Section 1: INTRODUCTION
Before I start, I wanna give a huge thanks to Josh Bossie (AKA J Boss).
His .hack Extras FAQ is what inspired me to do this. In fact, much of
the initial information came from his guide, and I am just building on it
and expanding.
I first heard of .hack in a review in GMR magazine. The game seemed unique,
and after checking it out on GameFAQ (the best site on the web for games),
I decided to buy it. I have been an addict ever since!
One of the things that got my attention is the Book of 1000. I am one of
those completist gamers, so it has been fun trying to piece together the
different elements of each Book. I have not quite filled in my book yet,
but this guide will tell you who you trade with, what they will have, what
viruses and items you can drain from monsters, and numerous other information
you never wanted or needed to know ;) Also, I will tell you what keywords will
help you find each type of Grunty Food.
Right now this guide only covers Vol. 1, but as soon as I get Vol. 2, I will be
expanding this.
This FAQ really focuses on the Ryu Books, but I also go into details about
other related subjects, expanding on the information you find in the Ryu
Books. Most of this information comes from my own exploring, but when I used
other sources, I give them credit.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Section 2: Frequently Asked Questions
2.1: What is .hack?
For our purposes here, .hack (or Hack or Dot Hack) is a four volume RPG
coming out for the PS2 in the US throughout this year.
The game is actually a MMORPG simulation, where you play as a kid playing
as a character in an Everquest like game.
This guide is mostly about Vol. 1: Infection, which came out in the US
on Feb 12, 2003
Future volumes:
Vol. 2: Mutation: May 7, 2003
Vol. 3: Outbreak: August 6, 2003
Vol. 4: Quarantine: November 5, 2003.
-------------------------------------------------
2.2: What is a MMORPG?
MMORPG is just a fancy way of saying Multi-member Online Role Playing Game.
These are games like Everquest, Ultima Online, or Baldur's Gate where you
engage in an epic world online with numerous other players.
-------------------------------------------------
2.3: So this game is online?
Actually, no it isn't. This is a simulation, where the game controls and
simulates the other players. But Bandai did a pretty good job here simulating
personalities for the characters you will team up with and encounter in the game.
-------------------------------------------------
2.4: What's the point of this game?
When .hack Vol. 1 starts, your character, Kite, is invited into the game by his
friend (a character named Orca). Orca takes him to a newbie dungeon, where they
encounter a powerful creature that Data Drains Orca, which puts Orca's player in
a coma in real life. Determined to find out what happened to his friend, Kite goes
back into the game to solve the mystery of "The World."
-------------------------------------------------
2.5: How do I find X, beat X, or unlock X?
This guide is devoted entirely to going into the Book of 1000, so your best bet
would be to check out another guide or the boards. Sorry about that!
-------------------------------------------------
2.6: What is the Book of 1000?
Book of 1000, or Ryu Books, appear as Key Items, and they are a log of
practically everything that happens in the game. Who you encounter, what
enemies you fight, how long you've played, among other things.
See Section 3 for more information.
-------------------------------------------------
2.7: How do I get the volumes?
Every ten datadrains will give you one volume of the book.
See Section 3 for more information.
-------------------------------------------------
2.8: What do I get for filling the Book of 1000?
You get bonuses like video clips, new background images, and new desktop
music.
See Section 4 for more information.
-------------------------------------------------
2.9: Do I have to watch the open book animation every time?
Nope. Just push O and you can skip it.
-------------------------------------------------
2.10: What about the Data Drain animation?
Again, no. Go to options, and turn off Data Drain Tutorial. I don't know why
it's called Data Drain Tutorial. I actually prefer it when the animation is on,
just because it gives you a quick breather during battle.
-------------------------------------------------
2.11: How do I get the rest of the bonuses? It keeps saying I reached my limit.
(asked on the . hack boards by OS 12TR)
There are only 43 bonuses on .hack: Volume 1: Infection. Later volumes of the game
(which will all be coming out before the end of the year) will have more bonuses
available to unlock through the Ryu Books.
-------------------------------------------------
2.12: Where can I find Virus Core ___ ?
As Helba explains in her e-mail, you get "A" from datadraining small
enemies, "B" from datadraining medium enemies, and "C" from datadraining
large enemies. All other virus cores (at least in volume 1), can only be
datadrained from databug bosses.
If you datadrain when you infection level is low, you have a
much better chance of getting a virus core.
If you aren't sure which enemies contain which Virus Cores, you can check
your Ryu Book (or eventually, when I get Book IV finished, this FAQ).
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Section 3. BOOK OF 1000 - OVERVIEW
The Book of 1000 consists of eight volumes (called Ryu Books I-VIII) which go
into depth about everything you could possibly want to know about your save file.
It will tell you what characters you've encountered, what enemies you've killed
(and how many of each), how many hours you've played, etc. The books are pretty
indepth, and I felt a FAQ which focused just on these books could be pretty useful.
How do you get these eight volumes?
Every ten times you use Data Drain (total, not in a row), you get another volume
from your bracelet.
So:
10 Data Drains gives you Ryu Book I
20 Data Drains gives you Ryu Book II
30 Data Drains gives you Ryu Book III
40 Data Drains gives you Ryu Book IV
50 Data Drains gives you Ryu Book V
60 Data Drains gives you Ryu Book VI
70 Data Drains gives you Ryu Book VII
80 Data Drains gives you Ryu Book VIII
Everytime you Data Drain, you run the risk of getting serious side effects
(like poisoning, confusion, or loss of skills). When you Data Drain, you
will watch your infection status turn from green to red. When you are in red,
if you Data Drain, you can even get an instant Game Over.
You can lower your Infection Status by killing monsters without Data Draining them.

3.8.1b: Grunty Types
Again, this is not from the Ryu Books, but from the Brady Games guide. Getting
the Grunty you want has to do with the stats you give it as you make it grow.
The best way to do this is set the stats you want, then "lock" them in by
feeding Golden Eggs to your Grunty. As you can see from the above chart,
Golden Eggs grow your Grunty without changing their stats.
Your Grunty's stats need to fall in these ranges:
Iron Grunty Poison Grunty
Size 30 30
Body Odor 3-17 0-20
Rebel -2-12 -5-15
Brutality 13-27 10-30
Intelligence 8-22 5-25
Purity -2-12 -5-15
While this might seem confusing as these stats overlap, DubbleYoo on GameFAQs
pointed out:
"I noticed that the set of stats that fit the Iron Grunty are a
subset of the stats that lead to a Poison Grunty. So, I'd guess that
any Grunty whose stats fit the Iron Grunty profile becomes an Iron
Grunty, and one whose stats fit the Poison Grunty profile, but fall
outside the Iron Grunty profile, would become a Poison Grunty."
Any Grunty not falling in these range is a Noble Grunty (with an annoying
French accent).
I've seen these formulas on message board (not sure who came up with them
orginally to give them credit), and tested them both:
Iron Grunty: 4 Piney Apples, 3 Snaky Cactuses, 12 Golden Eggs
Poison Grunty: 4 Piney Apples, 3 Snakey Cactus, 1 Invisible Egg, 11 Golden Eggs
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Section 4. BONUSES
So what do you get for filling up the Book of 1000? When you meet certain
conditions in each book, you can unlock 13 new background clips to use on your
desktop (Image 01, which is a shot of Kite is my favorite), 12 music clips, and
18 videos (which you can only watch after you beat the last boss, but don't get
too excited, they are only the videos you see during the course of the game).
To get these bonuses, just select the Ryu Books under Key Items.
-------------------------------------------------
4.1: List of Bonuses:
I have still not beaten the game, but when I do, I will report back what
each video clip contains.
By the way, my favorite combo is Image 1 and BGM 02. It's just fun to see
Kite's very own background, and the dungeon music is just awesome. Just a
interesting note, Movie 17 is slightly different than it looks in the game.
Instead of seeing a character get datadrained on Skeith's "Q", he just
datadrains an empty "Q".
You unlock the bonuses in this order, regardless of the order you get
each goal in the books:
BGM 01 - Field / Grassland Noon

6: CLOSING STATEMENTS AND SPECIAL THANKS
Well that just about wraps up this FAQ. As I said earlier, send
all your questions, comments, etc. to
[email protected].
And if you see me on the GameFAQ boards (Blackmore), just drop me a
line. I usually hang around the Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, Kingdom
Hearts, and of course, .hack Infection boards, though I am all around.
This guide would never have gotten done without:
My parents: For supporting my video game habits for all those years before
I got a real job, and for always at least pretending to have an interest
in my games.
My sister: For being my fellow video game junky!
Gina Altbuch: For the seven most wonderful years in my life. I love you,
Imzadi, and can't wait to get our kids addicted to video game and COOOMMMIIICCSS!!
Josh Bossie: Thanks for letting me use your guide as a starting point for my own.
Jeff "CJayC" Veasey: For GameFAQs! My favorite video game site on the
web!
Bandai: For creating this amazingly engrossing game!
Brady Games: Their strategy guide helped me fill out the Grunty section!
Thanks guys!
OS 12TR on GameFAQs for reminding me to mention the later volumes of the game.
DubbleYoo on GameFAQs for explaining the difference in the Iron and Poison
Grunty stats.
This just about wraps up this FAQ. I will be expanding this FAQ and continue
writing reviews for Game FAQs. Who knows, maybe I'll find time to start another FAQ.
