II. Introduction

I wanted to make this guide to answer peoples questions concerning
Feeding animals and to “fill in” the gaps people seem to be missing within
the Animal Tome. This FAQ MAY CONTAIN A FEW SPOILERS but nothing big and
serious. All right then, on to the guide.

III. How to Feed Animals
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

Throughout the world of Okami, you will encounter many animals. You
can do them a favor by feeding them, and in return they will give you
Praise. In order to feed an animal you must walk up to them and press
Circle (O). This will open your item menu and you must choose the
correct Food Bag the animal wants which I will explain in the next
section. Food Bags can be purchased from any Merchants and can be found
in random breakable pots.

V. Tips & Hints
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

First of all, in order for any Animals to appear, you must revive
the Guardian Sapling in that area if there is one and/or you must purify
that particular area. Many areas require you to purify cursed zones or
clearing Devil Gates. I can not recall all of these areas since it has been
a while since I cleared them. Just know that you may need to purify a cursed
zone or clear a Devil Gate before some Animals appear.

I think it is important to point out that the PS2’s draw distance
for Animals is very poor. Many times there will be cases where Animals will
be very hard to spot because it is easy to overlook them due to the poor
draw distance. Keep this in mind when searching. They will appear in time.

Sparrows and Nightingales ONLY APPEAR DURING DAYTIME. At night they
can not be found or fed because they will not be on the ground. However,
the rest of the animals sleep on the ground and can be found and fed at
anytime.

Boars are found with Boar Piglets. When you feed a Boar, chances are
you will end up feeding Boar Piglets at the same time. They count as one
unit all the same, so you do not need to feed them more than once. Boar
Piglets can be found by themselves however.

There is ONE MISSABLE ANIMAL and it is a DOG. Many people have missed
this Dog. It is located beyond the Spirit Gate in Inner Yoshpet. I do not
want to reveal any spoilers, but if you are worried about missing it, just
refer to the Animal Tome section of the FAQ. I’ll give directions as best
as I can.

Earlier I had suggested that you do not receive anything for completing
the Animal Tome. However, now I believe that you may receive something I
like to call “Praising Yen.” Praising Yen is when you receive 1,000 Yen for
each point of Praise you earn. If my theory is correct, you receive this
once you have fed all animals (100%). There may be some other factors weighing
in, but I am almost positive this is how you earn Praising Yen.

It may be a good idea to hold off on digging up and reviving Clovers
until AFTER you receive Praising Yen. You can get a lot of Yen this way
which can help immensely for purchasing those expensive items/moves. Not
to mention it helps you get an S-Rating (Cherry Blossom) for total Yen earned
after you beat the game.

VII. Frequently Asked Questions
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

Many of the same questions pop up very frequently. So in this section,
I hope to answer some of them so they won’t pop up so frequently.

Q: Can I feed/interact with the eagles/hawks/falcons in the air?
A: No, you can not feed them. However, you can use a few of your Brush
Techniques on them to make them react. Power Slash & Galestorm are
the only ones that seem to make them react. Check it out just for fun.
(Thanks to Andrew Taft & Elegy)

Q: What about the bats? Can I feed/interact with them?
A: You can not feed them. But Power Slash makes them react. Nothing
     special, just for fun.

Q: Where are these eagles & bats?
A: The eagles can be found in various areas in the sky. Off the top
of my head I remember seeing them in Kamiki Village and on top of
Gale Shrine. The bats are found in a cave in Ryoshima Coast leading
to Madame Fawn’s house and also in the cave in Kamui.

Q: Do I get anything for completing the entire Animal Tome?
A: Earlier I had suggested that you do not receive anything for
completing the Animal Tome. However, now I believe that you may
receive something I like to call “Praising Yen.” Praising Yen is
when you receive 1,000 Yen for each point of Praise you earn. If my
theory is correct, you receive this once you have fed all animals (100%).
There may be some other factors weighing in, but I am almost positive
this is how you earn Praising Yen.
