1. INTRODUCTION
This is an FAQ for Xenosaga Episode II: Jenseits von Gut und Bose. It deals
with Double Techs, semi-secret skills that are new to the Xenosaga series.
Double Techs are what they sound like - techniques performed by two
characters at the same time for big damage and/or other effects. This FAQ
will list the double techs in the game as well as how to obtain them.
Double techs require Stock to use. Each double tech is listed with a stock
requirement - most require 2. This means that to perform the double tech,
each character involved must have 2 or more stock. In order to actually
perform the tech, one character must be the current active turn, and the
other must boost. Thus, double techs consume a certain number of stock
per character and one boost. Each double tech can only be used once per
battle.
Double techs also exist on the ES, where they take a slightly different
form. Each of the three ESs in the game has a 'main' pilot - the ES
Asher has Jr., the ES Dinah has KOS-MOS, and the ES Zebulun has MOMO. Each
ES also has a copilot, and who the copilot is determine what double techs
that ES can use. ES Double Techs require Energy Charge (EC) to use (boost
is not necessary). Every attack an ES performs gives 25 EC; using Stock
gives 100 EC. Unlike character double techs, ES double techs can be used
as many times per battle as desired.
This FAQ makes use of SJIS encoding in order to display Japanese
characters. I included this feature so that if you do not know
Japanese, you can easily match up the characters on your TV screen
to the characters in this guide. You will need to have support for
viewing Japanese characters on your computer, however. Certain versions
of Windows should have it built in; otherwise, you'll either need to
get a program like NJStar Communicator, or you'll need to get
Japanese character support for Internet Explorer (free from Microsoft)
and open this file in IE instead of Notepad/Wordpad.
2. CHARACTER DOUBLE TECHS
In the first few battles in the game, you'll receive a quick tutorial on
the game's battle system. At one point you'll be introduced to double
techs, where Jin and Chaos's double tech, Hyoumonken, will be displayed.
This is the only double tech in the game that you get for free. All others
must be obtained by completing specific G2 Campaign missions or by getting
and using certain rare items from bosses. Each double tech listed here
will explain how to earn that double tech.
Gravity Fist 重力拳
Shion and KOS-MOS
Stock: 2
This tech causes physical, bashing damage to one enemy. As an added bonus,
it can cause L Slow status on them, making it slightly more useful than
most of the other techs. Learning this double tech requires you to obtain
the New Double Tech Awakening Book Two 新二人技覚醒書弐, which is a rare
steal from Orguia, the boss in the Ormus Stronghold.
Duo Buster デュオバスター
Shion and KOS-MOS
Stock: 3
This tech causes ether beam damage to one enemy. The damage can be huge
against enemies weak against beam, but it's a pity that it costs 3 stock
and yet only hits one enemy. To learn this double tech, you must complete
G2 Campaign #36, which basically requires finishing ALL of the other G2
Campaign missions, then speaking to Valtell ヴァルテル in Second Miltia City
Sector 2.
Angelic Requiem 大天使の鎮魂歌
Shion and Jr.
Stock: 2
This tech causes physical piercing damage to all enemies. Rather nice for
taking out large groups of humanoids, who tend to be weak against pierce.
To learn this double tech, you must complete G2 Campaign #5. This mission
is assigned by Jun ジュン in the Uzuki residence after the Shion Visits Home
event; it requires you to complete a sliding block puzzle within 3 minutes.
You can try as many times as you need.
Duo Spell Ray デュオスペルレイ
Shion and Chaos
Stock: 2
This tech causes ether beam damage to one enemy. A little bit risque,
perhaps? To learn this, complete G2 Campaign #17, assigned by Bonnie ボニー
in the Foundation. She wants you to help her get a job, so you have to find
her a manners book and a pink dress. See my G2 Campaign FAQ for fuller
details on this mission, which has some other complex requirements.
Burst Veil バーストヴェール
Shion and MOMO
Stock: 1
This tech supports your party rather than attacks the enemy by giving your
party Burst Veil status, which basically doubles the effect of any Veil
spell you cast. If you're in the habit of casting Veil-type spells for
elemental protection, this can be a good tech to use, especially since
it's 'cheap' at 1 stock each for Shion and MOMO. To learn this tech, finish
G2 Campaign #8, which involves helping Ligi リージ at the power grid in
Second Miltia. You have to navigate through the maze of electrical power
grids and hit the switch in the back within 5 minutes. You can try as many
times as you want, so don't panic about it.
Eiyuu Kenbu (Hero's Sword Dance) 英雄剣舞
Shion and Jin
Stock: 2
This tech causes physical slashing damage to a single enemy. (It's very
pretty too). No real special attributes. To learn this double tech, finish
G2 Campaign #34 after clearing the Ormus Stronghold. Talk to Carlos カルロス
in Second Miltia, and he'll ask you to survey people for the best date
spot. Answer "Second Miltia" 第二ミルチア to complete the mission.
Houou Aikiken (Phoenix Love Spirit Sword) 鳳凰愛気剣
Shion and Jin
Stock: 3
This double tech causes ether, aura-elemental damage to one enemy. This can
be nice as neither Shion nor Jin normally has access to aura attacks, but
again the stock cost is a little more than the tech is worth. To earn this
double tech, you need the New Double Tech Awakening Book Three
新二人技覚醒書参, which is a rare steal from Margulis, the boss in the
Labyrinth.
Cross Fist クロスフィスト
KOS-MOS and Ziggy
Stock: 2
This causes physical, bashing damage to one character. Pretty plain. To earn
this double tech, you must finish G2 Campaign #22. Talk to Johnny ジョニー
after clearing the Ormus Stronghold in front of the bakery in the Foundation,
and accept his mission of playing paper-rock-scissors with everybody in
the area. If you win a certain amount of them, you'll be given this tech
as a reward.
Cross Hilbert クロスヒルベルト
KOS-MOS and MOMO
Stock: 2
This causes no damage, but instead causes H Lost status on all enemies. H
Lost prevents enemies from using Ethers, so this spell can be pretty nice
if you're up against some spellcasters. However you're not likely to get
much use out of this. To learn this, finish G2 Campaign #30. After reaching
Old Miltia, talk to Clive クライブ in King's Shop in the Foundation, and
then pick up all five cats and find them a suitable owner. Their locations
are as follows:
-Marcello マルセロ, Second Miltia, Spaceport
-Valentina ヴァレンティナ, Second Miltia City, Moby Dick Cafe
-Anuze アニューゼ, Second Miltia City, 40 Publishing Agency
-Nascha ナーシャ, Kukai Foundation City, Bar
-Kagari カガリ, Kukai Foundation City, Laundromat
After delivering all of the cats, return to Clive for the reward.
Dancing Rondo ダンシングロンド
KOS-MOS and Chaos
Stock: 3
This causes physical, bashing damage on one opponent. It costs 3 stock,
and thus isn't usually worth the damage. However, it's pretty funny to
watch. To earn this tech, finish G2 Campaign #28. To do so, you must first
beat the game, then reload the clear save file and play through all of
the secret dungeons. Finally, Kite カイト in the Iron Man bar in the
Foundation will ask you to defeat Mad Skeltar, who can be found on top of
the tower in the Heavenly Ruins. See my G2 Campaign FAQ for more details.
Hyoumonken (Frozen Sword) 氷紋剣
Jin and Chaos
Stock: 2
This causes physical, slashing and ice damage against one enemy. Ice damage
is the hardest kind of elemental to get, so this can be pretty good. This
is the only double tech you learn for free.
Ziggy Strike ジギーストライク
Ziggy and MOMO
Stock: 3
This causes physical, bashing and fire damage against one enemy. Not that
worth the stock, though it causes lots of damage and is HILARIOUS. G2
Campaign #32 is the one to beat to earn this skill. To do so you need to
pay off Matthews' 10 million G debt to K2 at the Spaceport in Second Miltia,
then you must talk to Kamikaze カミカゼ in the Elza.
Life One ライフワン
Chaos and MOMO
Stock: 3
Another support double tech, this casts "Saiai no Kachi" (Beloved Student)
on all of your characters, which will heal them to max automatically if
they should die. Since the spell Saiai no Kachi costs 60 EP, not to mention
4800 class points and 9600 skill points just to learn, this is a huge
benefit! It's too bad you can only cast it once per battle. Try casting it
during every boss fight. To learn this you need the New Double Tech Awakening
Book Four 新二人技覚醒書四, which is a rare steal from the Pope, the boss
of the Omega System.
Elemental Nocturne 精霊の夜想曲
Jr. and Chaos
Stock: 2
This skill causes ether/aura damage to all enemies. Very nice effect. To
learn this skill, complete G2 Campaign #9; this involves helping Maple
メイプル in Second Miltia find her stuffed teddy bear, which you can do
simply by chasing the thief around Second Miltia. After seeing three
cutscenes, examine the shiny object on the ground to pick up the bar, and
return it to Maple.
Silver Duet 白銀の二重唱
Jr. and MOMO
Stock: 2
This causes ether damage to one enemy. Not that spectacular, although very
pretty-looking (and cute, I guess). To earn this, you need the New Double
Tech Awakening Book One 新二人技覚醒書壱, which is a rare steal from Albedo,
the boss of MOMO's Deep Domain (Winter).
Burning Chorus 灼熱の合唱
Jr. and Ziggy
Stock: 2
This causes physical piercing and fire damage to all enemies. Again an
awesome double tech. Complete G2 Campaign #23, which involves helping
Panache パナシェ on the Elza. Go to Narcissus ナルシサス in the Vector
Section 2 in Second Miltia to get a battery, then return to Panache and use
the scanning device next to him. Rinse and repeat until you reveal the
culprit's face.
3. ES DOUBLE TECHS
ES Double Techs do not need to be learned; they depend solely on who the
copilot is. However, some double techs need 300 Energy Charge. Since 200
is the normal maximum, the only way to perform these double techs is to
equip the special accessory "EMAX300", which raises your maximum to 300.
You can get three of these items - convenient, since there's 3 ESs in the
game.
-One is a normal item drop from Icasaar, Pellegri's ES, which you'll fight
in the Ormus Stronghold.
-One is a rare item drop from Nagurufar, the giant cannon you'll run into
in the Submerged City.
-One is a reward for G2 Campaign #24, which involves taking a quiz after
completing the game. See my G2 Campaign FAQ for full details on the quiz
as well as the answers.

ES ASHER (Pilot: Jr.)
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Shoot Buster シュートバスター
Energy Charge: 100%
Subpilot: Ziggy, Jin, Shion, Chaos
Causes ether beam damage to one opponent. Can be good since the Asher does
not have ether attacks or beam attacks in its normal attack complement.
Blast Gatling ブラストガトリング
Energy Charge: 200%
Subpilot: Shion
Causes physical piercing damage to one opponent.
Kouyoku Tenshou (Wings of Light Sky Thrust) 光翼天衝
Energy Charge: 200%
Subpilot: Jin
Causes physical, slashing and aura damage to one opponent. Can cause great
damage, so use it if you have the EC to spare.
Ice Wind アイスウィンド
Energy Charge: 200%
Subpilot: Chaos
Causes ether ice damage to one opponent.
Corona Buster コロナバスター
Energy Charge: 200%
Subpilot: Ziggy
Causes ether fire damage to one opponent.
Odin Buster オーディンバスター
Energy Charge: 300%
Subpilot: Shion, Chaos
Causes ether beam damage to one opponent. Kind of a waste for 300% EC.
Gekkoujin (Moonlight Blade) 月光刃
Subpilot: Jin
Causes ether and aura damage to all opponents, making it pretty good. This
is the only way the Asher can attack multiple enemies.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ES DINAH (Pilot: KOS-MOS)
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Spiral Fist スパイラルフィスト
Energy Charge: 100%
Subpilot: Ziggy, Jin, Shion, Chaos
Causes physical bashing damage to one opponent. Not great, but sometimes
worth it.
Tornado Fist トルネードフィスト
Energy Charge: 200%
Subpilot: Shion
Causes physical bashing and lightning damage to one opponent. If the enemy
is weak against lightning, go for it.
Souryuuzan (Dual Dragon Slash) 双龍斬
Energy Charge: 200%
Subpilot: Jin
Causes physical slashing damage to one opponent. Pretty basic.
Hadoushou (Wave Palm) 波動掌
Energy Charge: 200%
Subpilot: Chaos
Causes physical bashing and aura damage against one opponent. Again, aura
damage is scarce, so utilize this if you need it.
Meteo Fall メテオフォール
Energy Charge: 200%
Subpilot: Ziggy
Causes ether fire damage to one opponent.
X-Buster
Energy Charge: 300%
Subpilot: Shion
Ah, nostalgia from XS1. Causes ether beam damage to all opponents, great if
the opponent is actually weak against beam.
Zantetsujin (Iron Cutting Blade) 斬鉄刃
Energy Charge: 300%
Subpilot: Jin
Causes physical slashing and aura damage to one opponent. Great damage,
though you probably won't see this happening too often.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ES ZEBULUN (Pilot: MOMO)
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Rain Arrow レインアロー
Energy Charge: 100%
Subpilot: Ziggy, Jin, Shion, Chaos
Causes ether beam pierce damage to all enemies. One of the best ES attacks,
as you can easily attack all enemies as soon as the battle starts if you
equip a Quick Charge (starts the battle with 100% EC).
Starlight Arrow スターライトアロー
Energy Charge: 200%
Subpilot: Shion
Causes ether pierce damage against one opponent. If there are multiple
opponents, it's usually better to just use Rain Arrow.
Hiten Kongoukyuu (Flying Thunderbolt Bow) 飛天金剛弓
Energy Charge: 200%
Subpilot: Jin
Causes ether pierce and aura damage to one opponent. This has the added effect
of nullifying enemy benficial status effects, making it one of the best
ES double techs. Use it often if necessary.
Ice Rondo アイスロンド
Energy Charge: 200%
Subpilot: Chaos
Causes physical slash and ice damage to one opponent.
Power Dancing パワーダンシング
Energy Charge: 200%
Subpilot: Ziggy
Causes physical bashing and fire damage to one opponent. Can cause a lot of
damage.
Aerod エアッド
Energy Charge: 300%
Subpilot: Ziggy, Jin, Shion, Chaos
Ah, nostalgia from Xenogears! This causes Ether and Beam damage to all
opponents. It will cause TONS of damage to enemies susceptible to beam,
so use it often if you come across such an opponent.
Big Meteo ビッグメテオ
Energy Charge: 300%
Subpilot: Ziggy
Causes ether fire damage to one opponent. Good damage, although it's usually
more efficient energy charge-wise to do Power Dancing.
4. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Q. If I missed getting a double tech, can I go back and get it?
A. If the double tech is learned from one of the rare item drops from
bosses, the answer is NO. Thus it is crucial you learn Psycho Pocket as
fast as possible so you can perform the double ether Rare Steal (Psycho
Pocket + Analyze). If the double tech is learned from a G2 Campaign, you
can get it at any time provided you haven't already failed the mission.
If you have, tough luck.
Q. How do I use a character double tech?
A. With one of the pair active and both having enough stock, Boost to the
other character in the pair, then go to the menu and choose "Double".
Q. How do I use an ES double tech?
A. Make sure the subpilot is who you want it to be and that you have
sufficient energy charge, then go into the menu and select "Special".
