only
makes you lose time, and doesn't give any extra. Bonus time is great to
start a new combo with.

=============================================================================
6. Conclusion / Tips
=============================================================================

Some very usefull things can be concluded from this all:

- It's good to encounter lots of special enemies. The basic score of one JJ
equals the same basic score of 33 normal enemies! One Bella Sister gives
about the same basic score as 17 normal enemies.

- You should try to get combo's higher than nine. After the ninth combo, the
average combo score goes from 186 (average combo score of the first nine
kills) to 700 (average combo score of kills made after the ninth)! This
means that the average efficiency after the ninth combo is nearly 3,8 times
larger than before the ninth combo.

- Also note that after the ninth combo the combo score / kill stays
constant. It doesn't grow after the ninth. This means that you get exactly
the same score from a 190-combo + a 10-combo as from a 100-combo +
a 100-combo, even though a 190-combo may seem way harder!

- Killing special enemies after the ninth kill in a combo gives you 4500
right there! This is combo score, so you won't see it when you kill them
(you will only see the basic score), but you sure notice it once you know
about it, and try to use it to your advantage. You shouldn't start combo's
with special enemies.

- Bonus time makes all the combo scores 1000 from the kills you make during
that time. If you already have a combo of nine of higher, it means you only
get 300 extra / kill (you would have gotten 700 without the bonus time
1000-700 = 300 extra). This might be a lot less than you origionally thought!
It's far more efficient to use bonus time when you want to start your combo.
The combo score of the first kills is very low, and raising it to 1000 will
be far more efficient.

- Combining the third and fifth hints: if you break up your combo, take a
bonus time, and start over a new one, you will lose NO SCORE AT ALL! You can
easily let your 100 combo end, to gather a few more normal enemies, to make
a new combo, using bonus time!

- You should avoid killing special enemies during your bonus time at all
cost. It will only take away some of your bonus time, and it doesn't add
more to your score than without bonus time. It only gives you a higher score
than it normally would if the special enemy would be the first or second
in your combo, but as seen in hint four, you don't want that.
