Introduction
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
This guide is designed to be a concise-but-thorough guide to MySims. The
game is not terribly complicated, but there is a lot of lists to manage
- sims, blueprints, and essences. I have attempted to provide a coherent
and straightforward guide to these subjects. As usual, it is a work in
progress. If you have any additional questsions, feel free to contact me
at wild(dot)halcyon(at)gmail(dot)com (sorry, spambots...). Simply place
"mysims" (no space!) in the subject of your email so it doesn't get
spam-filtered.
*Small caveat* Please don't ask questions that I've answered already in
the guide. If you do, I will simply ignore your message, or block your
email address.
What won't be covered in this guide:
Unfortunately, I can't really provide a list of house-building
unlockables. The game doesn't name them, so knowing what they are won't
help that much. On the bright side, they are ALL unlocked by moving in
Commercial Sims.
The same is true of outfits. You earn some outfits by building the
changing booth and costume chest. The rest are unlocked by becoming
best friends with Commercial Sims and UBER Townies. If you're missing
something, just befriend these characters.
To be completed:
- Tutorial
- Blueprint List
- Organize rewards from Commercial Sims
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
Star Levels
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
When you begin the game, you won't have access to the entire town.
Progressively as you complete tasks and befriend your neighbors, you will
earn points towards your star level. There are 6 star levels - ranging
from 0 to 5. Each star level provides you with a tool to explore new parts
of the town map, and also recruit new sims in the hotel. After earning a
star level make sure to check in the hotel to see any new faces to move
into your town.
****************
Star Level 1
****************
Star Level 1 unveils the crowbar. You can now access boarded doorways.
Actually, there's only one - west of the town center. It unlocks a geeky
cave which you can prospect essences within.
****************
Star Level 2
****************
Star Level 2 rewards you with the saw. You can now saw down fallen tree
trunks. There are actually a couple trunks, one at the entrance to the
forest (underneath the red pergola) and one further in on the east side
of the forest.
****************
Star Level 3
****************
Star Level 3 gives you the pickax. Break boulders with it wherever you see
them. There's one in the town center blocking the entrance to the desert.
There are three in the forest also - one east of the forest circle walkway,
one souh of the fishing pond, and one at the southeast corner (you'll need
to walk around the pond to reach it). Don't forget to use your saw and
crowbar along the opened path south of the fishing pond for two additional
areas!
Lastly, there is a boulder in the northern corner of the desert, another
one in the southwest, one fallen tree in the northwest, and two boarded-up
caves - one between two statues near the center and one past the cemetary.
****************
Star Level 4
****************
Star Level 4 puts the almighty blowtorch in your possession. There's not a
lot to do with it however. There's a rusty gate in the center of the pond
in the forest, and one in the northeast corner of the forest.
In the desert, there are two more useful gates. One in the southeast opens
up some new lots and two fishing opportunities while the one to the far
west opens up the junkyard (and a boarded-up cave behind it!).
****************
Star Level 5
****************
Star Level 5 gives you... nothing. Sorry, no tools here. You can now
recruit some of the best Sims in the game however - the UBER sims. Get
out there and star moving your Sims in!
The Essence walkthrough is simply a brief guide to unlocking all areas of
the game and collecting all 84 of the essences to use in your workshop
projects. This is also a walkthrough for quickly unlocking all the areas
of the game.
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
Star Level 0
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
There are many essences that are available at the beginning of the game.
I'll introduce them here.
You earn social essences by interacting with the other sims. Being nice
to Sims usually results in Happy essences, although some sims give Angry,
Scary, or Sad essences instead. Likewise, being mean to a sim will usually
provide Angry essences, although sometimes you can receive Scary or Sad
essences from this action as well.
Interactive essences are obtained by participating in activities with
other sims. They can all be obtained elsewhere in the game, but I'll post
them here as well, in case you want to grab them early.
Cute sims occassionally hold tea parties. You can get Tina dolls from
them if you participate.
Tasty sims will sometimes have a picnic. They will reward you with some
bacon if you eat with them.
Studious sims will have book club meetings. You can earn pencils this
way.
Geeky sims occassionally launch rockets. The rockets will sometimes drop
Rocket essences.
Scary sims hold seances. This will summon the ghost Cassandra. Being
nice to her sometimes results in Ghost essences. She can show up around
town without the seance too! Be nice to her enough (it takes several
dozen tries) and she will reward you with three unique blueprints.
Flowers will randomly grow around the village. If you choose to destroy
the flower you can receive a thorn essence. Picking the flower will
provide you with an organic essence.
There are several essences that are earned from trees, depending on
their type. Cutting down a tree that has fun or tasty essences gives you
light wood. Cutting down a tree with cute or studious essences give you
dark wood. Spooky trees and dead trees both give dead wood if you cut them
down. You'll notice I haven't mentioned geeky essence trees. You won't
find any for a long time, so I'll cover them when I reach the appropriate
star level.
- Thorn
- Organic
- Light Wood
- Dark Wood
- Dead Wood
Around town, you'll find plenty of essences before you even start working
on tasks for sims. Mayor Rosalyn shows you the orchard where you can find
green apple, red apple and yellow blossom essences. There's also a thorn
tree in a small orchard behind your house.
- Red Apple
- Green Apple
- Yellow Blossom
- Thorn (duplicate)
In the area between the orchard and the train tracks you'll find a
prospecting crystal. Prospect in this area to uncover some new essences:
- Stone
- 8-Ball
- Purple Crayon
Near the orchard and your house is a pond. Stand at the pier to fish. You
can find three essences here:
- Clown Fish
- Rainbow Trout
- Tire
These are all the level 0 basic essences.
The game starts off with a single task from the mayor. Build her podium,
then visit Poppy and build her flower stand and bed. This should put you
quickly into star level 1.
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
Star Level 1
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
There isn't a lot of new essences to find in Star Level 2. You earn the
crowbar, but the only place to use it is the small cave entrance in the
southwest area of town. Prospect in this "geeky" cave and find some new
essences:
- Action Figure
- Video Game
Move in Chef Gino. He'll have some tasks for you such as the pizza oven
and outfitting his kitchen. Complete all his tasks. You'll know when
you've completed all the tasks because the sim will reward you with their
"Decorative" item. Only commercial sims give you tasks and decoratives.
Make sure you finish Poppy's and Chef Gino's tasks.
Move in either DJ Candy or Vincent the museum curator. Completing either
of their tasks should put you over the requirements for Star Level 2.
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
Star Level 2
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
Now we're cooking with fire! Actually, we're sawing trees. A tree blocks
the entrance to the forest on the west side of town. Cut it down and
proceed into the forest. There are several new essences to be found here!
The small plateau to the north of the big tree near the entrance holds a
Cherry Blossom tree. Keep heading east, and a second plateau to the north
holds a Plum Blossom tree and a Rose tree. You might wish to consider
replanting these in town for quicker access.
- Cherry Blossom
- Plum Blossom
- Rose
Further into the forest you'll find a second pier leading into the water.
Fish here to uncover three new fishing essences:
- Crab
- Octopus
- Snake
If you head to the north side of the pond, you can cross over the fallen
tree. Immediately on the other side of the pond is a prospecting area.
Several tasty essences can be uncovered:
- Bacon
- Cake
- Chocolate Cake
- Gingerbread Man
Follow the eastern shore of the pond around to the south, cross the second
fallen branch and find yet ANOTHER prospecting area. Only two essences
here, one of which you've already found:
- Organic (duplicate)
- Terra Cotta
***Small Tip***
Although an orange tree is cut-off from access by some rocks, you can
still shake it and grab the orange essences after they fall if you wish
to get some of these a little early...
Now, there are several sims you can move into town at Star Level 2. Finish
your star level 1 sims tasks first. After that, move in a couple Star
Level 2 commercial sims. Nicole Vogue is a good choice at this point,
since one of her tasks gives you a blueprint for the Changing Booth,
unlocking some new clothing options. Also, Elmira the librarian has some
very easy tasks to complete - most of her essences can be harvested from
trees or being social with other sims.
Just a couple should put you over the threshold for Star Level 3!
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
Star Level 3
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
"You have a pickax? I wish I had a pickax..."
Ready for a bumpy ride? This is a LOT of essences unlocked. Lets begin
in the forest!
Slightly southwest of the tree in the pond is a set of boulders. Use the
pickax here to reach a set of plateaus with connecting bridges. Go all the
way across to reach a small stream. Break the boards blocking a cave mouth
here to find some spooky trees in the cave:
-Black Apple
-Eyeball
-Jack O'Lantern
Head back to the central pond. On the opposite edge, on the south side
(near the prospecting area with Terra Cotta and Organic) you'll find a
cave with boulders blocking it. This leads to a large prospecting area
with the following essences:
-Magic Carpet
-Music Note
-Soccer Ball
Near the entrance to the forest, break the boulders leading to the orange
tree. Now you can "legitimately" reach them!
-Orange
Let's head back to town and go to the desert! When you first reach the
desert you'll see several vacant lots. A small, dried orchard just north
of these has a Sunflower tree.
-Sunflower
North of this area is a boulder blocking a set of stairs that leads to TWO
prospecting areas. These are some of my favorite essences. There are three
in each area, 1 corresponding to each essence type. The best thing though
is that instead of providing textures and colors, each of these six
essences paints an object translucent! If you wondered how Nicole Vogue
had a transparent table in her shop, now you know!
-Amber
-Amethyst
-Sapphire
-Garnet
-Jade
-Topaz
Past the second prospecting area is a small Black Rose tree.
-Black Rose
Now, head to the northwest corner of the desert. Around the large dinosaur
fossil you'll find a prospecting area:
-Dinosaur Fossil
-Megalizard
-Moai
-Skeleton
Past the fossil is a cemetary, which is a small prospecting area:
-Spider
-Voodoo Doll
At the back of the cemetary is a boarded up cave. Inside are two ghost
trees:
-Ghost (duplicate)
Head south in the desert. A small ridge half-way down holds three citrus
trees:
-Orange (duplicate)
-Lemon
-Lime
There is a small prospecting area in the ruins in the southern part of the
map. Its worth checking out, but some of the essences are a little rare:
-Elephant
-Hopi Doll
-Puppy
-Tiger
Just north of this area, on the side of the wall of the plateau is a small
cave entrance. Inside you'll find one of the last prospecting areas:
-Red Crayon
-Tim Doll
-Tina Doll
-Yellow Crayon
On the southern wall of the map is another cave entrance. This leads to an
area with four trees of a card-game flavor:
-Club
-Diamond
-Heart
-Spade
Now that we've found all the new essences, lets move some people in to
town. All of the Star Level 3 sims have some essences that can be
annoying or tedious to get your hands on. First, finish off moving in all
the Star Level 2 commercial Sims and complete their tasks. The best Star
Level 3 sim is probably Dolly Dearheart. She gives you the Costume Chest
blueprint in her first task. However, Goth Boy and Chef Watanabe have the
easiest tasks of the group to complete.
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
Star Level 4
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
Finally, you earn the blowtorch. There are only a handful of places to use
this on, so lets get to it and uncover those new essences!
Again, first head into the forest. In the center of the pond is a locked
gate to blowtorch. Break it down and enter the tree. You'll find two
checkered trees that have Pawn and Rook essences. Another locked gate
outside past the prospecting area across the river gives you the Knight
essence.
-Knight
-Pawn
-Rook
Now head to the desert. Use the blowtorch on the locked gate in the
southeast to open up 3 new land plots and two(!) fishing piers. The
southern one gives you Beachballs and Gold. The eastern one gives you Fish
Bones, Kissing Fish and Tiny Sharks.
-Beachball
-Fish Bones
-Gold
-Kissing Fish
-Tiny Shark
The locked gate to the west leads to the junkyard. There are a TON of
geeky essences here. Make sure you collect them all. Prospecting in the
first area gives you:
-Globe
-Pencil
Prospecting in the second area:
-Alien
-Rocket
-Star
Finally, head into the cave in the back to find three geeky trees. After
you harvest their essences at least once, melt down at least one to earn
the metal essence too!
-Gear
-Metal
-Robot
-Spring
Congratulations! You should have all 84 essences now!
All that is left to do is complete the tasks for everyone. If you have any
remaining Star Level 2 or 3 tasks to complete, you should finish them,
then move in the super cool Star Level 4 commercial sims. They're all
pretty even in the difficulty of their tasks. Once you complete these
you've earned...
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
Star Level 5
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
Now that you've unlocked everything, feel free to move in whomever you
wish into your town. You won't meet any more Commercial Sims, but you can
move in all the new and great Star Level 5 townies. One of the more
rewarding tasks at this point in the game is to find all six "UBER"
townies. There is one for each essence category in the game. You find
them by obtaining 100% interest in your town for that category. To earn
interest change all the items in the town to reflect that category. If you
want to unlock Samurai Bob, for instance, you would make everything in the
town very Studious. Studious houses, studious trees, studious furniture
for your sims. The more the better! Once you've reached that goal, you'll
receive a message that a special visitor is in the hotel.
SWEET!

Tips
-=-=-=-=
~ A lot of the building tasks require more essences than the blueprints
for that task might allow. There are several ways to fit the required
number of essences into an object:
* Use one of the more complex blueprints. If the sim requests a bed
for instance, try making the Bed - Canopy earned from Dolly Dearheart
* Break up larger blocks into smaller pieces. Usually the blueprint
uses larger blocks. You can fit more in if you break the pieces up.
* Add pieces. You're not limited to just the blueprint. Feel free to
add extra pieces to the design and color those with essences as well.
These can be any size or shape you like.
* Add flairs. Essences can easily be pasted onto the object as little
flairs. They're not always pretty, but if your goal is just to
accomplish the tasks, then they'll work nicely.
~ Trees are your best friend. A lot of sims ask for essences in abundance
to complete their tasks. Plant a couple trees ahead of time of the
required essences. This works especially well for Roxie Road with her
Cherry Blossom essences, for instance. Unfortunately, this doesn't work
for essences that you've prospected or fished.
~ Trees are also your worst enemy. Don't chop down the last tree you have
of an essence, then use the essence all up! If you do wish to chop down
a tree try to make sure that you're replanting one somewhere else. I'm
not sure if they grow back, but I doubt it. If worse comes to worse, try
to find an object that contains that essence then go edit it in your
workshop and steal one back to replant.
~ Most essences have 2 patterns and 2 solid colors. There are six special
essences that dont. They are translucent, so you can see right through
them! They are:
Garnet (Cute) ~ Red
Topaz (Fun) ~ Yellow
Sapphire (Geeky) ~ Blue
Amethyst (Spooky) ~ Purple
Jade (Studious) ~ Green
Amber (Tasty) ~ Orange
~ Befriending Cassandra the ghost can be annoying and time consuming. To
make matters worse, some of her "Be Nice" actions actually cause
negative reaction points. If you're quick enough, you can move your
sim before she finishes performing the action, cancelling it. That way
you won't lose the precious status you've worked hard to earn.
~ You don't need to wait until Star Level 5 to unlock the Uber townies.
They're available whenever you can obtain 100% of their essence
category. It's not hard at all with just the commercial sims who move
into town!
