=====
Please don't automatically skip this section, there's some important
information here that'll come in very handy.
Anyway - hi there! I'm Darth Marsden, and welcome to my guide for
Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa. If, like me, you suffer from a form of
OCD which makes you unable to stop playing a game until you've
finished it 100% with every single collectable thingamajig game
developers absolutely positively have to hide in the most
frustrating places imaginable, then you've come to the right place.
Both Madagascar and its sequel Escape 2 Africa are guilty of hiding
some of their coins and pick-ups in the most ludicrous places -
they're certainly much too difficult for its target audience of 9-15
year olds to find. I blame the developers Toys For Bob for this, and
for having a very annoying logo that plays every time you launch the
game. It's not so much the video as the music. You know what I'm
talking about, right? Please? I don't want to be the only one...
Anyway, I couldn't find a guide for M:E2A, so I decided to write one
myself. I hope you appreciate it - it was extremely tricky in places,
most notably The Watering Hole. Wide open spaces and collectables do
not mix, unless you're a Zelda title. Still, at least it's done now.
For the record, I played through the Wii version of the game, though
I'm almost positive that the guide will work for the PS2 version as
well. I don't know about the PS3 or XBox360 versions, since I don't
have them. Bear that in mind. I also played through the levels in a
specific order, which influenced when and how I grabbed some of the
coins and monkeys. If you're interested, once I got to The Watering
Hole, I got the Wire Cutters, gave them to the Penguins, then played
their levels (Penguin Caper & Convoy Chase) before moving on to the
other character levels. Also, once finishing Rite of Passage, I
replayed the level and found all the remaining collectables before
going back and finishing Welcome to Africa, and THEN moving on to
the rest of the game. This shouldn't make a massive difference if
you're just trying to find the odd collectable or two, but I still
feel it's worth mentioning.
There is one incredibly useful technique that you WILL need to use
if you want to avoid replaying entire levels over and over again.
If, during the course of a specific challenge, you miss a bonus
balloon or such, then pause the game and select 'Exit Story'. Once
there, select 'Continue Story' to reload your game and arrive at
the beginning of the challenge you were at. This tactic makes use
of the autosave feature, which saves at the beginning and end of
every individual goal.
Since several of the challenges feature blink-and-you'll-miss-them
coins (grr), you'll probably use this feature a lot. I'll mention
it in the actual levels you'll be using it in, so don't worry if you
find yourself reading the same bit of text about 6 times. Not
everybody's going to read the entire guide, so I'll repeat myself
in places I feel I need to.
Finally, there's a problem with the game that while actually rather
minor, can seem quite serious if you're trying to track down every
single coin. Basically, the on-screen counter (the one that appears
whenever you pick up coins or come out of the Start Menu) can fail
to update properly sometimes, meaning that it shows the wrong amount
of coins that you have. Like I say, if you're trying to collect all
the coins, this can really send you into a panic!
The important thing to remember though, and I'll put this in
capitals so you don't miss it, is that THE ON-SCREEN COUNTER IS
WRONG, NOT THE ACTUAL AMOUNT OF COINS YOU HAVE. You can see the true
amount of coins you have by going into the Start Menu and selecting
Progress. To fix the on-screen counter, pick up another coin, which
will update and correct the counter to the right amount. It's a
nuiscance, but once you have it happen to you, you'll be thankful
that I mentioned it!
2) LEGAL MUMBO-JUMBO
===== =====-=====
I replayed the game, writing this guide as I went along, on the
Sat-13th-Sun-14th weekend of June 2009, and due to circumstances
beyond my control, I finally got round to finishing and submitting
it in mid December of the same year. I later updated it with some
additional information at the end January 2010.
I worked pretty hard on it, so don't nick it and try to pass it
off as your own. Finally, I'm only submitting this to GameFAQs,
despite receiving several requrests from other sites, so don't
upload it to your website if you are not GameFAQs.
In short... This file is copyright 2009-2010 Chris 'Darth' Marsden.

..and that's it. That wasn't so hard, was it?
3) THE ACTUAL GUIDE
=== ====== =====
Ok, brief explanation of how this works. First is the name of the
level, then how many coins and monkeys are in that level, then the
bit by bit guide to those coins and monkeys. You'll pick it up
very quickly. Trust me on that.
3A) IN MADAGASCAR
-- ----------
Coins: 100
Monkeys: None
COINS
-----
01-03 - Three bronze coins are along the path after collecting
butterflies.
04-08 - Double-jump off the rock to grab the silver coin.
The first time you play, it's actually one of your goals.
09-11 - Continue down the path towards Marty.
12-16 - Get the bonus balloon after the first round of kicking
footballs. If you miss it, you can just pause and select 'Exit
Story' to quit to the main menu, then select 'Continue Story'
to start the challenge again.
17-21 - Get the bonus balloon after the second round of kicking
footballs.
22-25 - These are on the 'steps' between the rings you jump through.
26-30 - This is on a pillar to the right of the path. It's tricky,
but you CAN double-jump to it. Make sure you delay your second
jump 'til the last second, and you'll just about reach the
edge, which you'llautomatically grab on to and climb up from.
31-40 - You get this as a reward for passing through all 10 rings.
They're pretty hard to miss.
41-44 - On the path leading up from the pool.
45-54 - After breaking the boulder, head back down to the pool. At
the bottom of the path, there's a green pepper. Grab this,
then collect the rest as you go up the path until you break
a second boulder. A gold coin lies beyond it.
55-60 - Swim on top of, then dive into, the second pool of water.
61-65 - As soon as you emerge in the next area, surface and swim to
the left. You'll jump out of the water onto a path. Follow it
to the left and jump onto the platform to find a silver coin.
66-68 - Underwater, just before the diving board.
69-78 - Jump high enough on the diving board to reach a gold coin.
79-84 - Under the water after the diving board - make a U-turn to
the left to find a bronze coin, then head to the opposite end
of the pool, past the arch, for a silver coin.
85-87 - On the surface of the water after the diving board - just
follow King Julian.
88-92 - Glide through the first bonus balloon while saving the
lemurs as Melman.
93-97 - Glide through the second bonus balloon while saving the
lemurs as Melman.
98-100 - Grab these three on the way to the 'Soccer' court.
3B) PREPARE TO LAUNCH
------- -- ------
Coins: 100
Monkeys: None
COINS
-----
These first few coins are on the first part of the level,
while kicking suitcases as Marty.
01-05 - During the first round of the suitcase kicking section,
kick suitcases into the appropiate sections.
06-10 - During the second round of the suitcase kicking section,
kick suitcases into the appropiate sections.
11-15 - During the third round of the suitcase kicking...
yadda yadda yadda.
The rest of the coins are on the 'Up to the Plane' part of the level.
16-20 - After walking across the first balance beam (just before you
tie the first rope), turn round and walk across the other
balance beam to reach a silver coin.
21-30 - After getting the silver coin, drop to the platform below
and cross the balance beam there to find a gold coin.
31-40 - Having tied the first rope and used the vine to get to the
ground (so to speak), climb up the platform next to Melman.
Rather then follow the path, turn round to see some platforms
behind you. Make your way up them to find another gold coin.
41-50 - Rather then go to tie the second rope, carefully walk to
the left of it and jump up to the platform behind it. Make
your way round the tree and cross the balance beam to reach
yet another gold coin.
51-60 - You'll get this as a reward for passing through all 10 rings.
These can be a little challenging, but most are in plain sight.
You may miss the last one or two if you go to tie the second
rope straight away, so be careful.
61-70 - You'll get 10 coins in total for bashing all the rivets with
Melman. Bronze for the first five, and a Silver for the last.
71-85 - Get a bulls-eye on each of the three targets in the first
round of traget practice. You may need to use the 'Exit Story'
'Continue Story' tactic if you miss one or two.
86-100 - Get bulls-eyes on each of the three targets in the second
round of target practice. Once you hit two targets in the
second round, use the 'Exit Story'/'Continue Story' tactic
- you'll have to replay the first round again, but given that
the alternative is having to replay the whole level again to
get back here, it's a small price to pay.
3C) WELCOME TO AFRICA
------- -- ------
Coins: 100
Monkeys: 15
COINS
-----
NOTE: The majority of coins are in the first section of the level.
There's another section, which you can enter once you've opened up
'The Watering Hole'. You can replay the level from the very
beginning, but you have to open up the path with Gloria. To be fair
it's pretty hard to miss most of the coins in the first section, but
consider yourselves warned that you won't be able to fully finish it
until later in the game. See the bit of text after coins 75-89 for
details on how to do this.
01 - This sole coin is picked up half-way through the opening path
with the scorpions.
02-06 - After the first vine, there's a silver coin on a platform
just to the left.
07-08 - One bronze coin is on the platform after your first Vulture
encounter, while another is just before the second vine.
09-18 - You'll find two silver coins on the platforms you have to
jump across after the second vine.
19 - Another solitary coin, this one's just before the platform o'
many vultures.
20-22 - Three bronze coins are in the first section you'll encounter
as Melman. They're on mounds, so get a good run-up.
23-27 - There's a silver coin at the top of the exit ramp. Make sure
you grab it now before heading down the path!
There's a bunch of coins on what I refer to as the Boulder Path of
DOOM™. I'm just going to give a basic list of them, rather than give
their exact location, since they're all on this one path and it's
pretty impossible to not actually see them. Getting them might be a
bit more challenging, but if you keep moving towards the camera,
you'll slow down and eventually stop, which makes progressing down
the path a lot easier.
28-30 - Three bronze coins. 31-35 - Five bronze coins.
36-38 - Three bronze coins. 39-45 - Seven bronze coins.
46-60 - Three silver coins. 61-64 - Four bronze coins.
65-74 - One gold coin.
75-89 - There's three silver coins in the second enclosed area after
The Path of DOOM™. Two of the coins are on mounds, so get a good
run-up. The other's right at the back of the area - you'll need to
roll back & forth in the U-shaped area to reach it.
As you may have realized, there's 11 more coins left to grab. You
can't do so on your first run through though, so don't panic! When
Alex has learned how to climb and you can use the totem poles to
switch between characters, come back to this level and you'll be able
to grab the last few coins, as well as the monkeys.
90-94 - Use Gloria to break down the boulder, then enter the Monkey
Caves as Alex. Once in, a silver coin's on your left.
95 - On the platform to the right of the one you land on after using
the first zip line.
96-100 - Right beside you after you land from the second zip line.
MONKEYS
-------
All of these Monkeys are lying around in the second part of the
level, in the area leading from The Watering Hole. You can't collect
any of them until Gloria bashes the boulder blocking the Monkey
Caves and Alex has learned how to climb walls.
Bernard - On a ledge next to a climbable wall.
Clive - On a ledge at the top of a climbable wall.
Barnsey - On a ledge at the top of a climbable wall.
Crispin - After climbing the first wall in The Monkey Caves, this
chap's on a rock being guarded by a scorpion.
Keegan - Right by where you land after using the first zip line.
Curtis - On a platform between the end of the zip line and the
climbable poles.
Tyrone - On the platform you land on in the middle of the all the
climbable poles.
Nicholas - On the platform you end up on after the climbable poles.
Dominic - Before you reach the second zip line, look down to your
left to see another platform with a monkey on it.
Earl - Just beyond the second zip line. Make sure you grab him
BEFORE using the zip line.
Wesley - Just to the left after you land from the second zip line.
Ellis - At the bottom of the climbable wall just after the second
zip line.
Junior - At the top of the climbable wall just after the second
zip line.
Russell - Once you're at the top of the second climbable wall, turn
around and you'll see the monkey on a platform.
Kenneth - In front of the exit. Pretty hard to miss, really.
3D) THE WATERING HOLE
--- -------- ----
Coins: 200
Monkeys: 30
COINS
-----
Oh, THIS'LL be fun.
01 - The first bronze coin is tucked away behind a bush in front of
those crazy Penguins.
02-03 - The elephant by the Watering Hole occasionally blows water
up through his trunk. Ride this to grab the coins above him.
04-18 - Each of the five crocodiles will give up three bronze coins
when you hit them with fruit. So... get whacking. Four are by
the Watering Hole and one is further inland, by the ridge
between the Watering Hole and the Penguins. In order to make
them give up their second and third coins, you'll need to
leave and re-enter the area so that they return to their
original spots.
19 - This bronze coin is floating just above the rocks behind the
elephants. Make sure you don't fall in the water getting it!
20 - Another bronze coin is at the base of the giant pole near where
the camera is/was. Not the in-game camera, the... ah, you know.
21 - A bronze coin is floating at the top of the climbable stone by
the beehive.
22-28 - Found in Marty's race. Run up the first ramp while boosting
to get ahead of the others and pick up 7 bronze coins.
29-33 - Found in Marty's race. Boost the second ramp to get to
higher ground, then jump off the edge for a silver coin.
34-45 - Found during Marty's race. Boost the fourth ramp to get
ahead of the others and pick up 12 bronze coins. Note that
if you boost up the second ramp, you'll completely skip this
one, so bear that in mind.
46-49 - Found in Marty's race. Boost the fourth ramp to get ahead of
the others and pick up 4 bronze coins.
50-59 - Found in Melman's clinic. Blast the silver coins you come
across with THE RED POTION™ to claim them.
60-102 - Found in Melman's clinic. There's 8 silver and 2 bronze
coins that need blasting with THE RED POTION™.
103-105 - There's four bronze coins around the giraffe herd. Three
are in holes, so watch out for them.
106-107 - Beyond Melman's clinic, there's another elephant with two
bronze coins above him. Wait for the water fountain!
108 - At the start of the path leading to the Lion pack, there's a
bronze coin.
109-113 - Halfway through the Lion pack, there's a pillar with a
silver coin on it.
114-115 - Near the top of the path through the Lion pack, there's
two bronze coins.
116-118 - At the top of the path through the Lion pack, there's
three more bronze coins.
You'll need to learn how to climb and switch characters to get the
rest of the coins.
119 - As Gloria, face the pole Alex can climb next to the totem pole
and turn the camera to the right. You'll see a boulder/red pepper
combo. Smash the boulder to reveal a bronze coin and Moto Moto
telling you how to spell the word 'big'. In case you didn't know.
120-126 - Head back round to where the Penguins are fishing and face
away from them, towards the elephant. To the left you'll see a
gap, filled by a boulder (it's there, it's just being hidden by
the draw distance). Use the pepper to smash it and reveal two
bronze and a silver coin, along with Moto Moto again.
127-133 - As you head from where the Penguins are fishing to where
they originally were, you should see a red pepper on your left.
There's a boulder that needs breaking to the left of that with
another two bronze and one silver coin.
In order to let Gloria get into the water without being immediately
chased off, you need to approach King Julian, who's next to the totem
pole. He'll set you the 'Conquer the Crocs' challenge, at which point
you'll be stuck to the surface. In order to submerge, finish the
challenge. Bear in mind that you don't need to follow Moto Moto
immediately - you can go do whatever you want. I suggest getting the
remaining collectables before following him to his suspiciously
bed-lacking crib, but the choice is entirely up to you.
134-136 - There's three bronze coins on the surface of the water at
the Watering Hole.
137-155 - There's three silver and four bronze coins underwater in
the Watering Hole.
156 - As Alex, make your way across the balance beam across where
Moto Moto waits/waited.
157 - After crossing the balance beam, look to your right to see a
bronze coin.
158-160 - There's three bronze coins in the area between the balance
beam and the zip line.
161-162 - To the right of the zip line, the rock slopes down to meet
the ground. Get up on the rock here to find two bronze coins.
163-170 - Head down the zip line to the the island in the middle of
the lake. You'll grab 8 bronze coins as you do so.
171-180 - On the island in the middle of the Watering Hole (at the
end of the zip line), climb up the pole to the top of the
tree. There's a totem pole. Change to Melman and use his
glide to collect the two silver coins floating in the air
behind the totem pole.
181-185 - Facing Alex's climbable pole, you should see another
silver coin in the distance. Glide over to it.
186-199 - You should also see a bronze coin. Glide to it and grab
the other bronze coins beyond it - there's four in total.
When you grab the last of the four, use the air currents to
get as high as you can, where a gold coin is hidden.
200 - From the tree in the middle of the Watering Hole, glide
towards the tree next to the zip line. You should see a
final (bronze) coin waiting for you.
Phew!
MONKEYS
-------
Albert - Once you're told to go and collect Monkeys by the Penguins,
this one'll appear a short distance in front of the Penguins.
Clem - You photographed Marty in front of this one. He's on a rock
in between the Watering Hole and the Penguins.
Nelson - Face the jeep where you go Monkey Hunting, then turn the
camera to the right. He's between the two bushes.
Bradley - This guy's sitting on the rocks behind the elephants.
Nigel - Remember that climbable rock besides the beehive? Opposite
where the Penguins are fishing? He's on top of that.
Duncan - Once the Rhino has broken through the rock, go through
and climb up on the right side. The Monkey's up there.
Igor - Caught while fishing with the Penguins.
Jed - Caught while fishing with the Penguins.
Jerome - Caught while fishing with the Penguins.
Marvin - Found in Marty's race. Run up the second ramp while
boosting to get to higher ground where the Monkeys are.
Simon - Found in Marty's race. Run up the second ramp while
boosting to get to higher ground where the Monkeys are.
Timothy - Found in Marty's race. Run up the second ramp while
boosting to get to higher ground where the Monkeys are.
Mitchell - Found IN Melman's clinic, somehow. Use THE RED POTION™
on the cheeky blighter and get him out of that Giraffe!
Carson - Also found IN Melman's clinic. Use THE RED POTION™ on the
sneaky little guy.
Collin - Tucked away behind Melman's clinic.
Rupert - Between Melman's clinic and the Lion pack, there's a rock
with a fruit on it. The Monkey's on the rock next to that.
Dwayne - Between Melman's clinic and the Lion pack, there's a rock
with a fruit on it. The Monkey's on the ground next to that.
Fritz - Between Melman's clinic and the Lion pack, there's a rock
with a fruit on it. The Monkey's on the ground next to that.
Dean - I'm not typing the whole thing again - it's in the same place
as coins 120-126.
Bronsen - On the other side of the rock by the fishing Penguins is
a pole. Climb it to reach the monkey.
Howell - Underwater in the Watering Hole. He's under the zip line
that Alex can use.
Arnold - Underwater in the Watering Hole. He's by the small island
in the middle.
Dale - Underwater in the Watering Hole. He's between the island and
Melman's clinic.
Alistair - On the small island in the middle of the Watering Hole.
Angelo - On a rock besides the balance beam.
Antonio - To the right of the zip line, the rock slopes down to
meet the ground. Get up on the rock here to find the monkey.
Bruce - Next to the start of the zip line, on top of the rock.
Georgie - On top of the island in the middle of the Watering Hole,
change to Melman and glide towards the large tree next to
Melman's clinic. Use the air boosts to keep your height up.
On top of the tree is a monkey.
Marshall - There's actually two trees near Melman's clinic. This
monkey's in the other one. Glide over to it from the first
tree you landed in.
Gilbert - From the tree in the middle of the Watering Hole, glide
over to the tree by the zip line. The monkey's on top of it.
..and relax.
5) PENGUIN CAPER
------- -----
Coins: 100
Monkeys: None
COINS
-----
01 - On a little platform in right at the start.
02-03 - Two bronze coins are in the area where the other Penguins
help you beat up all the lizards (by doing it themselves).
04-10 - In the area with two guards and six items to steal, there's
7 breakable boxes, each with a bronze coin inside.
11 - On the far left area, guarded by a... well, guard.
12 - Break through the box to the left, grab the tuba and break
through the other side of the box.
13-17 - There's a silver coin on the box besides the tennis shoe.
18 - On top of the plank to the right side of the area, above the
Footba... sorry. 'Soccer' ball. Stupid Americanisms.
19-23 - There's another silver coin on the right side of the area,
just behind the bike tire.
24-28 - Another silver coin is on the left side. You'll have to
jump on top of the box which held the bike horn to reach it.
29-34 - There's six breakable boxes in the area with the ten
collectables, all with a single bronze coin in.
35-45 - After collecting all ten items, there'll be a bronze coin
in front of you, and two silver ones on the boxes that you
need to climb.
46-75 - While riding the croc, there are several boxes that you
can break. 6 have silver coins in them.
76-85 - Still on the croc, roar at the till until it falls off and
breaks, revealing a gold coin.
86-90 - In Penguin Getaway, there's 5 boxes around the area with
guards. Each has a bronze coin in it.
91-100 - A gold coin is used as a guide to show you the way - it's
on top of the pile of boxes you need to climb.
6) FIX THE PLANE
--- --- -----
Coins: 300
Monkeys: None
COINS
-----
300 may sound like a lot, but once you realize how you get most of
them, you're not gonna like the developers ONE BIT.
01-02 - As you enter the level, there's two bronze coins on the
right side of the path.
03 - While flying the test copter, hover down to the ground just to
the right of where you take off to pick up a bronze coin.
04 - While in the test copter, hover to to the couch that's just
past the first landing pad to find another bronze coin.
05 - There's a bronze coin in the air just beyond the
second landing pad.
06 - There's another bronze coin in the air just beyond the
third landing pad.
07-08 - Two bronze coins are floating around the fourth and
final landing pad.
09-300 - Play the Chimp Change game until you win the super jackpot.
This'll take about ten minutes and you'll get bored of it
very quickly, but there's a little trick you can use which'll
make this much more tolerable. Once you've started playing
the slot machine, find something to hold down the A button
with (I used another Wiimote, but anything similar will do
the trick nicely) and the game will basically keep playing
itself. The super jackpot is won when the three bobble-head
characters are lined up, and when you do finally get it
there'll be a big celebration and you won't be able to
play any more afterwards. Don't forget to pick up the coins
that are lying on the ground next to you once you win!
7) RITES OF PASSAGE
----- -- -------
Coins: 100
Monkeys: 15
COINS
-----
The first batch of coins can be collected during the actual Rites
of Passage, as referred to in the name of the level.
01-02 - You'll grab two bronze coins while chasing the first Lion
cub. Cute little guys, aren't they?
03 - You'll grab a third bronze coin while chasing after the
second Lion cub.
04 - There's a fourth bronze coin in between the two balance beams
while chasing the third Lion cub.
05-07 - There's three bronze coins on the zip line you go down
while chasing the fourth Lion cub.
08-10 - Another three bronze coins are on the balance beam, also
while chasing the fourth Lion cub.
11-13 - Three more bronze coins are on the first zip line you go
down while chasing the fifth Lion cub.
14 - The bronze coin you'll grab while climbing the first wall.
15 - Another bronze coin on the first wall is on a ledge where the
vulture flies by (don't forget to roar at it!).
16-17 - While climbing the second wall (with the boulders), you'll
pass a U-shaped bit of rock with two bronze coins in it.
18-32 When playing dodgeball, you need to not only deflect the
mangos thrown at you by roaring at it, but make the
deflected mangos actually hit someone. You'll get a silver
coin the first three times you do this. It may take a while.
33-35 - As you climb up the third wall (during the obstacle course),
there'll be three bronze coins along the way.
36-37 - Still on the obstacle course, there'll be two more bronze
coins as you climb the next wall (the one that curves round).
38-40 - Near the end of the the obstacle course, there's two bronze
coins among the platforms after the zip line. Take care with
the third one, it's a little easy to miss, and you can't go
back and grab without starting the whole course again.
41-47- Inside the canyon, ignore the path you're supposed to go up
and head down between the rocks. You'll end up at the bottom
of a waterfall, where there's two bronze coin and a silver
one. Be careful of the fish, they sting like hell.
48 - Inside the canyon, there's a bronze coin right in front of you.
49-52 - Rather than follow the path to the left, head to the right.
There's two coins leading to the first platform, and two more
leading to the platform with the Monkey. Mind the vulture!
53-55 - After the first lion, jump over the gap and look to your
left to find a platform with a vulture and three bronze coins.
56-59 - After walking past the middle part of the waterfall, you'll
find four nooks you need to jump to in turn. Each one of
these has a bronze coin in it. Again, mind the vulture.
60-62 - Near the top of the canyon, there's a zip line. Halfway
down it, jump off to reach the ledge with three bronze coins.
63 - You automatically pick this up when you go down the zip line.
64-68 - When you jump across the waterfall to the wall, climb down
rather than up to find a silver coin.
69-73 - From the silver coin, climb up to the top of the wall to
collect 5 bronze coins. Make sure you avoid the creatures!
You'll need to re-enter the level once you've finished the actual
Trials and switch between characters to get the rest of these.
74-78 - As Gloria, stand at the totem pole and look at the level
entrance/exit. Turn the camera to the right, and you'll see a
boulder with a red pepper in front of it. There's a silver
coin under the boulder. Three guesses what you do to get it.
79-82 - As Alex, head from the totom pole to the path with a Lion
on it and jump up to the zip line. You'll end up on a
platform. Use the balance beam to reach the cliff, then climb
over the next balance beam with four bronze coins on it.
83-86 - Reclimb the third wall (behind the guy with the Hot Durian)
and then the fourth wall. Rather then go down the zip line
though, check the wall behind it - you can climb it. Go up and
cross the balance beam at the top to find four bronze coins.
87-90 - Following the last balance beam, cross the next one that
stretches right the way across the level for four more coins.
91-100 - There's five rings in each of the two sections of the level
- the cliffs and the canyon. When you grab all ten, you'll
receive a gold coin as a reward. These can be pretty tricky,
so keep your eyes open and make sure you explore everywhere.
MONKEYS
-------
I grabbed the first five monkeys during the Trials you automatically
go through when you first play the level.
Elliot - When you first start the level, he's on the rock right in
front of you.
Terrence - While chasing the Lion cubs, he's on the right after the
first zip line.
Mick - In the canyon section, ignore the path going up and head
between the rocks. The monkey's on the other side of the pool.
Connor - In the canyon section, follw the path round in an upward
spiral to the right to find this guy.
Finn - In the canyon section, there's four nooks you need to jump to
to climb up. There's also a ledge below them with a monkey.
Garreth - Near the top of the canyon, there's a zip line. Halfway
down it, jump off to reach the ledge with the monkey.
I grabbed the rest of the monkeys when I re-entered the level after
the Trials. The first three need Gloria, the other don't.
Cyrus - Directly behind the totem pole is a boulder/red pepper
combo with a monkey improbably trapped behind it.
Barringhaus - Head round to where the Lion pack is playing dodgeball
and look to the huge pillar in the center of the area. You
should see a red pepper. The boulder you smash with it is
behind the pepper to the right, revealing the monkey.
Stanley - In between the Lions playing Dodgeball and Musical Chairs
is another red pepper/boulder situation with a monkey.
Sonny - As Alex, head from the totem pole to the path with a Lion
on it and jump up to the zip line to reach the monkey.
Emmitt - From Sonny, follow the path of balance beams to reach
another zip line. Use it to reach the monkey.
Calvin - Climb the third wall (behind the guy who wants to play
Hot Durian) and then climb the fourth wall. Rather then go
to the right side, go to the left this time, and follow the
path round. The monkey's in front of the canyons path.
Mordicai - From the area where you finished the obstacle course,
there's a zip line. Ignore this - drop down to find a monkey.
Raymond - Reclimb the second wall (it's to the right of the totem
pole) and enter the cave to emerge on a ledge with this guy.
Archibald - Reclimb the third wall (behind the guy with the Hot
Durian) and then the fourth wall. Rather then go down the zip
line though, check the wall behind it - you can climb it. Go
up it and cross the balance beam at the top to find a monkey.
8) CONVOY CHASE
------ -----
Coins: 100
Monkeys: 10
COINS
-----
You should be able to grab these on any playthrough, whether you're
chasing the trucks for parts or monkeys. I got them all the first
time I played the level (after the Penguin Caper level) so I can't
verify this, but I'd be very surprised if you can't.
01-05 - There's 5 bronze coins in a line on the left side of the
road shortly after you start the level.
06-10 - Stay on the left side and keep your speed up - there's a
silver coin you need to 'grab some air to reach.
11-20 - Follow the road round the curve until you come to a hill.
You should see the gold coin in the air - full speed ahead!
21-25 - There's a silver coin on the left side of the road.
There's some rocks on the opposite side, blocking the path.
26-30 - Stay on the left side of the road - there's another trail
of bronze coins.
31-35 - When the road crosses the water, veer of it to the right
side. You'll see a silver coin on the water's edge.
36-45 - Reverse from the silver coin back to the road and continue
following it. On the right is a ramp - go for gold!
46-50 - After landing from the gold coin ramp, you should be on the
right side of a fork. Follow it to see another silver coin.
51-55 - When the road parts ways with the water, stay on the left
side of it to find yet another silver coin.
56-60 - Stay on the left side of the road around the U-turn to
grab one more silver coin.
61-65 - As the road goes uphill after the U-turn, head for the
right side to see - shockingly - a silver coin.
66-70 - Head to the left side of the road when you see the rocks
blocking the right path to find a tail of bronze coins.
Once you get past this point, the course will change slightly -
rocks that blocked certain paths will now move to force you down
them, and you'll end up going back through sections you've already
been through, only you'll be driving in the other direction. It's
worth noting that while the coins mentioned below MAY be
obtainable through the 'first lap of the course', so to speak,
it's easier to pick them up in the same order as I did. So don't
blame me if you do it differently and can't find a silver coin!
71-75 - After going down the path previously blocked by rocks
(mentioned in coins 21-25), stay to the right side of the
road. You'll come across, of all things, a silver coin.
76-80 - You'll eventually go back round the U-turn - only you're
going in the other direction this time. As you go back
uphill, stay to your left to pick up another chain of
5 bronze coins.
81-90 - When you reach the water section again, drive straight into
the water on your left. You won't sink as you may think you
should, but instead drive right into the path of a gold coin.
91-95 - Keep following the road and eventually, you'll come to a
U-turn that wasn't there before. Stick to the right side of
the path as you go round and you'll find - oh hoo flipping
ray - another silver coin.
96-100 - Follow this path round and stay on the right, as there's
one final silver coin on that side of the road.
MONKEYS
-------
In order to obtain the monkeys, you need to replay the level by
approaching the truck in The Watering Hole. You'll be given the
option to go hunting monkeys instead of parts, as you did the first
time you played the level. It plays exactly the same though - just
drive into the trucks enough times. Rather then give details on how
to collect each monkey, I'll just make a list of them.
1-20 - There's two gold coins in the water right behind where you
start. Sneaky sneaky Moto Moto...
21-24 - There's a path of bronze coins leading out of the starting
area. Four coins in total.
25 - If you get around 25 feet of air on the diving board, you'll
collect a bronze coin.
26-30 - If you get around 70 feet on the diving board, you'll
collect a silver coin.
31-40 - If you get around 80 feet on the diving board, you'll
collect a gold token.
41-50 - A gold token's behind the Hippo Bar. Hell of a tip!
51-60 - Behind the sun-loungers there's some rocks shaped like
steps. A gold coins at the top of the 'staircase'.
61-70 - There's a gold coin on the Juicy Juicy field. What kind
of name is that for a game, anyway? Honestly.
71-80 - Get a strike at the Bowling game to win a gold coin.
You'll need to re-enter the level once all the tasks are complete
to get the final two gold coins. You'll have to swim through the
Water Caves again (yeah, that's good level design), then get two
more strikes at bowling - each strike gets you another gold coin.
MONKEYS
-------
Dylan - Behind a boulder in the starting area.
Lewis - Behind a boulder in the starting area.
Tyler - Behind a boulder in the starting area.
Levi - Behind a boulder in the starting area.
Leo - Behind a boulder in the starting area.
Liam - Hidden behind the tree at the top of the ramp in the
starting area. Playing hide and seek, are we?
McGrath - As you emerge in Moto Moto's 'crib', make a hard left
and you'll see this guy in the corner.
Douglas - Resting on one of the sun-loungers, the lazy thing.
Marley - On the other side of the stream to the sun-loungers.
Probably looking on, wishing he was over there.
Anthony - Sitting at the Hippo Bar. Hope he's over-age.
Wade - Also sitting at the Hippo Bar. Do I have to ask for ID?
Gordon - Sitting behind the Hippo Bar. Is he on break?
Cameron - Behind the sun-loungers there's some rocks shaped like
steps. The monkey's on the second 'step'.
Arthur - Behind the sun-loungers there's some rocks shaped like
steps. This one's at the top of the 'staircase'.
Benjamin - Besides the pool, near the diving board.
10) WATER CAVES
----- -----
Coins: 100
Monkeys: 10
COINS
-----
There's nothing but gold coins in this level. Handy, really.
Keeps the collecting to a minimum.
- The first gold coin is near the start of the level behind a wall
- use the pepper to break through it.
- The second gold coin's on the right side of the second cavern,
before you give Moto Moto the pearls.
- The third gold coin is in a clam, which is in a nook on the ride
side of the tunnel after you bash through the first barrier.
- The fourth gold coin is also in a clam, on the right side of the
cavern after bashing through the first barrier.
- The fifth gold coin is, yet again, in a clam, on the left side of
the cavern after bashing through the first barrier.
- The sixth gold coin is again in a clam. This one's just to the
left of the second barrier you need to break with a pepper.
- The seventh gold coin is in, of all things, another clam. It's on
the right of the cavern after the second barrier.
- The eighth gold coin is NOT in a clam! Yay! It's in a small cavern
on the left, kinda hidden by the seaweed you swim through.
- The ninth gold coin is right below you when you enter the cavern
with the green peppers.
- The final gold coin is pretty much below the rock you needed to
break with green peppers.
MONKEYS
-------
Oscar - At the very start of the level, he's in a slight alcove
on the right.
Dennis - He's behind the same wall as the first gold coin. If he
was guarding it, he wasn't doing a very good job.
Wayne - Before you reach Moto Moto with the 10 pearls, this guy's
on the right of the cavern.
Gavin - This one is below Moto Moto before you give him the pearls.
Cole - After breaking through the first barrier, he's on the left
as you swim into a larger cavern.
Darwin - Right after you break throguh the second barrier, the
monkey's on the left of the cavern.
Damien - Also on the left in the cavern after the second barrier,
just a little further back, behind the arrow sign.
Adrian - After swimming through the seaweed, he's on the left side.
Ramsey - In the cavern with the green peppers, he's in a small
nook on the right side.
Hayden - In a cavern to the right of the rock you needed to break
with green peppers.
11) VOLCANO RAVE
------- ----
Coins: 100
Monkeys: 5
The Volcano Rave level is different to all the other levels. Instead
of a platforming style level like the others, it takes the form of a
musical minigame where you have to tilt the remote and nunchuck at
one of three different levels - up, straight or down.
In order to earn coins, which are given out in somewhat random
amounts, you simply need to do well in the game. The higher the
combo you have, the more coins the game gives you when it checks to
see whether you or the AI-controlled Moto Moto is winning. Since I
couldn't give you a list of coins even if I wanted to, all I will
say is that you can keep on playing all the songs until you have a
hundred coins. After that, the game will stop giving you any.
As for which song to play... I recommend you keep playing Angel,
because it has no lyrics and is therefore (to me at least) the least
annoying. You'll have to purchase it from the store, but honestly,
it's worth the money.
The monkeys are earned in a similar fashion. During each of the
five standard songs, at some point the icons will change to include
a picture of a monkey. In order to collect the monkey, you have to
get every single monkey icon. If you miss one, you lose your chance
to earn the monkey during that playthrough of the song. You can
replay each song as many times as you like to earn its monkey, but
once you've gotten it, you won't see the monkey icons in that song
again. If you're having trouble getting the monkey icons on normal
difficulty, there's nothing stopping you trying to get them on
easy mode - except your pride, of course.
You can find a different monkey in each song. They are (with the name
of the monkey first, then the song):
Graham - Angel
Chip - Dance Like An African
Oliver - Hulelam
Anton - Iko Iko
Sebastian - Shango
12) MORT'S ADVENTURE
---- - ---------
Coins: 100
Monkeys: None
COINS
-----
There's only ten coins in this level, but they're all gold ones.
- The first gold coin is right behind you when you first start the
level. Easy to miss, I know.
- The second gold coin is behind the crocodile you beat back by
spinning into the mushrooms.
- The third gold coin is in the air as you break through the jeep's
windscreen. You should pick this up as you go through it.
- The fourth gold coin is in the beehive section, after you break
through the first wall.
- The fifth gold coin is also in the beehive section, but it's
after the second wall, above the exit.
- The sixth gold coin is above the first seesaw. Stand on the
target and don't move when you jump to get this.
- The seventh gold coin is above the second seesaw,
same as the sixth coin.
- The eighth gold coin is above the third seesaw,
same as the sixth coin.
- The ninth cold coin is above the log. Clear out the detritus
in the ramp and spin to go flying over the log.
- The final gold coin is on the pinball table. Destroy both
flowers and it'll appear on the right hand side of the
table. Actually getting it is a bit challenging, but if
you accidentally finish the level, you can still use the
'Exit Story'/'Continue Story' tactic, so long as you're
quick. And if all else fails, at least it's not too long
a level to replay. Small mercies.
13) DAM BUSTERS
--- -------
Coins: 100
Monkeys: None
COINS
-----
1-50 - During the initial section of the level, you'll need to
destroy 10 huts with your plane. Rather then play as the
game wants you to, hover over one hut and destroy it, then
draw up your 'chain of monkeys' with the A button and hold
it there. Wait until the people have finished rebuilding
the hut (you'll know when this is, because the counter on
the top right of the screen will go back down and the
people will stop carrying wood to the hut), then let go of
A to drop your monkeys and destry the hut again.
You'll need to repeat this a few times, but when you
destroy the hut for the fifth time, a silver coin should
appear. As you may guess, you should now move on to another
hut and repeat the process all over again.
Use the 'Exit Story/Continue Story' technique once you
reach a suitable milestone (say, once you've levelled all
the huts below the fire), as if you try to do it all in one
go, you won't be able to get the final silver coin - as
soon as you first destroy the hut, the game finishes the
section and moves on to the next one, which means you'll
have to go through the whole level all over again.
Finally, a huge thanks to Ninja Lynneja for helping me out
with this bit! Couldn't have done it without her.
51-100 - At intervals during the second section of the level (where
you're kicking fruit as Marty) a bonus balloon will appear.
Each bonus balloon carries a gold coin, and there's a total
of five to be gained. I found it easeir to hit the balloons
with the Durian fruits you're occasionally given by King
Julian, as the Durians have splash damage. Don't worry if
you have any trouble hitting them, they keep going by until
you've gotten all five of them, at which point they'll stop
appearing completely.
4) CONCLUSION
==========
Well, that's it. My first finished guide. I'm so proud. *sniff*
Just a few little bits of miscellany left.
Revision History
-------- -------
0.842 - Final version. Guide is now 100% complete, thanks to
Ninja Lynneja, who handily let me know how to get the
final 50 coins in the Dam Busters level.
As for the version number, 8 is my lucky number and 42
is a reference to... well, you know.
0.616 - First version. I typed up the guide as I played the game,
so I know it's all accurate. Ish. Still no idea how to get
those last 50 coins in Dam Busters, but hopefully someone
will come along and let me know. Pretty please?
And as for the version number... it's the REAL number of
the beast. Seriously, watch Qi. It's an awesome show.
