It has now been twenty-one years since the world was first introduced to
"Dragon Quest." It is one of the most popular and persistent RPG series in
existence, spawning a myriad of sequels, remakes, and spin-offs over the years.
To me, all this attention is well-founded, as it is also (in my opinion) one of
the best (maybe THE best) RPG series for a console system.

However, because of Nintendo of America's tight reign on the content of its
games in the 80's and early 90's, much of what we saw in the U.S. was watered-
down or otherwise altered. For example, have you ever heard of a Puff-puff?
This mysterious massage technique is well-known to fans of recent "Dragon
Quest" games, including "Dragon Quest VIII," but you may not know that it
actually made its debut in the Japanese release of the very first game! (In the
American release, the character says instead that she has no tomatoes. For the
record, Nintendo, there is a huge difference between a Puff-puff and a lack of
tomatoes. :P)

This is where I enter the story. I have had a life-long interest in the
languages of the Far East, Japanese in particular. The characters used in
writing Japanese have always fascinated me, but the language itself, with its
complex honorific grammar system, strange usage of particles, and yes, even
those beautiful kanji characters, seemed all but impenetrable. But now, finally,
I've decided to buckle down and learn Japanese, using video games as a tool--
and sharing the fruits of my labors with you, O Lucky Readers! Therefore, I am
providing my translation of the original Japanese version of "Dragon Quest II"
so that you can see along with me where it differs from the American version.
(And it just seemed like a good idea, since no one else had done it yet!)

But more than just that, I am also asking for your help, O Knowledgeable
Readers. If you are reading this, and you know Japanese (or, at the very least,
you know it better than I do), and you find a mistake, please do not hesitate
to send me an email so that I may correct it. If I've written a word in kanji
that should be left in kana (or vice versa), let me know; if I've used the
wrong kanji somewhere, let me know. You will be credited in the next release.

As one final note, let me point out that this is not a walkthrough. It is
simply the script, plus a mini-guide to get you playing in Japanese if you wish.

Just a little trivia:
・The Japanese release used a password system of up to fifty-two characters to
save progress. The battery-packed RAM method was added to the American release.
・Introduced the following elements to the series: a party of playable
characters, parties of enemy monsters, and the limitation of eight items per
character.
・Although the Puff-puff makes an appearance in most games of the series, it
appears to be absent from this one.

Well, that's enough for this long introduction, O Intrepid Readers. It is my
sincere hope that you enjoy this guide, and perhaps even find it useful!

In this section, I have typed up the game text using the following format.
Firstly, the game text is reproduced exactly as it appears in the game (barring
the occassional typo). Next, the text is presented using the kanji that I
believe are correct. Lastly, I present my translation of the original text into
English. This translation is as accurate as possible to the best of my
knowledge, but some passages were altered slightly to make better-sounding
English. To make mistakes easier to spot, I am marking passages that I am
unsure of with "(?)" although in all probability there are also other errors
that I don't realize I have made. Also, I have not seen 100% of the game text.
If you know of anything that is missing, please let me know and I will try to
fill in the empty spots sometime in the future.

I have marked the beginning of each "Act," and each major and minor section,
with a distinctive header to aid in browsing. Likewise, I have marked each
separate event or conversation with "★" to make it stand out. Where the
player's name appears in the text I have used the name "Ｘ." (In case you're
curious, this game doesn't allow for Roman letters to be used in the
character's name, so what I actually used was "えっくす," pronounced
"Ekkusu"...which is simply the Japanese pronunciation of the letter "X.") The
names of the other two party members are selected by the game itself, so I
simply used what I got: "トンヌラ" (Tonnura) for the Prince and "プリン"
(Purin) for the Princess (oddly enough, "purin" is the Japanese word for
"pudding").

The text in this file is from the Famicom version of the game, but the MSX and
MSX2 versions should contain the exact same text throughout. I have tried, as
much as possible, to arrange the text in the order it would be seen in actual
gameplay, but for organization's sake some of the ordering may have been
changed.

As a supplement to this file for those who actually want to play the game in
Japanese, I have also made maps of the entire game with the Japanese names of
items and locations (with translations, of course) available on GameFAQs.com.
These can also be used with the U.S. version, as only the names will be
significantly different.

(NOTE: This is a reference back to the original Dragon Quest. The wounded
soldier in the Ladatorm Inn says something very similar to this if you try to

Starting the game is easy, as the title screen options are in English! :-D
Simply use the Up/Down Directions to choose "Start" or "Continue," and use the
Left/Right Directions to choose a Message Speed of "Slow," "Normal," or "Fast."

If you choose "Start," you will be confronted with the message "なまえを　いれ
てください"--"Please Enter Name." You may enter up to four characters, and you
can choose from the fifty Japanese hiragana, along with the ゛ ("nigori," or
"dakuten") and ゜ ("maru") diacritic marks, which each take up a full space
rather than combining with the kana. You cannot enter a space in your name. Two
commands are available on the bottom row. These are もどる ("Back") and おわり
("End").

If you choose "Continue," you are presented with the message "ふっかつの　じゅ
もんを　いれてください"--"Please Enter Spell of Restoration." This is the
password system for the game. The Spell of Restoration consists of up to fifty-
two hiragana (although the shortest possible is eighteen, if you have no
companions and no items), chosen from the sixty-four choices available on this
screen. In the right column are four commands. They are けずる ("Erase"--
deletes the character that the cursor is on), もどる ("Back"), すすむ
("Advance"), and おわり ("End"). If you make a mistake, you will be given the
message "じゅもんを　ちがいます"--"Spell Is Wrong," and you will have to
correct your error.

The "Ｍ" stands for "Monshou," which is Japanese for "Crest." As you collect
the five Crests that you need to call Rubiss, they will appear here.

When you choose "Equipment," you must first choose a character, and then an
item to equip for "ぶき"--"Weapon," "よろい"--"Armor," "たて"--"Shield," and
"かぶと"--"Helmet." You can also choose "なにももたない"--"Hold Nothing" for
any of these categories to go without.

Upon choosing "Tool," you also must first choose a character. After choosing a
character and an item, the following window appears:

From here, selecting "Use" will use the item (you may have to choose another
character to use it on: "だれに"--"Whom?"). Selecting "Give" will give the item
to another character (after selecting whom), and selecting "Throw" will
immediately discard the item.

Choosing "Spell" will ask you to select a spellcaster and then will give a list
of available options. If the spell needs a target, you will be asked "だれに"--
"Whom?" just as you are with the "Tool" command.

The remaining options are simple. Choosing "Speak" will make the character
speak in the direction he is facing, and "Examine" will perform the action
immediately for the space the lead character is standing on. It is also used to
pick up treasure chests.

You will also need to visit the Churches from time to time for healing purposes.
When you speak to the priest, he will ask if you need any assistance. The three
options are:

When you enter a battle, you will see three windows. On the top is the mini-
status window, the same one that shows up on the bottom when you enter the
command window in walkabout mode. On the lower-right is a list of the enemies
you face and how they are grouped. The lower-left contains your battle commands,
and appears as follows:

The commands are slightly different for the two magic users, with "Escape"
being replaced with "じゅもん"--"Spell." Also, if the leader is incapacitated,
the "Defense" option will become "Escape" for the first spellcaster.

For the most part, if you are familiar with this game you should be able to
figure out what is happening in battle, but there are a couple of things that
you should watch for in the text window. If you cast a spell, you do not want
to see the message "＿＿には　じゅもんが　きかなかった！", as this means the
spell did not work on that particular monster. Of course, when the enemy casts
a spell, this *is* what you want to see, as anything else is a hit.

I'm not going to go into a full list of all battle dialogue; this should be
enough to get you by. As for the shops and inns, it should be enough for you to
know that "はい" is "Yes" and  "いいえ" is "No"; using the following lists you

This section concerns the "Spell of Restoration" system of the game. Being a
game that uses a password save feature means that it is relatively easy to pick
up the game from any point, and even to play under special circumstances using
passwords that may have been hard-coded into the game. Here are several
interesting "urawaza," as they are called, that I have come across.

・There are two versions of this password, the first of which only works on an
MSX system because it includes an item in the Princess's inventory which does
not exist in the Famicom version of the game: the Dangerous Swimsuit! The
second version does not include the Swimsuit and works on all three versions.
The hero's name is Hanimaru, just as in a password for Dragon Quest that places
the player near the end of the game. On a side note, the Prince of Samaltria is
named "Conan," heheh. :-P

・Devised fancy new section headers, hopefully making the file easier to browse.
・Changed the title to "Game Script and Mini Playing Guide," since this really
is a little bit more than just the script.
・Changed the search codes in the Table of Contents.
・"Version History" section has grown up quite a bit--moved it to the end.
・Added the elusive Mysterious Hat to the "Items" section. Although I'm not
convinced it can be legally obtained through normal play, it obviously exists
within the game.
・Also added the Dangerous Swimsuit to the "Items" section. I don't know much
about it (such as how to get it) since it is only in the MSX versions, but it
definitely does exist.
・Moved "Command Windows" section to follow the "Transcription."
・Added the new "Special Passwords" section, including a password given to me
by CygnusZ!
・Proofread and cleaned up translation.
・Made other miscellaneous alterations in some sections.
・Revised maps again (last time, I promise!), adding treasure data, attempting
to increase legibility, and shrinking larger maps to fit on the screen with
less scrolling, as well as adding a coordinate system to the "World" map.

・Had an issue with my Final Fantasy maps, so for consistency I relabelled
these as well.
・Corrected the name of the "Staff of the Underworld" to "Thunder Staff."
・Added equippability chart to "Equipment" section.
・Decided to go with "Sidoh" as the name of the final boss--I just thought that
maybe it looks better, heh.

・Added a kind of flow chart to guide the reader through Yes/No questions in
the dialogue (let me know how legible it is).
・Added a bit of trivia about the game to the Foreword.
・Removed the equippability chart--it's in other FAQs already, and it really
has nothing to do with the translation.
・Also did other itty-bitty teeny-tiny things.

Famicom remake.
