O============================================================================O

Loretta's Portrait [ロレッタの肖像] is commonly known as Sherlock Holmes:
Loretta no Shouzou.  This is a Graphical Text Adventure game made by SEGA
released on February 18th, 1987 for the cost of 5,250 Yen ($58.00 USD) for the
SEGA Master System.  You play the roles of famous detective, Sherlock Holmes,
and his assistant, Dr. John H. Watson.  Their case is to recover a stolen
portrait titled "The Girl in a Red Hat".

Loretta's Portrait was never released outside of Japan.  And as of January
2010, no known English patch was released for this game.  Therefore everything
written in this guide are from my own translations.  I am not fluent in
Japanese and what's provided are translated to the best of my knowledge, any
corrections on my translations are most welcomed!  I have also included the
Japanese text, so please encode this document in "Japanese (Shift-JIS)" to be
able to view it.

There are unmarked spoilers in this document.  I written this in a way to tell
the player how to beat this game and I may skip areas that serve no purpose in
getting toward the end.  To experience the most fulfillment is to explore
areas on your own and use this as a guide to help keep you on the right track.
I hope you enjoy playing this game as much as I did!

| [06] CHAPTER I - "THE CASE OF THE STOLEN PAINTING"                         |
O============================================================================O

What one man can invent, another can discover...

    o------------------------------------------------------------------o

You start off with two items in your inventory, "Money" [おかね] and an
"Address Book" [

・ "Take" [とる], "Screen" [がめん], and "Pipe" [パイプ].

The cane and violin is to the right of the fireplace, and the pistol is to the
left.  The pipe is inside the fireplace.  There is also a [ふえ] "Whistle" in
the left drawer of the shelf to the left side, but this item is not necessary
toward beating the game.

    o------------------------------------------------------------------o
    | B-5:  CLAY'S GALLERY [

Dr. Watson will tag along with you.  At the gallery, Clay is standing here.

Clay tells you the clerk was the last person seen transporting the painting
when it was stolen.  So we'll have to question him.

The money is the item after the pipe in your inventory.  It'll loosen the
clerk's lips and he'll tell you the thief looked a lot like Evans.

Take the newspaper on the table and an article catches Holmes' eye.  You learn
that Evans opened his exhibition at Clay's Gallery.  And Count La Grande and
Madam Katrina will release "The Girl in a Red Hat" to the public.  La Grande
does not have anything interesting to say.  So meet up with Madam Katrina.

Philip has a stiff lip and won't tell you anything.  Bribe him with the money
and he'll tell you that Evans lives in Norwood.

    o------------------------------------------------------------------o
    | EVANS' HOUSE [

・ "Take" [とる], "Screen" [がめん], and "Ceiling" [てんじょう].

There is a package hidden in the ceiling!  Upon opening, it turns out to be
the stolen painting, "The Girl in a Red Hat"!  At this time, Evans comes in.

・ "Ask" [きく] and "3 Years Ago" [3年前のこと].

Evans admitted he stolen "The Girl in a Red Hat" because he received a threat
with the intention of harming it.  Also the girl in the painting is named
Reticia and 3 years ago she was found at the River Mole.  Evans gives you the
threat he received, its cryptic message must be deciphered:

レースの                               | Renaissance Era
Victory     Emerges
Lucky       Loser
                                      |
The true origin of
The Girl in a Red Hat"
| leads to a dangerous path

If you read the first capital letters of each word, you get the name "Revell"!
However the actual literal translation of the clue would be lost in
translation to non-Japanese readers.  It really states, "The race / Bells
sounds the / Renaissance".  If you read the first character in each of the
three lines, it reads "RE-BE-RU" [レベル] or the surname "Revell".  The
translation I offer is one way for an English reader to easily decipher
"Revell" out of the letter.

Here is your password to start at Reigate:  「

O============================================================================O
| [07] CHAPTER II - "THE GIRL IN A RED HAT"                                  |
O============================================================================O

Let us hear the suspicions.  I will look after the proofs...

    o------------------------------------------------------------------o

When you pull out the newspaper, a passerby notices and points you in the
direction to the Revell Mansion.

    o------------------------------------------------------------------o
    | REVELL MANSION [

There is a gatekeeper at the entrance, he won't say anything of importance.
So enter the mansion and you will meet with the master, Richard Revell.

Richard tells you how his daughter, Loretta, went out for a walk by the river
and hasn't come back since.  Strangely enough, this sounds exactly like Evans'
story with Reticia!  What is the connection between Reticia and Loretta?

There are four bars on the shelf to the far left, where the glasses are at.
Select the first bar.  You will find a slightly wavy strand of hair, and a
single shoe with blood on it.

Then you hear the sound of a window crashing.  Apparently someone threw a rock
inside with a letter attached to it, it states:

「これいじょう かぎまわるな!         | "Stop snooping around any further.
| Otherwise, you will die!"

A threat!  Quickly, let's go to where it was thrown from!

・ "Move" [いどう] and "Go Outside" [そとにでる].

Watson mentions that he lost sight of the perpetrator.

At this time, you can explore the Revell Mansion, but it is not necessary.
Here are the occupants of the mansion:  There is a maid and a steward in the
dining room; Edward, Richard's younger brother; Julia, Richard's wife; a guest
room currently unoccupied, but later Evans will stay there; Patricia, a young
10 year old girl, she was mentioned that she was looking for a tutor in the
newspaper; and Oscar, who works for a company owned by Richard.

Upon speaking with the occupants, you learn:  Julia married Richard 11 years
ago and Patricia is their child.  Richard has a fortune in trades his family
made in India.  And the plates in Edward's room shown that they were inherited
from a Count Stobart in 1875.

Now we can travel to the nearby town of Redhill.

A resident tells you the River Mole is on the bank of the Baron Inn.

    o------------------------------------------------------------------o
    | BARON INN [
    o------------------------------------------------------------------o

This is where Evans and Reticia first met.  There is a landscape painting here
which catches your eye.

Watson notes that this painting is signed by Neil Evans!

Talk to the innkeeper, he tells you he received the landscape painting from
Evans as thanks for treating an injured young woman taken in by him.  He
remembered there being a large scar on the nape of her neck.  We could use
this information to determine whether or not Reticia is really Richard's
daughter, Loretta.

・ "Move" [いどう] and "Go Outside" [そとにでる].

As you're leaving, the innkeeper gives you a bottle of brandy on the house.

    o------------------------------------------------------------------o

    o------------------------------------------------------------------o
    | EVANS' HOUSE [
    o------------------------------------------------------------------o

It's time to see if this young woman is really Reticia or Loretta.

As you examined Reticia's hair, you notice it's the same as the slightly wavy
strand of hair we found inside Revell Mansion.  And when we examined her neck,
she seems to have a scar.  This means Reticia is really Loretta!  You will
convince Reticia that she will need to see her father, Richard, right away.
But Evans stops you, he needs to see more evidence to back up your claims.

・ "Take" [とる], "Screen" [がめん], and "Opened Drawer"

There is an embroidered handkerchief inside the opened drawer with the initial
"L" on it, and Loretta's name begins with the letter "L"!  Now we need to find
one more conclusive proof.

Click on the black easel where it looks like it breaks apart at the bottom,
almost resembling a miniature top hat.  As you move the easel, you will find
the other pair of shoe found earlier at the Revell Mansion.

・ "Take" [とる], "Screen" [がめん], and "Easel" [イーゼル].
・ "Take" [とる], "Screen" [がめん], and "Reticia" [レティシア].

This is all the proof you need to convince Evans that Reticia is really
Richard's missing daughter.

    o------------------------------------------------------------------o
    | REVELL MANSION [

Richard is surprised to see Reticia because she looks so much like Loretta.
Show him the proof he needs to know that this is in fact his missing daughter.

・ "Show" [みせる] and "Shoes" [くつ].
・ "Show" [みせる] and "Handkerchief" [ハンカチ].

The father is overjoyed that he finally found his daughter after 3 long years.
It is a happy reunion, but unfortunately, Loretta had suffered from amnesia.
As you talk with Richard, you learn he was going to have her marry Oscar.

・ "Move" [いどう] and "Go Outside" [やしきのなか].
・ "Take" [とる], "Screen" [がめん], and "Bone" [ホネ].
・ "Take" [とる], "Screen" [がめん], and "Lamp" [ランプ].

The maid panics and mention Patricia's name before running out.  Has something
happened to that little girl?  Let's hurry toward her room!

From here, go:  1 North, 1 West, 8 North, 1 East, and 1 North.

Patricia is seen collapsed on the floor.  She's not breathing, the poor child
is dead...

When you move Patricia's body, a coffee cup is found.  The cup itself has a
slight aroma of cocoa.  Could her death be related to this drink?

Upon speaking with the occupants, you learn:  Julia is Richard's second wife.
Loretta was Richard's daughter from his first marriage to a woman named Tracy,
who had died years ago.  When asking Julia, she will say, "You mean to tell me
someone else drank that hot chocolate?"  Her tone seems to imply she knew what
was in it.  Edward did not seem to mourn her death much, he was only
interested in a game of poker.  And Evans did not knew who Patricia was.

Oscar will suggest that maybe the hot chocolate was originally meant to kill
Richard.  If Loretta doesn't regain her memories and Richard passes away, his
estate would have to be divided amongst two individuals.  Who are these two?
We can eliminate Evans and Loretta; therefore it leaves us with Edward, Julia,
and Oscar.

Let's go back to the dining room.  From here, go:  1 North, 1 West, 8 North, 1
East, and 1 North.

The maid tells us that usually Julia hands Richard his cup of hot chocolate
every evening.  But today, Patricia decided to do it.

The steward tells you Patricia is not allowed to drink hot chocolate because
it gives her cavities.  This is looking grim, let's meet with Richard.

From here, go:  1 North, 1 West, 4 North, 1 West, 2 North, 1 East, and 4
North.

Richard's eyes are closed and he's not moving at all.  Were we too late?

Richard wakes up after you gave him some brandy, he presents a letter to you.
The letter reads:

| "I'm taking care of Loretta.
| Sign these documents
| Loretta's life will end!"

What documents is this letter referring to?

Richard tells you the documents is a title to a piece of property to transfer
it over to "Count S".  Could this be the Count Stobart we read on the plate in

Oscar divulge more that Richard's estate is basically left up to Julia and
Edward.  Therefore these two are the individuals he mentioned.

You take the time to sort out what you learned so far:  Loretta disappeared 3
years old, the scar on her neck was from someone who tried to kill her, since
she is the first heir to Richard's fortune.  The perpetrator didn't expected
Loretta to survive, so when she returned to the Revell Mansion, they had no
choice, but to kidnap her.  If she is still missing by the time Richard turns
up dead, who knows what might happen...  You decided to have a rest.

Here is your password to start at the garden:  「

We're going to explore Oscar's room.  From here, go:  1 North, 1 East, 7

Loretta in order to meet Richard's expectations.  I heard that woman was seen
putting poison in the hot chocolate.  I need to question him, but surely I
know their whereabouts always vary."  We know "that woman" must mean Julia,
but who is "him".  We still have a lot to think over...

You will note the location to be the Regent Theatre.  Let's get out of here.

He tells you that Brenda usually associates herself with Count Stobart.

He tells you Count Stobart is a descendant of noble blood.  He was handed down
his father's failing business and lost everything because of it.

・ "Show" [みせる] and "Photo" [しゃしん].

You will learn that Brenda married for money and Stobart lived somewhere in
northern London.  So from what you've gathered, Count Stobart was planning on
marrying Brenda.  But he became desperate, so they had a plan.  Brenda went by
the name of Julia and married Richard, they attacked Loretta at the River Mole
to ensure she won't inherit the Revell's fortune.  Then they tried to kill
Richard by poisoning him, thus leaving Julia to inherit everything.

We cannot let them get away with this, we need to find Loretta!  You will have
to use trial and error to figure out which house is Count Stobart's.  You will
eventually figure out he lives at A-4.

by using this hairpin!

all this, now if only Loretta could regain her memories...  Wait, Edward told
us that she loved playing "Petit Chien".  Maybe this could jog her memory?

Loretta began to remember, she used to play this on the piano.  She recalled
that day where she was strolling along the river, she was stabbed by a masked
man.  Then suddenly a scream was heard, it sounded like Julia's!

    | THE MOMENT OF TRUTH                                              |
    o------------------------------------------------------------------o

Julia and Richard are here.  It seems someone came in and tried to stab
Richard, but Julia protected him.  We need Julia to confess everything.

・ "Show" [みせる] and "Bottle" [びん].

Julia confessed that she put the poison into the hot chocolate, but she didn't
think it would kill her daughter.  She said that she did everything according
to Stobart's plan.  Julia said that it was unfortunate for Oscar to die, but
they must stop him.  That "him" is most likely Stobart, but who is he exactly?
You are now given a suspect list which you must choose who do you think he is.
Here are your choices:

・ "Richard" [リチャード].
・ "Edward" [エドワード].
・ "Neil Evans" [ニール・エバンス].
・ "Oscar" [オスカー].
・ "Steward" [しつじ].
・ "Watson" [ワトスン].

We know that it couldn't be Richard, he was supposed to be poisoned.  He was
the reason why this whole case has started.  If you accused him, Richard will
yell at you why would you think he will do this to damage his daughter.
Edward loved his niece, Loretta.  He done nothing, but help us throughout it
all.  If you accuse him, Richard will say that Edward is a Revell and his
brother.  Neil Evans loved Loretta, he was the one who saved her life.  If you
accuse him, Richard will say you are making a wild accusation.  We found Oscar
stabbed in the farm shed, therefore he cannot be Stobart.  If you accuse him,
Richard will remind you that he is dead.  If you accuse Watson, Richard will
say that you are being way too harsh.

If you choose any of these five choices above, you will get a GAME OVER.

Now all that leaves us is with the steward.  If you select "Steward" [
Richard will agree that he has to be Stobart and he might be getting away!

We need to get back to the sculpture, Stobart will be using that to make his
getaway.  From here, go:  1 North, 1 West, 2 North, 1 West, 3 North, 1 West, 1

    o------------------------------------------------------------------o

Again, it's dark in here.

Why, hello, Stobart!  Stobart will shoot at you, but it missed and he runs.
Quick, he can't let him get away!  From here, go 3 East and 2 South.  We will
catch up to Stobart, but he still have his pistol drawn at us.

It hits Stobart and he falls, "Dammit, to go this far..."  In his dying
breath, he reveals everything.  This is just a summary of his final words:

"My father was burdened with a heavy debt due to his failed business, he lost
the theatre and later died in despair.  When I came upon my father's personal
effects, I found his diary.  Inside, it talked about how Richard swindled my
father and took everything from him.  I knew Richard occasionally visited the
Regent Theatre, there is where I learned the death of his first wife.  So I
had an idea, I will bring in Julia and have her marry him.  Julia and I kept
in contact for a few years, I was able to live in the Revell Mansion posing as
a steward.  Little by little I was able to administer poison into Richard's
drink, gradually killing him.  I already knew Julia will inherit everything,
but one person was in my way... Loretta.

"I had made up my mind, I dressed up as Jack the Ripper and approached Loretta
3 years ago.  I killed her as she was strolling the River Mole, but before I
could confirm her death, I heard footsteps.  I ran, but when I later returned,
I couldn't find her body anywhere.  Everything would have gone according to
plan if Loretta never came back.  However, I knew she was still alive, after
seeing Evans' portrait and then you bringing her back to this mansion.  I had
to kidnap Loretta and urge Richard to sign over the deeds to me.  But I didn't
expect Julia to confess everything to Oscar.  Something had to be done.  I
called him over to the garden last night, there I killed him in order to keep
him quiet.  That is all.  Julia is not guilty of anything, I planned all of
this.  Please convey this to my master Richard.  I regret doing this..."

You are given the time it took you to finish this game.

    o------------------------------------------------------------------o
    | THE END                                                          |
    o------------------------------------------------------------------o

After the incident, Julia entered a monastery.  Richard and Loretta are now
both safe and living harmoniously.  Also Neil and Loretta are staying together
happily ever after.

Congratulations, you've beaten Loretta's Portrait!
