-- INTRODUCTION ---------------------------------------------------------------
===============================================================================
This FAQ is for the Photograph Mode of the Missions Area of
Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance for Microsoft Xbox. Personally, I've found
this portion of the game to be a lot of fun and well designed, though it is
relatively short.
I have attained the Top Record for each and every Level of Photograph Mode,
and I'm sure that with this FAQ and a little patience on your end, you can
accomplish this as well.
If you find any errors, incorrect information or know something that you feel
should be added to the FAQ, please send me an email and let me know.

Version 1.00
11/17/2002
- Began and completed the FAQ for both Snake and Raiden's Photograph Modes
===============================================================================
-- GENERAL INFORMATION --------------------------------------------------------
===============================================================================
Where is Photograph Mode?
Photograph Mode can be found by choosing "Missions" from the main menu,
and then choosing either Raiden or Snake followed by "Alternative Missions."
---------------------------------------------------------------------
I don't see Photograph Mode on that menu... where is it?
You need to unlock Photograph Mode for it to appear in place of the question
marks. This is done by completing all of the levels in Bomb Disposal Mode,
Eliminate Mode and Hold Up Mode.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
I'm taking the correct picture but I can't get the Top Record... why?
You're probably scoring only * or ** on the Map Score. The bonus points here
are almost always needed to earn the Top Record.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
What does "Map Score" refer to?
I've devoted a section to explaining both Map Score and Photograph Framing,
so please check it out below.
===============================================================================
-- MAP SCORE / PHOTOGRAPH FRAMING ---------------------------------------------
===============================================================================
Map Score awards you bonus points for how well you frame your picture.
Basically, you want to have your subject (what you're photographing)
completely within the lines with as little of anything else as possible. If
you're photographing a full poster, you should be able to see the complete
edge of the poster with just a little bit of what the poster is affixed to
around it.
There is some confusion as to what area your photo should be framed in. Here
is what the screen will look like when you've equipped your camera:
|-------------------------------------------|
| |
| |--- ---| |
| | | |
| | | |
| | _ | |
| | / \ | |
| -|- | | 0100 -|- |
| | \_/ | |
| | | |
| | | |
| | | |
| |--- ---| |
| |
|-------------------------------------------|
You want to have your subject contained within the green lines of the
camera view... not just contained within the screen. if you're trying to
frame a woman's head and the top of her head is just barely viewable at the
top of the screen, it will be cut off on the photograph and you will lose
Map Score points.
A good rule of thumb is to get a little more in the shot more than what
you think is needed. If you only get **, zoom in just a little tighter and
see what that gets you.
You must be conscious of how you frame your photographs if you are trying to
acheive the Top Record for these levels. You won't be able to get it if you
do not receive all three stars for Map Score.
===============================================================================
-- SNAKE / LEVEL 1 ------------------------------------------------------------
Here is a map of the area for Level 7. The lockers you can open are
numbered, while the lockers you cannot open have and "X" in them.
|---|----------|---|---|----------|---|
| 1 | | X | X | | X |
|---| |---|---| |---|
| 2 | | 3 | 4 | | 5 |
|---| |---|---| |---|
| |
|-------------------------------------|
This level will have you photographing 1 of 5 posters found in different
lockers in this room. The key is to know which lockers contain which posters.
short hair, busted teeth, yellow bikini
Locker 1 (Saya Kazuki)
head tilted and framed on left, white bikini straps showing
Locker 2 (Erina Abe)
leaning forward, red bikini top
Locker 3 (Yuko Ishida)
body leaning, head straight, orange bikini
Locker 4 (Shoko Nakagawa)
short hair, head tilted, light blue bikini
Locker 5 (Misako Yasuda)
Figure out which poster you've been given and go open the corresponding
locker. Move a few steps away, face the poster and switch to your camera.
Frame your shot and take it.
Speed is more important on this level than perfect framing, as the Map Score
seems to be fairly lax. Get most of the poster within the frame and you
should get ***. Do it quickly and you will get the Top Record.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-- SNAKE / LEVEL 2 ------------------------------------------------------------
This level will have you taking a picture of either one of two girls. If you
just want a hint as to where the pics are... watch the guard and pay attention
to what he's looking at. If you want the full solution, read on.
The girls will be showing up on one of two computer monitors, but only after
the guard pulls the pic up on screen. You cannot pull up the pic yourself, so
don't go knock the guard out or kill him... just yet. Depending on which girl
you get your strategy will be drastically different.
Girl in red bikini:
Walk straight ahead, look left through the window and switch to your camera.
Zoom in on the monitor that the guard is at and wait for him to pull up the
picture. Snap away, and keep in mind that you need to be facing the monitor
head-on for the picture to count.
Girl in yellow bikini:
Though she's a lot cuter than the other girl, her picture is tougher to get.
Personally, I recommend purposely failing if you get her so you can get the
other one, but here's a strategy for her anyway. Go into the room and stand
directly behind the guard. Wait for him to pull up the picture and then kill
him (tap the choke button to break his neck). Now switch to the camera, frame
your shot and take the picture.
For *** on Map Score simply frame the viewable area of the monitor with the
edges of the screen (not the green lines). This should put the subject in the
exact location you desire to get the full bonus points. For the girl in the
red bikini, you can actually have part of the guard's head blocking a corner
of the monitor and still get ***.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-- SNAKE / LEVEL 3 ------------------------------------------------------------
Here is a map of the area for Level 6. Lockers containing posters of interest
are marked with numbers while lockers containing nothing are marked with an X.
Follow along with the walkthrough below.
|---|-------------------------|
| X | |
|---| |-----------| |
| 1 | | | |
|---| | |-------| |
| X | | |---| |---| |
|---| | | | | |
| |-------| |---| |
| |
|--- ---------------------|
| |
| |---|---|---|---|---|---| |
| | X | X | 2 | X | 3 | X | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|-|
In this level you will be told to photograph the poster containing the same
pose as the silhouette shown. This will be one of only 3 different
poses/posters in the room. Learn the 3 different poses and 3 different poster
locations and this will be as easy as pie.
Locker 1: short hair, both arms down
Locker 2: leaning left, one arm down, one arm bent up (only half is visible)
Locker 3: leaning left, one arm down, one hand on head
Figure out which silhouette you've been given and go open the corresponding
locker. Move a few steps away, face the poster and switch to your camera.
Frame your shot and take it.
For *** on Map Score, photographs 1 and 3 should be framed so that you
can see the entire top edge of the poster and just BELOW the belly button of
the girl. Photograph 2 should be framed so you can see the entire top edge of
the poster and just ABOVE the belly button of the girl.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-- SNAKE / LEVEL 4 ------------------------------------------------------------
This can be a tough level at first, but once you know what to look for and,
more importantly, where to look for it you'll be just fine.
Walk straight ahead and through the door on your left. Walk about 10 steps
to the left along the platform and stop. Face the railing and switch to the
camera. On the platform on the complete opposite side of the room you should
see a lady (recognize her?) posing for you. Zoom in to frame her from about
the waist up, wait for the correct pose and snap your picture.
If you miss the opportunity in this spot, she'll move down the platform a
little. Do the same on your platform to line up the shot head on and wait
for the pose again.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-- SNAKE / LEVEL 5 ------------------------------------------------------------
This is a very simple level. Simply run to the room on the right through the
sliding door. As soon as you get into the room switch to the camera. You will
see a poster on the wall in front of you. Zoom in to frame the entire poster
and take your picture.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-- SNAKE / LEVEL 6 ------------------------------------------------------------
Here is a map of the area for Level 6. The letters represent different points
in the walkthrough below.
|---------------|
| C B |

| START |
| |
|------------------------------------|
The left half of the north wall of this room is a window. If you look through
you will see a bunch of people from the Sons of Liberty game. Go up to the
rightmost pane of glass (point A) and look straight ahead you will see the
President standing at point (B). Look at him through your camera lens and do
not zoom in. He'll do a few backflips and end up at point C, at which time
you should zoom in and frame his face. Snap your picture.
Bonus Map Score can be aqcuired by getting his face when it's lifted up.
Before his backflips it is lowered and worth only *. Right after the flips
he lifts his face proudly and a picture is worth ***. Just after this he
starts to walk back to point B and slightly lowers his face. A picture here
is worth **.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-- SNAKE / LEVEL 7 ------------------------------------------------------------
Here is a map of the area for Level 7. The lockers you can open are
numbered, while the lockers you cannot open have and "X" in them.

|---| |---|---| |---|
| 2 | | 3 | 4 | | 5 |

This level has 11 different possible tasks. 5 of them can be taking a
photograph of a certain part of a certain poster while the other 6 will have
you taking a photograph of one of the developer's favorite girl's poster.
Part of face shown | Locker found in (model's name)
-----------------------------------|-----------------------------------
Lips and teeth, mouth open | Locker 1 (Saya Kazuki)
|
Eye only, diagonally framed | Locker 2 (Erina Abe)

-- RAIDEN / LEVEL 1 -----------------------------------------------------------
Here is a map of the area for Level 1. The subject of the photograph is
marked with a "*" while the location you should be in to take the photograph
is marked with an "A." Follow along with the walkthrough below.
|---|----------|---|---|----------|---|
| | | | | | |
|---| |---|---| |---|
| | | | | A | * |
|---| |---|---| |---|
| |
|-------------------------------------|
Move yourself quickly to the spot marked "A" and face the locker with the "*"
on it. Switch to the Camera and move the view up to see the subject. Frame it
up and take your picture.
For *** on Map Score, take note of how the picture is supposed to be framed.
Just a small amount of the vent on the left should be in the frame while the
vent on the right should be out of the frame. The subject should be perfectly
centered from top to bottom.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-- RAIDEN / LEVEL 2 -----------------------------------------------------------
This is definitely the toughest of the Photograph Mode levels, but if you
follow these steps and have patience, you'll get the Top Record in just a few
tries. You should also understand before you start that the photo you're
trying to get is not of the guard on the floor, but rather of the guard on
his way down to the floor. This is a very specific photo you're trying to get,
and your timing will be key for clearing this level.
As soon as you start, run up through the hallway towards the guards. There
will be a doorway on your right. Just after this doorway there will be a
criss-crossing of shadows on the floor forming an "X" shape. This is exactly
where you want to drop the magazine that you are holding. Immediately after
dropping the mag, hug the wall on the left and knock on it to get the guard's
attention. Now, quickly run back down to where you started and stop just
past the doorway here.
Switch to your Camera and zoom in so that the guard is framed. The guard is
going to jump up and back, so move your view up and left just a little bit
so that you'll have him framed when he's airborne. Now, the tricky part;
when to snap the photo.
The way I time it is like this. He'll look both ways, and then throw his
hands up in the air. It's right at this time that you want to hit the button
to take the shot. During the split second that it takes to actually hit the
button, he should be in just the right pose for the picture. You'll want to
experiment here to find exactly the right timing for you.
This is a tough one to get the full Map Score for, and you will have to get a
little lucky. Be patient and use references that don't change to set up your
framing (like the corner of the wall, or the ceiling). It's certainly not
impossible to get, but it can take a little time.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-- RAIDEN / LEVEL 3 -----------------------------------------------------------
This one is all about the speed of your zoom. Quickly move down a step or
two so you can see through the doorway. Go into first-person view and raise
your M9. The guard will come into view and stop. When he does, fire a shot
at him (but don't knock him out, no head shots). IMMEDIATELY equip the
Camera and start to zoom in and move the view up a little to the top of
his head. The "!" should appear as you're doing this, so snap your shot as
soon as it's in the frame. It will disappear quickly, so make it fast.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-- RAIDEN / LEVEL 4 -----------------------------------------------------------
Stop looking to the sky... those are the wrong stars. Instead, you'll want to
make your own stars above a guard's head and take a picture of those.
The key to this level is your timing. If you run immediately up the stairs,
go to the left of the lookout tower and continue around it clockwise, you'll
be behind the guard and safely out of his view. Now, equip the Nikita, get
close behind him and press the attack button to smack him to the ground.
Quickly un-equip the Nikita and equip the Camera. Frame just the stars over
his head and take your shot.
For *** on Map Score make sure to knock the guard out on the half of the
platform that's fully lit. You may have to wait an extra second or two for
him to get over there, but it's worth it to get the full bonus.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-- RAIDEN / LEVEL 5 -----------------------------------------------------------
People usually make this level a lot more work than they have to. Right from
where you start, without moving at all, switch to your camera. Look down
just below the railing and you should see a soldier walking from the left to
right. This is your ghost. Zoom in just a little to frame up his head and
take your picture.
If you can't get *** for Map Score, try zooming a little more/less and see
what happens.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-- RAIDEN / LEVEL 6 -----------------------------------------------------------
The object of this level is to find a dead body, make the area it's in dark,
and then snap a shot of it's ghost. To find the body, run straight down the
hallway 'til you come to the first small area on the right. If you look in
you'll see a body.
To make the area dark, equip your USP, go into first-person view and shoot
out the light.
Immediately equip your camera and you should see a ghost right in front of
you. Make sure that you have the entire ghost's head and part of its body
within the frame and you should get the *** needed for a full bonus.
