1) Version history:
(The following is in Date/Month/Year format)
11/11/2006 - Version 1.0: This is the first creation of the guide.
2) Introduction:
Well, with the release of Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence, I began playing the
original Metal Gear games before anything else since I had never played them
before. I tried to find guides for the games but I could only find guides for
the original MSX versions. Those guides were good enough to help me through the
main game, but after completing the main game I unlocked Boss Survival mode.
There was no Boss Survival mode in the original MSX games. Therefore, I tried
to find guides for Boss Survival mode but I found nothing. I asked on forums
and no one replied. However, through practice I became really good at Metal
Gear's Boss Survival mode all by myself. Long story short, I decided to find
out how the code name ranking system worked for Boss Survival mode (which is a
long and tedious process) and after that I figured I would just write a guide
for the whole thing.
I found Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake's Boss Survival Mode to be much more
difficult. I spent a lot of time trying to get BIG BOSS rank as I had done on
Metal Gear's Boss Survival, but I found it pretty difficult and frustrating. I
became occupied with other things in my life and then stopped trying to get BIG
BOSS rank for a really long time. Eventually, I got back into playing the game
and decided to try for it again. I finally pulled it off! After all that time
had gone by, I could still not find any guides for Boss Survival mode for this
game. I made the guide for the Metal Gear, so I figured I would make the guide
for this game as well.
3) Code names
You get a code name upon completion of Boss Survival mode. I shall list the
code names in the following format: "Code name: Requirement". Where "Code name"
is the actual code name and "Requirement" is the requirements that must be
fulfilled in order to get that code name. I'd like to note that in the
circumstances where only 1 ration can be used, that is because there is a part
where 1 ration is mandatory to be used.
BIG BOSS: Normal mode, 1 ration used, Completed in under 8:00*
FOX: Normal mode, More than 1 ration used, Completed in under 8:00*
EAGLE: Easy mode, Completed in under 8:00*
PANTHER: Completed between 8:00 and 8:29
JACKAL: Completed between 8:30 and 8:59
ZEBRA: Completed between 9:00 and 9:29
DEER: Completed between 9:30 and 9:59
ELEPHANT: Completed between 10:00 and 10:59
HIPPOPOTAMUS: Completed between 11:00 and 11:59
TURTLE: Completed between 12:00 and above**
CHICKEN: Lose
*There may be other times that can obtain these ranks. Refer to the timing
system glitch in section 6) Tips.
**Most times between 12:00 and 98:59 will likely result in TURTLE rank. However,
some may not. Refer to the timing system glitch in section 6) Tips.
4) Overview
Here I will be going over each boss in details as well as the items found in
their corresponding area. I will not be going over the specifics of the area of
itself however. I find it to be unnecessarily technical for one thing, and
also, to unlock Boss Survival mode you would need to beat the game and
therefore I am hoping that you will be at least decently familiar with each
area. If not, then it is generally quick and easy to get used to each area you
fight in.
Another thing I will not explain is what each weapon does. This is also
something you learn in the main game and is also quick and easy to learn on
your own through experimentation.
4A) BLACK NINJA
This boss will shoot 3 sprays of bullets at a time. He walks around on occasion
and always stays put when shooting. He also starts flashing and then warps to a
new location. He is invincible when flashing and usually flashes and warps twice
in a row, though sometimes less or more. If warping more than once, the first
time he warps to a new location, he'll only be there for less than a second
before warping again. If timed efficiently, he can be hit during that fraction
of a second.
The items available in this area are:
Normal mode: 2 Ammo
Easy mode: 2 Ammo and 1 Ration B1 Unit
4B) RUNNING MAN
The only thing this boss does is run away from you.
The items available in this area are:
Normal mode: 3 Mine and 2 Plastic Explosive
Easy mode: 3 Mine, 2 Plastic Explosive, and 1 Ration B3 Unit
4C) HIND D
The only thing this boss does is fly around in a consistant counter clockwise
circular pattern. If you are on the same screen that this boss is on then it
will shoot sprays of bullets at you. The amount of sprays it will shoot at you
and the amount of bullets in each spray will vary to some degree depending on
your position on the screen. However, 5, 6, and 1 bullet/s usually come with
each spray.
The items available in this area are:
Normal mode: 1 Ammo and 3 Stinger Missle
Easy mode: 1 Ammo, 1 Ration B2 Unit, and 3 Stinger Missle
4D) FOUR HORSEMEN
This battle actually consists of 4 bosses. There is 1 boss on each side of the
room. Whichever side/s you are most on or move towards, the boss/es on the
opposite side/s will jump down. So if you move to the left side, the boss on the
right side will be more prone to jump down. Once on the ground the bosses will
stay on their corresponding side and will move from one corner of their side to
the other corner of their side and they will repeat this process. After a boss
touches each corner once, and once a boss then gets aligned with you, it tends
to stop to shoot 2 bullets at you and then repeat the process. On occasion a
boss will jump back up to the top of the wall. Also, if you get up against a
boss's wall, instead of running into you to hurt you, it will usually (but not
always) just jump back up to the top of its wall before running into you. When a
boss is on top of its wall, it can not hurt you, nor can you hurt that boss.
The items available in this area are:
Normal mode: 2 Ammo and 2 Grenade
Easy mode: 2 Ammo and 2 Grenade
4E) NIGHT FRIGHT
This boss is invisible the whole time. In order to get an idea of where the boss
is location you can listen to the noise it makes when it walks since different
floors in this stage make different noises when walked on. Another way to get an
idea of where the boss is located is by looking at where its bullets are being
shot. The boss should of course be near where its bullets begin when being shot.
It will shoot 6 sprays of bullets at a time. The boss follows you and walks at a
moderate speed.
The items available in this area are:
Normal mode: 4 Ammo and 4 Grenade
Easy mode: 4 Ammo, 4 Grenade, and 1 Ration B3 Unit
4F) METAL GEAR D
This boss walks to the front then will shoot 6 bullets at a time and each bullet
is aimed toward you. It then walks to the back and shoots 2 missles which are
shot forward but then head horizontally towards you as soon as they are lined up
to you. The boss repeats this process consistantly. Also, touching the boss
results in death.
The items available in this area are:
Normal mode: 6 Grenade
Easy mode: 6 Grenade
4G) GRAY FOX
The boss tends to run in a square pattern around the edges and will occasionally
come towards you to attack. It attacks with punches. Also, there are 20 mines
around the edges of the room. The mines do not detonate if the boss touches
them, only if you do. However, if you cause a mine to explode and the boss gets
hit by that explosion, it can still hurt the boss. It does not hurt to touch
this boss.
The items available in this area are:
Normal mode:
Easy mode:
4H) BIG BOSS
This boss tends to follow you. If you are anywhere near in its field of vision
it will continually shoot sprays of bullets at you. It hurts to touch this boss.
There are also 6 puddles which cause death if touched. These puddles can be
deactivated if touched while having a Ration equipped.
There will be 2 walkthrus. The first teaches you a safer way to get through
each boss. The second teaches how to get through quickly but is not the safest
way. A lot of people want to be able to achieve BIG BOSS code name in Boss
Survival mode. Well, following the strategy in the Standard Walkthru is best
since it can be difficult to survive through all of it if you do quicker but
more damaging strategies. However, if you can't quite make it under 8 minutes
using the first walkthru, then try adopting some strategies from the Speedrun
Walkthru. You can also read through both and kind of run through Boss Survival
using a mixture of both walkthrus.
Remember, if you want BIG BOSS code name then you have to play on Normal mode.
If you just want to beat Boss Survival mode and nothing more, then playing on
Easy mode would of course make it easier for you but the first walkthru will
still work just fine. It's just that on Easy mode there are a lot more Ration
you can pick up which I won't mention to pick up in the walkthru. So you can
stray from my strategy a bit to pick up a Ration if you really want, however, a
lot of the time it is not necessary and/or risky to go out of your way to pick
up a Ration. If you want to be able to beat it on Normal mode but don't care
for BIG BOSS rank, then the first walkthru will still be best for you.
5A) Standard Walkthru
5AA) BLACK NINJA
When you are far back from the boss it is easy to dodge his spray of 3 bullets.
So after he shoots a spray just get inline with him and shoot him once then run
away to dodge his next spray again. If he is close to you, it is hard to dodge
his bullets so it's best to back away and wait for a better opportunity before
you try to shoot him.
5AB) RUNNING MAN
The strategy is basically the same whether played on Easy mode or Normal mode,
but on Easy mode the boss is only 4 hits. So I'll explain what to do as if you
are playing on Normal, but if on Easy then just head through the top hallway
instead of laying the fifth or sixth Mine. As soon as the stage starts press L2
and equip the Gas Mask. Then pick up the Mine right above you. You should head
right and set a mine here. This is kind of tricky though. You must set the mine
in the little hallway and you must set it in the middle. There's enough space so
that the mine could be more towards the bottom or more towards the top, and if
you set it too high or too low the boss can totally dodge it. So really try to
set it in the middle the best you can. Also, when setting it, just turn to your
left to set it, otherwise if you set it while facing right then you continue
heading right you might accidentally trigger it yourself. After setting that
first mine, head upwards and set your second mine in this smaller hallway.
Because this hallway is so small you don't have to worry about where the mine is
positioned, as long as it is in the hallway. Then head left and set your third
mine in this hallway. Like the first mine, you must try to position the mine in
the middle and not in front of you otherwise you may accidentally trigger it on
yourself. Then head all the way down to the room your started in. Repeat the
pattern. Set the fourth mine in this hallway then the fifth mine in the smallest
hallway. You'll run out of mines but just head up and grab the Mine and set the
sixth mine in this same hallway that you set the third. Now go all the way down
to the room you started in and set the seventh mine in this same hallway you set
the first and fourth. That is the last one you need so just head to the top
right room then to the top left and he'll get hit by it and you'll win.
5AC) HIND D
Immediately head right until you get the Stinger Missle then head up and crawl
under the first barricade. Once this boss enters your screen and after it shoots
two sprays of bullets at you immediately crawl out of the barricade, stand up,
and equip the Stinger Missle. You then shoot him by using the radar screen and
aiming the square over the boss's position and shooting. It can be difficult and
frustrating to accurately shoot the boss like this. The boss is four hit like
this on Normal mode and 3 hits on Easy mode and I can hit him all 4 times before
he gets back to my screen. I'll try to explain how I do it. As soon as I equip
the Stinger Missle I head directly left until the square is somewhat off screen
then I shoot. I then follow the boss's position downwards only a bit and then
shoot again. I then follow it down and to the right a bit and I shoot again.
Then I follow it to the right a bit so that it is on the bottom right screen and
I give it the final shot.
5AD) FOUR HORSEMEN
Using the Grenades to fight these enemies seems tempting, but I usually find it
to be more difficult and it also takes longer most of the time. I just pay
careful attention to the order in which the boss's drop down and shoot them with
the Handgun based on that order. So the Handgun may not hurt as much but it is
much quicker. Once there is only one boss left, I pick up a Grenade and finish
the last one off with Grenades. Also, picking up a Grenade here is helpful for
the next boss stage.
5AE) NIGHT FRIGHT
Immediately head directly right and stay behind the top wall here. This will be
the safest way to fight this boss, but it can also be very annoying to try to
hit him. The boss will often go up against this wall and you will be able to
chuck Grenades at him from behind the wall and hit him without risking getting
hit by his bullets. If you can see bullets spray then you will get a good idea
of where the boss is at. Just chuck Grenades at wherever you think he is
located. A lot of it takes some guessing, but once you get one hit on him, it
will be easier to know where he is located and sometimes you can continue
chucking Grenades in one location and finish him off quick and easy. On rare
occasions the boss may actually get on the inside of the wall you are hiding
behind and he'll be able to shoot you. It is unfortunate when that happens, but
fortunately it rarely happens!
5AF) METAL GEAR D
Because this boss starts off shooting bullets instead of missles, it's a bit
tricky to get into the pattern. So when this stage starts just go to the bottom
right corner and as soon as the boss shoots head to the top right corner. As
soon as the bos stops shooting head down to the middle. The boss will shoot
missles and as soo as he does head back to the top corner again and the go to
the left slightly. Be careful about this! If you go too far left, you can run
into the boss which is an automatic death. However, it is helpful to go slightly
left because it gives you a little more space to work with for when the boss
starts shooting at you. As soon as he does start shooting, head all the way
right and then quickly down to the bottom right corner. If you hadn't moved left
at the top, the bullets are harder to dodge when heading to the bottom. The last
shot will often hit you since you get stuck in the bottom corner too early. So
once the boss stops shooting it will head upwards. So get out of that bottom
corner and position yourself in front of the boss. Shoot 2 Grenades at its feet
then head to the top right corner in order to dodge the missles and then go to
the left a bit. You simply repeat the pattern from here until the boss is
defeated.
5AG) GRAY FOX
This boss tends to move around the room in a square counter clockwise pattern. I
find it best to try to follow him around in this pattern and throw a punch on
him every chance you get when he's not already flashing invincible from a
previous punch. Occasionally the boss will confront you and try to punch you so
try to be ready for this and position yourself and punch him before he punches
you.
5AH) BIG BOSS
Right from the start just hold up. You'll make your way into a door, grab Card 1
from here then exit the room. Head down to the bottom wall and go right, on the
next screen grab the Ration B1 Unit. Go all the way to the top screen and enter
the door on the corner here with Card 1 equipped and grab Card 2. Exit the room
and head all the way to the very left screen and enter the door on the corner
here with Card 2 and grab Card 3. Exit this room then head down to the very
bottom. You'll see a puddle in front of a door here. Equip a Ration B1 Unit and
touch the puddle. Now head right 1 screen and equip Card 3 then enter the
unopened door next to the very first door you entered. Grab Card 4 here then
exit the room. Head right 1 screen and equip Card 4 then enter the door on the
corner here but be careful! When the door opens just barely tap up. I say this
because as soon as you enter the room there is a puddle which will give you an
automatic death if you touch it. So as soon as you enter this room go to the
right then up and grab the Lighter then exit the room. Now go to the very top
right screen then head left 1 screen and enter the closest door here with Card 4
still equipped but be careful! As soon as the door opens just tap down. This
room also has a puddle so once you enter it head left then down and grab Card 5
then exit the room. Now go all the way left then all the way down to the screen
that has a puddle in front of a door. Equip Card 5 then enter that door and grab
the Spray. Equip the Lighter and Spray then exit the room. Now wait by the wall
to the left of this room and the boss should come over to you. If you wait by
this wall the boss will often venture up and down on a side of the wall. Always
try to be on the opposite side of the wall that the boss is on. You can shoot
fire at him and it will hit him even through the wall. So just keep hitting him
through the wall until you win.
5B) Speedrun Walkthru
5BA) BLACK NINJA
Just keep on following him behind the wall and shooting him with the Handgun. If
you try to follow him to closely he is more prone to warp which can make the
stage slower to win.
5BB) RUNNING MAN
The strategy is basically the same whether played on Easy mode or Normal mode,
but on Easy mode the boss is only 4 hits. So I'll explain what to do as if you
are playing on Normal, but if on Easy then just head through the top hallway
instead of laying the fifth or sixth Mine. As soon as the stage starts press L2
and equip the Gas Mask. Then pick up the Mine right above you. You should head

to the room you started in and set the seventh mine in this same hallway you set
the first and fourth. That is the last one you need so just head to the top
right room then to the top left and he'll get hit by it and you'll win.
5BC) HIND D
Immediately head right until you get the Stinger Missle then head up and crawl

and equip the Stinger Missle. You then shoot him by using the radar screen and

shoot again. I then follow it down and to the right a bit and I shoot again.
Then I follow it to the right a bit so that it is on the bottom right screen and
I give it the final shot.
5BD) FOUR HORSEMEN
Using the Grenades to fight these enemies seems tempting, but I usually find it
to be more difficult and it also takes longer most of the time. I just pay

the Handgun based on that order. So the Handgun may not hurt as much but it is
much quicker. Once there is only one boss left, I pick up a Grenade and finish
the last one off with Grenades. Also, picking up a Grenade here is helpful for
the next boss stage.
5BE) NIGHT FRIGHT
This stage is hard to know how to do the fastest way. There are 2 ways that
stand out that I know of. You can either head directly right and stay behind
the top wall here. This is the safest strategy and can sometimes be the quickest
as well if you are able to chuck a Grenade and hit him right away and keep track
of his location from there. Otherwise, you could just head right but not go
above the wall and instead just hang around the middle and let him shoot you
then you will know his location real easily and you can chuck Grenades at him
from there.
5BF) METAL GEAR D
Start off heading right and then turn left and chuck 2 or 3 Grenades at the
boss's feet. Then when the boss heads upwards chuck 2 or 3 Grenades at his feet.
Repeat this pattern. Simply use your judgement to determine if you can manage 2
or 3 hits in time.
5BG) GRAY FOX
This boss tends to move around the room in a square counter clockwise pattern. I
find it best to try to follow him around in this pattern and throw a punch on
him every chance you get when he's not already flashing invincible from a
previous punch. Occasionally the boss will confront you and try to punch you so
try to be ready for this and position yourself and punch him before he punches

5BH) BIG BOSS
From here you have
can chase down the boss. When you get to him, you can just stand in front of him
and he will continually shoot bullets at you and you can continually shoot fire
at him until you win.
6) Tips
- Items come back if you run out. For example, if you run out of Grenade
Launcher ammo, then Ammo boxes will reappear in that area. The only exception
is Ration which would not reappear if you run out of health.
- Easy and Normal mode share identical item amounts and locations except when
it comes to Rations. In Normal mode, only the BIG BOSS battle has Rations
available and every other battle does not. In Easy mode there are Rations also
available in the BLACK NINJA, RUNNING MAN, HIND D, and NIGHT FRIGHT battles.
- When you get hit you are temporarily invincible.
- The timing system can be glitched, but the method by how it glitches and the
effects it has are complex. I don't understand it completely, but I do
understand it to a fair degree and will try to explain it. When you complete
Boss Survival you are given a "TOTAL TIME". Any TOTAL TIME that equals 98:59 and
above will show up glitched. I can't explain the glitch precisely since it can
change depending on whatever exact total time you recieved. Usually it will just
be the first digit on the TOTAL TIME that will show up differently. For
instance, a TOTAL TIME of 101:36 may show up as ": 1:36", or a total time of
198:54 may show up as "C8:54". Those are just examples, and may not be accurate.
I will explain some of the more indepths of the glitch such as how to get the
glitch to work and some effects it may have.
As you are playing Boss Survival, a time is being calculated as you play and you
can see this. If the time goes to high, it can be reset to a somewhat varying
number on the next stage. I've noticed the time reset as low as in the 60's in
minutes and I've noticed the time reset to "00:39" and "00:49". For example, if
you were playing the HIND D stage and the timer was 61:49 and you beat that
stage, then in the following stage (FOUR HORSEMEN) the timer may reset to
"00:49". If the timer ever reaches "98:59", it will stop there and no longer
progress for the remained of that stage and no additional time spent on that
stage will be accounted for in the TOTAL TIME. If the timer is on 98:59 then it
will always be reset to 00:39 on the following stage.
Even though the following stage using this glitch might start out at 0:39, it
does not get accounted to the TOTAL TIME. For instance, if you win the stage in
20 seconds, then only 20 seconds will be accounted for in the TOTAL TIME, not
59 seconds (39 + 20).
Using the timer glitch, you can get a better rank. It appears that any TOTAL
TIME above 60 minutes may have a chance of changing the rank and the rank change
appears to either be the fastest ranks (Either BIG BOSS (if on Normal mode and
only used 1 ration), FOX (if on Normal mode and used more than 1 ration), or
EAGLE (if on Easy mode)) or the slowest rank (TURTLE). I note this based slowly
on my own observations and experimentations. Other ranks may be possible to
aquire through this glitch. Also, any time above 98:59 always seems to get the
fastest ranks, whereas times between 60 minutes and below 98:59 may be either
the fastest or slowest ranks and I am not aware of a way to know which rank you
may get.
If you get a higher rank using this glitch, it can indeed overwrite your saved
data. For instance, if you previously had a PANTHER rank with a time of 08:15
and you then get a EAGLE rank with a time of C8:54 using this glitch, the EAGLE
rank can overwrite your old save data so you now have a glitched time saved.
This should not cause any problems with the save data, however, it may not look
very legitimate. Therefore, many people may prefer to beat Boss Survival and get
their desired rank without using the time glitch. This way the TOTAL TIME will
display normally along with the rank. A normal time of the same rank as a
glitched time may or may not get overwritten by a glitched time.
7) FAQ
- How do I unlock Boss Survival mode?
You simply have to beat the game once on Metal Gear and then save your data
after you beat it.
- How do I save my record in Boss Survival?
You choose the "BACK" option. If you did not play, or if you played but did not
defeat your current record, then it will not ask you if you'd like to save after
choosing "BACK".
- How come some of the strategies in Speed Run Walkthru are the same as the
strategies in Standard Walkthru?
That's because some of the fastest strategies also happen to be the safest
strategy at the same time.
- How can I contact you?
I don't want to seem rude, but I don't care to be contacted about this guide.
