3. GAME OVERVIEW
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
--- 3.1. GENERAL ---
Pro Evolution Soccer 5 is arguably the best football game
on PSP at present. Although some of the features from
other platforms have been removed due to UMD limitations,
it's advanced gameplay engine and realistic AI make
gameplay incredible, with the PS2 Version getting a
perfect 10/10 from Official PlayStation 2 Magazine UK.
--- 3.2. SAVING GAME DATA ---
Saving game data requires a Memory Stick Duo with a
minimum of 1280KB free space to save the option file.
Other data such as league progress or replays require
further memory so it's good to have at least 3MB free
space on your Memory Stick Duo.
The Main Menu is the first thing to appear after loading
the game (apart from language selection) and has 6 options
on it: Match, League, Training, Edit, Options, Wireless.
--- 4.2. PAUSE ---
The Pause Menu will appear when you press the Start Button
during a match. This menu has 14 options on it: Resume
Match, Formation Settings, Select Kicker, Change Player,
Player Settings, Camera Type, Screen Settings, Sound
Settings, Button Configuration, Command List, Replay and
Quit Match. You can only access Select Kicker when you are
taking a corner, free kick, peanlty etc. You can only
access Replay after you have scored, taken a corner, taken
a free kick etc.
to view Player Settings, Team Selection, Strip Selection,
General Settings, and Formation Settings beforehand.
--- 5.2. QUICK START ---
In a quick start match, you are only allowed to view Team
Selection, Strip Selection and Formation Settings
beforehand.
--- 5.3. PENALTIES ---
Penalties bring you to a penalty shootout where you are
allowed to view Player Settings, Team Selection, Strip
Selection, General Settings and Formation Settings
beforehand.
6. LEAGUE
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
--- 6.1. NEW GAME ---
Clicking on New Game allows you to start a new league by
taking you to the General Settings of the League.
--- 6.2. LOAD DATA ---
Clicking on Load Data allows you to continue with a
previous league that you have saved.
--- 6.3. GENERAL ---
A league can either be a Half Season or Full Season and in
Pro Evolution Soccer 5 there are 7 leagues to choose from.
In the General Settings when you are choosing your league,
you can change the type of league, whether it is a
full/half season, what teams are eligible teams, the number
of teams in the league, match time, difficulty, whether
injuries are ON/OFF, whether players accumulate fatigue,
whether you can change your strip before a match and if
auto save is ON/OFF. It also allows you to change the ball
type and turn ball effect ON/OFF.

7. TRAINING
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
--- 7.1. NORMAL TRAINING ---
Basically, a one sided match without an opposition (except
the goalkeeper). If the ball goeas over the goal line then
it's a corner. If the ball goes over a sideline then it's
a throw in. If a goal is scored, it's a corner. Usually,
if the goalkeeper gets the ball he will clear it.
--- 7.2. SHOOT ---
In shot training, you position the ball on the pitch and
then get layed off for a shot at the goal.
--- 7.3. FREE KICK ---
In free kick training, you position the ball on the pitch
and then have an attempt at a free kick with a defensive
wall and players in the box.
--- 7.4. LEFT SIDE CORNER KICK ---
When you are taking a left side corner kick there are no
defending players in the box so it is easier to practice
manoeuvers and tricks.
--- 7.5. RIGHT SIDE CORNER KICK ---
When you are taking a right side corner kick there are no
defending players in the box so it is easier to practice
manoeuvres and tricks.
Edit an existing player. First, choose the team that player
belongs to and then select the player you wish to edit. You
can change: Player name, Basic Settings, Position, Ability
and Special ability of that player.
--- 8.2. REGISTER PLAYER ---
Here you can register players you have bought from the PES
Shop to National or Club Teams.
--- 8.3. EDIT TEAM ---
Here you can change the formations of all teams, and the
names and emblems of a few other teams in Other Leagues A
and other Leagues B.
--- 8.4. EDIT PLAYER NUMBER ---
Change the number of an existing player. First choose the
team that player belongs to and then select the player
whoes number you wish to change.
--- 8.5. SAVE DATA MANAGEMENT ---
Here, you can save, load and copy the edit data to the
option file.
--- 8.6. END EDITING ---
Quit Edit and return to Mode Select. After editing, when
you select End Editing, the Option File auto saves.
This is where you can load or save an Option File ad turn
auto save ON/OFF.
--- 9.2. PLAYSTATION 2 DATA LINK ---
This is where you can transfer data from your PS2 copy of
Pro Evolution Soccer 5 to your PSP version using USB Link
Cable (mini B type, sold separately)
--- 9.3. BUTTON CONFIGURATION ---
Change what the buttons do, ie change X Button to shoot
and Square Button to short pass.
--- 9.4. SOUND SETTINGS ---
Here you can change Music Volume and Sound Effects Volume
by pressing left (quiet) or right (loud) on the bar.
--- 9.5. MUSEUM ---
Here you can Playback Replays, watch the Credits and
listen to BGM (Background Music) If you have purchased it
from the PES Shop.
--- 9.6. PES SHOP ---
Here you can but extras to enhance gameplay and view how
many PES you have. You can also turn on PES auto save and
toggle display when PES are earned ON/OFF.
When Battery Life Settings are turned on, they reduce the
amount of battery drain by turning of music and sound
effects. Great for if you are travelling and don't want to
waste battery.
--- 9.8. LANGUAGE ---
Here you can choose between English, Francais, Deutsch,
Italiano and Espanol as the language for in-game text.
New Game takes you to the Wireless Mode and allows you to:
Create player file, Save data, change auto save settings
and return to Mode Select.
--- 10.2. LOAD DATA ---
Load Game allows you to load a previously created player
profile that you have saved.
--- 10.3. GENERAL ---
Wireless Mode makes it possible for you to play against
other playeers who own the game (and a PSP) via Adhoc mode.
All you need to do is create a player profile and start
the match. Wireless Mode can be really enjoyable if you
have a friend that will play with you.
To perform "dummy shots" press either Square Button or
Circle Button depending on whether you want to dummy a
long pass or shot pass and right after you have pressed it
(or held it down) quickly tap X Button and your player
will carry on dribbling with the ball, sometimes fooling
your opponent.
To perform "step overs" while running, quickly tap L 3
times or more depending on how many step overs you wish to
do.
To perform a "random trick" while standing still, quickly
tap R 3 times and your player will do a random trick and
usually beat his opponent.
--- 11.2. ATTACKING ---
A good strategy for attacking is to sprint down the pitch
in a curved shape which lowers the chances of you being
tackled by a defender. You can then run (not sprint) from
the side towards the goals diagonally and just as the
goalkeeper starts to charge , pass the ball along the goal
line for another one of your players to slot it in.
--- 11.3. DEFENDING ---
A good strategy for defending is to hold down X + Square +
R so that the two closest player to the opponent with the
ball sprint towards him and apply pressure. Used right,
this method can be extremely effective and makes it almost
impossible for your oponent to break through. However,
using this technique often creates free kicks which your
opponent can score from.
Because this is the first Public Release, I haven't
recieved any questions so if you have any send them in.
(Contact Information 14.1.)
Q. When I try to save my Option File it says "Not Enough
space on Memory Stick Duo"
A. This basically means your Memory Stick Duo wher you
save your game data onto it either full, or has less than
1280KB free space.
Q. There is no Background Music or cheering or sound
effects on my game.
A. This be due to on of two things. It can either be that
there is an error in the game (unlikely) or that Battery
Life Settings are turned on. You can change this in the
Options Menu.
Q. When I'm playing wirelessly with a friend the game will
just cut out and the match will end.
A. If the distance between your PSP and your opponents PSP
exceeds the connection range, the match will end.
