Escape from Bug Island (Written by Delition Hikari).
This is a guide for Escape from Bug Island. I'm going to work
on it some more, but I figured that at the moment having a
semi-complete guide is better than having no guide at all.
Table of contents:
1. Controls
2. Storyline / Characters
3. General Hints (more coming soon)
4. Stages
5. Items (Healing, Key, Equipment)
6. Enemies (coming soon)
7. Notes
8. Endings and Rank
9. Copyright info and junk.
Version History:
0.3 (7/30/07): Completed up to the end of stage 6, along
with every item I have found up until then.
0.4 (7/31/07): Completed up to the end of stage 17, along
with everything else. Added notes, and
"Special Areas".
0.5 (7/31/07): Completed main storyline and notes. Still
need to add enemies, characters, controls,
and storyline, but I'll do that later.
0.6 (7/31/07-
8/01/07): Completed controls, endings and rank, and
started general hints. Still need enemies,
characters, and storyline, but that comes later.
Received "A" rank, obtaining the powerful
Death Scythe.
0.7 (8/01/07-
8/02/07): Found some new things, finished with 9,999 total
fragments, unlocking unlimited ranged weapons,
along with some new pendants. Still can't figure
out how to get different endings, though.
0.75 (8/14/07): Added a bit to the enemies section, but I'm still
not sure about the point of getting all bonus
objectives (if any). At this point, I'm sure
they are there for nothing but getting more
fragments to unlock items and personal records.

Controls
========
The controls are quite basic. I'll show what each button does,
followed by a brief description.
Nunchuk side:
-Control Stick: Movement / Item Selection
Desc: As it says, it moves Ray (not emotionally). If the remote
is not facing the screen, it also allows you to select
different menu options.
-C Button: Turn light ON / OFF
Desc: It does what it says.
-Z Button: Cycle through active weapons.
Desc: Switches between equipped normal and ranged weapon. If you
are out of the equipped ranged weapon, you can't switch
until you equip a new ranged weapon.
-Swing: Rolling dodge / backstep / evasion
Desc: Swinging the nunchuk makes you dodge to the left (if playing
in right-handed mode) or to the right (if playing in left-
handed mode). Swinging the nunchuk towards you while holding
down on the control stick allows you to do a backstep.
Remote side:
-Pointer: Item selection
Desc: Item selection in menus. Nothing more.
-+ Control Pad: Item selection
Desc: Same as the pointer. The pointer can't be on the screen
in order to use the + pad, though.
-A Button: Change perspective / special actions
Desc: Pressing this when (A) appears at the bottom of the
screen allows you to search the area, or pick up items, or
light lamps. Whatever the condition is. When that isn't
at the bottom of the screen, it changes your view to first-
person mode. Being in this mode allows you to stab with
your normal weapon by pressing (B), allows you to shoot
with guns by pressing (B), and allows you to throw ranged
weapons by holding (B) and doing a throwing motion forward.
Sarcastic Safety Warning: Make sure to have your wrist strap
on when doing a throwing motion.
-Plus Button: Pause screen / skip events
Desc: Pressing this brings up the menu. It also skips movies (as
does (B), as I found out during the ending movie).
-B Button: Cancel item selection / use weapon
Desc: If you are in the menu, it cancels out of whatever you were
doing. If in the field, hold (B) and swing the remote to
use melee weapons. Hold (A) and hit (B) to use guns, and
hold (A) then hold (B) and swing the remote to use ranged
weapons.
-Swing: Attack / rolling dodge / evasion
Desc: It's been covered in the (A) and (B) button sections for
attacking, and works the same as the nunchuk for the dodge.
Special commands:
-Panic mode: When you hear the music change and your view changes
as well, start shaking the nunchuk and remote like a
wild man (or woman). Some bosses have "Panic mode
bars", which fill up as you shake. Failure to get
a "Panic mode bar" filled up is usually quite bad,
especially against the final boss (it follows up
with an instant-kill attack).
-Balancing: Hold the wii remote forward and twist the remote so
that the cursor stays within the blue area. If you
fail to do that, you'll start to fall. You can regain
your composure by staying in the blue area this time
around. If you are hit by a rock on a bridge, you'll
fall off immediately, and if you are hit by a fish,
you'll go into falling mode immediately (unless you
are already falling, then you'll just fall).
=============
General Hints
=============
1. Get used to playing with the flashlight off. While it is quite
useful when you are starting out, it is more of a hinderance
later on in the game. It sucks to go through hard mode only
to attract a swarm of bugs to you because you forgot to turn
off your light.
2. Get heart mushrooms. This may sound completely useless, but
just remember that if you load a file after you beat the game,
you'll retain your max health and your purple fragments.
3. At the moment, it seems as though the purple fragments are
only used to unlock hidden items after a certain number are
collected. For instance, after beating the game at least once,
it seems that the samurai sword is only available after gathering
3,000 purple fragments. Secret items appear as purple beacons
on your map. Sometimes purple beacons can be grenades as well.
The maximum number of purple fragments is 9,999.
======
Stages
======
First stage (Map: Ruins).
1. Pick up knife from log opposite you (if available).
2. Travel to the lower left portion of the map.
3. Work your way up and left from lower left.
1. Move forward, watch cut-scene, and kill mantises.
2. Head as far North as you can without going up the
big hill. You should see a cut-scene involving a
nest. Kill the mantis(es), and knock down the nest.
3. Take the lighter, and head towards the house in the
middle. Light the lamp.
4. Head up the hill and enter the shack.
5. Go through dialog then head back down hill.
6. To the east of the hill exit is the bag. Use
Henry's key and open it to get insecticide.
7. Return to Henry in the shack.
8. Defeat Gorilla by hitting it in the head.
9. Follow Gorilla after defeating it.
Bonus Conditions:
1. Get 10 oranges.
2. Kill 10 Praying Mantises.
3. Fall in all of the traps.
There are 8 traps in this level. It's hard for me to give decent
directions as to where they are, but I'm going to try anyways.
There are no traps up the hill, where you meet Henry and Lynn.
Also, you can see the circular outline of the trap and you need
to step almost directly in the middle of the circle to fall into
the hole.
1. South-East of the bottom of the ramp up the hill.
2. North-East of the house where you use the lighter.
3. South-East of the house where you use the lighter.
It's almost exactly between that house and the
shack to the South-East of it on the map.
4. Almost directly South of the mantis nest tree.
5. South-West of the house where you use the lighter.
It's almost exactly between the house and the small
ledge to the South-East.
6. Directly North of the entrance to the map.
7. Directly South of the shack near Henry's bag.
8. Directly North of the Northern-most shack on the map.
End of second stage.
Third stage (Map: Forest).
1. Head West towards the first shack (yellow marker).
2. Head East through hollow log.
3. Head North-East after the log (light off) to find
Heart Mushroom.
4. Head North-West after the log. Ignore South-East,
as it contains a trapped "shiny item in hole".
5. After going up the hill head East, ignoring the bridge.
6. Go down the "steps" to where the crickets are.
7. First "Cricket Pit" (under first bridge) contains two
boxes. Probably not worth the risk. Second "Cricket
Pit" (under the second bridge) contains a sickle. The
sickle is needed to cut down ivy in a little bit.
8. Head back up to bridges and cross.
9. Head into nearest shack for a save point.
10. Head North-West from shack (ignoring the roots) in order
to find the baseball bat.
11. Head North from shack (on the roots) and climb up to the
next branch. Watch the cut-scene and head left.
12. Watch next cut-scene and go down. Optional: Head left
and keep going to inspect the shiny item in hole to get
a grenade.
13. Head North from the cut-scene area to find some thin ivy
(not to be confused with the ivy just South of it). Cut
the ivy with the sickle to continue.
Bonus Conditions:
1. Get a bat.
2. Kill 50 Crickets
3. Kill 20 Carnivorous Plants.
End of stage 3.
Stage 4 (Map: River).
1. Head West and go across bridge (gorilla won't follow on
bridge).
2. Head North-East, making sure to kill anything necessary.
Head East across bridge, avoiding the flying fish.
3. Head North, curving towards the left. Unless you have
killed the gorilla, going right just isn't worth it.
4. At the broken bridge, throw rocks at the log stuck in the
water to dislodge it.
5. Keep following the path (extremely linear here).
6. After the next bridge (with more flying fish), look
towards the tree tops. There's a steel pipe waiting to
be knocked down.
7. After the steel pipe segment is another broken bridge. Do
the same thing as before.
8. Keep heading West until you curve South. In one of the boxes
is the safe key.
9. Head North and go into the shack. Use the safe key and get
the honey. Head East to finish the level.
Bonus Conditions:
1. Get a steel pipe.
2. Kill 2 giant gorillas.
3. Kill 20 flies.
End of stage 4.
Stage 5 (Map: Path).
1. Head up path (with light off), avoiding spiders and rocks.
2. After ant cut-scene, you can use the insecticide on the ants
in oder to obtain ant bombs. Just remember that the honey
can disappear and you have to use more on the tree or else
the ants will attack you.
3. Spread honey on all of the thick trees you come across on
the way up, to avoid some ant attacks.
4. At the top, you'll notice an ant colony. Use throwing items
on it to avoid being caught in the blast when it is destroyed.
5. Head past the colony, towards the red marker and the bridge.
avoid going right (North) in the colony area, as it just wastes
time (you'll be back later).
6. Go across the bridge. Avoid the white box to the right of the
bridge entrance as it is locked and you need the combination.
7. On the bridge, either attack or avoid the small spiders while
crossing. Towards the end, don't try and cross. Instead,
hit the large spider with throwing items to knock it off.
8. Proceed onward to clear the stage.
Bonus Conditions:
1. Get 5 oranges.
2. Kill 1 Giant Gorilla.
3. Get 20 ant bombs.
End of stage 5.
Stage 6 (Map: Hillside).
1. Head into the house in front of you. As you try and leave
you trigger an enemy arrival cut-scene. This may seem like
a bad thing, but you need to kill them in order to get past
the one-hit-kill swarm at the north. Watch out, though,
since once you kill a couple, the swarm will "help you out"
by trying to devour everything else (including you, but it
isn't one-kit-kill anymore). Take this time to head north,
past the swarm's original place.
2. Optional: If you need to (or want to), to the east after
the swarm is a bread fruit tree.
3. Follow the eastern path anyways after the swarm. A little
bit to the north you'll see a bridge. Cross it to get the
trunk key.
4. Head North from the swarm point (up a hill) and cross
the bridge to find a heart mushroom. This isn't to be
confused with the bridge directly to the North-East of the
swarm point, because that just wastes time (You could just
as easily curve to the East there and arrive at the same
place, perhaps even faster than taking the shorter route).
5. If you feel it necessary, you can head entirely West after
the swarm point in order to find a small shack containing
an item. I believe it is always a can of food on the first
trip through, and handgun bullets on the second. I could
be wrong (wouldn't be the first time).
6. Back on track, head back to the first house. Go inside and
use the trunk key in order to get the machete and the barn
key.
7. Head as far North as you can go and go through the barn.
8. Head North and view both cut-scenes.
9. Don't bother trying to kill the creature, as it doesn't
change anything. Instead, run towards the red marker.
10. View the cut-scene and head towards the marker again to
finish the stage.
Since this is a rather confusing place to give directions in,
I'll just tell you the route to take.
-Optional: At the first split, you can go South followed by
travelling East to get a heart mushroom (light off, though)
Return to first split afterwards, as the other paths south
are dead ends.
-Main Exit: Starting with the very first split, go:
-West
-North
-North
-East
-North
-North
Unless you are at a split, just keep following the path.
Barbed Wire: From First Split, go:
-North
-North
-South
Bonus Objectives:
1. Get Barbed Wire
2. Kill 5 Canine Men
3. Kill 5 Lizard Women
End of stage 7.
Stage 8 (Map: Temple)
1. Head West before the stairs to find the praying mantises.
Destroy the nest to find the mystic plate.
2. Head into the room directly in front of the top of the
stairs in order to obtain the lance.
3. With the mystic plate in tow, go to the room to the East
of the entrance. You have to place the plate in the
hole to the right of the door to proceed.
4. Watch the cut-scene and head outside.
5. Follow the red marker to finish the level.
Bonus Objectives:
1. Get a lance.
2. Kill 15 Praying Mantises.
3. Kill a Giant Gorilla.
End of stage 8.
Stage 9 (Map: Cave of Time)
1. Follow the path to find a book and one of the most
irritating parts in this game for me, the falling
rock bridge.
2. Continue north, to the second large chamber. In the
North-West offshoot of this chamber is a heart mushroom.
3. Go South-East and follow the trail. Continue following
the trail until you drop down from a ledge.
4. Watch the cut-scene, and proceed to help as quick as you
can (less than 30 sec. for the easiest bonus in the game).
5. Proceed North-West from your current location, making sure
to go at a relatively slow pace due to your nearly
incapacitated tag-along. In the next chamber head North,
killing all of the spiders along the way. Avoiding them
doesn't really help, since your partner moves extremely
slow and stops if you get too far ahead. Don't worry,
though, as you can't hurt them.
6. Head towards the North-West with your partner to watch
a cut-scene. After the cut-scene, head towards the
large rock in the north to watch a final cut-scene.
Bonus Objectives:
1. Get 1 heart mushroom.
2. Save Michelle in 30 seconds.
3. Kill 15 spiders.
End of stage 9.
Now that you have cleared the first half-ish of this game,
some stuff may seem really repetitive. When going through
the levels again, keep a look out for things you may have
missed the first time through. Also, in the second run
through, there are now areas that were blocked off before
that have been mysteriously un-blocked. Any of these areas
will be marked as "Special Areas", and I will make note of
the entrances in the walkthrough. Watch out, though, as the
special areas do not have maps of their own to look at. Instead,
you have to use the mini-map if you get lost. Remember, you
need to re-visit the special area to get the second weapon.
Stage 10 (Map: Ruins).
1. Head straight forward to unlock Michelle's bag (looks
like a suitcase next to the tent). Obtain the handgun
and the pocket light, along with the bullets.
2. Head to the South-West, and follow the path, as before.
1. Special Area 1: To access, go west as soon as you can
into the cave.
2. Light the lamp in the house.
3. Travel to Harry and Lynn in the West.
4. Go destroy the mantis nest (where you got the lighter).
Don't destroy the nest before you visit Harry and Lynn,
because it respawns.
5. Return to Harry and Lynn. Hit the gorilla in the face
while avoiding or killing the mantises (you only have to
hit the gorilla once).
6. Head to the next stage.
Bonus Objectives:
1. Get 5 Red Mushrooms.
2. Kill 20 Praying Mantises.
3. Get 2 treasures in the cave.
End of stage 11.
Stage 12 (Map: Forest).
1. Head through the rotten log, as before. The shiny object
to the South-East afterwards is no longer trapped.
2. Head up the hill. The pits are no longer filled with
crickets. Instead they are filled with caterpillars
and flies. Not fun. Neither pit contains anything
worthwhile anymore, so just avoid them and go across the
bridges.
3. Don't bother with the bat area, as it only contains
numerous baby centipedes now.
4. Go up the root, but instead of climbing up to the next
root, keep going. There's a heart mushroom at the end.
5. Go up the root and shoot the bag (if you wish). Collect
the grenade within. Break the box right behind the bag
to obtain the blue pendant.
6. Head North through the tree.
7. Special Area 2: Head slightly North-West after the tree
to find the cave.
8. Head North again, and cut the thick vines to proceed.
9. Hidden: In order to get 2 heart mushrooms here, you need
to come back here from the river. In other
words, you need to go to the path and circle
back.
Bonus Objectives:
1. Get 2 heart mushrooms.
2. Kill 20 toxic caterpillars.
3. Get 2 treasures in the cave.
End of stage 12.
Stage 13 (Map: Swamp).
1. Head North across the first bridge. Take a sharp right
and go across the balancing bridge. Watch out, as lizard
women will try and knock you down. At the other end is
a heart mushroom.
2. Head North-East after returning from the balancing bridge,
across an actual bridge. The garbage to the East is
trapped, so don't bother.
3. Head North from the garbage over the balancing bridges.
The actual bridge collapses, sending you into the drink.
4. Follow this little land mass North and cross the river
to the North-West. Check the garbage to find a rusted
key.
5. Keep following the path North-West, crossing the river
when necessary. When at the furthest North-West you can
go, take the bridge to the East.
6. Enter the house with the rusted key and grab some molotov
cocktails.
7. Head directly South from where you picked up the rusted
key (you need to enter the river to do this). Throw a
Molotov at the nest to clear it.
8. Go through where the nest was to clear the level.
1. Head towards the bridge to find the giant spider.
2. Throw a molotov to the right of the bridge (at the
spider's nest) to enrage the spider enough so that
it comes on the bridge. Now that it is vulnerable,
kill it.
3. Save Mike, take his shotgun, his bag combination, and
his pride. Go to the starting side of the bridge and
use the combination on the bag to get shotgun shells
and a gas mask. Head out afterwards.
4. Optional: You can actually backtrack down the mountain
to reach the river, since the river was
inaccessible before. If you are going for
100% completion you will want to stop by,
especially since the reward for doing so
is a heart mushroom and a 100% in the forest.
The second time through the river will be
marked as "Special Area 4".
Bonus Conditions:
1. Kill 10 flies.
2. Kill 30 baby spiders.
3. Kill giant spider in under 1 minute.
End of stage 14.
Stage 15 (Map: Hillside).
1. Special Area 3: Directly to the West of the entrance
lies the entrance to this cave.
2. Head to the barn, and go through. I couldn't find
anything spectacular.
3. Boss: Sand Worm.
-As far as I can see, there are three ways to beat this
boss. You can wait for it to emerge and pelt it with
either ranged or normal weapons. You can also lure it
towards an ant colony and destroy the colony (they
take 4-5 hits with a normal weapon, so I do a full
combo before the boss gets there and then hit it a few
times afterwards). The last one is the same as the
second one, but just a tad bit different. Near the
edge of the cliff there is an ant colony. If you
lure the worm onto the small amount of land near the
colony you can destroy the land when you destroy the
colony (you can see the crack in the ground where it
gets destroyed). The best part about using the last
technique is that it gets you the bonus objective.
Be warned: If you destroy a colony with a normal
weapon, you'll get hurt.
4. Leave afterwards.
Bonus Conditions:
1. Get 10 ant bombs.
2. Get 2 treasures in the cave.
3. Hurl giant worm off cliff.
End of Stage 15.
Stage 16 (Map: Cave to the Peak).
1. To get to the heart mushroom, go:
-West
-North
-North
-East
-North
-West
2. Leave.
1. You can destroy the mantis nest again to get another
heart mushroom. Just make sure to kill it after you
get the bonus condition "Kill 30 praying mantises",
because the nest is the only spawn point for them.
2. Head towards the red beacon, which is where Michelle
is. Watch the cut-scene.
3. Head towards where you used the mystic plate before.
Go inside and watch the cut-scene. Go outside to
fight the gorilla.
4. Kill gorilla then head into cave.
1. Go to where you first found Beelzebub.
2. Boss: Beelzebub.
-This boss takes a lot of punishment. Just remember,
though, that the game isn't over afterwards (yes, there's
another boss...hooray). So in other words, let loose
with everything you have...in moderation.
One of the more irritating things about this battle is the
fact that there are numerous flies getting in your way.
If you are trying to take the boss out with normal weapons,
this isn't much of a problem. When trying to hit with ranged
weapons or guns is when it gets tricky. Nothing is more
annoying than trying to throw a grenade only to have a fly
go right in front of you when you throw it.
-If you go too far away, he uses a ranged attack, and if you
get too close he hits closer. Either way it's a nuisance,
so just go with what you're given. Unfortunately, I haven't
developed a solid fail-proof strategy for any of the bosses
in this game.
3. After the boss, leave.
Bonus Conditions:
1. Kill 20 flies.
2. Kill 20 maggots.
3. Kill Beelzebub in under 2 minutes.
End of stage 18.
Stage 19 (Map: Temple/Ruins)
1. After numerous character interaction dialog head towards
the exit of the temple.
2. Fight your way through numerous flies and mantises to head
towards the boat. Once you get there, watch the cut-scene
and get ready for the final boss.
3. Boss: Mutated Robert
-Personally, I saved all of my ammo for the shotgun and handgun
for the battles against Beelzebub and this guy. Again I don't
have a fail-proof strategy, but I prefer ranged weapons here,
especially since his insect rain attack is rather annoying.
-Watch out after his scream (where you need to shake the remote
to get out of it), because he has a follow up instant-kill move
that can still hit you even if you aren't in panic mode. He
also has a "sonic boom"-esque move that he does if you get too
close.
-He has less HP than Beelzebub did, but he is also a lot faster.
Congratulations on beating "Escape from Bug Island(!)". If you
weren't playing it on hard, you should try it. If you were, try
and get a better score.
Special Areas: Unfortunately, the special areas (aside from the
river) are completely randomized. There's a good
chance the treasure may not even be in the cave
that time around. For those trying to get 100%,
I suggest finding a save point nearby. Just save,
go through the cave, and if the item isn't there
just reload. After getting one item, save again,
and repeat.
Special Area 1 (From Map: Grove).
Shovel
Mantis Scythe
End of special area 1.
Special Area 2 (From Map: Forest).
Sledgehammer
Pitchfork
End of special area 2.
Special Area 3 (From Map: Hillside)
White Pendant
Spiked Club
End of special area 3.
Special Area 4 (River, From Map: Path).
1. There really isn't anything that I have found here.
The main reason to come to the river is to go to the
beginning of the map to get to the forest to find a
cleverly hidden heart mushroom. Aside from that,
all that there is to do is get the bonus objectives.
Orange: Small Health Recovery
Red Mushroom: Small Health Recovery
Brown Mushroom: Medium Health Recovery
Mango: Medium Health Recovery
Heart Mushroom: Increases Max Health
Purple Mushroom: "Effect is unknown till you eat..." can
either hurt or heal you (random). Quite
useless if you have other things to heal
with, but can mean the difference between
life and death in the right situations.
Can of Food: Maximum Health Recovery
Bread Fruit: Large Health Recovery

I had over 3,000 purple pieces when I first
found it. If you clear the game with an "A" or
"S" rank, you'll start the next round with this
in your inventory.
Death Scythe: "Weird looking scythe". As far as I know, it is
only obtainable by clearing the game with an "A"
or "S" rank. It'll be in your inventory in the
next round. A powerful weapon, it's great for
tying to get the "Kill boss in x minutes" objectives.
Throwing Weapons
----------------
Rock: "Found in a pile". Found in numerous piles, actually.
Max Cap. = 99
Grenade: "Powerful but dangerous weapon". Found in a few
different places.

Sandbag: "Bag filled with sand". Pretty much useless, in my
opinion.
Max Cap. = 99
Ant Bomb: "From a dead ant". Found after using insecticide on
bomb ants.
Max Cap. = 30
Molotov Cocktail: "Bottle filled with gasoline". Found in
stage 13, used to clear nests.
Max. Cap. = 10
Accessories
-----------
Dharma Pendant: "Favorite Pendant". Initial Equip.
Blue Pendant: "Feels solid". Found in stage 12.
From what I can tell, the blue pendant increase
Ray's defense. If anyone knows exactly what it
does, let me know. Can also be found as a
"hidden item" in stage 3, but only after
a certain condition is met. Personally I had
3,530 Purple fragments, and it was my 3rd time
through the game when I first found it.
White Pendant: "Feels balanced". Found in secret area 3.
The white pendant makes it easier to balance
on "balancing bridges". Great for the final
bridges. It's a shame that you get it so late
in the game.
Black Pendant: "Feels repulsive". Found in stage 16, where barbed
wire was. At this time I had over 5,000 purple
fragments. Also found in stage 7 with over 7,000
fragments. I'm not sure, but I think it may be
a slight repellant for anything right next to you.
When I had it equipped, the lizard women went into
their "I'm going to grab you" pose, but ended up
slashing me instead (sometimes). If anyone truly
knows, let me know.
Red Pendant: "Feels Strong". Found in stage 13, in the same house
where you receive the molotov cocktails. I had over
9,000 purple fragments when I got it. It actually
does increase your strength, as before I equipped
it the lizard women in the area took two hits to fall
over, and after equipping it they took only one.
Purple Pendant: "Feels Healthy" Found in stage 1. At the time,
I had 9,999 purple fragments. As you probably
guessed, it heals your health slowly (very slowly)
over time. Picking it up gives you infinite
throwing items and infinite bullets.
EDIT: I'm not 100% sure anymore, so if
anyone has any solid proof, please
let me know.
Lights
------
Flashlight: "Light brought from home". Initial Equip.
Pocket Light: "Can be worn on chest". Found in stage 10
after cave of time. Allows you to use two-
handed weapons without turning off the light.
=======
Enemies
=======
Centipedes: Come in two variations, the baby centipede and the
adult centipede. The baby centipedes can be crushed
just by walking on them, but the adult ones need
to be hit. Adult centipedes can attack you, but the
babies can only crawl up you to activate panic.
Flying Fish: Can be killed in one hit. Can leap to latch on
to you, and can only be removed by rolling.
Praying Mantis: Fairly common enemies, the praying mantises can
do just a basic swipe with their claw or they
can pick you up and try to eat you (panic).
Fly: Flies cannot hurt you, but they can stun you
enough for other enemies nearby to hurt you.
Flies only require one hit to be brought down,
so I usually just stop to attack quickly and
continue on my way.
Carnivorous
Plant: Carnivorous plants are essentially bear traps.
They only require a few hits to be taken down,
but they are easy to avoid as well. If you
need to kill them for an objective I'd say go
for it, but if they are just there I'd say avoid
them.
Frog: Giant frogs that can spit projectiles at you
from afar, and try to belly flop on you as
you get close. When you kill them they go
into a death animation, so just recognize
the animation and move on afterwards. It's
a waste to try to kill something that is already
dead.
Giant Gorilla: Whenever you meet a giant gorilla, aim for its
head. This causes it to reel back in pain, allowing
you to get in a few extra hits. If you aren't
facing a storyline related gorilla, the death
scythe works wonders. For the "Beat the Giant
Gorilla in 30 seconds", here is what I did (taken
from my post on one of the forums):
On hard mode, it takes 14 grenades to kill it.
The best way to do that is to roll twice to the
left when the match starts. After rolling, turn
towards the gorilla and do a back step (this
should all be done while it is invincible during
the very beginning). Throw a grenade at its face,
and when it recoils, throw 6 more. As it charges
at you afterwards, roll to the left again, turn
towards it and throw 7 more grenades.
(Note: This is just how I did it. I'm sure other
strategies work, but this has worked twice for me.
Of course, it is best to save before this, in case
you don't get the bonus objective.)
More to come...

Notes
=====
These are the notes left behind by the last group on the
island. I know that I haven't gotten all of them, so if
there is one that I am missing feel free to write it down.
All yellow text will be in caps.
-The Arrival-
February 28
We've finally made it to the island.
The original idea was to set up camp outside, but someone
forgot to bring the tent poles. I would have liked to
sleep under the stars, but my girlfriend is allergic to
mosquitos, so we had to break into one of the cabins. I
don't think anyone lives here anymore; although it seems
that whoever did left in a hurry. I hope they don't plan
to come back any time soon...
-Little Insects-
February 28
There's a body in the woods! We found it hiking today.
At first we thought it was a moose, but then my girlfriend
pointed out that there are no moose on this island. Then
we saw the skull, and it was definitely human. On our way
back to camp, one of my buddies walked into a SWARM OF
BUGS; he lost a lot of blood. WE TURNED OUR FLASHLIGHTS
OFF, AND THEY PRETTY MUCH LEFT US ALONE AFTER THAT.
-Giant Mantises-
February 29
Giant bugs just ate one of my friends...Actually, from the
sound of it, they are still eating him. The rest of us are
hiding out until they go away. We passed something that
looked like a GIANT NEST earlier; it was up in one of the
trees. It looks like I might be able to KNOCK IT DOWN if I
can find something to throw at it...My girlfriend ran off a
little while ago. She's been acting strange ever since we
got here. I wonder if it is her mosquito allergy? Anyhow,
she dropped her LIGHTER. I'll give it back to her once I
find her. I just hope she doesn't get eaten before then...
I think I know why no one lives here anymore.
-Creepy Noise-
March 1
There is something big living on this island. As far as I
can tell, it's at least two stories tall. It almost caught
me earlier, but I HIT IT IN THE FACE, and got away. My
friends don't believe me. I'm still looking for my girlfriend.
I found her tracks in the mud earlier; I'm surprised she was
able to run so far in heels. Maybe next time she'll listen
to me when I tell her to pack sneakers.
-Jumping Insects-
March 2
I saw an interesting thing today. There was SOMETHING
GLITTERING DOWN IN THE RAVINE. I noticed it as we crossed
over on the logs. One of my friends went to go check it out,
but he didn't make it back. Apparently, crickets think we
make good babysitters.
-Enormous Tree-
March 2
PULSING, RED MUSHROOMS freak me out. I was hungry, so I ate
one, and I have never felt better. I found one of my
girlfriend's hair clips near this gigantic tree. It looks
like there's a way through to the other side. I wonder what
posessed her to go this way?
There's this THING HANGING IN THE TREE. I don't know why, but
I really want it. There's no way to get it down with what
I have now, but I can't stop thinking about it. If only I
had a gun...
-Sickle-
March 3
VINES are blocking my path. I need something SHARP TO CUT
THEM; my knife just bounces off. I know my girlfriend came
this way. She's small and wiry, so she probably just slipped
through.
-Key to the Safe-
March 4
I think all of my friends are dead. I feel bad, but then,
none of us were that close. There was a SAFE inside this
weird shed near the river. I was about to open it, but then
that gigantic thing started chasing me again, and I LOST THE
KEY IN A PILE OF MAGGOTS. Whatever was in that safe can't
have been that important.
-Contents of Safe-
March 5
There seems to be SOMETHING LEAKING FROM THE TREES. It has
a sweet tase, and the EXPLODING BUGS around here seem to love
it. They run right for it and ignore me, which is fine as
far as I'm concerned. I find myself wondering if my girlfriend
is alive, and even so, if it is worth it to look for her...
-Eerie Forest-
March 6
Well, I found my girlfriend. At least, I think it's my
girlfriend. She recognized me right off the bat and ran off
into the woods. I'm glad she's alive, but then that means
she still probably won't let me use her phone. Oh well.
There's a SHED WHOSE BACK DOOR LEADS INTO THE HILL up ahead.
I guess I should go look for the key to get through.
-About the Women-
March 7
Apparently, my girlfriend has taken up with a colony of
Amazonian LIZARD WOMEN. I have decided that enough is enough.
Unfortunately, it didn't go over so well when I tried to break
it off, so I was forced to HIT HER IN THE FACE WITH A BAG OF
SAND and make my immediate escape. Call me callous, but I
can't envision spending the rest of my life with a woman who
eats bugs for lunch.
-Key to the Shed-
March 7
I know this sounds weird, but I really like STICKING MY HAND
INTO WEIRD PLACES. Like HOLES IN ROCKS, or dents in GARBAGE.
When I was a kid, I used to hide things in spots like these.
Maybe it's a bad idea to go reaching into random crevasses
around this island. But, for some reason, I can't stop myself.
Oh well.
-Gift of Fire-
March 7
I just found some EXPLOSIVES!
I'm not sure why someone would leave them here like this, you'd
think it would be a fire hazard. But then again, I'm not
complaining. I wonder if these would work on some of the BUG
NESTS in the area? I should go find that GIANT SPIDER again...
-Giant Worm-
March 8
SOMETHING ENORMOUS LIVES UNDER THE SAND. It reminds me of a
monster in a movie I once saw. I'm not sure how I'll get past
this one.
I think maybe I should just turn around and head back. But then,
I'd have to face my ex-girlfriend, and we didn't part on the best
of terms. I guess I'll take my chances with the sand monster.
It's times like this, when I wish I hadn't used all my GRENADES.
-Inhabitant-
March 9
I found a KEY! At least I think it was a key. I guess I'll never
know, seeing as I DROPPED IT WHEN I WAS RUNNING FROM SOME GIANT
MANTIS BUGS OUTSIDE.
I've taken up hiding in a huge temple. I was hoping there would
be someone here, someone with a helicopter, or a flamethrower.
But, no luck there. I suppose I can make my way back down the
mountain and try to swim home...
-Escape-
March 10
I slept at the temple last night. The beds were cozy, but after
checking out some of the STATUES IN THE COURTYARD, I was a little
frightened that they would FALL OVER and crush me in my sleep.
I can't help but feel sad about the last few days. It's strange,
to have come this far, and for what? In any case, I suppose I
shouldn't dwell on what's happened...It's not as if I can change
the past. Besides, in some ways, I'm probably better off.
There are strange noises outside the window, now. I suppose I
should go out and see what they are...Could it be a person who
lives here? If so, then perhaps I can finally make my ESCAPE...
FROM BUG ISLAND.
-The Cave of Time- (From: Necro-Notes)
The Cave of Time
The island of Beelzebub exists at the focal point of one of the
most active geological areas in the world. This constant
volcanic activity has created a complex chain of caves beneath
the island's surface.
The constant flow of molten lava beneath these caves combines
with the strong conductivity of the surrounding rocks. This
leads to an intense irregularity in the area's magnetic field.
This not only has an enormous effect on the ecological advance of
the island insect life, but has been rumored to create a
fluxuating warp in the fabric of space and time. Scientists
theorize that it is possible for bodies to pass through the 'bend'
in time at specific intervals, however, the accuracy of these
statements has not yet been proven.
================
Endings and Rank
================
When you beat the game, of course you get an ending and a rank from
E to S as to how you did in the game. The game gives you an average
ranking from the following categories:
Time: Less than 2:30 = S
Total Deaths: 0 = S
Total Enemies Killed: Over 1,000 = S
Unlocked Bonus (Bonus Objectives complete): Over 30 = S
I'm not 100% sure as to whether these are completely accurate, but
I'm going off of what seems right. For instance, in one round I
had 27/57 for unlocked bonus, but got an A. In the next, I got 32
out of 57, and got a S rank for that category. This of course
means that the border for getting an S rank is lower than 32 but
higher than 27, and 30 seems good.
For completing the game with an total S or A ranking, you get to
start the next round with the samurai sword and the death scythe
in your inventory. Good news, as they are both good weapons.
Also, for clearing the game with max purple fragments
makes the purple pendant appear. Picking this up will give you
infinite numbers for all of the ranged weapons. You still need to
find one of the items before they can be used, of course. You can't
throw infinite grenades without any grenades to begin with. It also
gives you unlimited ammo for your guns.
Endings:
So far I have seen two different endings. I used to think that
the ending you recieved was obtained by the ranking you got, but
that isn't the case (I got the same ending for a rank "A" as a
rank "C"). I'm thinking it may be either by time or whether you
defeat the final boss with a "hidden weapon" (I used the samurai
sword both times and beat the game in a short amount of time for
when I got the "odd" ending). If anyone has any idea, or if you
have seen a different ending than I have listed, let me know.
Typical Ending: Ray hops in the boat docked at the island and
starts driving. Ahead of him, Michelle looks
out of the helicopter window to see Ray driving
the boat below.
Odd Ending: Ray hops in the boat docked at the island and
starts driving. While looking straight at Ray,
he coughs. While his head is slightly down, we
can see that the final boss wasn't truly dead.
