1) Introduction
=================
This is my first FAQ ever. I have attempted others (MGS, GTA) but making them
quickly got tiresome. So I decided to go with something smaller-scale. What
better than a sidescrolling SNES game! That being said, this is my first
published work on the internet, so please excuse any typographical or
grammatical errors, or any flaws in the layout.
Whirlo is a fairly short action/sidescroller released in 1992 that never
gained much popularity. It also seems to attempt to teach good morals to
those who play it, for if Whirlo ever admits in the course of the game that
he is not perfect, he is turned into an evil minion of Malix and sent to the
desert to guard treasure. It has fairly good gameplay, though nowhere near
the best. I found it (as a ROM, yes, don't nag me) one day and began playing
it and searched for a walkthrough on it because there was one point I
couldn't seem to get past (it only involved jumping higher than I thought at
the time possible) and I found absolutely no walkthroughs anywhere on the
internet! So, I'm writing this one.
It has the mediocre storyline you'd expect from a game of that day and age,
just something to justify making a game, thinking that it would become
popular from solely its gameplay. Everything's going swell, when suddenly
your village explodes! Oh wait, the mountain BESIDE your village explodes,
and for some reason that forces your village to sink beneath the surface of
the earth. Apparently, there was an evil villain imprisoned inside the now-
exploded mountain. She (? I think it's a girl.) spreads the ashes left over
from burning all that wood inside the mountain to keep warm all these years
over your village. All of the green blob things that are Whirlo's people
inhale the ashes off of the ground instead of sweeping them up, causing them
to suffer lung problems (affectionately referred to as "the plague").
Inevitably, the entire world hates Whirlo and wants his son to die, and this
provides justification for the existence of enemies. Now, of course, Whirlo
must venture around the world to collect light crystals in order to obtain
the Sun Cure and save his son!
I) Controls
=============
The controls aren't too hard to figure out. You get a tutorial near the
beginning of the game on the controls, but not until you kill a few enemies.
Up - Climb up ropes. Enter some doors.
Down - Hold in conjunction with the Y button while airborne to perform a
forkstomp. Climb down ropes.
Left - Move left.
Right - Move right.
A - Used to initiate your charged jumps.
B - Normal jump.
X - Press and hold while moving to start the Whirlowind. Release during
descent to perform it.
Y - Stab.
L - No use found.
R - No use found.
Start - Pause.
Select - No use found.
2) Walkthrough
================
There are eight "worlds", each one ending when you are given a password.
I) World One
==============
Whirlo's people had lived in the quiet land of Sandros, until the towering
Alsandra Mountain exploded, sinking Sandros beneath the earth's surface. The
explosion freed the arch fiend Malix from her subterranean Prison. Malix
spread her' Ashes of Despair across Sandros and let loose a deadly plague.
And so Whirlo's son was stricken with the plague. The child became weaker and
weaker every day. Struggling for breath.... Whirlo vowed to save his son......
a) Sandros
============
You start out in front of what I assume is Whirlo's House. The ground is
covered in ash (at least it's true to the storyline).
This level isn't hard at all. The only enemies here are cavemen, as well as
two devilbees and a bar of soap. (I'm not joking.) They're all easily
avoidable, or you can just kill them. When you get to the part where the ash-
covered guy tells you that you need to jump over the high wall to get to the
Elder, he tells you how to do it. As you're moving, hold the A button and
then release it to jump over it.
When you get to the place where the ground is no longer covered in ash and
there are trees above you, there is a shallow pit full of cavemen. A fun
thing to do here is dash while holding your pitchfork under you, and you sort
of bounce across their heads. Anyway, kill all the enemies and go past the
sign that says "Haunted Forest".
b) Haunted Forest
===================
You're in a forest (obviously) and you're crossing small islands through a
river, whose current is going the opposite direction that you're trying to go.
If you stand in it, it will drag you backwards. An interesting scene to
witness is
Whirlo getting his pitchfork stuck in the river while performing death from
above, and then watch him slowly creep left. The only thing haunted here is
the way the crabs fly, and the constellation-type women and deer in the
background.
Watch out for the helicrabs and don't stand on the crocodiles when they have
their eyes open or are chomping. Where there are three or four crocs in a row,
you can just skip over them. Eventually, you will exit the haunted forest,
but it's still the same level.
The game will tell you how to use the whirlowind, and you will have to use it
to get through the pillar of snow up ahead. How did this pillar form? Who
knows.
Anyway, you have to be moving when you press X to use the whirlowind. Hold it,
then when you start descending, release it at any point to hurl yourself
forward.
When you get to the big snowball, just whirlowind it. At the end of this
level, when the game tells you to "knock it like you mean it", do a
whirlowind into the tree. A rope will fall down. Jump towards it and hold up
to climb up it.
c) Elder's House
==================
This is just a cutscene. The Elder tells you that only the Sun Cure will cure
his son. To find the sun cure, you must travel the world and find the seven
light crystals. The elder gives you a light crystal that he found in the
forest long ago. He tells you that to escape the sunken city of Sandros, you
must give water to Sizus.
d) Sandros (cont.)
====================
Now you must jump across platforms that will fall once you touch them. You
can jump most of them, but there are 3 in a row that you will need to skip
across. Between them there is some solid ground, and the ones after that only
need to be jumped across. Then you are on solid ground for the rest of the
level.
When the rocks start rolling after you, power jump over the ones that are
bouncing low or rolling, and go under the ones that are bouncing high.
Whirlowind through the snow pillar at the end, and the sign will tell you
that Sizus is below. Jump into the hole.
e) Valley of Sizus
====================
The dead-looking crow/plant thing that you see when you land is Sizus. Go
right and jump over the stone pillar. Now just keep running to the right.
Don't worry about the ice shards that are falling for now; as long as you
keep moving, they will not touch you. After going uphill a ways, you will
find a giant snowball stuck on an ice stick. The ice stick is one of the few
objects that you can interact with without one of you dying, as you will
simply bounce off of it. Anyway, whirlowind the thing, and then start running
back the way you came. Jump over the ice shards (make sure not to dash or you
will get crushed by the snowball) and when you see the little hole with the
ice platform in it, jump on it, and it will sink down a bit to take you out
of danger of being crushed. The giant snowball will destroy the stone pillar
you jumped over earlier, which unplugs an artesian well. It will now be
raining everywhere, which means Sizus is getting the water he needs. Attempt
to cross the well and it will propel you to where Sizus is. Sizus will now
come back to life, and start producing bubbles. Jump inside of him to be
released in a bubble, which allows you to escape from Sandros.
You now receive an unnecessarily long password. It can be found in the
passwords section.
II) World Two
==============
Whirlo escaped from Sandros, and reached the base of Alsandra Mountain.
a) Mt. Alsandra
=================
Go right, evading the Cualkmen. Eventually you will find a guy trapped in a
suspended cage. He asks you to help him. Keep saying you'll help him or else
ghosts will turn you into a minion of Malix and you will be sentenced to go
to the desert forever. I'm serious.
You will now fight the Boss Cualkman, also known as Andy. He will not move
until you move, so start up a whirlowind. He will jump over you if you get on
his level when trying the whirlowind, so release it as you're just above his
head and he'll jump into you. Repeat once more for an easy victory.
Andy will explain that his child was taken hostage so he wanted to sacrifice
this guy as a replacement. Then he agrees that if you will defeat the King of
the Crescent Moon then he will give you a light crystal. You of course, agree,
and then Andy flies you up to a floating chunk of land.
Go right, killing or avoiding the various enemies. Be especially wary of the
trees blowing ice at you. After a while you will find the cualkman village on
fire, with cualkmen lying around. Go a little further and you will see Andy
feebly trying to break down the gate. Whirlowind the left crescent, only to
have it keep sliding back before you can whirlowind it further. Keep
whirlowinding it and eventually Andy will jump on top of it so it doesn't
slide back so quickly. After that you can keep whirlowinding it, and
eventually the crescent moons will touch and the door will open. You will
automatically enter.
Now you are standing on stone walkways with fire/lava below you. Avoid the
fire baddies and continue right. You will get to a point where the lava will
start rising and falling. Time it so that you are on high enough ground when
the lava rises. Once you see a fire-spitting stone pillar the lava level will
stop fluctuating and will stay low. Keep going right to exit the lava place.
Jump on the floating stone platforms to cross the lava, and kill the enemies
on the way. Now jump on the stone platform going up and down. You have to
jump from stone platform to stone platform, all of them going up and down at
the same time. Time it so that you will power jump right before the platform
you're on begins going down, and facing the next stone platform so that you
will land on it. After about three platforms, there will be a stationary one.
It is much easier to jump on. From that one, regular jump to the next one,
then regular jump to the stone walkway. Continue left, jumping the holes and
killing or evading the enemies.
Go up the stone platforms much like the last ones, until you reach a set of
stone walkways going right. Go right. Reach more platforms. There are some
platforms going off to the right that go to what I assume to be a bonus scene
of that guy you saved earlier counting money. You need to back the way if
came if you went here. Now go up these platforms and keep going on, killing
the enemies. Eventually you reach another stone platform that will stay put
until you get on it. It takes you to this big stone walkway with a green tree
thing on it. This is where the King of the Crescent Moon is.
This boss is really like a sumo match. The only way the King can kill you is
by pushing you off of the walkway, and the only way that you can kill the
King is by pushing him off of the walkway. The only way to do this is with
whirlowinds. The easiest way to defeat him is to lure him to one side and
jump over him, then whirlowind him off of that side.
Now a light crystal will fall where the green tree is. Get it, and Andy will
show up. Then he will find his little brother Steven. Then the King of the
Crescent Moon comes back and tells Andy and Whirlo that "this isn't over" and
calls a meteor shower. Andy tells you to run, and the chapter is over.
You get another unnecessarily long password. Refer to the passwords section.
III) World Three
================
A huge meteor hit Alsandra Mountain. The three were blown in different
directions. Whirlo was flung to the castle towering over Caldera Mountain.
The castle was being flooded by an endless torrant of water.
a) Cauldra Castle
===================
Go right, avoiding the water fountains and watching out for the vultures
trying to attack you from behind. You'll come to a waterfall. Whirlowind
above the part of the waterfall that looks different. You'll land in a
submarine-type thing.
b) Gramps Dock
================
This starts with a cutscene of you talking to Gramps. You ask about the light
crystals and he says he doesn't know anything about them, and to go and ask
the princess.
Jump on the platform powered by the little robot. Another one will soon come
up on the left. The one you're standing on will stop while the other one
gains height. They start out going up slow but get much faster. You have to
keep this up for a good while, and it's likely to take more than one try.
Just keep jumping back and forth between them, and eventually you'll reach
the top. Jump up and go right.
c) The Princess
=================
Go right until you see the princess. She is sobbing about her boyfriend gone
to find the gift that he gave her that she lost. Whirlo asks about the light
crystals and the princess said that nick would be able to help. She mentions
that he has a beard, loves cucumbers, and plays the flute. Then she bursts
into tears and you are flooded out of her room.
d) Catacomb
=============
Go right to find out that the water level needs to rise for you to be able to
cross to get the treasure. Go left to the den of the Nick clan. Everyone here
is named Nick. The guy gives you tea for five people and you have to ask
everyone questions to figure out who really knows the princess' Nick. Climb
up the first rope and jump off to the first platform on the left. This is the
guy that knows where the princess is. Ask him one of the questions and then
take him to the princess.
e) The Princess (again)
=========================
Nick will tell her why he hasn't come back and makes the princess feel a
little better. Then, the thief that you saved earlier in the game comes and
tells the princess that Nick found the gift he got her in the Coral Forest,
and insists that Nick said to give him a reward. The princess ignores him and
goes on about how Nick is in danger. Then the princess floods you out of her
room with her tears again.
f) Catacomb (again)
=====================
You fall back down to where the Nick clan is on the left and the treasure is
on the right. The water level has risen now and you can cross the spikes on
the starfish. Hop on them, and they will act as if they're going to fall, but
they'll stay. Hop across and get the light crystal. You'll be taken back to
the princess.
g) The Princess (cont.)
=========================
Whirlo will present the light crystal to the princess and ask if that was the
gift from Nick. She says it was, and to take it with you in hopes that it
will help you find Nick. She then floods you out of her room for the final
time.
h) Catacomb (cont.)
=====================
Go right to where the light crystal was and go past it. Cross the starfish as
the water rises and go to the right. The thief will show up and ask you if
you want to know something. Go a little farther. He will tell you he found a
key in the princess' room. He will nag you to team up with him, insisting
that there is much treasure in the castle. Then he haggles with you about how
much of it you can have if you help him. He ends up at 50/50, and then you
have to follow him back to that big door. Decline his offer, or else you'll
be turned into an evil minion of Malix. Go back right until the scene changes.
Get ready to run, because now the princess' tears are overflowing the whole
castle. Keep dashing and jump when you have to. When you get to the end,
whirlowind through the hole you see.
IV) World Four
===============
Whirlo escaped from Caldera Mountain. The shattered base of the mountain was
engulfed in flame. Whirlo decided to look for the Princess' boyfriend, Nick.
a) Dragon Forest
==================
Go right and press up to go into the Pixies House.
b) Pixies House
=================
This is a cutscene of Whirlo asking about Nick. They mention a man that had a
beard stopped by and said he was on his way to the Dragon Forest. Whirlo
tells them about his son and his quest to find the Sun Cure. They wish him
luck, and then worry about their house washing away.
c) Dragon Forest (cont.)
==========================
Back in the Nick clan's cave, there was a guy named Buck doing a stunt with
knives. He's here as well, and now he does it blindfolded. Then he mentions
that a girl that walked by was cute. This is the girl that was at Gramps Dock.
Go right into Toadstool Cave.
d) Toadstool Cave
===================
Go right. Avoid the mushroom's spores. The grey rolling stones will try to
trick you, simply go backwards a bit to have room to jump over them.
Whirlowind the square stone out of your way. Keep going, watching out for
another purple mushroom. Hop the spike slugs.
Wait for the paladin to fire its beams, then jump it or destroy it. Evade or
destroy the grunts. Forkstomp the last paladin a few times, then cross the
ropes. Tornadofork in between ropes to kill the clown bees. Evade the spike
stalks as they drop out of the ceiling, going under them as they retract. Go
through another set.
Now you will be in a room with two platforms. Jump on them and they will
begin to ascend. There are a couple of yodas as well as a lot of Bumble
Clowns here. Just avoid them or kill them to make it easier. Hop off and go
right once you reach the top.
Go through the small hole and then power jump while running onto the cliff.
Kill the grunt and whirlowind the paladin. Whirlowind the next paladin and
then kill or evade the spike slugs. Jump over the next paladin and kill at
least one of the next two spike slugs. You can kill or jump over the
remaining one.
Keep going and evade the grunt or stab him so fast that he doesn't have time
to toss a spike ball. Run over and jump over the first two grey rolling
stones, then run under the low ceiling and charge up a power jump while
running once the ceiling gets higher. Release the jump as the faster stone
rolls towards you and you should clear both of them. Run forward; pass the
first high ceiling and then whirlowind without releasing under the second
high ceiling. Do it again to miss the second stone. Keep running and power
jump up the next hill, and then quickly run and fall in the small pit to
avoid the paladin's horizontal laser. After it passes, get up and hit the
paladin a couple times. When the second paladin's laser starts coming towards
you, get back in the pit, and then get out and finish killing the first
paladin. Run quickly to the next pit. After the paladin's laser passes, get
up and kill him. Continue right.
Continue right a bit and you will find Nick. They exchange a few words then
he tells you that Conda, who is up ahead, has one. Go up ahead.
e) The Anconda
================
He will start out by jumping above the screen and swooping down, almost
touching down in the middle. Then he will fall straight down where you are
and chase you if you moved. He will continue this pattern until you beat him.
You can beat him with regular stabs, but this requires a lot of skill and
concentration. Whirlowind him a few times to end it quickly. Once he dies he
drops a light crystal. Pick it up, and then Gramps' boat crashes through to
you.
3) Version History
====================
10/14/06 - v0.5 After my last update, I got bored with making this
walkthrough.
Now I am bored to the point that I am going to finish it, or at least some
more of it. I was planning on going into excruciating detail on every level,
but I have since discovered that that would be too tedious as well as
unnecessary.
Anyway, the things that got done. I redid the walkthrough to be shorter and
reordered the table of contents. Abolished the idea of HP, it is way too
complicated to matter. Finished walkthrough up to the end of the fourth world.
6/6/06 - v0.18 Finished walkthrough about halfway through Mt. Alsandra, then
it was time to go to work.
6/4/06 - v0.13 Finished walkthrough up to the end of the first world. Added
an explanation of HP to the intro. Put a noodle in my hat and called it ramen
noodles.
6/1/06 - v0.05 Got the basic format up. Wrote the introduction and finished
the walkthrough up until halfway through the Haunted Forest. Called it a
night.
