Q) How many items are there?  What are they all?

A) 47 in total, 12 on each 'layer' of the box apart from 11 on the fourth
  layer.  However, 10 of these are comprised of four pieces each, so there are
  actually 77 items/item-pieces to find.  The 47 are:

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q) How do I find the items?

A) It depends.  There are basically two types of items; those that are in fixed
  locations and those which are randomly placed.  The fixed ones 'shine'
  repeatedly to indicate where they are. and this can be seen from quite a
  distance.  The random ones don't shine, but have a small probability of
  appearance when  you're investigating the usual shines that occur to show
  where the zoom mode should be used to see small fishes.  Random ones can
  also show up over and over again, for no benefit upon collection.

  Of the fixed ones, some aren't available for collection from the get-go
  though in their normal location.  These are;

  * Patrick's Pocket Watch      (unlocked as standard in the plot)
  * Old Bracelet                (unlocked by the 'White Dolphin' email)
  * Life Beads                  (unlocked by the 'Strange Ceremony' email)

  Precise details of unlocking can be found below in the item description.

  Of the 28 random ones, whilst the exact location is random, the items are
  divided between the different play areas.  They are distributed as follows:

  Manaurai Sea
  ------------
  * Memorable Shell
  * Goddess Shell
  * Vintage Lighter
  * Tin Toy
  * Wine Glass
  * Elusive Napoleon Coin
  * Antique Cup
  * Silver Fork
  * Glass Perfume Bottle
  * Expensive Fountain Pen
  * German-made Harmonica
  * Very Rare Drinks Can
  * Glass Buoy

  Great Aqua Cave
  ---------------
  * Calcified Fossil
  * Amber Lizard
  * Obsidian Arrowhead
  * Whalebone Lure

  Abyss
  -----
  * Aqua Amethyst
  * Steel Shell
  * Stone Mask
  * Ammonite Fossil

  Underwater Ruins of Marige Atoll
  --------------------------------
  * Good Luck Shells
  * ???????????????
  * ???????????????

  Ocean's Graveyard
  -----------------
  * Dream Shell
  * ???????????????
  * ???????????????
  * ???????????????

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q) So how do I find all the random items?

A) Good question.  I haven't yet!  They can sometimes appear with very low
  probability, and can also occur repeatedly eg, you find 10 Memorable Shells
  in a row (for no benefit after the first one) but can't find one of the
  other items after hours of searching!  It seems that their propensity to be
  found isn't entirely random; it's possible a certain item is more or less
  likely to appear depending on locations recently visited, or perhaps some
  are unlocked in certain seasons or after a certain amount of time has
  elapsed.

  I've been able to determine that the random item availability isn't
  affected either by performance in Diving Guide or Photo requests (I've
  played a file with neither ever fulfilled and plenty of random items easily
  found), but further than that the jury's still out on a method cleverer
  than just hours of searching!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q) Any searching tips?

A) Well, first of all get the mechanics right: swim near the surface you're
  searching (the floor is best most of the time) so the cursor goes yellow
  rather than blue.  Now swim along and gently wave the cursor left and right
  to 'scan' the most ground.  When it flashes, and a chime sounds, use the
  + button to go into search mode and see if the shine contains anything
  other than sealife.  9 out of 10 times it won't, but don't give up!

  For the Manaurai Sea items, my search routine is usually to park the
  Gabbiano next to the Secret Lake, and search the Ki Tsuo Promenade and
  Secret Lake sandy ocean floors.  This takes about 5 mins and an item is
  usually found; whether it's a new one or not is another thing.  And don't
  give up once you've got one, as I've found 3 on one dive before.

  For the other locations, the floors in the big rooms in the Great Aqua Cave
  are best (the first cave, and Great Column etc).  In the Abyss, search the
  sandy floor in the Graveyard.  In the Ruins I'd guess go for the sand again,
  and the ship deck in Ocean's Graveyard.  Then again, I've not found many of
  the items in these areas so I wouldn't consider myself an expert yet!

  Every now and again your partner will find an item, but this doesn't seem
  to signify anything particular - it's just one you haven't got to yet (or,
  frustratingly, one you've already found.  Shut it, porpoise!).

  Shells turn up all the time, so be prepared to hate the Memorable Shell with
  a passion.  And it might just be me, but the Striated Frogfish seems to be
  the greatest bearer of items as far as accompanying sealife goes.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q) Does anything happen when all of them are found?

A) Will have to wait for that one.  Seeing as the unlockable for completing
  the Guide to Marine Life is the White Mother unlocked in the Aquarium, I'd
  imagine it's a fairly minor unlocakble if anything...  However, there is
  another hint that might indicate something, an email recieved when the plot
  is completed:

Leonard D.:   Email: Treasure Trove

             "Apologies for writing to you out of the blue.  I specialise in
             all manner of oceanic research: I suppose you caould say we're
             in the same line of work.  I have heard a lot about your
             activities and it got me interested in the Manaurai Sea.  Along
             with new species of giant whales, you've also discovered ancient
             ruins.  It sounds like this sea is full of rich pickings, with
             statues and carvings waiting to be salvaged.  I hope to be able
             to visit the Manaurai Sea at some point and look forward to
             meeting you while I am there."

  So maybe he arrives to give you the 48th treasure if the other 47 are found?
  Unlikely, perhaps, as I know all 47 were found in the Japansese version and
  heard no mention of a 48th.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q) What unlockables are available by finding items?

  * Dolphin Medal and Patrick's Pocket Watch are essential to unlock further
    plot events.

  * The Pirate's Ship's locations are revealed by completing the Pirate's
    Compass.

  * Twinkle suit (female) or Burning heat suit (male) are unlocked by
    completing the Flame-patterned Vessel.

  * Intriguing Idol unlocks 5 Platinum hair styles: Mild, Modern, Chic, Loose
    for each item piece found, Simple when complete (female) or; Mild, Modern,
    Long, Normal for each item piece found, Mixed when complete (male).

  * Ability to read Ancient Manaurai Language is unlocked by completing the
    Nephrite Inscription.

  * Leaf green suit (female) or Intrepid suit (male) are unlocked by
    completing the Anomalocaris Fossil.

  * Hibiscus suit (female) or Light blue suit (male) are unlocked by
    completing the Red Coral.

  * Striped suit (female) or Mind's eye suit (male) are unlocked by completing
    the Golden Statue.

  * Curiosity suit (female) or Sea anenome suit (male) are unlocked by
    completing the Jingdezhen Plate.

  * Magu Tapah (giant great white shark) appears in the Ocean's Graveyard once
    the Shark-tooth Necklace is found.

  * The Orca (killer whale) appears in the Ocean's Graveyard once the Life
    Beads are found.

  * The Beluga (white dolphin) appears in the Underwater Ruins once the Old
    Bracelet has been found.

  * When all five shells are found (Memorable Shell, Goddess Shell, Good Luck
    Shells, Steel Shell, Dream Shell), Simple blond hairstyle (female) or
    Mixed blond hairstyle (male) are unlocked.

  See the specific item info below for details on the unlockables.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q) Do you need to get all the items to complete the game?

A) To complete the plot, no, only the Dolphin Medal and Patrick's Pocket Watch
  are essential.  If you want to fill your Guide to Marine Life, you're also
  going to need to get the Life Beads (Orca), Old Bracelet (Beluga),
  Shark-tooth Necklace (Magu Tapah) and Pirate's Compass (if you don't know
  where the Pirate's Ship is to get to all the Ocean's Graveyard creatures!).

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q) So collecting all the shells unlocks new hairstyles?

A) Yep, Simple blond hairstyle (female) or Mixed blond hairstyle (male).  When
  found, you get the folowing exchanges:

Catherine:  "Looks like you've been busy, collecting all these shells.  You've
           got quite a collection, from normal kinds to some rather rare ones
           too.  While we're on the subject of shells, don't you think they
           look kind of like hairstyles?  What's wrong?  It looks like you've
           got something on your mind...  What?  You want to change your
           hairstyle?  Okay, I see.  Well, if that's the case, I'll have
           Douglas prepare some material!"

Douglas
Ribona:       Email: New Hair Style

             "Catherine asked me to send over some new hair-styling goods, so
             here you go.  I just wonder what exactly you're planning to do
             with them...  Is someone going for a complete style overhaul?"

  As you can see, Catherine nearly manages to outdo herself in terms of
  embarrassingly contrived links, from shells to hairstyles.  Only beaten later
  on by her Picture Frame to hairstyles debacle.

1)  Dolphin Medal
*****************

Description:  A commemorative gold medal with a dolphin and a bay leaf motif,
             reading "16th Drift Race Champion".

Location:     Blue Hall, L2 (bottom right), on a platform coral just inside the
             north entrance.  Item becomes available after the email below is
             read, sent after the Coral Forest survey is complete.

Alfred
Tollman:      Email: Mysterious Manaurai

             "It seems that you have completed the ocean floor topography
             survey of Coral Forest.  Many thanks for this.  The Manaurai Sea
             remains full of mysteries, making surveys of this nature
             extremely valuable.  Speaking of mysteries, south of the lagoon
             there is a spot known as Blue Hall.  Occasionally unusual items
             have been known to turn up there, brought by the ocean currents.
             If you have time, perhaps you could go and see what you can
             find..."

Unlocks:      This is a plot event and thus allows the plot to continue; the
             Dolphin can now be followed back to the Lagoon and then led out
             to become your partner, which leads onto the next plot event.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

2)  Ancient Bronze Mirror
*************************

Description:  A bronze mirror depicting an image of the legendary white whale.
             Not unlike 3rd century Japanese mirrors.

Partial:      Bronze Mirror Fragment; It seems to be an old bronze mirror.

Locations:    Rowa's Jewel Box, K1 (bottom left), on the sandy floor.
             L3 (bottom left), on the central rock in between coral.
             E Maraui Hollow, D2 (top right), on the sandy floor.
             E3 (top left), in the middle of the rocky outcrop.

Catherine:    "Looks like you've found all the Bronze Mirror Fragments.  Let's
             put this thing back together and take a look...  It seems to be
             east Asian, and probably for religious services.  Judging by the
             shape, it could be of Japanese origin...  The engraved whale
             likeness resembles that of the legends.  It could even be a 3rd
             century ancient bronze mirror.

             But why would a Japanese artifact like this be here?  There are
             legends in Manaurai about sacred whales.  Creatures revered by
             the locals since days of old.  Blue whales, the largest creatures
             on earth appear in these legends from time to time.  Where were
             they seen?  Well, with a body as large as that, certainly not in
             the shallow sea that surrounds the islands.  Maybe you should
             look for an area facing the open sea."

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

3)  Pirate's Compass
********************

Description:  A message in ancient lettering says:  We're born of the sea, to
             it we return.  <<E-5, H-6, E-9>>

Partial:      Compass Piece; Mysterious old apparatus.

Locations:    Secret Lake, J9 (top right), in the sand near the central coral.
             B8 (top left), in the coral on the edge of the drop-off.
             Taganua Bay, H1 (bottom left), in the sand near the shallows.
             Lagoon M1, (bottom right), in the sand between two rocks.

Catherine:    "Looks like you've found all the Compass Pieces.  Let's put this
             thing back together and take a look...  It seems to be an old
             nautical compass, with Chinese-influuenced designs on it.  I'd
             say it's an 18th century European piece.  What's this?  There's
             a latin inscription and a map...  I'll have a read through.

                    - We're born of the sea -
                    - To it we return -
                    - Years filled by the tide -
                    - Of lands which we yearn -
                    - To Whale Island we head -
                    - To home we return -
                    - Triumphant are we -
                    - 3 stars, see them burn -

             It doesn't make much sense...  But the map, it looks like part of
             Manaurai, and the 3 stars marked on it correspond with <<E-5>>
             <<H-6>> <<E-9>> on our map!  What could they possibly represent?"

Unlocks:      Pirate Ship appears in one of the three locations on the compass
             once approximately 60% of the map has been uncovered.  At this
             point the email from Douglas below is sent.
             The specific location of the Ship varies each day but can be
             determined by surfacing when diving near the possible locations
             and looking around.  Once the Pirate Ship is entered (through a
             hole in the bow) it will carry you to the Ocean's Graveyard.

Douglas
Ribona:       Email:  Ghost Ship

             "Hey, how's it going?  Recently I've heard rumours that local
             fishermen in Paoul have seen a Ghost Ship!  It's strange that
             even in the 21st century, tales like this persist.  Anyhow, I
             did a bit of investigating and apparently the same story seems
             to appear every 40 years or so!  ...I wonder what it all means?
             It would make a great article, but I need some more material.
             If you have anything that might help me with the article, get in
             touch."

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

4)  Storyboard
**************

Description:  Carved wooden board with a story telling an old Paoul Republic
             story.  It shows a woman holding a fruit.

Partial:      Storyboard Piece; Has an engraving on it.

Locations:    Den of Spirits, H3 (bottom right), on the sand by the goby rock.
             Ancestral Reef, K7 (bottom left), on the sandy floor.
             Deep Valley, F6 (top right), in the northwest crevasse point.
             E1 (bottom right), on the rock between the seaweed.

Catherine:    "Looks like you've found all the Storyboard Pieces.  Let's put
             this thing back together and take a look...  It's a piece of
             traditional Paoul folk craft, that has been carved out of
             mahogany.  It shows a myth that was told across neighbouring
             islands.  When it comes to myths and legends, Douglas knows it
             all.  I wonder what kind of tale it tells.  I'll get in touch
             with him as soon as I can!"

Douglas:      Email: The Judgement Fruit

             "Catherine told me you found a storyboard.  It may be from a
             Paoul myth called "The Judgement Fruit".  It goes a bit like
             this...

             Once, on a small island, a mysterious tree grew.  Its fruit was
             highly sought after so the people worked to protect it.  One day,
             the king of a larger island invaded and killed all the people.
             He brought back the fruit to his queen, who devoured it greedily.
             Suddenly, it began to rain heavily.  It continued for over a
             year, and the island sank into the ocean.  It is said that the
             fruit was cursed...

             I guess it must have some kind of moral."

5)  Flame-patterned Vessel
**************************

Description:  Flames, or maybe water, adorn this item.  It dates back between
             2,000 and 10,000 years.

Partial:      Earthenware Piece;  An old piece of earthenware.

Location:     *Great Aqua Cave*
             Great Aqua Cave, G3 (bottom left), on the sandy floor
             Great Column, H3 (top right), on the floor near the column.
             Stalagtite Maze, G7 (bottom left), on the floor at the dead-end.
             Cascade Pool, E7 (bottom right), under the gap at the south end.

Catherine:    "Looks like you've found an Earthenware Piece.  Can't believe
             you found an item like this in a limestone cave!  You may have
             stumbled on a very significant object...  I'd better let Mr
             Tollman see it, he's well known and has friends in the right
             places, I'm sure he can put us in touch with someone who can
             help."

Norisuke
Takahashi:    Email: Unexplained Fragment

             "My name is Takahashi, and I work for the National Museum of
             Ethnology in Japan.  Mr Tollman was kind enough to inform me that
             fragments of an earthenware vessel with flame patterns had been
             found in Manaurai in an underwater cavern.

             Flame-patterned vessels were produced mainly in Japan some
             4000-5000 years ago.  I am intrigued that such an artifact was
             found in a cavern in the South Pacific.  This may be evidence of
             a mass-migration of the people of the Pacific Rim.  If you find
             any other fragments, please allow me to assist in their
             analysis."

Catherine:    "Looks like you've found all the Earthenware Pieces.  Let's put
             this thing back together and take a look...  I believe it's a
             piece from the Japanese Jomon period.  Often referred to as
             "flame-patterned", others call it "water flow" instead as it
             also resembles a surge of water.  Strange, considering fire and
             water are opposites.  Don't you think the description is a little
             ambiguous?

             Someone I know is particularly interested in this kind of find,
             I'll get in touch right away.  They're bound to like this."

Norisuke
Takahashi:    Email: An Important Find

             "This is Takahashi from the National Museum of Ethnology in
             Japan.  I hear you have gathered more fragments of the
             flame-patterned vessel.  Viewing the pictures of the fragments, I
             can tell this is an important find.  This vessel closely
             resembles those made in the south of the Chiba region of Japan.

             Many of the remains in Chiba show evidence of South Pacific
             influence.  I believe that 10,000 years ago, Chiba and Manaurai
             may have had some kind of interaction and I want to research this
             further.  As a token of my appreciation, I include a small gift."

Unlocks:      Twinkle suit (female) or Burning heat suit (male) when complete.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

6)  Sphere of Manaurai
**********************

Description:  Found in a limestone cave, this metallic orb has ancient writing
             on it, but its usage is unknown.

Location:     *Great Aqua Cave*
             White Room, E4 (bottom left), on the white mound in the centre.

Catherine:    "That's quite an interesting find.  This is likely to be the
             cave's most inner sanctum.  Perhaps this is the concealed area
             that is said to be home to the Mermaid's Treasure?"

Catherine:    "You've found the Sphere of Manaurai.  It appears to be a
             metallic, man-made object, yet remains unblemished even after
             all this time underwater.  It's so intricately detailed, and
             virtually flawless in shape.  The people of ancient Paoul didn't
             possess ironware or writing making the origin of this an even
             greater mystery.

             Did you know, objects of an undetermined origin like this are
             referred to as ooparts, or "Out Of Place Artifacts"?  It'll
             definitely make a worthy donation to a museum."

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

7)  Intriguing Idol
*******************

Description:  An unusually-shaped earthen figure of unknown origin.  It gives
             off a strange feeling of foreboding...

Partial:      Stautue Piece;  A slightly eerie-looking piece...

Location:     *Underwater Ruins of Marige Atoll*

             It's a very rare clay figure, the kind you don't often see.
             Swirling patterns have been carved into the entire body,
             possibly resembling tattoos which are commonplace in cultures
             around the Pacific rim.  The firgure is in the shape of a

8)  Nephrite Inscription
************************

Description:  Upon closer inspection of this nephrite-made item, the words seem
             to differ from top to bottom.

Partial:      Inscription Piece;  Ancient words have been carved onto this.

Location:     *Underwater Ruins of Marige Atoll*
             Central Hall, H5 (bottom left), in the middle of the hall floor.
             Inside the Ruins, E4 (bottom left), on the floor by the dead-end.
             H7 (bottom right) * 2

Catherine:   "Looks like you've found all the Inscription Pieces.  Let's put
            this thing back together and take a look...   Wow, this is an
            exquisite stone artifact!  It looks like it was from New Zealand
            originally...  and made from highly-polished greenstone.  There's
            something written on the surface, but something's out of place...
            I know someone who might be able to shed some light.  I'll contact
            an archaeology professor I know right away."

Prof.
Gregario
Muller:      Email: Secrets in the Inscription

            "Regarding the inscription in nephrite, I believe this to be a
            very significant find which could give a great boost to
            archaeology in the South Pacific.  Presently, I am still trying
            to decipher the inscription.  The process will be sped up, the
            more information we gather about stones from ancient ruins.
            Please wait a little longer for more news."

Notes:       All 6 inscriptions must be checked (E5, E6, G4, H7, I3, I5) and
            the resulting 6 emails read for the following conversations to
            occur once the item is complete:

Prof.
Gregario
Muller:      Email:  Deciphered Manaurai Script

            "Great news!  We succeeded in our analysis of the nephrite
            inscription, allowing us to decipher the script used in the ruins.
            It is written in two separate languages, but means the same in
            both.  Half is written in ancient Manaurai script.  The other half
            is in the carved symbols, or petroglyphs, of ancient Paoul, which
            we can already comprehend.  Using these petroglyphs, we can
            decipher the Manaurai script.  I'll make a report of the
            language's script and grammar, which will allow you to deciper it
            freely."

Catherine:   "Prof Nuller seems to have had some success with the writing.
            Well, no time like the present, let's get our heads round the
            huge amount of text the good professor sent us!  That wasn't so
            bad, was it.  Hopefully, now we'll be able to decipher the
            ancient text!"

Unlocks:     *You can now read Ancient Manaurai Language*
            This means the stone tablets in the ruins can now be deciphered:

            ...the bracelet passed to the white ones who obey the prince...
            ...the treasure passed to the black ones who obey the princess...
            ...seven tribes under the white king. The flood comes forth...
            ...the king stands firm against the God and his flood...
            ...eternal sleep covers the earth. The kingdoms fate is decided...
            ...he falls with his city. A new kingdom springs up in the west...

Catherine:    "Looks like you've found all the Fossil Segments.  Let's put
             this thing back together and take a look...  Anomalocaris was a
             fierce carnivorous marine creature that came into being over 500
             million years ago as a result of the Cambrian Explosion.  Its
             appearance is like nothing from any other era, and was laughed
             at when first shown to scientific society.  Hard to believe this
             once existed, isn't it?

             This truly is an unprecedented event, the first fossil of its
             type to be discovered in Manaurai.  We must take good care of
             this piece of history."

Nikolai
Komodo:       Email: Fossil Analysis Request

             "My name is Nikolai Komodo, and I am a curator at the Kayah
             National Musuem.  Ms. Catherine Sunday gave me your contact
             details.  The fossil which you recently found is most
             interesting.  It is a fossil of a very unusual creature that
             lived some 500 million years ago in the Cambrian Period.

             Remains of the same creature have been found in China, the USA
             and Australia but the fossil you found is different from those

             thing back together and take a look...  Phylum Cnidaria, class
             Anthozoa, coral remains a respected form of animal life.  When
             coral dies, it leaves behind hard skeletons which become part of
             coral reefs, or break down into sand or, in rarer cases, become

Catherine:    "Looks like you've found all the Golden Statue Pieces.  Let's put
             this thing back together and take a look...  This appears to be a
             statue of Amitabha Tathagata, a Buddha figure that's revered in
             Buddhism.  Actually, there are many types of these in Buddhism,
             Bodhisattva, is the shape of apprenticeship, and Myo-o is that of
             anger.  Buddha, the highest rank, indicates enlightenment.
             Amitabha Tathagata leads the dead to the Buddhist's paradise,
             and is a very high-ranking Buddha indeed!  So make sure you take
             good care of this piece, and never know, it might just answer

12) Jingdezhen Plate
********************

Description:  A piece of Jingdezhen pottery made in 16th or 17th century China.
             A highly sought after antique item.

Partial:      Plate Fragment;  It seems to be an old Chinese plate.

Location:     *Ocean's Graveyard
             The Sunken Ship, I4 (top right), on the floor by the ship's top.
             H3 (bottom right), on the sandy floor inside a broken funnel.
             Inside the wreck, H4 (top left), on the floor by the stairs.
             F5 (bottom right), on the floor next to the tyre.

Catherine:    "Looks like you've found all the Plate Fragments.  Let's put
             this thing back together and take a look...  This is a piece of
             world famous pottery from Jingdezhen, a city in the Jiangxi
             region of China.  The production of this pottery began hundreds
             of years ago and was prolific enough to be exported across
             Europe, Islamic countries and all over the world, meaning that
             prices and quality vary a lot.

             This item, however, looks like it could be a valuable piece.  A
             group of antique specialists recently came to the main island,
             so this could be a good opportunity to have it valued.  I'll
             contact Mr Tollman to make the necessary arrangements."

Alfred
Tollman:      Email:  W.F. Heaton's Collection

             "The results of the experts' appraisal are in, and they are most
             surprising!  Although the Jingdezhen Plate is not in good
             condition, it apparently has enrmous historical value.  In the
             16th century, the rich European collector, William Frederick
             Heaton, had this plate made for him by one of the most
             celebrated craftsmen of the Ming Period.

             Through various accidents of history, the plate passed through
             several nobles' hands and finally disappeared without trace.
             That is the plate you found.  You found something of real value.
             Please accept this as a reward."

Location:     Green Garden, F1 (bottom right), on the sand by the giant clam.

Douglas
Ribona:       Email: Find the Green Garden

             "Hey, I heard that Catherine isn't her usual self...  I might
             have an idea of what the problem is.  I've known her since she
             was a kid living in Paoul and I'm pretty sure she's dwelling on
             something in her past.

             It'd be best to ask her directly about her past.  But I doubt
             it'll be easy to get anything out of her.  You need some clue to
             get her to open up and talk.  Have you ever seen her pray facing
             the sea?  She always faces something - the Green Garden.  In the
             Green Garden you'll find a clue to opening up her heart..."

Catherine:    "It can't be!?  That belonged to my father!  You picked it up off
             the ocean floor, didn't you?  My father lost his life in the
             waters of Manaurai chasing a dream that he was never able to
             realise.  Since I can't keep anything hidden from you, let me
             tell you about my purpose...  As I said before, I was born here
             in Paoul.

             There's an ancient legend here, maybe you've heard of it?  It's
             about a huge white animal known as White Mother.  Said to be the
             origin of all life, its form is a giant, white whale and has
             been sighted by many since the days of old.  20 years ago, she
             revealed herself to my father...  who had chosen not to believe
             the stories surrounding the whale, concluding it was a UMA, or
             Unidentified Mysterious Animal.

             Bigger even than a blue whale, the planet's largest mammal, this
             whale was the most significant new species ever and so he began
             to pursue it for scientific investigation.  But in doing so, he
             pushed us away from normal society as he went against all that
             the residents of Paoul held dear.  We were shunned by them and
             left to stand alone.

             Then one day, he just vanished in the Manaurai Sea during an
             underwater survey.  The purpose I talk about is to do what my
             father couldn't...  to find the White Mother!  By doing so, I
             can let go of my regrets and...  restore my father's reputation.
             That's it, that's what I have to do.  Now if you don't mind, I'd
             like some time alone.  Thank you for listening to me..."

20) A Shark-tooth Necklace
**************************

Description:  Made with the teeth of the Great White shark, which is revered as
             the king of the ocean by natives here.

Location:     Knives Reef, D5 (top left) on the sand at the bottom of the reef.

Catherine:    "That looks like a pretty rare item you've found...  I think it's
             a shark-tooth necklace.  The shark is a revered animal in many
             South Pacific countries, and it's the same here in Paoul too.
             Their ferocity and toughness is often admired, especially by
             soldiers.

             The most noted example is the God of Violence and Death who had
             the form of Magu Tapah, a giant great white.  From the size of
             that tooth, it must have been huge, possibly even something
             nearing the size of Magu Tapah...  Perhaps it'll bring you luck

Alfred
Tollman:      Email:  White Dolphin

             "How are you?  I'm sure you are fully acclimatised to Manaurai by
             now.  I am writing because I heard a strange rumour the other
             day.  Apparently, there have been a number of sightings of a
             mysterious glowing white dolphin by Paoul fishermen who got lost
             in the area west of Rock Land.  If you're interested, perhaps you
             could investigate.  This is the area where the ruins were
             discovered.  Perhaps other secrets are waiting to be
             uncovered..."

Catherine:    "Looks like you've found an Old Bracelet.  It appears to have
             some kind of engraving on it.  Let me see...  The emblem is that
             of a seven-headed serpent...  Which suggests it was once owned
             by royalty.

             This reminds me of an old Paoul folk tale about a kingdom long
             ago that was threatened by a great flood and of a brave prince
             who could control dolphins using the power of a mysterious
             bracelet.  Anyway, he used it to avert the disaster and all was
             well.  The bracelet in the story was said to be very distinctive,
             an item truly fit for a king and possessing unique powers.
             Could this really be the same item?  It might be a good idea to
             wear it, for good luck."

Tollman:      Email:  Strange Ceremony

             "It seems you ar really throwing yourself into your work
             recently.  Remember to take care of your health - this is your
             most important resource!  That reminds me of a ceremony people
             in the Paoul Republic have taken part in since time immemorial.

             They pray to the storm god for good health and even for
             immortality before a rock shaped like a human face.  It's just a
             superstition, but take note of it anyway.  You never know when
             this information might come in useful."

Catherine:    "Like like you've found some Life Beads.  These items are known
             as "Comma-shaped beads".  In Japan, they were used as bodily
             accessories.  They existed her in Paoul too, but according to
             legend, they belonged to a medium who served Tso, Matah and
             Wengah, the Gods of storms, calm and war, who decorated her body
             with them.  Tso, Matah and Wengah were said to be the ruler of
             orcas, and the wearer of these comma-shaped beads would be
             granted their friendship and protection."
