1. Introduction
===============
Welcome to my Madden NFL 2004 fantasy draft strategy guide. The purpose of this
guide is to help you draft an effective team for your franchise. This guide
explains the draft mechanics, draft strategy, and gives a comprehensive listing
of good players and the rounds they are usually drafted.
The player listings are for the latest EA roster update, but should still be
useful for earlier updates as only a few players experience significant changes
between updates. The draft strategy is applicable to any version.
Suggestions, criticisms, or comments go to

2. How it Works
===============
The fantasy draft works by creating a draft pool of all current NFL players. All
32 teams start with an empty roster and choose one player each round for 49
rounds. Any number of teams may be human controlled, including none of them,
which automates the entire draft. When the draft starts the order in which the
teams get to pick is randomly generated. Note that the fanatsy draft order has
no relation to the college draft order. The team order is reversed each
subsequent round: for example if you get 1st pick in round 1 then you will get
32nd pick in round 2, 1st pick in round 3, 32nd pick in round 4, etc. This keeps
the draft fair and balanced and no team has an advantage over another after the
draft is completed. The draft is 49 rounds long and requires you to fulfill the
minimum 49-player roster. You can pick any player you want in any round, as
long as you complete your roster.
Specifically you must draft:
3 Quarterbacks
3 Halfbacks
1 Fullback
5 Wide Recievers
3 Tight Ends
4 Offensive Tackles
4 Guards
2 Centers
4 Defensive Ends
3 Defensive Tackles
2 Middle Linebackers
4 Outside Linebackers
5 Cornerbacks
2 Strong Safeties
2 Free Safeties
1 Kicker
1 Punter
After the draft you can sign free agents as usual but since the free agency pool
consists of everyone who didn't get drafted you usually won't see anyone worth
taking.

3. Player Listings
==================
This section lists the rounds in which particular players are drafted. The
purpose is to allow you to maximize the value of your draft picks by taking a
given player in the latest round possible. This information is most helpful when
drafting talented young players, as you cannot determine their value merely by
their OVR statistic. Age and years of experience are equally important with such
players, as they will often increase OVR by 4 or more points in their initial
NFL years. I once took Andre Johnson from 85 OVR as a rookie to 99 OVR by the
start of his 3rd season. Clearly he was a good choice as a round 5 pick!
Because listing every player in Madden 2004 is a waste of time and space, I
only list the players I consider good. Here is my definition of good:
Age Yr OVR
21 R 70
22 R 72
22 1 74
23 R 74
23 1 76
23 2 77
24 R 76
24 1 78
24 2 79
24 3 80
25 1 80
25 2 81
25 3 82
25 4 83
Any - 85
The OVR column is the minimum OVR that a player must have to be considered good.
So a 24 year old player with 2 years in the league must have OVR 79 or higher.
Brett Favre is good even at the age of 33 since his OVR of 94 is >= 85.
My goal is to list good young players (the kind I like to draft) and good
players overall (the kind everyone likes to draft). This system leaves out a few
good players, for example Quincy Carter, but for the most the players not listed
will go late in the draft and are not hard to get.
Pos = position
OVR = player overall statistic
Age = player age
Yr = years in league, R means rookie
Rd = round the guys is taken in, 1/2 means either round 1 or 2

4. General Draft Strategy
=========================
- Always take a player as late as possible, otherwise you are wasting a pick.
- Don't draft old guys since they will get worse and cost a lot.
- Do draft young guys since they will improve and don't cost much.
- For positions where SPD is relevant, try to get guys with high SPD since this
stat is generally fixed for the player's lifetime; other stats can be
improved.
- The 3-4 is harder to draft than the 4-3 since the CPU picks MLBs earlier than
DTs.
- The CPU drafts certain positions very late, use this to your advantage by
drafting that position right before the CPU starts drafting it to get the best
players. This also means you can focus your early picks on the hard-to-get
positions.
- Spend your early picks on on top players for positions that are difficult to
improve (OT for example), and spend your late picks on talented rookies for
positions that are easy to improve.
- When selecting a particular player, keep in mind what stats can be improved
through the minicamp. QB is a good example of this, you can improve THA and
THP easily, but SPD and AWR are much more difficult.
- In another vein, get good at the minicamp! Achieving gold on all-madden gives
your player 7 points to work with. This can bring many positions up 3-4 points
OVR! Proper minicamp usage ensures you one star player in each facet of your
game: QB, HB, WR, DE, LB, and CB. An offensive line drill is on my wish list
for Madden 2005.
- Plan your early picks; a bad round 1 pick hurts a lot more than a bad round 10
pick.
- QB, HB, WR, T, DE, MLB, OLB and CB are the hard-to-get positions. These
guys start going from round 1.
- Guards are easier to get, they don't start going until round 3.
- Defensive Tackles are a bit strange; they start going from round 1, but there
are still DTs with 87 OVR left in round 25! The CPU appears to pick the very
best DTs in rounds 1-10, then waits until rounds 25 and 26 to pick the rest of
them. This means that unless you want a top DT, wait until 24 or 25 to make
your picks.
- Safeties don't start going until round 6.
- Fullbacks/Tight Ends/Centers/Kickers/Punters: The CPU always takes FB/TE/C in
rounds 16-22, mostly in 20-22. Use this to your advantage by spending your
normally worthless round 16-18 picks on the top players from these positions.
Getting Olin Kruetz (C, OVR 96, Age 25) in round 17 is a pretty good deal!
Kickers and punters go in rounds 22-23; use a similar strategy.
A simple, effective way to draft:
1. Decide what kind of team you want (i.e. strong running game, strong pass
coverage, etc.)
2. Decide which specific players will fulfill your goals. Since you know what
rounds they will go in, these rounds are your "fixed picks".
3. For any round that is not a "fixed pick" just take the best guy available,
provided you can't get him in a later round.
This method maximizes the value of your picks, while creating the type of
team you want.

5. First Round Picks
====================
Your 1st round pick is your most important pick. Never pick a FB, TE, G, C, FS,
SS, K, P in the first round.I recommend only spending your 1st round pick on one
of the following players:
QB
Steve McNair
Peyton Manning
Daunte Culpepper
Michael Vick
McNair has the best OVR but is 31 years old. IMHO any of the other 3 are better
choices. Who is tops? In this case it really depends on how you play QB.
HB
Priest Holmes
Jamal Lewis
LaDainian Tomlinson
Clinton Portis
At 21 Portis is clearly the winner. Lewis and Tomlinson are tied for 2nd. Like
McNair at QB, The Priest has the best OVR but is a bit old.
WR
Marvin Harrision
Terrel Owens
Randy Moss
Moss, Owens, Harrison, in that order. Speed and youth are king, and Moss wins
in both categories. The funny thing is many times you can get Moss in the 2nd
round! This actually happens fairly often, maybe 33% of the time.
T
Jonathan Ogden
Orlando Pace
Tackles in round 1? Yes, either of these guys add a lot to your offense. Pace is
superior because of his age.
DE
Jason Taylor
Michael Strahan
Simeon Rice
Julius Peppers
It's either Taylor or Peppers. I'd probably pick Peppers because he's younger
and faster. If both of them are gone, Rice tops Strahan because 2 years is worth
much more than a point of OVR.
DT
La'Roi Glover
He is the only DT worthy of a 1st pick.
OLB
Derrick Brooks
Lavar Arrington (LOLB #53)
Takeo Spikes
LOLB #53 is the best choice. If he's gone, I'd take Spikes over Brooks.
MLB
Ray Lewis
Brian Urlacher
Ray's 99 OVR doesn't tell the whole story. It should really be 104 OVR (see my
OVR stat FAQ for why this is), but Madden caps OVR at 99. So he's really 6 OVR
points ahead of Urlacher. I think these guys are equally good choices.
CB
Champ Bailey
Ty Law
Baily is clearly better, but both are excellent corners.
Notice a pattern? That's right, speed+youth beats OVR.
Here are my personal favorites:
Michael Vick
Clinton Portis
Randy Moss (only if I can't get him in round 2)
Julius Peppers
Lavar Arrington
Ray Lewis
Brian Urlacher
Champ Bailey
