III. NECESSARY EQUIPMENT & CONFIGURING NETWORK SETTINGS 3x00
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A. Necessary Equipment----------------------------------------------------3xA0
(1) PlayStation 2 - any model will suffice.
(1) PlayStation 2 Dual Shock 2 controller
(1) PlayStation 2 Memory Card (8MB) - it should be noted that using non Sony
branded memory cards with MGS3: Subsistence have been known to be erased
or have corrupt data after usage. Use non Sony PS2 memory cards at your
own risk. You have been warned.
(1) PS2 Network Adapter - if you already have the "slim" PS2 you do not need
this, as it is built-in to the "slim" PS2.
(1) Network cable (RJ-45)
(1) Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence or Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence Limited
Edition - more specifically, you need disc 2 (labeled: Persistence).
Finally, you'll need a Broadband Internet connection and all necessary
hardware to utilize that ISP (broadband modem, PC, router).
Please refer to the instruction manuals included with your PS2 and/or PS2
Network Adapter for instructions on how to install all necessary equipment. If
you are missing your instruction manuals, you can view them online at:
http://www.us.playstation.com/peripherals.aspx
B. Optional Equipment-----------------------------------------------------3xB0
MGS3: Subsistence's online mode also supports the use of a USB keyboard and/or
a USB headset. Both items are optional to use, but will vastly improve the
communication of team based modes. In theory at least.
If you choose to use a USB keyboard or headset, they must be plugged into an
available USB port before you turn on your PS2 and load MGS3: Subsistence.
C. Quick Installation Diagram---------------------------------------------3xC0
Below is a quick diagram that illustrates how a typical LAN is setup for PS2
online gaming. I highly recommend that you refer to the PS2 Network Adapter
user manual for more detailed instructions.

D. Configuring Network Settings-------------------------------------------3xD0
a. Creating a Network Configuration 3xDa
These instructions tell you how to set up your PS2's Network Adapter with
MGS3: Subsistence disc 2.
First, ensure that your PS2 memory card is inserted into either of the two
memory card slots of your PS2. The safest bet is with memory card slot 1.
Turn on your PS2 and load disc 2 of MGS3: Subsistence. From the main menu,
select the Online Mode option.
Since you're here to learn how to configure network settings, we're going to
assume that your memory card doesn't have a network setting file saved on it.
From the Online Mode menu, select Play Using Detailed Settings, then select
Network Settings, and finally select Edit Your Network Configuration File.
This will start the Network Configuration Utility program.
Once the Network Configuration Utility program has loaded, select the Add
Setting option and choose a memory card to which you want to save your new
settings. Keep in mind that it's best to select the same memory card where
you will be saving your MGS3: Subsistence data to. From this point on, the
on screen instructions are pretty self-explanatory so I'll just highlight on
the possible troublesome points.
* Use of PPPoE
Most users do not have to input a user ID and password to be able to play PS2
games online, so leaving this setting at Not Required will be okay.
* IP Address Setup
To play online games with MGS3: Subsistence, you can leave this setting on
Auto. However, if you are behind a firewall, such as people using a router,
you will need to select the Manual setting. For more information about the
Manual setting, please refer to the "Assigning your PS2 a static IP address
(3xDb)" section of this FAQ below.
* DNS Server Address Setup
As with the IP Address Setup settings, you can leave this setting on Auto
unless you are behind a firewall and wish to host online games. Please refer
to the "Assigning your PS2 a static IP address (3xDb)" section of this FAQ
for instructions on the Manual setting.
After configuring your settings, you will be prompted to test and save them to
your memory card. Press the X button and select Quit to return to the MGS3:
Subsistence Online Mode main menu.
b. Assigning your PS2 a static IP address 3xDb
If you are getting the "Cannot create game in current network environment.
(519:117)" error, you will need to assign your PS2 a static IP address to be
able to create and host online games. Note that if you do not wish to create
and host online games but just play in games hosted by other players, you do
not need to assign a static IP address to your PS2. Again, getting this error
has no ill effect on your ability to play MGS3: Subsistence online - it only
states that you will not be able to create and host online games.
The steps below describe as if you already have a network settings file saved
to your memory card, but the steps are pretty much the same if you do not.
The only difference is that you'll have to choose Add Setting instead of Edit
Setting.
Insert the memory card with the network setting save file into one of the
PS2's memory card slots, turn on the PS2 and load the second disc of MGS3:
Subsistence. Select the Online Mode from the main menu, then Play Using
Detailed Settings, then Network Settings, and finally select Edit Your
Configuration File to start the Network Configuration Utility program.
From the Network Configuration Utility program's main menu, select Edit
Settings and choose the network configuration file that you want to edit.
Select Yes to continue.
Advance the utility to the IP Address Setup section, highlight the Manual
setting and press the O button. Press right to advance to the next screen,
IP Address Entry, where you will see three settings to enter: IP Address,
Netmask, and Default Router.
For this step, we'll need a computer. Below are instructions on how to find
the necessary information for the Windows and Mac OS X operating systems.
* Windows (NT, Me, 2000, XP):
From your Start menu, select Run... and type "cmd" (without quotation marks)
in the text entry box that appears on screen. Select OK to run the Command
Prompt program. Once that is loaded, type "ipconfig /all" (without quotation
marks) and press enter/return on your keyboard. Look for IP Address, Subnet
Mask, Default Gateway, and DNS Servers. Copy the Subnet Mask address, usually
255.255.255.0, the Default Gateway address, and the DNS Servers address as
they appear. For the IP address, only copy the first three numbers (for
example, 192.168.2.?).
* Mac OS X (10.x):
Click on the Apple Menu, select System Preferences, and then click on Network.
The network settings may be grayed out and you will have to click on the lock
icon and enter the admin account name/password in order to be able to view
these settings. In the Show drop-down box, select how your Mac is connected to
the Internet (either Built-in Ethernet or Wireless). Finally, click on the
TCP/IP tab. You will see addresses for IP Address, Subnet Mask, Router, and
Domain Name Servers. Copy these addresses as they appear on screen, except for
the IP address where you should only copy the first three numbers (for
example, 192.168.2.?).
On your PS2, enter the first three IP address numbers that you wrote down.
You'll have to make a decision here. Choose a number between 0 and 255, but
keep in mind that you cannot choose a number that is already in use by another
computer in your network. Once you choose that number, enter it in the 4th
IP Address box. Enter the Subnet Mask address in the Netmask address boxes and
enter the Default Gateway (Router) address in the Default Router boxes. Once
complete, press right to continue.
You will now see the DNS Server Address Entry screen. Enter in the DNS Servers
numbers you wrote down in the Primary DNS and Secondary DNS boxes. Most people
only need to enter a Primary DNS address. Once complete, press right to
test and save your settings. Press the X button and select Quit to return to
the MGS3: Subsistence Online Mode main menu.
Congratulations! You have now created a static IP address for you PS2.
However, there is one more step you need to take before you can create/host
online MGS3: Subsistence games. Please continue reading...
c. Opening/Forwarding Ports 3xDc
If you're using a router, you most likely have a firewall in place that
hinders your ability to create and host online MGS3: Subsistence games. The
first step in fixing this problem was to assign your PS2 a static IP address,
as was described in the above section. The final step is to forward, or open,
the ports that MGS3: Subsistence uses so that the router treats those ports
as outside the firewall.
Remember that IP address you wrote down earlier? You'll also need it for this
step. You also need to know that ports that MGS3: Subsistence uses, those of
which are: UDP: 5730-5739; TCP: 80, 443, 5730-5733. Please note that you do
not, and should not, open TCP ports 80 and 443. While they are used by the
game, they are not needed for online play and hosting.
In order to access the settings for your router, you'll need the IP address of
your router. Since we already know an IP address of other computers on your
network, this will be easy. In a web browser's URL bar, type in the first
three numbers of the IP address (for example, "192.168.2."). For the last
number, enter the number 1 (so the address you type will be "192.168.2.1").
This is the address of your router.
Here is where things get tricky. Since there are so many router manufacturers,
there's no standardized means of forwarding ports. Some refer to it as Virtual
Servers while others may refer to it as Port Range Forwarding. Luckily for us,
all port forwarding requires specific information in order to work and as such
all user interfaces, no matter what it's called, will look similar. Look
around in your router's settings pages for this information.
Most, if not all, user interfaces for port forwarding will look as follows.
(For simplicity, [] refer to text boxes, {} refer to a drop down selection
menu, and # refers to a checkbox.)
[description] [starting IP] [ending IP] {TCP/UDP/Both} [IP address] #
* [description]
Use this textbox to enter a description of why these ports are being
forwarded. (for example, you could type MGS3)
* [starting IP]
Online gaming generally uses a range of ports. MGS3: Subsistence is no
different and uses port numbers 5730 - 5739. Enter 5730 in this box.
* [ending IP]
Enter 5739 in this box.
* {TCP/UDP/Both}
Some manufacturer don't have the Both option, so you'll have to create one
entry for TCP and another for UDP. If your router lets you select an option
called Both, then use that and only enter a single entry.
* [IP address]
Enter the static IP address that the PS2 uses. (for example, 192.168.2.128)
* #
This checkbox is used for enabling the port forwarding. Ensure that it is
checked before you apply your new router settings.
Your router may also have a checkbox that is labeled "private", I would think
that it is best to have this enabled. It shouldn't hinder your ability to
create games.
My router also has fields that allow you to assign the forward ports a private
port (they're labeled in a similar way as the [starting IP] and [ending IP]).
For simplicity, if you have these fields, just enter in the same values as
you did for port forwarding.
After you enter in the information, apply and save your settings. You should
no longer receive an error messages stating that you cannot create/host games.
If you've done all of these steps and you are still unable to create a game,
I really recommend that you refer to your router manufacturer's support page.
******************************************************************************
* I've been getting a lot of e-mails about how people were opening the ports *
* for their PS2's IP address, but failed to mention whether they put that *
* static IP in the PS2's Network Configuration settings. *
* *
* ENTERTING AN IP INTO YOUR ROUTER DOES NOT GUARANTEE THAT YOUR PS2 WILL USE *
* THAT IP ADDRESS. IN ORDER FOR YOUR PS2 TO HAVE A STATIC IP ADDRESS, YOU *
* MUST PUT THAT IP INTO YOUR PS2'S NETWORK CONFIGURATION SETTINGS. ONLY THEN *
* WILL YOUR PS2 HAVE A STATIC IP ADDRESS. *

IV. CREATING AN ONLINE ACCOUNT 4x00
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A. Creating an account for the first time---------------------------------4xA0
The very first time you start MGS3: Subsistence's online mode, you will need
to create an online account before you can actually go online and play.
Creating an online account is very simple and does not require any private
information on your part.
Make sure you have a PlayStation 2 Memory Card (8MB) inserted into memory card
slot 1 and then select the First Time option.
You will then be prompted to select a Network Settings file for use with your
new account. If you do not have one, you will have a create one before you can
proceed. Please refer to "Configuring Network Settings (3xD0)" of this FAQ for
instructions on how to configure your PS2 with network settings.
After selecting your Network Settings, you are then shown the Metal Gear
Online Terms of Service Agreement. Read through it if you wish and then select
Agree to proceed.
Now you can start entering in information to setup your online account.
Account ID: This is your account name and is used for you to log-in to the MGO
service. Your account name must be between 3 and 15 alphanumeric
characters (a-z, A-Z, 0-9).
Password: Your password must be between 6 and 12 alphanumeric characters.
Verify Password: Enter the same password as above to verify that you typed it
correctly.
Save Password: This option allows you to save the account password on your
memory card so that you do not have to enter it in every single time you
want to play online.
Player Name: This is the player name that other players will see when online.
This name can be the same as or unique from your account name. The player
name must be between 3 and 15 alphanumeric passwords.
After completing all the required information, you will be prompted to save
this data on your memory card. It should be noted that you can only have a
single Account per memory card. You will need extra memory cards for
additional accounts.
Congratulations! You are now ready to join the fun of Metal Gear Online!
For more details, you can refer to page 13 of the MGS3: Subsistence user
manual. Alternatively, you can view the manual online at:
http://www.konami.com/gs/patches/MGS3S_manual.pdf
B. How to play online using created account-------------------------------4xB0
Once everything has been setup properly you can log-on by choosing either the
Play With Same Settings or the Play Using Detailed Settings option.
Play With Same Settings will simply use the same settings that you used the
last time you played online. Most people only need to use this option. The
Play Using Detailed Settings allows the player to access Network Settings and
edit their Network Configuration Files. Play Using Detailed Settings also
allows the player to edit their Upstream Bandwidth rate. Most players do not
need to change this setting unless they are experiencing great amounts of
latency while hosting or playing an online game. It should be noted that
setting a value that is higher than your actual bandwidth will cause great
amounts of latency.
To begin your journey online, select either Play With Same Settings (or
Connect to Network if you selected Play Using Detailed Settings). Select Yes
and Agree to the Terms of Use when prompted to do so. You are then given a
list of Lobbies to connect to. Any Lobby will suffice, as long as it has
more than 0 players (unless you want to create a game on an empty server).
Once connected to a Lobby, there are several means of joining a game. The
easiest method is selecting the Quick Join option. Selecting Join Game will
display a list of all available games in the Lobby. You can also create a
game, if you desire to do so. These are explained in more detail in the
"Online Information (5x00)" of this FAQ.
You know have the basic knowledge to join and create games.
Enjoy Metal Gear Online!
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
V. ONLINE INFORMATION 5x00
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A. Game Modes-------------------------------------------------------------5xA0
All game modes can be played up to a total maximum of 8 players. Game creators
can choose to have fewer players per game if they want.
a. Sneaking Mission 5xAa
This game mode has one person play as Snake against all 7 other players. The
player who is Snake must find a microfilm on the map and then return it safely
to his base in order to win. The other players must kill Snake or defend the
microfilm in order to win. Who ever kills Snake gets to play as Snake in the
next round.
b. Capture Mission 5xAb
In Capture Mission, two teams must face off and find the hidden Kerotan doll,
and then bring it back to their base. The Kerotan must be held within that
team's base for a determined amount of time before they can be declared the
winner. The game creator determines the amount of time that the team must hold
the Kerotan within their base when he creates the game server.
This game mode kind of reminds me of capture the flag, well in this case,
capture the frog.
c. Rescue Mission 5xAc
In Rescue Mission, there are two teams: the Red team and the Blue team. The
Red team must defend Gako (a duck), while the Blue team is trying to steal
Gako and return it to their base. In order to win, the Red team must
successfully defend Gako for the entire duration of the round. The Blue team
wins when they successfully deliver Gako to their base. A team can also win
when they kill all members of the opposing team, as players do not return to
life when killed.
d. Team Deathmatch 5xAd
This is another Red team versus Blue team game mode. In this game mode each
team has a predetermined amount of Life Tickets for a given round. When a team
member is killed, that team loses one Life Ticket. The first team to lose all
of their Life Tickets loses the round.
e. Deathmatch 5xAe
Deathmatch is the only game mode where it is every player for themselves. The
player with the most kills at the end of the time limit is determined the
winner.
B. Lobby Selection / Lobby Menu-------------------------------------------5xB0
The Lobby Selection screen is very simple. All of the available servers are
listed along with the number of players on each server. Choose a lobby of your
preference and press the O button to enter.
Upon entering a lobby, you are shown the Lobby Menu along with the Online
News, if there is any.
* Quick Join
Selecting this option will prompt you for what kind of game rules you want and
will automatically log you onto the most optimal host.
* Join Game
Choosing this option will show you the Host List screen and allow you to
manually browse all of the available hosts and choose whichever host you want
to join.
By pressing the Start button while on the Host List screen, you will be able
to quickly search through the available hosts based on:
Filter Host List: Set which Hosts you want displayed.
Sort Host List: Set the order in which Hosts are displayed.
Player Search: Search for a specific player in all Lobbies.
Friend Search: Search for a friend in all Lobbies.
The Host List also contains some icons/symbols that quickly indicate various
information about the host.
To the left of the host name is a colored bar. This colored bar indicates the
strength of that host's Internet connection. A red bar indicates a weak
connection, a yellow bar indicates an average connection, and a green bar
indicates a strong connection.
The host information in the dark rectangle indicates various game features
that are enabled by the host.
LK: Private game. Requires correct password in order to join.
WP: Weapon restrictions are in place.
FF: Friendly Fire is enabled. This means that you can hurt your teammates.
VC: Voice chat is enabled.
* Create Game
Create your own game. Please refer to section "Creating a Game (5xC0)" for
more information about creating a game.
* Personal Data
Here you can check your battle record, friend list, blacklist, and server
settings.
Friend list: Place your friends in this list and they'll become easier to see
among other players on the Host List. Friend list players are indicated by
a white box in the upper right corner next to their name.
Blacklist: Place players here to remind you that you don't like playing with
them. Like the friend list, players will be easily identified as blacklisted
when placed on the blacklist. Blacklisted players are indicated by a black
box in the lower right corner next to their name.
* Player Ranking
This option will show you your current ranking.
Score Ranking: Displays your average ranking based on the games you've played.
Press the L1 or R1 button to scroll through the various game modes. Pressing
the Start button will allow you to switch between displaying Overall and
This Week only.
VS. Rating Rankings: Displays your overall ranking based on the ranking of the
players you have recently played against.
* Online Game Options
Allows you to change in-game controls and display settings. Please refer to
the "Options (5xD0)" section for more information.
C. Creating a Game--------------------------------------------------------5xC0
Creating a game in MGS3: Subsistence is very simple and can be done in a
matter of minutes.
After selecting the Create a Game option, you will be prompted to enter in
information about the game and what rules you want to enable.
* Host Name
By default this is your account name, but you can change it to anything you
like.
* Password Lock
This is for creating a private game. Players will not be able to join this
game unless they have the correct password.
* Comment
Use this to provide any additional information about the game, if you desire
to do so.
Now you can set the rules and maps that you want to use while playing. After
you're done setting the rules, select OK and then Yes to begin hosting games.
a. Game Rules 5xCa

Ocelot Unit. The blue team cannot be the same unit as the red team.
* Unique Characters
This will allow the squads' special characters to be available in the game.
You can also change the settings for those special characters here.
* "????"
I don't know what this option is. The official MGS3: Subsistence user manual
describes it as: "If a certain event happens, this option will be selectable."
Once you unlock the Rumble Roses secret characters, this option reads:
"Reiko Hinomoto/Rowdy Reiko" and allows you to enable or disable the use of
the secret characters Reiko Hinomoto and Rowdy Reiko in your game.
* Max Number of Players
Set the maximum number of players you want to join in your game. You can
choose from 2 to 8 players.
* VS. Rating Restriction
This limits players from joining your game. They will have to meet a certain
VS. Rating before they can join.
Off: No ratings restriction.
Above Standard VS. Rating: This setting only allows players with a rating
higher than the one set by the host.
Below Standard VS. Rating: This setting only allows players with a rating
lower than the one set by the host.
* Set VS. Rating
If VS. Rating Restriction is turned on, you can set the rating to which
players will have to be either higher or lower than in order to join your
game. Ratings can be set from 100 to 9900. Lower numbers mean higher rating.
* Weapon Restrictions
This allows you to set restriction on weapons.
None: No weapons are restricted from the game.
No Primary Weapons: Disallows primary weapons from being used. Primary weapons
include the Scorpion, XM16E1, AK-47, M37, SVD, etc.

E. Unique Characters------------------------------------------------------5xE0
Each of the four available teams in the online mode have a unique character
that has special abilities that give them an extra edge in battle over the
normal team members. In order to play as the unique character, you must be the
player with the highest score on your team in the previous round.
a. Ocelot (Ocelot Unit) 5xE1
Ocelot is the only character in the game that can use the Single Action Army
(SAA). When he uses the SAA, his bullets can ricochet of objects/walls so that
they can hit a target from around a corner. I'm also told that is takes two
headshots to kill Ocelot, thanks to his beret.
b. Major Raikov (GRU) 5xE2
Raikov is the only character in the game that is not affected by the Book
secondary weapon's (men's magazine) stun effect. He also has a special CQC
move where he can down an opponent by grabbing their crotch.
c. Sokolov (KGB) 5xE3
Sokolov doesn't have any special combat skills like Raikov or Ocelot. Instead,
he is the only character (other than Snake in the Sneaking Mission mode) that
can use stealth camouflage.
d. Reiko Hinomoto (Team Rowdy Reiko) 5xE4
Reiko has a unique CQC move, the Sunrise Suplex, which comes from her moveset
in Rumble Roses. Her salute animation is described as a "sensual pose".

VI. ERROR MESSAGES 6x00
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A. Cannot create game in current network environment. (519:117)-----------6xA0
This basically states that your network is setup in a manner such that you
are unable to create (host) online games. You can join other players games
without any problems, but if you want to host a game you will have to forward
the ports. This error is caused by being behind a firewall and can be fixed by
forwarding the ports that MGS3: Subsistence uses.
The ports used by MGS3: Subsistence are:
UDP: 5730-5739
TCP: 80, 443, 5730-5733
Note that TCP ports 80 and 443 do not require forwarding, as they are
outgoing and are thus not affected by the firewall.
To forward these ports, refer to your router's instruction manual. If the
instruction manual does not contain this information, you will have to refer
to the router manufacturer's website. You will also need the IP address that
the PS2 uses in order to be able to forward these ports. It is easier to do
this step if the PS2 is given a static IP address rather than the one given
to it automatically by your router's DHCP. Please refer to "Configuring
Network Settings (3xD0)" of this FAQ for more information regarding setting a
static IP for your PS2.
If you do not have a router, you will have to contact your ISP and have them
open the above ports for you.
Please note that Konami has also recommended that you place the static IP
being used by your PS2 outside your firewall by setting it as a DMZ host.
Doing so is very risky and can open your network to attack. Do so at your own
risk! Forwarding the ports is sufficient enough for you to create and host
online games.
B. The Lobby is full. Failed to connect to Lobby. (829)-------------------6xB0
Self explanatory. The Lobby has too many players on it. You can either try
the same Lobby again or log-on to another Lobby that has less players.
C. DNAS Errors------------------------------------------------------------6xC0
Dynamic Network Authentication System, or DNAS, is Sony's standardized method
of making sure that you're not using an illegal copy of a PS2 game, using a
cheating device and even a modded PS2. It's here to protect our online
experience from cheaters and hackers as well as protect PS2 developers from
software pirates, so overall it does more good than bad.
With that said, I'll do my best to have answers for DNAS errors MGS3 online
players may experience.
So what causes a DNAS error? You will get a DNAS error if you:
1. Did not setup your PS2 network setting correctly.
2. Your Internet connection is behind a firewall.
3. Using a copied (or burned) game.
4. Your PS2 is modded to play imports and/or copied games.
5. You are using a cheating device, such as a GameShark.
To get rid of a DNAS error:
1. Properly setup your PS2's network settings.
2. Assign your PS2 a static IP address and open the ports that the game uses.
3. Go buy the game you dirty pirate.
4. Buy a new PS2 (and do not mod it) or unmod your PS2.
5. Remove the cheating device. Cheaters are lame.

* As of April 1, 2007, Konami has shut down the servers for online play. *
* At this time, there does not exist any other means of playing MGO. *
* Hopefully there will be the ability to create private servers. Until that *
* time, please enjoy the PSP version of MGO. *
* I will update this FAQ once private servers become available. *

VII. FAQ 7x00
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1. Can MGS3: Subsistence be played online with a dial-up connection?
-- No, MGS3's online modes require that you have a broadband connection.
2. Can MGS3: Susbsistence be played via LAN or system link?
-- No, MGS3 does not have a multiplayer mode that supports LAN or system
link.
3. Help! I can't create or host my own games. What do I do to fix this?
-- The most likely reason is that you are behind a firewall. You will have
to open those ports via router settings. Please refer to section 3xD0 for
information regarding this.
4. How are the secret characters Reiko Hinomoto and Rowdy Reiko unlocked?
-- You can either play online a total of 50 hours or simply obtain and keep
any Animal Rank. Once one of these objectives are reached, Reiko will be
unlocked for you to use when you host an online game.
5. I assigned my PS2 a static IP address in my router settings, but I still
can't create online games.
-- Entering an IP address in port forwarding for a certain IP address does
not guarantee that the PS2 will be using that IP address unless you enter
the same IP into the PS2's network settings. Refer to section 3xDb for
information about how to assign your PS2 a static IP address.
6. How much does it cost to play MGS3: Subsistence online?
-- MGO does not cost anything to play online.
