1. FIRESTARTER
--------------

Using the START button to execute the fire command in the field of
battle never fails (unless you try to do it in the rain, of course).
Unfortunately, LIMIT 1 USE PER BATTLE PER CLAN, so use it wisely...

2. THE TREASURES OF THE CAPITAL
-------------------------------

Previously pointed out by KR Zhang, anytime you capture Province 10 in
a war, you receive war spoils.  So the Imperial Seal, Hua Tuo's Book of
Medicine, the Red Hare, the mighty Black Dragon sword, and scores of
other charms, books, and swords can be successfully acquired just by
invading and capturing Province 10 over and over and over again.

3. CREATE YOUR RULER'S COMPATABILITY?
-------------------------------------

Yes you can! And here's how...

When choosing the number of players, select 2; one as the ruler whose
compatability you would like to have, and the other as your created
ruler.  PLAYER 1 MUST BE THE ONE TO CHOOSE A RULER.  Player 2 will
choose to create a ruler, and that ruler will be given the same
compatability of the ruler that Player 1 has chosen.  Then, all you
have to do is have Player 1 quit, and you are good to go.

4. CREATE YOUR RULER, THEN FORCE HIM TO SURRENDER!!
---------------------------------------------------

This is perhaps the absolute FUNNEST thing to do in this game.  Please
note that the intent is to be another ruler and not the one you've
created.  First, you must create a ruler (also create a follower as
well, unless you don't want to gain another quality general from the
surrender...).  Essentially, you are creating two talented officers you
would like to gain for future use with the clan you originally intend
on being.  You want to place the home province neighboring your
original rulers' province (unfortunately, long-distance surrenders are
just not viable in this game). For instance, in the 1st scenario (DONG
ZHUO SIEZES LUOYANG), if you are ruling as Liu Bei and want a created
ruler to surrender to you, place their home province in 5 (directly
south of Liu Bei).  This location is also ideal since there are no
uninhabited provinces nearby for the created ruler to retreat to
(isolation is important here).

Now, play as two different rulers- one who wants to unify China, and
one who wants to surrender to you.

There are 6 keys to a successful surrender-
1. Hostility levels must be at 0 for both engaging clans (can be
  achieved by way of gifts of gold, alliance, or even marriage).
2. Surrendering clan's province must not neighbor any vacant provinces.
3. Surrendering clan must not have any gold (or very, very little).
4. Surrendering clan must not have any troops.
5. Make sure that the surrendering clan is now being controlled by CPU,
  otherwise your threat will be cancelled because you "Can't threaten
  another player".  I really hate that rule.
6. The threatening clan's messenger must have high charm.

Keep in mind that in the time between starting the game and having your
created ruler surrender, you can do anything you want with that created
ruler... have him (or her) as your ally and joint attack some provinces,
use him for reinforcements... or do what I do- hire an advisor and do
nothing but feed your follower scrolls until he can't learn anymore.
This way you will have 2 stellar generals prime and ready to surrender
to you.

**Make sure you save the game BEFORE you choose to let the CPU control
your created ruler.  Sometimes neighboring rulers like to just waltz
right into your province that no longer has any soldiers or gold... a
defeat would result in the death of that ruler, and that obviously ruins
your plans...

5. BECOME PROFITABLE BY LEVERAGING RICE
---------------------------------------

Price = x
x = # of rice per 100 gold

This technique comes in quite handy in your first 2 or 3 years of rule,
but unfortunately, isn't as easy to yield as much as it can during the
later years of ruling (where it isn't as important since you'll probably
have many provinces to provide you with the resources that you need.)
This requires a small stroke of good luck and is easiest to do in more
populated provinces since traders frequent these places more often.

Rule 1- Do not sell rice until harvest, or unless you have an abundance,
       which should be decided under your discretion.  "Do not neglect
       the needs of your people" as your advisor would say.
Rule 2- The INSTANT you see prices for rice at 65 or above, save the
       game.  There's a chance that the number will rise next month,
       but in the event that it doesn't, or if the trader isn't in
       town, you can revert back and buy as much rice as you can afford
       ("afford" meaning taking into account the budgeted amount of
       gold you need to cultivate land and maintain generals'
       loyalties.).
Rule 3- Once you see the price fall below 30, save the game- for the
       same reasons above, and sell as much rice as you see fit (if
       you've had really good prices, the computer may limit you since
       the maxout value for gold and rice is 30,000 apiece.).
       Sometimes you can see prices as low as 7, which would mean 700
       rice would translate into 10,000 gold!!!

6. SECRETS ABOUT CPU BEHAVIOR
-----------------------------

-Under no circumstances will Liu Bei, Sun Jian/Sun Ce/Sun Quan, or
Cao Cao/Cao Pi EVER surrender to you.  I've tried countless amounts of
times, but to no avail.  If you can, please email me (see credits) with
the year, ruler, opposing clan, hostility level, charm of messenger,
etc. so I may try myself (and to update this guide).

-Generals come most loyal to you when they are bribed in the field of
battle, whether it be on the spot or from a successful BETRAYAL attempt.
Loyalty level will be at 80 or higher.  Keep this in mind when you are
having a tough time recruiting from a neighboring enemy.

-In the field of battle, a commanding general will neither challenge nor
answer a challenge of personal combat.  The one exception is if you
have your commanding general propose the challenge.  I once had Liu Bei
challenge, and Cao Cao answered.  Needless to say, I got rocked.

-For some unethical reason, the CPU would rather attack a neighboring
province rather than occupying a vacant one.  So if your neighbor is
bulking up the troops, don't think they are going to move into the
nearest vacant province... (few exceptions are when the province has a
ridiculous amount of generals under one roof... Liu Biao and Yuan Shao,
for example)

7. PRO-ACTION REPLAY CODES
--------------------------

For those that emulate (like myself), here are some treats...

7E0852 FF    Create-a-player MAXIMUM creation points
7E0852 00    Create-a-player NONE creation points

These two codes must be used in conjunction with another, and must
follow these SPECIFIC guidelines to keep game from glitching out...

1. Once you BEGIN assigning points, then activate cheats, with only the
  MAXIMUM cheat checked as being "active".
2. When you have arrived at the desired statistics, then you must
  "uncheck" the MAXIMUM cheat, and then "check" the NONE cheat, ALL
  WHILE CHEATS ARE STILL ACTIVATED.
3. If done correctly, the game will not let you add anymore points, and
  will prompt you "Is this information correct?".  Select YES.  This
  is when you DEACTIVATE ALL CHEATS.
4. Taadaa!  You've done it.  Steps 1-3 also apply to creating the
  follower.

  rice totals, rice market prices (yes), generals' statistics, etc.
