Tips for "Space Hulk: Vengeance" for Sega Saturn (and other consoles)
--Use Withdrawl command! This isn't just for retreat! The Terminators at
the rear of your squad will lay down 'eavy metal while protecting your
softest point. Make sure all of the corridors are covered
-- take flamers off of Overwatch (the eyeball icon). this will allow you
to preciselyand quickly move the flamers into position and keep them
from bumping into Storm Bolter Terminators and causing havoc on your
front lines. Flamers on overwatch will pause and turn toward enemies but
won't fire, making their movement jerky and annoying. This command is
especially important when you get a lot of marines in tight corridors
with flamers getting into your way while digging in, i.e. when you get
up to and past "Barren".
-- Use Sustained Fire-- In the Space Hulk board game using sustained
fire (more than one turn of shooting) increases your chances to kill
(not just hit) a Genestealer. I've noticed in the game that some
Genestealers will just not die with one or two shots, causing you to
enter deadly hand-to-hand combat, which you have a pretty good chance of
losing, even if you are a bad mamma jamma. Plugging a Genestealer with 4
or 5 REALLY quick shots pretty much will kill 100% and will not jam your
bolter if you pause between bursts. I haven't tried a controller with
turbo but I would bet it would increase kills.
-- Close and Hose. Don't let those pesky aliens invade big rooms. Learn
to use the slow turn key to hose down larger rooms with Storm Boltery
goodness (the L key + D pad on Saturn). Sweep the room slowly back and
forth using slow turn is an effective tactic if you are alone in front
and confronted by a host of Genestealers.
-- Gang up. Use pairs of marines in wider rooms and corridors, their
combined firepower will usually be sufficient for holding a point and
keeping it withoout losses.
-- Sequester Flamers. Your flamers are effective but weak because they
cannot bust a cap into anything that moves, keep them in the middle of
your formation until the time is ripe to "Cleanse this area with the
purifying power of flame"
-- Experience. Nothing beats experience in combat. Nothing. Any general
will tell you. Try to keep all of your marines alive in the earlier
missions (I usually don't save unless I take no casualties) to boost
their experience meters. These marines will eventually become mean
machines that you can trust to hold down a corridor with no backup (they
are more effective in hand-to-hand and therefore will be better at
holding positions where Overwatch fire isn't as effective). Evaluate
your positions in later missions and put your best marines (if they
aren't randomly assigned flamer duty [which pisses me off!]) on the
toughest corridors.
-- Honor the Throne. YOU are the best of the best of the best. You are a
Terminator Sarge or Captain and therefore are expected to bust through
those really tough lines yourself and hold down that especially nasty
corridor. Don't be afraid to kick butt yourself because you are a more
effective fighter than all of your troops put together.
-- Use Coverfire. The follow/cover fire is the best tactic to use when
you want your marines to bypass an area quickly. Lead or lay down cover
fire for a line of marines following each other single file to move past
rough areas.
-- Use the Map. You map skills will be essential for completing
missions at higher levels. Some maps I will never use my Terminators
view unless in the middle of a fight because I'm too busy moving my
troops. Leaarn to use the map with the freeze time off (L key + X key on
Saturn , I think) , it is really effective for maneuvering a tough
retreat or advance that you aren't leading yourself. Also learn to cycle
backwards and forwards through the commands and to use the cursor to
select a marine that you want to issue commands to. these methods are
much quicker than cycling through the menus! Don't be afraid to hunker
down in your current position while the map clears of enemies, but try
to keep moving. A fluidly moving squad is more survivable because your
marines have less time to miss a shot and enter into deadly hand-to-hand
combat.
-- Chaos bad! DO NOT enter hand-to-hand combat with Chaos Marines. They
will kick your booty every time. Seriously. Try it and see. Their armor
is fat and they need to be ganged up on to kill efffectively. Approach
their kind with extreme caution and call in the heavy backup. Put lots
of shots on them from several marines and don't get too close. They are
killable by yourself but be careful not to jam your bolter.
Challenges: turn up the difficulty, allow no casualties, or don't use
flamers in missions to make them really challenging. Think you are a Bad
Mo-Fo? Try finishing Barren with no flamers and no casualties. I bet you
can't do it in ten or even twenty tries! It took me a couple months!
