INTRODUCTION
===============================================================================
Hello and welcome to the World Soccer FAQ. This handy text document will tell
you how to play this game, and some hints and tips on the main game itself and
on taking penalties.
I advise that if you have little experience in playing football games that you
go to Game Overview to see overall controls and methods of playing. However if
you just want a shortlist of hint and tips then go to the Hints and Tips
section.

The first complete version of this FAQ. Everything is complete.

2. GAME OVERVIEW
===============================================================================
This section is just a look over all things in the game, such as the controls,
and generally how to play the game.
Controls
--------
D-Pad - Moves selected player / takes penalty kick
Button I - Kicks, Shoots, Goal Kicks
Button II - Passing, Throw-ins, Corners, Goal passes
Rules
-----
The rules are the standard rules of soccer, with some adjustments. There is
corner kicks, throw-ins, and even the offside rule (although it rarely occurs).
However as you cannot foul the other players or handle the ball, there are no
free kicks UNLESS it's offside (which again rarely happens). If you don't know
the rules of soccer, then play the game for a while and you should pick it up
(it's very simple) otherwise check out the following links -

Controlling players
-------------------
Just a quick note about the highlighted players. You are assuming control of
the player with the red arrow and black outline that is above him. Other
players are automatically controlled. It is switched when a different player
is closer to the ball. However when you get the ball there are two different
types of arrow that appear; on the player with the ball the arrow is of a red
colour and a black outline, and the supporting player has just a plain red
arrow above them. This is the player that you will pass to if you choose to
pass the ball. To change the supporting player, then with the controlling
player change direction so that you are facing the player you want to pass to,
then he will have the plain arrow above him. Remember that when any player has
the ball, you have control of that player.
However with goal keepers it's a different matter. When the opposing team is
on the attack and your goal is in view, you automatically assume control of
the goal keeper. This means that you have to make the save yourself. Simply
approach the ball or stop the ball to collect it; then you can select a player
and pass it to them.
Tackling
--------
Whenever you don't have the ball you have the opportunity to tackle the player
with the ball in a bid to regain possession. To tackle, simply approach the
player and you will tackle automatically. Nice. Better yet, you cannot foul,
so go wild! Whenever you don't have the ball keep chasing the ball and
tackling players to get it back.
Dribbling
---------
When a player has the ball then by using the D-Pad they can dribble with the
ball (aka. moving with the ball). Do this to get into better positions to pass,
kick or just to avoid or get past some opposing players. However, I personally
wouldn't do a Ronaldo (the Portuguese one, not the Brazilian goof troop) where
you show off your fancy skills and take on the other team on your own. As you
can get tackled easily in this game, when you get the ball pass it as soon as
you can - however of course dribble into a better position for passing or
shooting, but make sure that no player remains on the ball for a long period
of time.
Passing
-------
It is crucial that you pass a lot in this game. As dribbling for long periods
of time often spells disaster (and the other team getting the ball) passing is
a far safer and easier way of getting the ball up the pitch. When you have the
ball then face the player you wish to pass to and press Button II. If you want
to pass to a different player then face that player and pass to them. If you
cannot pass then the other player hasn't been highlighted. See the 'Controlling
players' section above more advice on how to control players.
Kicking
-------
This means to clear the ball toward the opponents goal. By pressing Button I
the player will kick the ball in the direction of the opponents goal,
regardless of position. This is very handy for clearing the ball away from
your own box.
Shooting
--------
Shooting is what gets you goals, and sadly it's quite tricky to pull off. When
you are in range of goal, a white arrow appears in front of the goal and
whenever you move up or down, so does the arrow. This allows you to aim where
you want the ball to be placed and sadly this is an absolute pain the arse
(Three Lions, anyone?). If can disappear also if the goal is blocked; if this
is the case then pass it to a team mate. So I would try and keep an eye on
both your player and the arrow and aim accordingly then shoot, or just
concentrate on the white arrow and shoot, or as soon as you can just shoot and
hope it goes in. It really is quite tough, but try to get away from any
other players, quickly aim into a good spot that the goalkeeper cannot get to,
shoot, and hope for the best.
You can also do an overhead kick by shooting straight after being passed to
and being in the box. A smooth move.
Throw-in, Corner or Goal Kick
-----------------------------
Whenever there is a throw-in, corner or goal kick (a dead ball situation) then
you have to pass the ball to one of your team mates. An arrow will appear over
the closest players or those you can pass to. You can change this by using the
D-Pad; by pressing Button II you can then pass to that selected player.
Goalkeeping
-----------
When the opposing team is on the attack and your goal is in view, you
automatically assume control of the goal keeper. This means that you have to
make the save yourself. Simply approach the ball or stop the ball to collect
it; then you can select a player and pass it to them (a 'goal kick' so to
speak).
Penalties
---------
Penalty kicks occur when the game goes into sudden death, or if you select to
play it from the menu. This is where the two teams take it in turns to shoot
balls at the goal from the spot (in the box). A total of five kicks are
taken (in turns); however if one team cannot come back before five kicks
are taken then the leading team wins. If it's a tie after five kicks then the
penalties keep going in turns until there is a winner.
There are two ways to kick the ball. Simply pressing the D-Pad on it's own will
only shoot within the inside area of the goal. However pressing Button I and
the D-Pad together means that you hit the ball harder so it goes to the
outside areas of the goal. The same applies if you are the goalkeeper; just
the D-Pad for the inner area, and the D-Pad and Button I for the outer areas
of the goal.
When attacking, try alternating your positions that you are aiming at. A good
idea is also to go for the same place twice after one another to fool the
goalkeeper. As the goalkeeper, always decide you move when the whistle blows -
you don't have time to see where the ball will go when it's kicked. So
basically you have to guess. I have noticed though that most of the time
the computer tends to go for the far right of the net.

3. HINTS AND TIPS
===============================================================================
• Tackle the opposition constantly when they have the ball.
• When the ball is in the air, try and keep track of it and move toward it.
• Try not to dribble a lot, instead, do lots of short passes.
• Use the Button I kick to clear the ball away if you are in danger.
• It is hard to shoot; so either totally focus on where the arrow is and shoot
when that is correct, or shoot when the goal is in sight (there is a chance
that the goalie will be off guard).
• You can in fact time waste in this game! Whenever there is a dead ball
situation (Throw-in, Corner or Goal Kick) or when you have paused the game
the timer will still count down regardless. Great when you are winning
against your mates and you want to try and keep it that way. ;)
• For penalties, it can be quite tough to score or save the goal. Either
base your decision on what the other team is like (your mates will always
have flaws in their plan) or just go in a random direction or whatever.
