==Introduction==
In 1991 WestOne developed and Sega published an arcade beat 'em up title
called Riot City. The rights to the game were thus split between the two
companies. Sega would go on to publish Streets of Rage on their Sega
Genesis later that year, while WestOne sought to publish their title on the
Turbo CD.
The problem was that Sega owned the rights to the characters in the game. In
order to circumvent this, WestOne changed the sprites of the characters and
some of the backgrounds, while retaining the same game engine. This new game
was dubbed Riot Zone and published by Hudson for their Turbo CD in 1992.
Riot Zone was one of the fifty or so titles for the Turbo CD to get an
American release. It has since been re-released on the Virtual Console in all
three regions. The game has a pretty bad reputation stemming from the fact
that it is only single-player. This occurs despite the fact that there are two
playable characters who vow to "go down fighting... together" in the opening
cutscene.
==Walkthrough==
Pick either Hawk or Tony to begin. Hawk is the quicker fighter with weaker
attacks, while Tony is the slower fighter who hits harder. Each stage is much
the same; simply walk from left to right, fight all the enemies when the screen
won't scroll, and then walk some more when they are defeated until you fight a
boss.
As such this walkthrough will list the enemies you will encounter on each
screen, with a more detailed boss description where appropriate. General
information on the regular enemies is provided in the first stage they appear
in.
Do note that there will never be any more than three enemies on the screen
at a single time. If a screen below lists more than three enemies, it means
that additional foes will appear as you defeat the ones who are initially
present.

Screen 16 - Mr. Lee x1
Screen 17 - Mr. Lee x1, Miss Chan x1
Bonnie, Charlie, Johnny, Paula, Slim, and Thin Liz are all pretty much
the same. These are your basic style of opponent encountered in every
beat 'em up. Mostly they will hover just out of range and try to sneak in
for a quick kick or punch when there's an opening on you. Just walk right
up and start wailing on them.
Fats, King Kool, and Pretty Boy are your "fat guy" style of enemy. They fight
about the same as the other enemies here, although they seem to be a little
slower and hit ever so slightly harder. Either walk up on them or jump kick
them for a quick takedown.
=--Boss Encounter: Mr. Lee and Miss Chan--=
Initially you'll just be facing Mr. Lee. He fights very cautiously and will
try to back away from you. Jump kick him repeatedly. You want to keep the
pressure on him, although he seems pretty quick on the ground so try to keep
the hits high. When you deplete his first life bar he will flee.
You'll chase him down to the bottom floor and face both Lee and Miss Chan.
Lee fights the same, while Chan will be much more aggressive. Focus on Chan,
only hitting at Lee if he gets bold and tries to move on you. Once you beat
Chan, return to Lee as you did before.
The duo does possess a combo attack with a couple of variations. If Chan and
Lee are near each other, Chan will sometimes leap into the air, land on Lee,
and then be hurled at you, either directly or in an arching leap. If you
keep the duo split up, however, they will be unable to perform these attacks.

A short scene will play when you defeat Mr. Lee and Miss Chan and you will
move on to the next stage.

Screen 02 - Johnny x1, Little Sam x1
Screem 03 - Charlie x1, Jim Bob x1, Johnny x1
Screen 04 - Lucky Luke x1
Screen 05 - Charlie x1, Clyde x1, Fast Eddy x1, Lucky Luke x1
Screen 06 - Charlie x1, Johnny x1, Slash x1
Screen 07 - Fast Eddy x1
Screen 08 - Clyde x1, Fast Eddy x1, Johnny x1, Slim x1
Screen 09 - Charlie x1, Slim x1
Screen 10 - Lucky Luke x1
Screen 11 - Jim Bob x1, Johnny x1, Lucky Luke x1
Screen 12 - Shauna x1
Jim Bob, Litle Sam, and Clyde are the "old man" style enemies. These ones
have canes and are pretty aggressive, although this actually tends to make
them less dangerous as they will callously walk at your fists.
Fast Eddy, Lucky Luke, and Slash are the fast style enemies. These guys have
basic attacks, but they will almost always come at you with these soccer
slide tackles. Time your jumps and jump kick them as they come at you to
avoid being hit.
=--Boss Encounter: Shauna--=
Shauna is a dominatrix with a riding crop. Enemies like this seem to come
up a lot in these games. The riding crop gives her more range than other foes
you've encountered. The safe way to deal with this is to hold back and jump
kick her. Any time she is knocked down she will pause briefly before getting
back up and striking. Don't rush in when she's down, just hang back and jump
kick her when she tries to strike.

Another scene with a wanted poster will play and you'll be off to the next
stage.
Screen 01 - Big Al x1, Floyd x1, Jim Bob x1, Little Sam x1, Ricky x1
Screen 02 - Clyde x1, Little Sam x1, Ricky x1
Screen 03 - Clyde x1, Floyd x1
Screen 04 - Carlo x1, Ripper x1
Screen 05 - Big Al x1, Carlo x1, Clyde x1, Jack x1, Jim Bob x1
Screen 06 - Big Al x1, Carlo x4, Clyde x1, Floyd x3, Jack x1, Jim Bob x4,
Little Sam x1, Ricky x3, Ripper x5
Screen 07 - Little Same x1, Ricky x1, Ripper x1
Screen 08 - Clyde x1, Floyd x1, Jack x1, Jim Bob x1, Ricky x1
Screen 09 - Floyd x1, Jack x1, Ripper x1
Screen 10 - Carlo x1, Clyde x1
Screen 11 - Little Sam x2
Screen 12 - Lance x1
Big Al, Floyd, and Ricky are a strange crew. They seem to be the Asian
style enemy that populates these games based on their clothes, although
they are African-American. They mostly fight by lining up with you and
then charging across the screen quickly where you were standing when they
began. Either move out of the way or time your strikes to catch them as
soon as they get in melee range.
Carlo, Ripper, and Jack are the ninja enemies of Riot Zone. They're armed
with kunai daggers, although they mostly use these to do this jumping
overhand strike. Be aggressive with these guys and move up on them as they
can jump quite far to get to you.
=--Boss Encounter: Lance--=
Lance has a sampled voice that will welcome you right before blades come
out of his arms and spikes jut out of his back. Lance will counter any
combo you try to do on him by extending his spikes, so like the last boss
you just need to hang back and jump kick him when he gets up.
Just be sure not to hang too far back. If you are too far away, Lance will
spin into a ball and launch himself across the room at you. You want to
stand just out of melee range, wait for him to get up, and then jump kick
him to the face. This takes a while, but it will whittle him down.

Screen 16 - Big Al x1, Bruiser x1, Bruiser Jr. x1, Cruiser x1, Paula x1
Screen 17 - Big Al x1, Bonnie x2, Bruiser x1, Bruiser Jr. x1, Cruiser x1,
Floyd x1, Ricky x1
Screen 18 - Fuji x1
Bruiser, Bruiser Jr., and Cruiser are the grappler style enemies. It's odd
it took so long into the game to face them, but they're finally here. Keep
them at range and try not to laugh at their big, goofy smile.
=--Boss Encounter: Fuji--=
Fuji is a fan of swinging strikes that hit all around him and overhead
hammer fists. The swinging strike makes it hard to combo him, so again
your best bet is to just jump kick him. It is easier to combo on him than
the last two bosses, but he'll do the swinging hit sporadically so you'll
tend to take some unnecessary damage.

Jack x1, Lucky Luke x1, Ripper x1, Slash x1
Screen 11 - Carlo x1, Cruiser x1, Lucky Luke x1
Screen 12 - Quinn x1, Tora x1
=--Boss Encounter: Quinn and Tora--=
Quinn's primary move is to do this elbow jab counterattack. He's actually
much simpler than any of the other bosses. You can either combo him from
an angle or just jump kick him to death, either way works.
Once Quinn goes down the samurai armor in the background will come to life
and you'll face Tora. Tora's sword has a huge range, making it difficult to
even get near him. He also utilizes this charging sword thrust attack and
can shoot fire from his hands.
If Tora goes to shoot a fireball or prepares to charge you can sneak a
quick hit in if you're fast enough. Zig zag up and down, keeping him at
sword's distance from you. Avoid his slashes and when he tries one of his
charge attacks get a strike in. Just keep at it and the samurai will fall.
