Version 1.0

12/04/05: How can a classic game like this not have some kind of a guide? Well,
I intend to remedy that issue with this guide!

10/31/06: Slight update to contact information.

2. HOW TO PLAY THE GAME

It's the year 1999, but we aren't exactly partying.  You see, leaders of the
world are proposing a worldwide peace plan to reduce the fighting and conflict
in the world.  Of course, you know something like that won't come off without
a hitch.  A group of corrupt military commanders have put together their own
army that is armed with the latest in military technology.

They have tanks, supertanks, saucers, and aerial fighters which the evil army
intends to use to slowly take over the world, destroying any oppressors in
their way.

All hope is not lost yet, though.  You have recently discovered an armada of
old military tanks which you can use to take on the evil army's forces.  You've
modified them with an electronic periscope to give you a front view of your
tank, and also added radar that can help you detect incoming enemy forces.
You're gonna need them, as the enemy is ruthless and doesn't believe in the
word surrender!

SETTING UP:

Set up your Atari 2600 or Atari 7800 and plug a joystick into the left
controller jack.  Battlezone is a one player game only.

TV Type and Difficulty Switches aren't used in this game.

The Game Select switch will let you choose the difficulty of game you
wish to play, with the game type indicated by tank icons at the bottom of
the screen.  One tank is beginner gameplay, two is intermediate gameplay,
and three is advanced gameplay.  When you are happy with the game
selection, either press the reset switch or the action button on the
joystick.

PLAYING THE GAME:

When the game starts, you will hear the 1812 Overture play, signalling that
the battle has begun.  After that, two quick beeps will sound, indicating that
the first enemy has appeared on the battlefield.  Your radar at the top of the
screen will tell you the position of the enemy.  You will also notice two
diagonal spots on the radar at the top of the screen.  This section indicates
the front of your tank.  When an enemy (indicated by a dot) is between the
two dots, it is in front of you.  The closer it is to the base of the rotating
line, the closer to your tank it is.

Your joystick allows you to accelerate or go backwards by pushing upward and
downward respectively, while pushing the joystick to the left or right turns
your tank in that direction.  The action button fires a shot from your
cannon.  You can only have one shot on screen at a time, and must wait for
it to either disappear off the screen or hit an enemy before you can fire
another shot.

Your crosshair is a black line in the center of the screen, and it will light
up when you have an enemy directly in your line of fire.

ENEMY FORCES:

The evil army has several means of attacking you and your armada of tanks.
These are:

ENEMY TANKS: Enemy tanks are blue and are the most common enemy encountered
in the game.  They are somewhat slower than your tank, but will not hesitate
to fire upon you if they are given the chance to do so.

SUPERTANKS: Supertanks are like enemy tanks, except their turrets are yellow.
They also move faster than your tank, giving them an advantage over you.
They are also merciless and will not hesitate to shoot once you are in their
sight.

AERIAL FORCES: Aerial forces are yellow and look a little like mosquitoes.
They are very fast and move at you in a zig-zag motion, pulling out of the
way at the last second to move to the side and shoot your tank.  Destroy
them as soon as they appear.  When an aerial force attacks, it will make
a buzzing sound, learn to recognize it.

FLYING SAUCERS: Flying saucers look like blobs, and make a humming sound
when they are in the area.  They don't shoot at you, but they will
attempt to distract you by moving around while giving other enemies a chance
to shoot at you.

3. SCORING INFORMATION

Shooting the enemy forces will award you points as follows:

TANK: 1,000 Points
AERIAL FIGHTER: 2,000 Points
SUPERTANK: 3,000 Points
FLYING SAUCER: 5,000 Points

You start each game with an armada of five tanks, shown on the bottom of the
screen during gameplay.  A bonus tank is awarded at 50,000 points, and another
one at 100,000 points.  Each time an enemy shot hits you, your screen will
scramble up like a television with signal problems, and one tank will be lost.
The game is over when all of your tanks are destroyed.

4. TIPS

-Aerial fighters will always appear in front of you, and when they do, be
ready to shoot them before they get too close.  It's difficult to dodge their
shots since they fire from a close proximity.

-If an enemy tank fires at you, turn your tank away from the shot and move
forward slightly.  However, don't do both at once or you may end up turning
your tank into the shot itself.

-Flying saucers are more of an annoyance than anything, and should only be
dealt with once primary threats are taken care of.  While 5,000 points is
a worthy score in this game, risking a tank for it isn't worth it.

-When dealing with multiple enemies, try to prioritize the closest enemies
first, since you're an easier target for them.

-And, of course, HAVE FUN!

6. CREDITS

There are the credits that you'd feed to an arcade machine, like this one when
it was in the arcades, and then there are the credits for those who helped with
a project like this, so here goes:

-My mother, for buying the Atari 2600 and passing her love for it onto me.
-The unknown programmer at Atari who did such a great port of this game.
-Jeff 'CJayC' Veasey, for providing us writers with a place to share our work.
-Atari, for putting out the Atari 2600 as well as this game in both the arcade
and on the Atari 2600.
-AtariAge (www.AtariAge.com,) for the information I needed to make this guide
so everything would be accurate.
-And of course, I can't do it without this final person, whom I always save
for last since they're the best, it's YOU, for reading my guide!
