1. What's the purpose of this document?
    This mini-FAQ is an informational resource for Namco's PSX platform
game Klonoa.  Level strategies won't be covered, so you'll have to finish
the game on your own.  =)  But instead, I'll be covering the extras that
can be uncovered after you've finished the game at least once, as well as
a couple other extras/secrets...
    Info has been compiled from both the J and U/C versions of the game.

2. Okay, I've finished the game.  Now what?
    Have you rescued everybody?  There are six people in each stage
to rescue (you can check your status for each stage on the stage select
map).  Once you've rescued all 72 people, an extra stage ("EXTRA VISION")
will become available...

3. The extra stage is hard!  Do I get anything for finishing it?
    Yep.  Finishing the extra stage will enable the music player on the
stage select map.  imho, having the music player is kinda nice (I liked
the music in this game).  The music plays in relay mode, so once the music
player gets done with one track, it automatically proceeds to the next; so
it's kinda like having a music CD on auto-repeat... =)

4. Is there anything else special in the extra stage?
    Well, if you finish the extra stage with a "perfect" gem count (150
or more), then during the sequence when Lephise and Klonoa are listening
to the music box, the sky will fade to darkness and you'll be treated to a
display of fireworks shaped like various items/characters/creatures from
the game...

5. What do I get for collecting gems?
    Every time the gem counter passes 99, you earn an extra life (unless,
of course, you already have 99 (max) extra lives...).
    Also, after you've completed the game, if you go back and replay a
level, the game will keep track of how many gems you collect.  For each
stage, an intended maximum of 150 gems may be collected (proper use of the
mirror spirits is essential to maximizing your gem count).  If you get 130
or more, the gem marker will become colored (green), and a creature from
the game will also appear next to it.  If you get a "perfect" gem count
(150 or more), the gem marker will become a large blue gem.  Getting a
perfect gem count on all levels alas doesn't seem to release anything else
extra, though...


6. Is it possible to get more than 150 gems on any of the stages?
    Actually, it's possible to get more than 150 gems on four stages:
Vision 1-2 (157), Vision 2-1 (152), Vision 5-1 (153), and Extra Vision
(153).

    Vision 1-2: In the cavern with the mirror spirit, don't destroy the
Giant Muu blocking access to the right half of the cavern, but pass it (by
taking damage and/or by using inflation overlap to walk through it).  Now
if you're quick enough after freeing the mirror spirit, you'll be able to
double the seven gems you get from the Giant Muu, in addition to the ones
you're supposed to double normally.
Here's a more detailed description:
  1) Pass the Giant Muu:
     a) Stand next to it and let the Shield Muu knock you to the right
        (1 damage), then run past.  Or:
     b) Jump into it (1 damage), and if you contact it high, you won't
        get knocked back very far (you'll bump the "ceiling" and fall
        straight down), and you'll be able to run past.  Or:
     c) Run into it while it's moving to the left, and you should be able
        to pass it, taking only 2 damage.  Or:
     d) Stand *right* next to it and inflate it.  If you're close enough,
        you'll be overlapping its space enough so that you can walk right
        through it (0 damage).  If you're too far away, just wait for it
        to deflate, and try again.  This can also be done with a jump,
        but staying on the ground seems easier.
  2) Grab either Shield Muu, jump onto the higher platform, and wait for
     the other Shield Muu to approach the ledge (about 1 or 2 creature
     widths away).
  3) As the Flying Muu is drifting down, throw the Shield Muu at the
     mirror spirit, then after it's active, run to the right (collecting
     4 of 6 gems from the first two columns), and grab the Flying Muu
     (which should be near the ground, so you don't have to waste time
     jumping).
  4) Double-jump to collect the third column, fall to the left to collect
     the remining gem from the middle column on your way down, and jump
     left to collect the remaining gem from the left column.
  5) Keep going left, grab the Shield Muu (who should've hit the wall and
     turned around by now), throw it at the Giant Muu, keep running left,
     and collect (and double) the seven extra gems.
Total gems doubled: 16 +7 = 23

    Vision 2-1: If you bring a creature to the mirror spirit area, and
you're quick enough after freeing the mirror spirit, you'll be able to
double two of the first three gems in the next section (through the
doorway), in addition to the ones you're supposed to double normally.
Here's a method that's worked for me:
  1) Grab a creature and bring it to the platform overlooking the Giant
     Muu and the mirror spirit.  The Muu to the left of the mirror spirit
     area reappears, so that's a good candidate to bring (use the
     floating leaf to get you to the top platform), if you don't already
     have a creature.
  2) When the Giant Muu is paused on the left side, jump to the right,
     fall towards the Giant Muu's right edge, then when you're at about
     the same height as (or slightly lower than) the mirror spirit,
     double-jump.
  3) Stay to the left of the mirror spirit, and on your way down from
     your double-jump, free it, then immediately move to the left.
  4) Collect the gems to your left, then immediately move to the right.
  5) Keep moving to the right, and if things have been timed correctly,
     the bounce of the Giant Muu's gems will put them in your path, and
     you won't have to double-back to collect any of them.  You will,
     however, have to jump once, and slow your pace slightly in order to
     collect the last two floating gems.
  6) Keep moving to the right, grab the Muu, and enter the doorway.
  7) In the next area, double-jump almost immediately, keep moving to the
     right, and you should be able to double two of the three gems on the
     platform.
Total gems doubled: 12 +2 = 14

    Vision 5-1: In the Yellow Orb section, if you're quick enough after
freeing the mirror spirit, you can actually double the three gems to the
right of the mirror spirit area, in addition to the ones you're supposed
to double normally.
Here's the pattern I used to do this:
  1) Hop to the right wheel and grab the Flying Muu.
     Wait there until the right flame column reaches full height.
  2) Double-jump to the left, freeing the mirror spirit.
     Collect left column of gems on the way down.
     Grab Flying Muu on the way down.
  3) Hop over to the right wheel.
  4) Double-jump, collecting middle column of gems on the way up.
     Hover to the right column and grab the Flying Muu.
     Collect right column of gems on the way down.
  5) Jump over right flame column (should be low height, if timed right).
     Collect gem on platform.
     Jump to the right and collect two gems in air.
     Use creature to double-jump to safety (either right or left).
Total gems doubled: 12 +3 = 15

    Extra Vision: If you're quick enough, you'll be able to double the
last three gems in the previous area before doubling the ones you're
supposed to double normally.
Here's the process that worked for me:
  0) Preliminary work and notes:
     a) This one is quite difficult, so you may want to obtain 99 extra
        lives before starting (just play through the Extra Vision,
        collecting 1UP coins, and repeat if necessary).
     b) Note that if you use the checkpoint clock next to the mirror
        spirit as your continue point, the creatures in the area to the
        right will be missing when you continue, making the process
        impossible to accomplish.  Thus, you will want to use the
        checkpoint clock from the previous section (seven columns of
        three gems each, floating above lava) instead.
     c) If you want to make your setup even nicer, collect the first six
        columns from that section (leaving only the last three gems),
        trigger the checkpoint clock next to the mirror spirit (to get it
        out of the way, so you don't accidentally trigger it later), then
        go back and trigger the checkpoint clock from the previous
        section (making that your continue point).
     d) For convenience, I've numbered the flying creatures, as follows:
          C6  C3
          C5  C2
          C4  C1
  1) Possibly optional step: Grab C1 (jump left, hover *right* next to
     the gems, grab during the hover lift right before you would fall,
     then land to the right), to use it to trigger the mirror spirit.
     I think this saves a *little* bit of time, but it might still be
     possible to complete this process using a manual trigger.
  2) Stand near the right edge of the platform, throw C1 left to trigger
     the mirror spirit, jump right, grab the flying creature, collect the
     three gems on the way down, and jump left to land on the platform
     again.
  3) Run left, jump, grab C1 (which should have reappeared by now) and
     jump, grab C2 and jump, completing your collection of the right
     column of gems.
  4) Continuing this jump, sail over C3, then on your way down, grab it.
     Keep falling to collect the rest of the mid-right column of gems.
     When you collect the large gem, try to be as far left as possible,
     so as to make the next step easier.
  5) Jump left, collecting the large gem at the bottom of the mid-left
     column of gems.  Grab C4 and immediately jump, which should
     hopefully give you enough lift to collect the rest of the mid-left
     column, and be able to clear C6.
  6) Continuing this jump, sail over C6, collect the left column of gems
     on your way down, and then hover left to safety.  Alternately, you
     could try to grab C6, C5, or C4 on the way down, then use that
     creature to jump to safety.
Total gems doubled: 26 +3 = 29


7. Are there any other extras in the game?
    Title screen wind code: Press L2+R2 (or press R2 while holding L2) at
the title screen, and you'll get a gust of wind that blows the drifting
leaves off the screen, much like when the "door to phantomile" title first
appears...

    And that's about all that I've found in the game, as far as extras.
