===============================================================================

Line Of Fire is a Sega Master System shooter which I continually find myself
going back and back to. Being the first game I ever got for my (now dusty)
SMS, I have a long history with Line Of Fire.

I have written guides for many Sega Master System games in an attempt to
completely cover the SMS's uncovered games with the help of others. This is
an FAQ/Walkthrough that is meant to provide a descriptive walkthrough as well
as to bear a rundown of all the enemies throughout Line Of Fire.

        4.1. Stage I                                                  [4100]
+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+

                  ~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~
Enemy Base -- Escape from the enemy base.
                  ~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~

Okay, you're Jack. As of now, you are currently riding your vehicle out of
this place with the superweapon in tow. However, enemies are already
engaging you. Move forward a bit and shoot out the preliminary Soldiers. There
are arrows on the ground, but they don't really do anything. Along the walls,
you might find various doorways in which Soldiers run out of. Jack has a
limited amount of missiles, so try to refrain from using those right now.

Keep moving forward past a few walls and corridors until you reach a special
Shielded Soldier. Defeating this dude will allow you access outside. However,
you need to watch his shost. As a Shielded Soldier, he is capable of
deflecting your shots with his bullet-proof shield. Also, his gun shoots
larger and more damaging rounds. Keep moving along the bottom of the screen
and shoot upward when he lowers his shield. Avoid the shots that he takes at
you and use your chance by sending bullets into him.

With that freak defeated, you'll begin to move outside. However, you are
still in the confinement of the base. More Soldiers will begin running at you
now. After defeating those, Grenadiers will appear up ahead. You can easily
tell who they are as they throw big, green things at you. A direct hit with a
grenade can really damage you so watch out!

Clear out the Grenadiers who fall pretty easy. At the next sector, two Gun
Turrets will shoot rounds at you. Now would be a great time to use that
missile stock. Shoot a missile, and steer it with your Directional Pad. A
direct hit with a single missile should be enough to take one gun down.
Destroy both Gun Turrets and progress. More Soldiers will pop up ahead
followed by two more Gun Turrets. Use missiles and take those down.

Once you clear the second wave of Gun Turrets out, some Jeeps up ahead will
appear. They look similar to you except for the fact that they are yellow.
The enemy Jeeps also move a lot faster so shoot them out. Don't be discouraged
if they take down more of your life meter than you'd like. It's a pretty big
team of Jeeps so take caution. Once that wave is gone, some Grenadiers will
appear up ahead. You know what to do; rip their bodies to shreds. Up ahead,
the final defense system blocks your exit.

Boss Fight : Defense Cannons ~
    =--------------------------=
You have three targets. The first two are the big guns shooting
explosive rounds at you. The third is the actual body of the Defense
Cannon. The body is armed with a single gun position. You can tell
where the Cannon shoots as a small crater appears before the
rounds blows the ground up. Missiles won't work this time. Use your
machine gun to rain fire on the platform as best as you can. Keep
moving to avoid the large Cannon rounds. After a lot of fire, it
         will be destroyed.

Once the Defense Cannons are offline, you can exit the base into the jungle.
Uh oh.

+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+
        4.2. Stage II                                                 [4200]
+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+

                    ~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~
Jungle -- Jump across the cliffs.
                    ~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~

Now that we're out of the base, the game turns to a more jungle-like area. At
first, you'll be seeing some Soldiers and Grenadiers plus a few Helicopters
flying around. The Soldiers should be easy, but the Helicopters can only be
taken down with a well-placed missile. Because of that, I'd suggest
concentrating your fire on the troops on the ground as getting a good hit on
those choppers can be tough.

Not too far into the level is a river. To jump across it, you need to find the
ramp in the center. Position yourself so that when you hit the cliff, you'll
ride off the ramp over the chasm to the other side. It's really pretty self-
explanatory. However, do make sure that you are going at full speed when you
hit the ramp or else you'll fall short of your mark losing a life. On the far
side, clear out a few Soldiers and Grenadiers along with a few Helicopters.

The next open area consists mainly of trees and a bunch of Soldiers. Luckily,
they are weak. Enjoy the momentary lapse in Helicopter strikes. When they
begin to flow in again, prepare yourself to jump another river. Clear out any
pesky Helicopters with missiles if the situation sees fit. Go full speed up
the next ramp to the other side. For the next few minutes, Jeeps might ram you
from the back. When you see these, immediately get out of their way and shoot
them.

Occasionally, some Supply Trucks might ram you from the back as well. When you
see these, shoot them immediately to blow them up. Usually, they hold missiles
or other goodies you could use. As the situation grows more hectic, keep
moving around and shoot down any stray Helicopters or mow down remaining
Jeeps. Through the foliage, you might find some Grenadiers chucking grenades
your way. Despite the trees, they are still easily taken out.

Eventually, after riding through a bunch of trees with Jeeps attempting to
ram you, a third chasm will appear. Get ready to jump it through use of the
ramp. At the other end, the music will change... Boss time!

Boss Fight : Armored Helicopter ~
    =-----------------------------=
You are fighting a large chopper with a bunch of guns. While on the
ground, you can't damage it. However, as you progress along, take
advantage of the ramps and use them to get into the air. While above
the ground, use your guns to try to shoot as many bullets into the
Armored Helicopter as possible. When you aren't in the air, missiles
still do a pretty good job. However, don't waste them using them
only when needed. Also as you move, some parachuting machine guns
might attack you. You can still ignore them, but if they pose a
problem, shoot them down with missiles.

With the Armored Helicopter defeated, you have officially cleared Stage II.
Whee...!

+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+
        4.3. Stage III                                                [4300]
+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+

                    ~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-
River -- Watch out for whirlpools.
                    ~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-

Hey guess what, you're on water! On your multitasking vehicle, begin to move
forward through the water where some Aqua Soldiers wlil begin to attack you.
A few seconds into the level, a souped up Attack Helicopter will begin to
engage your position. These are cleared out with missiles easily. Watch out
for the whirlpools that generate in the water. You don't want to get snagged
by one of those. A red bridge will show itself up ahead. Luckily, it breaks
down before you crash into it.

Slowly progress through various Attack Helicopters after the fallen bridge.
More Aqua Soldiers will pop up through the waterline. The pathline through the
water is full of whirlpools. If you lose your balance in one, the enemies
have a clear shot at you. After a good minute of moving forward, you will hit
another bridge. Let it break down ahead of you and advance. A Supply Boat
will possibly strike you from the rear. Shoot it for a treat.

A new sight will appear up ahead. Move upward and avoid the Fighter Jet's
torpedoes as they fall toward you. Along with that, a group of Water Mines
also occupy the right side of the screen. They can't be destroyed so don't
even try to touch them. After two groups of those Water Mines, more Aqua
Soldiers will pop up. Attack Helicopters still rule the skies so use an
adequate amount of missiles to take each and every one down.

After clearing that area, the boss of the River appears just ahead. Get ready
to fight the uglified Battleship. It's really a two part fight!

    Boss Fight : Battleship ~
    =---------------------=
There's not too much to describe for this battle against a demon of
the seas. The Battleship is armed with a few guns plus a missile
launcher that homes in on you. The five guns shouldn't pose too much
of a threat as they are easily avoided. The missile, on the other
hand, has a much higher chance of hitting you. Sweep from side to
side to hopefully avoid the fire long enough to get enough hits in
on the Battleship. After a while, you will have sunken it.

    Boss Fight : Submarine ~
    =--------------------=
After you sink their Battleship, something else will pick up where
it left off. The Submarine is considerably easier than the
Battleship. Although it moves much faster, its single torpedo
launcher isn't homing and is very easy to avoid. However, if the
Submarine dives before you can destroy it, it will use it's main
cannons to try to take you out. Keep your trigger on it, and the
         Submarine dies.

The River is now cleared. However, our escape from the area is far from over.
Let's get to it.

+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+
        4.4. Stage IV                                                 [4400]
+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+

                     ~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-
                      Canyon -- Danger! Falling rocks.
                     ~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-

Now that we're out of the water, our next locale is very rocky indeed. Toward
your left, there are falling rocks from the cliffs. In the distance, Gun Posts
will begin to rain fire in your direction. Use missiles to take them down
before they shoot you. After they are down, one or two Jeeps will drive at
your rear. Move up so they can't ram you for damage. A Supply Truck has a
chance of ramming you to. Pick up whatever it drops.

As the area begins to widen up a little bit, Bazooka Soldiers will line up
ahead of you. Use evasive maneuvers to avoid their fire and draw your own to
take them out. At the next sector, more Gun Posts will shoot bullets in your
direction. At the same time, falling boulders will drop from the left. Be
wary of both threats. take out the Gun Posts as quickly as possible with a
well-placed missile for each.

The canyons on the left and right will begin to recede and some Helicopters
will fly in. Once again, Helicopters are easily taken down with missiles. If
you would rather avoid their fire than actually trying to shoot them down, do
that. A number of Soldiers also will run in, but their resistance falls to
your gunner.

That marks the end of the level and incoming boss fight. A plane will appear
ahead of you.

Boss Fight : Red Bomber ~
    =---------------------=
As you move forward, the Red Bomber will attempt to drop bombs while
keeping a constant array of fire on you as well. This battle is
similar to the one you fought back in the Jungle. At first, there
are no ramps so you'll have to use missiles to damage the Red
Bomber. Eventually, ramps will appear on the ground. Use them to
launch yourself into the air and rain fire upon the flying thing.
Avoid its bombs and shoot down the plane.

With the destruction of that, Stage IV is now complete. Now we go to the
desert.

+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+
        4.5. Stage V                                                  [4500]
+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+

                    ~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-
                     Desert -- Avoid incoming missiles.
                    ~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-

Here's a nice change in gameplay. As Jack, you are now flying in a chopper
across the desert. Before, you needed missiles to hit air targets. Now you
need to use your missiles against ground targets and your main gun versus
air targets. The controls remain intact so get a feel for the game as you
sail across the sky.

You start off the level in the middle of a crossfire. On the ground are
Battle Tanks with Gun Turrets on the upper levels. I'd suggest ignoring the
ground targets for now as the Gun Turrets will cause you enough problems as
it is. If you absolutely need to, release your missiles to hit the Battle
Tanks. While flying through this chaotic area, Missile Jets will also appear.
Avoid the homing missiles they shoot in your direction.

After sailing for a few seconds, the game speed will step up a bit as you
rapidly gain speed. For this part of the level, you'll be fighting with
various Missile Jets. It might take a while to understand their tactics.
Basically, they speed in and slow down to release a few homing missiles.
The projectiles themselves work strangely. As soon as they are released, they
hover in one area for a few seconds, then home in on you. Avoid the missiles
as they move in.

Getting through these suicidal kamikaze Missile Jets will be a problem.
Avoid the missiles sticking to the middle of the screen as much as possible.
After a while, your chopper will slow down a little bit. A single Helicopter
will move in. Rip it down with a blast of gun fire. Some Gun Posts will now
shoot at you up ahead. Along with that, Heavy Tanks on the ground will also
be blasting shots in your direction. Missiles are required here so just hope
you have some left.

Boss Fight : Command Ship ~
    =-----------------------=
For such a difficult level, the boss fight is actually pretty easy.
You just need to move around a lot to avoid the Command Ship's many
guns. If you sweep your chopper from the side of the screen to the
other side, none of the guns should hit you. The Command Ship has
quite a bit of stamina so good luck holding your position. When the
boss begins to unleash grenades, that means that it's almost
destroyed. Keep your fire on it a bit longer to finally bring it
         down.

That's it for the Desert. The final frontier is just up ahead. Prepare for
Stage VI and the Enemy Fortress.

+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+
        4.6. Stage VI                                                 [4600]
+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+

               ~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~
Enemy Fortress -- Destroy the enemy fortress.
               ~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~

Being the last level of the game, you can expect Stage VI to be difficult.
However, defeating it will gain you freedom and of course, winning the game.
You start off back in your chopper in a grassy area. Up ahead, Apaches and
Missile Jets will begin to shoot at you. As you enter the foliage area, Camo
Soldiers will also take quick shots at you. After a few more seconds, Missile
Jets will actually pop out of silos in the trees to ambush you! Catch them
by surprise and shoot them down before they have a chance.

Pretty soon, you'll reach the building itself. There are various Gun Posts
along the rooftops and Missile Jets flying around everywhere. After passing
by a few of them, more Apaches will zip by raining you with gun fire.
Progress over the area through a railroad section. For the first few moments,
Apaches will be the only ones to really engage you. Eventually, some Train
Tanks will also appear. Use missiles to destroy them.

For the most part, the area consists of Train Tanks, Apaches, and eventually
some Plasma Jets. The latter will fly by you and release some plasma bolts to
burn through your chopper. As the trainyard ends and grass mixed with dirt
begins to occupy the ground, the music will stop. You guessed it...

It's the boss. And being the final boss of the game, he sure is one toughie of
a boss.

Boss Fight : Enemy Fortress ~
    =-------------------------=
The Enemy Fortress consists of a few main guns plus a bunch of
flying things. First, concentrate your machine gun fire on the blue
aircraft flying around. Destroy those to lighten the amount of fire
being put in your direction. Now this is where it gets a bit more
open ended. Fly around your chopper to avoid the shots coming from
the turrets on the platform. At the same time, keep your gun
occupied firing against the turrets. Concentrate on one gun at a
time. Eventually, the platform will be defeated.

===============================================================================
    --- 5. Enemy Listing ---                                          [5000]
===============================================================================

Below is a list of all the generic enemies you'll be fighting throughout Line
Of Fire. They are listed in the order of appearance.

[-----------------------------------------------------------------------------]

    Soldier ~
    =-----=
These Soldiers are the standard grunts and cannon fodder. Though
very easy to kill off in small numbers, they can still overwhelm
you in larger groups. Watch out for Soldier gatherings and kill them
         as necessary.

    Shielded Soldier ~
    =--------------=
The Shielded Soldier has a lot more stamina than normal Soldiers.
With the addition of his shield, he's almost impossible to kill
when the shield is up. Wait for him to shoot and then blast his
         vulnerable body with bullets.

    Grenadier ~
    =-------=
Grenadiers are all in all, Soldiers with grenade throwing
capabilities. These Grenadiers throw big, green things that are
very easy to notice. A direct hit can damage you pretty heavily
         so watch out.

    Gun Turret ~
    =--------=
Gun Turrets are usually found on ledges blasting stuff in your
direction. They can only destroyed with a missile. One is usually
         enough to destroy these.

    Jeep ~
    =--=
Jeeps are basically cars with guns. They are similar to your car
except they don't bear rocket launchers. The Jeeps are also much
faster than you. A few shots is usually enough to blow a Jeep up
though they have considerably more stamina than a standard Soldier.

    Helicopter ~
    =--------=
Helicopters are flying behemoths armed with a single machine gun.
However, they are in the air so conventional machine guns of your
own cannot affect them. Use missiles to take these flying things
         down.

    Supply Truck ~
    =----------=
Occasionally, random trucks might appear. Shoot them to maybe show
special items you might find valuable.

    Aqua Soldiers ~
    =-----------=
In areas where there is water, you'll find the water-based version
of normal Soldiers. Aqua Soldiers, when submerged, appear as darker
blue marks. When they emmerge, they can shoot at you so watch out!
Even so, these are still easily defeated.

    Attack Helicopter ~
    =---------------=
The Attack Helicopter is a much more rugged type of chopper armed
with dual missile slots. When engaging these, watch out for their
shots and keep in mind that these do more damage than the regular
         Helicopters.

    Supply Boat ~
    =---------=
These Supply Boats work exactly the same way as Supply Trucks. They
only appear in water obviously. Shoot them to reveal goodies to aid
         your offensive.

    Fighter Jet ~
    =---------=
These are fairly noticeable as they hover and drop torpedoes on you.
Their weaponry are easily avoided. Watch out when they attack you
         in larger numbers.

    Water Mine ~
    =--------=
Standard-issue depth charges activated by touch. Don't even try to
shoot them as they cannot be destroyed. Try to avoid them by moving
to the other side of the screen.

    Gun Post ~
    =------=
Gun Posts fire weaker shots than Gun Turrets, but they have a faster
rate of fire. Take them down with missiles before they get too many
         shots on you.

    Bazooka Soldiers ~
    =--------------=
These stationary Bazooka Soldiers have a bit more stamina than
regular soldiers. However, their weapon is much more powerful. Watch
out when you see them, but take advantage of their statioanry
         position.

    Battle Tank ~
    =---------=
Battle Tanks are ground units with pretty big guns. Luckily, they
are quickly destroyed with a single missile. Direct hits will
         blow them up.

    Missile Jet ~
    =---------=
Very fast and very deadly. Missile Jets like to fly up by you and
send missiles toward you from the rear. If you can possibly shoot
them down before they fire at you, take it!

    Heavy Tank ~
    =--------=
Very high stamina + high rate of fire = ownage. Seriously, you
want to knock these Heavy Tanks out of commission as quickly as
possible before they deal too much damage.

    Apache ~
    =----=
In terms of helicopters, Apaches are the real deal. They are fast
and are difficult to take down. In the air, they shoot machine guns
at you with the capability to rip you apart. Be afraid. Be very
         afraid.

    Camo Soldier ~
    =----------=
Camo Soldiers like to hide out in the foliage and trees while
popping their gun up to shoot you occasionally. You can still see
their ripples in the leaves so kill them when you have the chance.

    Train Tank ~
    =--------=
On the rails of the railyards, Train Tanks will occasionally zip by
to get a few shots on your Apache. They can be denied with a few
         missiles to destroy each car.

    Plasma Jet ~
    =--------=
The Plasma Jets use similar strategies to the Missile Jet. They
first fly in front of you, and then release their weapon stock on
your position. Plasma Jets release waves of plasma to burn you
         off.

    --- 6. Boss Listing ---                                           [6000]
===============================================================================

Below is a list of all the bosses you'll be fighting throughout Line Of Fire.

[-----------------------------------------------------------------------------]

    Defense Cannons ~
    =-------------=
You have three targets. The first two are the big guns shooting
explosive rounds at you. The third is the actual body of the Defense
Cannon. The body is armed with a single gun position. You can tell
where the Cannon shoots as a small crater appears before the
rounds blows the ground up. Missiles won't work this time. Use your
machine gun to rain fire on the platform as best as you can. Keep
moving to avoid the large Cannon rounds. After a lot of fire, it
         will be destroyed.

    Armored Helicopter ~
    =----------------=
You are fighting a large chopper with a bunch of guns. While on the
ground, you can't damage it. However, as you progress along, take
advantage of the ramps and use them to get into the air. While above
the ground, use your guns to try to shoot as many bullets into the
Armored Helicopter as possible. When you aren't in the air, missiles
still do a pretty good job. However, don't waste them using them
only when needed. Also as you move, some parachuting machine guns
might attack you. You can still ignore them, but if they pose a
problem, shoot them down with missiles.

    Battleship ~
    =--------=
There's not too much to describe for this battle against a demon of
the seas. The Battleship is armed with a few guns plus a missile
launcher that homes in on you. The five guns shouldn't pose too much
of a threat as they are easily avoided. The missile, on the other
hand, has a much higher chance of hitting you. Sweep from side to
side to hopefully avoid the fire long enough to get enough hits in
on the Battleship. After a while, you will have sunken it.

    Submarine ~
    =-------=
After you sink their Battleship, something else will pick up where
it left off. The Submarine is considerably easier than the
Battleship. Although it moves much faster, its single torpedo
launcher isn't homing and is very easy to avoid. However, if the
Submarine dives before you can destroy it, it will use it's main
cannons to try to take you out. Keep your trigger on it, and the
         Submarine dies.

    Red Bomber ~
    =--------=
As you move forward, the Red Bomber will attempt to drop bombs while
keeping a constant array of fire on you as well. This battle is
similar to the one you fought back in the Jungle. At first, there
are no ramps so you'll have to use missiles to damage the Red
Bomber. Eventually, ramps will appear on the ground. Use them to
launch yourself into the air and rain fire upon the flying thing.
Avoid its bombs and shoot down the plane.

    Command Ship ~
    =----------=
For such a difficult level, the boss fight is actually pretty easy.
You just need to move around a lot to avoid the Command Ship's many
guns. If you sweep your chopper from the side of the screen to the
other side, none of the guns should hit you. The Command Ship has
quite a bit of stamina so good luck holding your position. When the
boss begins to unleash grenades, that means that it's almost
destroyed. Keep your fire on it a bit longer to finally bring it
         down.

    Enemy Fortress ~
    =------------=
The Enemy Fortress consists of a few main guns plus a bunch of
flying things. First, concentrate your machine gun fire on the blue
aircraft flying around. Destroy those to lighten the amount of fire
being put in your direction. Now this is where it gets a bit more
open ended. Fly around your chopper to avoid the shots coming from
the turrets on the platform. At the same time, keep your gun
occupied firing against the turrets. Concentrate on one gun at a
time. Eventually, the platform will be defeated.
