O--|__________________/ The Ninja Gaiden Series
'
The Ninja Gaiden series needs little introduction, although this particular
entry might require some. Ninja Gaiden was originally released on the NES in
December of 1988 and began the series that continues to this day. An enhanced
port of that title was later released on the Super Nintendo in 1995, along
with the first two sequels, as part of Ninja Gaiden Trilogy. Between these two
releases was a Japanese-only remake of the game for the TurboGrafx-16 (or PC
Engine) that was released in 1992.
This guide covers that version of the game. The TurboGrafx port features redone
backgrounds and sprites, as well as slight variations in timing and enemy
placement within the game's levels. In general things occur more quickly in the
TurboGrafx port, but this does not make all of the levels harder as one might
guess (some are significantly easier, such as Act 6-2). Also of interest is
that although this was a Japanese-only release, you can change the language of
the cutscenes between Japanese, English, and Chinese by holding buttons one and
two on the title screen and cycling through them by pressing select.
You will find a full walkthrough in this guide. This is followed by the English
game script, for those interested in seeing some of the differences in the
dialogue between this and the NES version. For example, Ken Hayabusa has been
renamed Joe Hayabusa in this port.
In addition to the code for changing the in-game langauge, you can also hold
down, left, select, button one, and button two on the title screen to have each
continue grant you five lives instead of two.

'
***********************
* Act 1-1 * Galesburg *
***********************
Allowing you to get the hang of the controls, Act 1-1 is simply a straight
stretch of street. There are no tricky jumps and the enemies are the easiest
the game has to offer. Just keep going right until you reach Jay's Bar (or
simply J's Bar, as it appears here).
***********************
* Act 1-2 * Jay's Bar *
***********************
() Barbarian
Known as the Executioner of South America, Barbarian is the first boss. He is
supposed to be a member of the Malice Four, but recruiting must have been down
as all he does is take about four steps forward and slash at the air three
times. You can dash in and slash him as he moves forward, then dash back as he
prepares to slash, then repeat. However you will likely have the health to just
stand in front of him and slash away, taking the damage he deals as you will
deal far more to him.
*********************
* Act 2-1 * Outpost *
*********************
The initial area is a little tougher than last level, introducing some pits
you can fall into, but is still very straightforward. Continue to the right
until you reach a ladder along a wall and a pit at the end. Climb up this and
onto the next screen.
Climb to near the top, jump to the left onto the platform, then over to the
top of the pillar. Turn left and duck to slash at the bat that appears behind
you. Jump to the right and repeat this process again at the next set of ladder
holds. Continue to the right until you come to another ladder leading up and
off the screen over a pit. Climb it to continue to the next leg of the act.
Jump left, then leap to the middle area at the right. Jump on the hovering
platform, and then up to the ladder and climb to the next screen.
Go left until you come to the first pit. Wait for the enemy there to reach the
edge and turn back left before jumping across. As soon as you land a dog will
appear, so be prepared to leap over it. Run left to the exit.
**************************
* Act 2-2 * Death Valley *
**************************
Death Valley looks a lot prettier on the TurboGrafx than it did on the NES. The
footholds are also bigger than before, but now the enemies seem to move faster
than they did on the original. The first area is pretty simple, just, as a
general rule, always wait for enemies near pit edges to move back away from
the edge before leaping across. Also be aware that at the end of this area, you
must climb down the ladder to the next area. If you fall, you will die.
In the next area leap from pillar to pillar. On the third pillar a soldier will
leap at you. Jump up and hit him before he knocks you to the abyss below. The
machine gun soldier a little further on is more difficult to deal with unless
you have a good ninpo, but can be hit if you land perfectly on the right edge
as he is on the left. Making this more annoying, another soldier will leap at
you when you land. Beyond this point is only one more real challenge, an
enemy wandering on the final platform. As before, just wait for him to turn and
start moving back to the left before jumping to his platform.
The third area is more like the first, but it introduces these annoying wizard
guys that throw scythes. They will hang out at the edges and attack, forcing
you to attack and jump at the same time. Ninpo is the prefered form of attack,
allowing you to avoid the potential for being dropped off a cliff. Just pay
close attention to what is on each pillar or ledge before you jump to it and
you should make it through.
***************************
* Act 2-3 * Amura's Altar *
***************************
() Bomberhead
A gangster from New York, known there as the "Lord of Evil," Bomberhead is the
second member of the Malice Four you will face. Bomberhead fights a lot like
Barbarian, although he swings his kama higher than Barbarian swung his axe,
making him a lot easier. Use the same general tactics to lower the Malice Four
numbers by half.
**************************
* Act 3-1 * Crystal Lake *
**************************
As anyone who played Shinobi on the Playstation 2 can tell you, ninjas cannot
swim. As such, the water might as well be a bottomless pit. With that in mind,
there are no real surprises for you in this area. The big addition to this
area are the eagles. These annoying enemies will fly back and forth, following
you and trying to ram into you and knock you into the drink. There are two ways
of dealing with them. You can either run fast and "scroll" them out of the
screen and out of existence, or you can crouch wherever you are when one
appears and wait for it to come at you, then strike it as it does. The latter
way is the safer method, but requires more patience.
******************************
* Act 3-2 * Lizard Mountains *
******************************
The second area is like the first, only with more pits. There is a new enemy
here, a crouching soldier with a rocket launcher, but they should pose no real
new threat to you. At the very end of the area you need to jump to a lower
area with a machete-wielder as a tiger runs at you from behind and an eagle
flies from the front. Jump the tiger, letting it run under you, then duck and
kill the eagle. By then, the guy below is hopefully heading to the right, so
jump down and kill him. Enter the cave to face that statue-stealing thief.
*************************
* Act 3-3 * Yomi's Cave *
*************************
() Basaquer
Chinese assassin and a former member of the Five Ranges of Doom, Basaquer is
the third member of the Malice Four you will face. He leaps from one edge of
the screen to the other, throwing knives at you each time he lands. If you can
hit him before he touches down, he will not throw any knives. If you have the
throwing star ninpo, you can just hit him each time he is about to land to
render him powerless. If not, pick one side and stay there. Either slash or
jump the knives Basaquer throws from the opposite side, then slash him as he
is about to touch down on your end.
***********************************
* Act 4-1 * South American Amazon *
***********************************
After Foster's brief (who looks totally different here than he does in either
Ninja Gaiden I or III on the NES), you set down in the jungle. This place
throws everything you have seen thus far at you. If you have gone thus far
without using ninpo, you will not make it through here without it, and if you
can, why are you reading this guide?
As you climb up the wall to the second area (or third, if you count the one
screen where all you do is climb), let that damn eagle hit you before you leap
to the wooden platform. When you do, crouch and kill it before moving on to a
short cutscene of Jacquio's fortress.
********************************
* Act 4-2 * Bazlisk Mine Field *
********************************
This area is easier than the first and introduces some new enemies. The pumpkin
head creatures are similar to the machete-wielders, but they throw swords as
well. There are also these armored enemies with scythes that, aside from
looking kinda cool, do little else but walk about. Ninja enemies will also make
an appearace. These will chase you until you kill them or scroll them off the
screen. There is a full life power-up at the end of the bridge in the that has
a large opening in the mine. The beginning of this bridge also marks what is
about the halfway point of the act.
*************************************************
* Act 4-3 * Temple of Darkness - Hall of Demons *
*************************************************
Climb up the first area and make your way to the right through the second area.
Neither area really offers anything new to you.
Area three has two new enemies that pose a major threat. The first are these
white martial artist that leap and performing spinning kicks. Like the ninjas
they will chase you until killed. The other new enemy are these strange looking
statuesque turrents that sit in one spot and fire projectiles periodically.
Area four seems forbodding at first, but is actually only about four screens
long. The final jump also looks like a potential for deception, but really is
quite safe. More of a threat is the bat that comes at you from behind when you
jump onto the brown platform above the pit.
**************************************************
* Act 4-4 * Temple of Darkness - Kelbeross Layer *
**************************************************
() Kelberosses
I hate these stupid things. Your best bet is to hang out under the pillar near
the door, ducking the fireballs they shoot and waiting for one of them to hop
to you. They will land on the pillar each time, so they won't touch you. Slash
the one nearby as it passes. which one you can hurt changes every so often, so
if your slashes aren't working just wait for the vulnerable one to switch or
for the other one to come to you.
********************************
* Act 5-1 * Prison of the Dead *
********************************
After finally seeing Jacquio, or "Devildoer" in this version of the game, you
find yourself in the Prison of the Dead. The background is pretty cool, but
thankfully this act really doesn't throw anything too new at you. There are a
few new enemies, but none of them are all that unique.
********************
* Act 5-2 * Cliffs *
********************
This is a lot like the mountain level from Ninja Gaiden II. The first area is
fairly standard, although a flea man-type enemy waits at the last ledge that
has the potential to send you off the side of the mountain.
Area two is about the same length and should be easier for you. There is an
eagle towards the end that can be a problem, but if you scroll all the way to
the right he will likely fly off the edge of the screen and cease to exist.
Area three is just a huge enemy fest. The torch hanging to the right and above
the upper-first row of the statue turrent things has a shield that can be
indispensible. If you cannot get it, you either need to jump their shots as
you move in on them or make extensive use of your ninpo.
Area four has an extremely annoying jump a couple of screens in. You need to
leap to the upper right wall, then jump back left and fall until you can catch
the bottom corner of the left block. From here you need to leap to the lower
platform below and ways in to the right. While you do this, one of those damn
eagles will try to knock you to your death. There's no easy way to do this,
but it is possible to accomplish. In general, only jump if the eagle is moving
to the left and is already behind you. Thankfully this jump is the last
obstacle of this section of the stage.
***********************************
* Act 5-3 * East Tower Outer Wall *
***********************************
Area one is fairly uneventful, but area two introduces guys on rocket packs
that will fly overhead and drop bombs at you as they pass. Avoiding the high
fliers is easiest, although some of the lower flying ones can be easily dealt
with as they pass.
Area three is pretty straightforward as well. If you are interested, the path
leading back to the beginning at the top of the screen has a full life item in
the torch at the end. If you don't need this, by all means skip it and keep
climbing up.
Area four has a lot of nasty jumps. It's clear what to do on all of them, just
accomplishing it with the bats, eagles, and soldiers all around can be tough.
Area five is very short and will offer a reprieve from those crazy jumps. Area
six that follows is also short and marks the last area with enemies before the
boss. The items you see hanging around it that look inviting are not, so do not
even bother trying to get them. They are not worth it!
Area seven is a balcony with no enemies. Run all the way right to face the man
who murdered Ryu's father, Ken Hayabusa.
*******************************
* Act 5-4 * Nails of Lukifell *
*******************************
() Bloody Malth
Wielding the "Iron Mask of Blood" and "Shield of Death," this former ninja is
the leader of the Malice Four. He's called Bloody Master in this port, but
he's still a total pushover. Malth's only attack is to call down a lightning
bolt to his hand and throw it at you. He takes a while to charge this up, so
you can get several hits in before he can hit you. If you have at least half
your health you can just spam the attack and not even dodge and still beat him
before he can kill you. If not, jump on the pillar at the right when he starts
to charge and jump the attack, then move in and hit him two times, and repeat.
**************************
* Act 6-1 * Death Bridge *
**************************
We're finally at the last level. Run left across the balcony and back into the
temple to make your way to the final battle. There are a fair amount of foes
blocking the way, but no pits yet.
*******************************************************
* Act 6-2 * Temple of Darkness - Hall of the Brahmans *
*******************************************************
The dreaded Act 6-2. The TurboGrafx version is a little easier than it was on
the NES interestingly enough thanks to some differences in timing and distance.
The first area throws nothing more challenging than usual at you and should
offer light resistance by this point. Areas two and the small area three are
also very light fare.
Area four is where things start getting hard. You need to kill the enemies as
they appear here. If you try to outrun them, it will not work. You need a
projectile ninpo. If you die, climb back down to area two and get one. Kill
everything as you approach and this will not be as bad as it seems.
Area five is just enemy heavy. Do not try to run past them, kill whatever is
in your line of travel. Do not go out of your way to kill things, but do not
take chances by trying to just dodge enemies and not kill them. If you can
make it through here you will reach the next act.
****************************************************
* Act 6-3 * Temple of Darkness - Hall of Judgement *
****************************************************
If you keep a projectile ninpo, areas one, two, and three will not pose a very
serious threat to you. If you lose it, however, area three can be a little
intimidating since there are several places where enemies sit on small ledges
you need to jump to. There are a couple of them hidden in torches in this area,
so you can get it back to make your way through this "Hall of Judgement."
At the beginning of area four you need to jump and quickly push back to the
right to climb over the lip of the green pillar you come up on. Most of you
probably have this mastered by now, but if not this is the spot where you have
to do it to keep going. After that, only a handful of enemies stand between
you and the final three bosses. If you lose on any of the final three bosses
you go back to the beginning of Act 6-2, so be careful.
**************************
* Act 6-4 * Final Battle *
**************************
() Masked Devil
Masked Devil just kinda walks around on the bottom floor. Your target is the
green orb in the center of the room that shoots the orange projectiles out.
Jump from blue pillar to blue pillar to avoid the Devil and slash the green
orb whenever you are close to it. The projectiles the orb shoots will hover
around Devil and can be destroyed, but it's just as easy to just avoid him by
clinging high on the walls, then dropping down as he passes to slash at the
orb some more.
() Jacquio
The "Guardia de Mieux," Jacquio, is the architect behind the plot to ressurect
Jashin. Jacquio flies back and forth along the top of the screen and will
periodically shoot two fireballs down at you that will try to follow you. There
is a significant delay between when he does the summoning motion and these
things appear, making timing a little odd. You can destroy these fireballs, but
as with the Masked Devil it is easier to just dodge them, then jump up and
slash Jacquio as he passes.
() Jashin
An ancient god of destruction sealed away by the Hayabusa Clan. Jashin looks a
lot cooler here than he did on either the NES or Super Nintendo. Jashin shoots
these blue balls at you for most of the battle that bounce around. They're
not too tough to dodge. You will hit Jashin for some time before his life bar
actually starts to go down, so don't panic when it looks like your attacks are
having no effect on the demon. Once his head falls off your attacks will start
to lower his life bar. His attacks do not change, although he will launch the
balls at you more quickly. Just keep working on him and he will go down like
the others before him. Once his body begins to fade from existence, you have
completed Ninja Ryukenden for the TurboGrafx.

Prologue
It's been said that father was killed in a fight. But why?
I know nothing about it!
The day after father's death, in his room, I found a note for me.
"Ryu, I have to go. Once I leave I can never come back...
"Take our ancestral Hayabusa's Dragon Sword and go to America to the
archaeologist, Mr Walter Smith."
"Ryu, be strong and live on."
"Father, I swear I will revenge your death!"
Post-Act I
Ryu: "Who is that? Why is he following me?
"Who's there?"
"Oh, it's just a girl. Get lost!"
Irene: "Hhm, I will but..."
Ryu: "What...?!"
Pre-Act II
Ryu: "Oh, where am I?
"I'm trapped and powerless."
"Who are you?!"
Irene: "Shhh! Keep quiet... I need your help."
"Take this and escape right away!"
Ryu: "What is this, a statue?"
Irene: "I've got no time to explain. Hurry up!"
Ryu: "Wait, who are you?"
"Don't you want to kill me?"
Irene: "Be careful, somebody's coming!"
Post-Act II
What is this strange looking statue? And who is that girl?
My father's friend Mr. Smith must have the answers!
Pre-Act III
Smith: "Who is it?"
Ryu: "You must be Mr. Walter Smith. I am Ryu Hayabusa."
Smith: "Oh! That sword... So you are the son of Joe Hayabusa."
Ryu: "This is my father's letter telling me to see you."
Smith: "Last letter? So it has already started."
Ryu: "What do you mean?"
Smith: "Joe and I had been investigating an old Amazon ruin."
"In the ruin we found two statues and a stone tablet recording their
secret. Moreover..."
Ryu: "Wait a minute. Do you mean this statue?"
Smith: "Yes, that's one! I thought it had been stolen."
"The Demon of these statues has enough power to destroy the entire
world.
"The Demon came to bring death to the earth. But a Ninja came to stop
him."
"The Ninja used the power of the Dragon Sword to defeat the Demon."
"But since the Demon was immortal, the Ninja could not kill him."
"He broke the Demon's power and confined it in the Light & Shadow
Statues while his body was held in a temple."
"This one must be the Shadow Statue!"
Basaquer: "I've got the Shadow Statue now! Ha ha ha!"
Ryu: "Oh no!"
Smith: "You must get it back, Ryu!"
Post-Act III
Ryu: I've got the Shadow Statue. I must hurry back!
"Mr. Smith!"
Smith: "Ryu... the Light Statue was stolen..."
Ryu: "The Light Statue?"
Smith: "To prevent the statues from combining into one, Joe and I each held
one."
"The Demon is awaking after 700 years' slumber. We must stop him!"
"Only the Dragon Ninja can do it!"
Ryu: "Mr. Smith, Mr. Smith!"
"..."
FBI Men: "Come with us."
Pre-Act IV
Foster: "Welcome, Ryu Hayabusa. I'm sorry to have startled you."
"This is the CIA base. My name is Foster."
Ryu: "What do you want with me?"
Foster: Let's get right to the point..."
Ryu: "Wait, tell me why you killed Mr. Smith."
Foster: "We didn't kill him, let me tell you the story."
"It seems an ancient ruin was found deep in the Amazon Jungle."
"The explorer, Mr. Smith, was studying the ruins."
"But, he suddenly sealed the temple. No one has set foot there since."
"But, later on, the temple was possessed by the Guardia Da Max."
"He called himself the 'Devildoer'. According to our investigation...
"The temple was used to imprison the Demon's body."
"Moreover, the statue you have is the only key to unlock the magic
spell."
"Dr. Smith probably knew that, so the Devildoer..."
"killed him."
Ryu: "..."
Foster: "The last words read: The lunar eclipse will crumble the Light &
Shadow Statues and the King of Darkness will reign terror."
"Anyone who brings the Demon back to life will gain power to dominate
the world."
Ryu: "Incredible!"
Foster: "The girl who shot you in the bar was a spy we sent."
"Go to the temple and bring back the Light Statue."
"Of course, you won't work for nothing. I guarantee you a handsome
reward."
Ryu: "If I say no?"
Foster: "You are not that stupid, are you?"
Post-Act IV
Jacquio: "Thank you for bringing back the Shadow Statue, now give it to me!"
Ryu: "You must be dreaming!"
Jacquio: "You dare say 'No'?"
Ryu: "What?"
Irene: "Ryu!"
Ryu: "Get away from her!"
Irene: "No, Ryu, don't hand it over!"
Jacquio: "Leave the statue on the floor and move aside!"
"Good, thank you very much."
"Have a nice trip!"
Irene: "Oh no..."
Jacquio: "Throw the girl into the pond for the fish."
"Ha ha ha... finally I've got it. Tonight is the night of the first
revival after 700 years."
"Then I will rule the whole world. Ha ha ha..."
"Ha... ha... ha...!"
Pre-Bloody Malth Battle
Malth: "I, Bloody Master, won't let you pass here!"
Ryu: "In that case, I will kill you!"
Malth: "What a brave fool you are, just like your father!"
"But your father was a much better swordsman than you!"
Ryu: "So, it's you who killed my father!"
Malth: "Come and fight! Ryu Hayabusa!"
Post-Act V
Ryu: "You killed my father?"
Malth: "Killed? Hhm, I did fight with your father. But he didn't die..."
Ryu: "Liar!"
Malth: "I'm not lying. If you proceed further, you will come to know the
truth."
Pre-Masked Devil Battle
Jacquio: "OK, Ryu, show me how good you are!"
Ryu: "Devildoer, dare to come out."
Devil: "Don't even dream of defeating me, the Masked Devil."
Ryu: "I never lose!"
Jacquio: "Even... against your father?"
Ryu: "What?"
Jacquio: "Joe wasn't killed in the duel. He was turned into the Masked Devil."
Ryu: "I don't believe it!"
Jacquio: "Ha, ha, ha, a desperate fight between father and son. How
interesting!"
Ryu: "Father, wake up!"
Jacquio: "It's useless. He only thinks of killing you."
Ryu: "This is what Bloody Master was talking about. What should I do?"
"I must be calm... something is controlling father's mind. If I break the
control..."
"Wait, what's that? Oh, that's it!"
Pre-Jacquio Battle
Ryu: "Father!"
Ken: "Hey, what's going on... Ryu... is that you?"
Ryu: "Yes."
Jacquio: "Oh no! He's awake!"
Ryu: "Devildoer!"
Jacquio: You will all perish!"
Ken: "Oh!"
Ryu: "Father!"
Ken: "Ryu... Only you can defeat them!"
Ryu: "Father!"
"Devildoer, your day has come!"
Pre-Jashin Battle
Irene: "Ryu!"
Ryu: "You're all right? That's great."
"Father, let's go. We must leave this temple."
Ken: "Wait, Ryu, we still have time. Take the statues from the temple first."
"Before the Dark Moon comes..."
Irene: "Look at that, Ryu!"
Ryu: "An eclipse! This is the so-called Dark Moon... Oh no! The statues!"
Post-Act VI
Ryu: "Father, let's get out of here!"
Ken: "Ryu, I can't go on... this temple is about to collapse..."
"Take the girl and escape..."
Ryu: "How can you say that, father. I can't leave you here..."
Ken: "Ryu, you are a man now! Let me die with the statues..."
"Ryu, be brave..."
Ryu: "Father! Father!"
"Father... !!"
Epilogue
Irene: "Ryu..."
"This is 'Sea Wolf'."
Foster: "This is Foster, I saw the explosion via the satellite. Well Done!"
"Now, comes your next duty. Go and kill Ryu Hayabusa."
Irene: "What! To kill Ryu...?"
Foster: "That's right. Then bring me the statues."
Irene: "Yes sir. I will kill him. Trust me, Mr. Foster."
"Oh, Ryu..."
Ryu: "It looks like I get two rewards. I've got one already, the next one
is..."
"... is you, Foster, you're next!"
Foster: "Ryu, wait a moment... Ryu..."
Irene: "Ryu... What was your first reward?"
Ryu: "She's just in front of my eyes!"
