PART 1) INTRODUCTION
------------------------------------------------------------------
INTRODUCTION I: THE GAME
------------------------------------------------------------------
This eighth instalment is the most glittering jewel in the Dragon
Quest crown. And it's for PlayStation 2! If you have the game, I
hope my guide will be of use to you. So many RPGs are so complex
nowadays you hardly know what you're doing, and in all of the
previous Dragon Quest games it was difficult to know where you
were going or what you were supposed to do.
This is one of the most loved games of all time. Not only was it
the first game to get a 39/40 score by the Japanese magazine the
Weekly Famitsu, but virtually everyone who reviewed it gave it at
least an 80% approval rating.
Dragon Quest VIII (henceforth called DQ8 for convenience's sake)
has the best of both worlds, and hours of levelling up are more
pleasurable. There are a couple of things I prefer about the
earlier Dragon Quests yet those are no substitute for the sense of
panorama that the world of DQ8 gives you.
The graphics are comical and the characters are superior to
their earlier DQ counterparts. Square's positive input has
effected the style of storytelling considerably. The characters
seem less conventional and the overall artistic impression is a
lot better.
------------------------------------------------------------------
INTRODUCTION II: THE GUIDE
------------------------------------------------------------------
Yet another guide for Dragon Quest VIII ... I know, why did I do
it? I didn't like the game at first anyway. Well, firstly I'll ex-
plain -- this is no ordinary guide! It is so unusual because it
specialises in having the information that you NEED where you NEED
it. All information revolves around the walkthrough, with an app-
endices at the end. If you only need to see where you need to go,
what to do and how to do it you will find exactly what you need
with minimum sweat, man.
If you're finding it hard to locate something in the document
that will help you in whatever you're doing, try using the Find
system. Most word processing and internet applications have this
marvellous function already installed in their programme...
If you have a question or suggestion that you has not been
effectuated I beg of you to send me an e-mail carefully explaining
what should be there; I will duly reward you by lovingly enshrin-
ing your name in a certain chapter near the end of the guide (unl-
ess you want this piece of information to be held a secret). It's
ze_faq[at]yahoo.com.au.
------------------------------------------------------------------
INTRODUCTION III: OTHER DQ GAMES
------------------------------------------------------------------
What I loved about Dragon Quest V [despite the relatively poor
graphics] was that it had a close knit group of main characters
that remain loyal in love, friendship and marriage -- not only did
the game not end when a character got married you got to see their
child/ren being born at which time the game would skip to a time
when they could join you in battle. You got to control three
generations of characters within the same family throughout the
game and even choose main character's lover.
------------------------------------------------------------------
INTRODUCTION IV: DRAGON QUEST STORY
------------------------------------------------------------------
Once upon a time in a kingdom not of our own world, a foul enchant
-ment swept across the palace of Trodain. Sleep spread throughout
the castle and all the pages, guards, courtiers, watchmen and
noblemen were turned to stone where they stood. Even the dogs were
petrified in the courtyard, and the horses stood stock still in
their stables. The wind fell silent, and not a leaf, not even a
pinch of dust stirred in the castle.
The king of Trodain and his beautiful daughter, Princess Medea
were spared. King Trode transformed into a hideous green monster
wearing the robes of a monk, whilst Medea was turned into a horse,
an elegant white pony incapable of human speech.
If this sounded to you like Sleeping Beauty I congratulate you
for your powers of observation (and even more so if you noticed I
was probably being sarcastic). There is no Old Witch but there is
a bitter jester who was probably provoked by the oh-so-not diplom-
atic King Trode and ended up stealing a magical sceptre from Trod-
ain Castle.
One palace guard was saved entirely from the curse, as well as
his pet mouse, Munchie [who's cursed to begin with]. He is the
hero of our story... The guard, Munchie, and King Trode set off in
a caravan toed by Princess Medea and set of in the wild blue yond-
der in search of the evil villain who sought to bring down the
kingdom. There is more to the story than one realises, even when
one "finishes" it.
The story begins in a glade not far from the town of Farebury.
As the palace guard and hero of the story, you meet many friends
and funny creatures throughout your quest to discover the mystery
behind Trodain and un-lift the curse that has plagued it, though
there are a few sad moments for the characters involved. It is a
big wide world full of treasures, treasure-hunters and monsters,
as well as a quintessentially European landscape. The perfect
fairy-tale, is it not?
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=--=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
= PART 2) WALK-THROUGH =-=-=-=--=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=--=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
The basics can be found in Appendix A.
------------------------------------------------------------------
WALK-THROUGH I: INTRODUCTION
------------------------------------------------------------------
When you begin a new game, you'll have to name your hero (as the
game does not give you one -- well, "Hero" isn't really a name, is
it?). Think of your favourite hero from a story (or from real
life) and use that. Let your imagination run uninhibited through
the streets of your mind, and that's an order!
Now, there are a couple of things I'd like to tell you before
you embark on your epic journey through hordes of comical monsters
and even more comical voice-acting.
1. When shopping, get the things you need and if you've got
extra money to buy weapons, buy the ones that your intending
your character to be good at. Boomerangs are convenient but
weak and ultimately an unwise choice. Better weapons can be
found in dungeons, so for the most part it's better not to
waste your hard earned gold on them. Only get armour if you
find your characters' health is decreasing faster than is
practical. Success earns money but sometimes all it needs is
a little investment.
2. Most gamers I know like to have a long list of items and
things for every area in the game. I know it is convention
to list these things in the actual walk-through, but I myself
thought it would be more convenient to have it all in the
appendices in a chapter entitled "area data." As it is not
walk-through specific I can list what's available in the
area without having to repeat things too much.
------------------------------------------------------------------
WALK-THROUGH II: THE CRYSTAL AND ITS FORTUNE TELLER
------------------------------------------------------------------
.----------------.
Character Data
'----------------'
THE HERO (YOU!): In time-honoured Dragon Quest tradition, the hero
does not have his name, or even his own personality (the game
doesn't show what he says, there is a voice actor for him in the
Japanese version). He is a common guard from Trodain castle who
has [for unknown reason] been saved from the curse.
YANGUS: Yangus was an ex-bandit on his last heist when he met the
hero, whom he calls "'guv" out of a kind of respect reserved for
those who he feels are honourable. Yangus and King Trode are
mirror opposites of each other for they are both short, ugly
guys who love a good brawl in the pub. Yangus is more of a salt-
of-the-earth type, whereas Trode is completely vainglorious.
Although Yangus appears rough and tough, but he is kind-hearted
and sentimental in his own way. Like Trode he likes to have his
opinions heard and is stubborn to a fault. Unlike Trode, Yangus
eventually decided to come good and kick his bandit habits.
MUNCHIE: The hero's pet mouse. Munchie is unusually intelligent
and long-lived for a mouse (does Scabbers ring a bell to you?).
There are some parts of the game where Scabbers -- er, Munchie
can get into small holes and scurry around.
KING TRODE: Once a smug king sitting complacently on his throne,
King Trode is now only welcome in the monster world. This has
done nothing to stifle his pride, however, as he is still as
condescending as always. Though he goes at great lengths to
prove his eloquence Trode really is a tough old bastard. I'm
just glad he has ten times the personality of any king in the
early Dragon Quests. Like the Norse kings of old, Trode has a
flare for making weapons and other items. He is very protective
of his daughter, and will only feed her on the finest of grains.
PRINCESS MEDEA: King Trode's daughter, and heir to the throne of
Trodain (unless she marries, in which case her husband would be
the heir). Because she has been transformed into a horse -- in
other words, a dumb beast -- she pulls the caravan that hero,
co., travel in, ironically. While travelling in the countryside,
you often hear Medea snorting and neighing. The hero and Medea
have had a good friendship since they were children; she even
facilitated his career as a palace guard.
DHOULMAGUS: The despotic jester who seems to be the one behind all
people's troubles in the world, when actually he's just some
loser who's bitten off more than he can chew in terms of magical
power. He really is one of those evil, evil villains it's imp-
ossible to sympathize with.
.------------.
To Do List
'------------'
- Make your way to the town.
- Go to the pub.
- Go back to the caravan.
- Have a chat with the fortune teller.
- Go to his house the next day.
- Retrieve crystal ball from the Cave.
- Go back to town and talk to the seer.
- Now you can go to across the bridge!
.--------.
Advice
'--------'
Tips: - Whatever you do, don't buy Bandit's Grass Skirt, Plain
Clothes or Leather Hat! All of these can either be found
in the countryside, or dropped from monsters in the area
or both. A Leather Shield can be found in the town.
- Instead of saving up for a copper sword from town, get it
from the first level in the Waterfall Cave. It's the only
part of the dungeon where there are only Slimes.
.--------------------.
Enter the Monster!
'--------------------'
One thing you'll have to be especially wary about whenever you
enter an unfamiliar area is keeping your HP up, as monsters will
invariably have a considerably higher level than your party. Oh,
and don't leave town at night if you want to avoid the level 1~3
mortality rate. You'd best scurry off to town before the Reaper
catches you teasing him.
.---------------------------.
Getting the Bases Covered
'---------------------------'
Once you get all the dos and don'ts of battling down pat and
have an explore of the town, making use of the extremely useful
map, examining all the furniture you can, chatting with the
locals and buying a couple of much needed Chimaera Wings and
Medicinal Herbs; then doing the similar routine by nightfall, you
will begin exploring the surrounding areas and with that, moving
onto a headache that may plague your senses for the rest of the
game: When a character levels up, what's the best skill type to
give him? Luckily there is some room for experimentation and error
yet there are a couple of skill paths that you can max out without
being worried; Courage and Humanity.
.------------------------------------.
Skill-Paths: What does one Choose?
'------------------------------------'
The boomerang is more powerful than the copper sword until the
hero reaches level five. Boomerangs are great for targeting groups
of enemies at once. Boomerangs are Great -- NOT! If you choose
the evil path of the boomerang not only will your hero be too weak
to face the final bosses of the game, you will not have the full
power of the Dragovian King Sword, the strongest weapon in the
game at your disposal. And if you're only planning to take the
game to its official ending, spears are the weapon for you!
It's a similar story with Yangus and the giant mallet, only there
are no axes available as yet so it would be in-advisable trying get
a skill-set in clubs.
If in doubt, have a little Humanity and remember, Courage is the
Key.
.------------------------.
Advice on Levelling Up
'------------------------'
I advise that you level up to 5 at least. This will require 180
EXP for the hero and 171 for Yangus. That means 10~16 battles
before your party will be ready to face the Cave and its Boss. It
won't take long before Slimes will shiver with fear at your wake,
though if you're cautious you can wait 'til the Satyrs are scared
of you too. Now you are ready for the night hunt if you dare; The
Dancing Devils and Beetleboys found around the red tree south-east
of Farebury are good beginner food, and beyond that are the
Skippers and Hammerhoods found in floors 2~3 of Waterfall Cave.
The Firespirits drop Holy Water, which you can use to weed out the
weakling monsters as you look for fights to level up with.
.--------------------------------------.
Overview of the Farebury Countryside
'--------------------------------------'
The area you'll be exploring at this point in the game is
relatively small yet a good place to practise. Over the other side
of the valley from Farebury lies your first dungeon, Waterfall
Cave. I wouldn't suggest going there until you levelled up first
though [or at least not past the first level of the dungeon, where
the only monster you encounter are Slimes].
.---------------------------------.
Monsters and Where to Find Them
'---------------------------------'
Pretty much all games nowadays have their own bestiaries, so you
will be able to use this to view information about monsters you've
defeated. The monsters in this area are...
Farebury-west: Slime [d], Candy Cat [n], Lips [n/d], Dracky [n],
Satyr [d], Capsichum [n/d], Bunicorn [n/d],
Firespirit [n]
-east: Slime [n], Candy Cat [n/d], Dracky [n], Bubble
Slime [n]
-tree: Lips [n/d], Satyr [d], Bunicorn [d], Bubble Slime
[n/d], Firespirit [n/d], Mecha-Mynah [d], Dancing
Devil [n], Beetleboy [n]
.------------------------------.
Items You May Not Pick Up On
'------------------------------'
Don't give up on fighting Slimes entirely though, as they can
give you Amor Seco Essence as a rare drop. Dancing devils drop
chimaera wings perhaps more than any other monsters in the region,
though I'd suggest buying one each time you left town (before
visiting the inn & church).
There's a thief's key recipe you can get in town at the top of
the tower but you can only do so at night.
On top of Waterfall Cave there's a guy who'll give you some
cheese as well.
.--------------.
Boss: Geyzer
'--------------'
When you feel you're ready to take on the boss, prepare well for
it. You can't escape so it's do or die. All bosses in DQ8 are
big tough mummas [with accents to match!] so Yangus and his guv
will need to be seriously psyched up for the match. If you want
to be cautious you can have one building their tension up while
the other defends their friend. Guv is Courageous and Yangus is
the Humane; you make the decision.

PART 3) TUTORIAL
Thou shalt love thine NEIGHBOR and heal him often
Thou shalt always STEAL from thine unfamiliar combatant
Thou shalt never LIE about one's own ill health
Thou shalt never commit adultery on the combatant who giveth
one good experience unless there is good reason
Thou shalt confess thine sins regularly or how could one share
thine adventure?
Thou shalt forgive and learn to fight anew yet never forget the
thou weaknesses and the weaknesses of others
THE GOLDEN RULE: Do unto others as thouest do unto oneself; to
trial thine self with fire
------------------------------------------------------------------
TUTORIAL I: INTRODUCTION
------------------------------------------------------------------
This chapter acquaints you with the basic systems of Dragon Quest
VIII. It's easy to learn, but I suggest you have a look through it
anyway, in case there's something you've missed.
RPG stands for Role Playing Game. There are many different kinds
of RPG video game. If you're looking for a classic Japanese RPG
experience Dragon Quest is undeniably the best place to look.Other
RPG series' of this type are Final Fantasy, Star Ocean, Phantasy
Star, Breath of Fire, Tales of Phantasia, Romancing SaGa, Terrani-
gma, Xenogears and Xenosaga.
As Dragon Quest is an RPG, there are three different -- "modes,"
I guess you could say -- that are slightly different in terms of
controls, all of which help to achieve the overall goal of making
your party the toughest in terms of fighting.
In field mode you need to be analytical and curious of your sur-
roundings, as there are items and monsters needing to be found all
over the place. You'll need to examine pots, chests, cabinets and
other articles of furniture, climb down wells, mix alchemy recipes
and defeat monsters to get their booty. This is the most important
mode.
Battle mode is just as important as field mode, though its field
counterpart requires broader analyses. If you're not familiar with
it you would do well to read tutorial IV.
Menu mode is covered in tutorial III and although you could pos-
sibly complete the game without it, it would become that much har-
der.
------------------------------------------------------------------
TUTORIAL II: DEFAULT CONTROLS
------------------------------------------------------------------
Here is a run-down of all the controls in Dragon Quest and their
functions. It's basically just a summary so you can refer to it if
you're a beginner. Always keep a sharp eye for things that tell
you to press a certain button, for I do not list those things
here.
The controls are pretty much the same through-out, so I won't go
into the details (if there's an unusual button that can be used it
usually says so in the game).

Is there a soft reset in Dragon Quest? No, there isn't, for some
reason. The only ways you can reset the game is by saving and cho-
osing to "rest", or using hard reset, wearing the switch out on
your PlayStation.
------------------------------------------------------------------
TUTORIAL III: THE MENUS
------------------------------------------------------------------
In your normal adventuring mode you can explore your surround-
ings, open chests and talk not only to NPCs (Non Player Charact-
ers), but Player Characters as well. Menu mode is basically the
game's main menu, where you can customise your characters for bat-
tle, peruse your item inventory and do other things. In non-town
areas you randomly enter battle mode with random formations of the
local enemies. The following is a list of the main menu options and
what they do.
------
ITEMS:
As the name incontrovertibly points out, this is where you
see the items you've obtained and see what they do. Each
character has a pouch where 1 of each item can be stored in
up to 12 places. If a character's pouch is too full, the
excess items are moved to the bag. 99 of each item can be
stored in the bag, but they can't be used in battle.
- If you choose the Bag, you can view or sort its contents.
This is often a good idea if you have a lot of items. If
you want a certain party member to equip an item which is
in the Bag, you will have to select that item with the X
button and Transfer it to your chosen character. If there
is enough space in their inventory, the game will ask you
if you want to equip the item.
- Whenever you choose an item, a list of commands comes up.
You can Use it, Transfer it to another party member or the
Bag, Equip/Un-Equip, Discard the item, or Do Nothing at
all.
------
MAGIC:
Here you can view the spells which your characters have
learnt and use them (field spells, only).
-----------
ATTRIBUTES:
View your party members' battle statistics such as HP, MP,
Level, equipment, and spells learnt.
------
MISC.:
Of course, this is the menu where there are options that
wouldn't fit anywhere else (on the main menu, anyway). Not
all of them are available at the beginning of the game.
- Heal All gets the characters who know curative spells to
distribute the healing power amongst the party to restore
everyone's HP. This is a useful feature, as the game does
it in such a way that the MP is used well.
- In Tactics, you change the tactics for every character
except the hero. To find out about all the different
tactics there are, look in "COMBAT SYSTEM".
- Line-Up allows you to change the order of your party
members. The person who is in the lead (if not KO'd), will
be the one that you walk around as.
- In Equipment, you equip a weapon, shield, helm, armour
and accessory on any of your party members instead of
choosing each item in the characters' inventory and doing
it that way.
- Settings, as the name suggests, allows you to adjust
screen settings according to your TV, change sound modes
and volume, and toggle between camera modes.
- In Help, there are general hints and overview of controls.
- Battle Records takes you to the same menu you get when
you press the Select Button while in field mode (walking
around). You get to see your battle records, all the
monsters you've encountered, and all the items/equipment
you've gained. King Trode makes an observation here, and
you get to see how many miles you've travelled (I was up
to 49.5 by the time I got to Simpleton and King Trode was
complaining that he was getting old ^_^).
- Alchemy Pot takes you to the caravan (I'm guessing), where
you can create new items from your already-existing items.
- In Monster Team, you organise your monsters for battle in
the coliseum. You can even set monsters free if you like.
------------------------------------------------------------------
TUTORIAL IV: FIGHTING
------------------------------------------------------------------
------------
Introduction
------------
One thing that all of these games involve is the way that you
walk around large, monster infested environments (with many towns
that will for the most part provide a little respite from battle
mode).
In battle mode there are up to four characters with whom a comm-
and can be chosen. Battle participants have stats which determine
how they'll fare doing certain things, which can be viewed in the
status sub-menu.
Levels and "natural" strengths determine how proficient they'll
be during battle. Your characters can increase their levels with
"EXP" (which some monsters give more than others) but the monsters
can't. Every time you level up, a you can give skill points that
will develop a character a certain way.
You will have to do quite a lot of fighting in ALL of the Dragon
Quests to level up and get stronger and it's a pity that you can't
have monsters join your normal party like in DQ5, but there are
some nice digital "world map" scenarios you can explore.
After levelling up a bit to acclimatize to a new area and fiends
I tend to have a bit of a walk around, reading a book while I grow
stronger and frequently checking to make sure they're not dying.
You can set the cursor to memory in the configuration sub-menu.
I have looked up from a particularly gripping segment in "Harry
Potter und der Stein der Weisen" to find a cranky crew licking
their wounds at a local inn with most of my money run off some-
where. Try not to find yourself in that situation or at least form
a habit of depositing all your money in the bank before setting
off into the wild blue yonder).
------------
Troop Orders
------------
Show No Mercy: All-out offensive. All the most damaging attacks
and spells are used, but no thought is taken to psyching up or
healing.
Fight Wisely: A balanced tactic. Offensive and defensive are
blended together.
Focus On Healing: Not the exact opposite of "Show No Mercy," but
close to it. Characters heal themselves whenever they get hurt
not when their HP gets right down (like in "Fight Wisely.")
Don't Use Magic: This strategy is an MP saver; the character/s
only attack or use abilities.
Get Psyched Up: The character psyches up until they feel they
have done so enough to land a blow at the enemy. The AI guess
is right most of the time.
Follow Orders: You get to tell the characters what to do.
----------
Statistics
----------
If you're not new to RPGs, you'll pick up the battle system pre-
tty quick anyway. For those of you who have never played an RPG
before, here are some things you will want to get acquainted with.
HP: Hit Points. Your basic life force. If a character loses all
of their HP, they'll die and have to be revived before they
can fight again (you'll also lose a large chunk of your
cash).
MP: Magic Points. Like HP, MP runs out all the time if you're
not careful. It's used when you cast a magic spell or use a
technique.
-----------------
Giving Out Orders
-----------------
There are two sets of command menus in battle. The first is kind
of like a preparation menu, then there are the individual list of
commands for each character.
Fight: Choose from Attack, Tech, Magic, Item, or Psych.
Tactics: Choose an automatic regime of tactics for anyone other
than the hero.
Flee: Escape from the battle (doesn't tend to work if the
enemy is hard to defeat).
Intimidate: If your enemies are weaker than you, you can intimida-
te them by suddenly shouting them in the face. If they
are impressed they will run off. Apparently, there's
a higher chance of getting items this way. Here is a
summary of all the commands you get when you choose
"Fight".
Attack: Target and attack an enemy. You can equip weapons for
this command, so it's best to equip the weapon that
the character is best at.
Ability: When a character gets good enough at a certain weapon
(via skill points), they learn abilities they can do
using on that weapon. There are also abilities which
do not involve weapons, but you have to gain skill
points for them all the same.
Spells: If the character knows a battle spell, they can use it
with this command.
Items: Use any items that might be in the character's pouch.
Defend: Damage is halved by 50%, but the character doesn't do
anything.
Psyche Up: Each time you psych up, you become more powerful. The
highest level you can reach is when you get to a level
of super high tension. Once you stop psyching, your
tension returns to its normal level.
------------------
Traveller's Advice
------------------
You will have to explore large dungeons and caves, as well as
the Dragon Quest's expansive countryside. There are so many monst-
ers and as you progress through the game their levels will rise so
you'll have to fight a good many battles to keep up with them. It's
best to stock up on items like Medicinal Herbs, Antidote Herbs and
Chimera Wings before venturing into these frightening places. Only
upgrade your equipment if you absolutely need to and escape using
a Chimera Wing lest you get ambushed and have your work go to
waste. Be careful, because if you exit the town and it's night
time, you'll encounter the toughest enemies in the area.
Keep a look out for chests, especially on the world map. Chests
can only be opened from the front. Items can be bought, found or
made (not right at the beginning) and are a very important part of
any RPG. In Dragon Quest, items can be placed in your characters'
packs or in the main inventory (which can't be accessed during
battle). As I have already said, you should *always* stock up on
Medicinal Herbs, Antidote Leaves, Chimera Wings and Holy Waters
before venturing outside a town. Leave buying new equipment as a
last resort.
Do keep your characters' HP up at all times, particularly when
they're psyching up. I explained earlier on that tension is some-
thing that can be propagated over the course of the battle. Each
time a character psyches up they become more tense. In many ways
they become more powerful, but defensively they become weaker, pr-
oviding a contingency for enemy attacks that could blow away the
characters' carefully stacked house of cards in an instant. Sleep,
paralyses, curses, sudden death, being knocked off one's feet and
opponents covered in ice can all contribute to a failed build up.
I might add that no matter how disappointed you are you should try
again as soon as you are ready, for he who hesitates is lost!
Do NOT try to escape from boss battles as it is not possible. Do
level up if you're having trouble with a boss. Do use items over
magic if you can. And ALWAYS remember to prepare before you go out
fighting monsters. Is that clear?
Magic and boomerangs are useful for targeting a whole group of
monsters at once. You can make yourself stronger by psyching up.
The highest state of psych power is when your character is "super
high tension". Your character will be god-like, but be careful,
because if for some reason the character doesn't get to utilise
their state of tension, and you didn't get them to psych up, the
turns you used to build them up will have been wasted. Strategy
plays vital role in Dragon Quest.
-------------------------------------
Mind Your Status Ailments & Elements!
-------------------------------------
If you use the elements correctly, you can cause a lot of damage
to certain enemies. Unless you already know, in RPGs, some enemies
are affiliated with a certain element -- as such they will be weak
to a certain other element and the best thing about it is that you
can use this to your advantage.
- FIRE: Fiery enemies are weakest against water/ice.
- WATER: Effective against Fire.
- ICE: Effective against Fire. Also weak against Thunder.
The stats effect how well your characters do in battle. You can
change those statistics by equipping weapons and armour or using
certain items that raise stats permanently. Here they are (in alp-
habetical listing):
- POISON: The characters' skin takes on a sickly purple colour
and they lose HP at regular intervals only out side of battle
(each step). Healed by Antidotal Herb, Strong Antidote, Speci-
al Antidote, Lesser Panacea, Greater Panacea, the Squelch
spell or Purification (at church).
- ENVENOMED: Like POISON, except the effect is inside of battle
(every round) as well as out. The healing methods are the same
also.
- DAZZLE: In this state the victim's eyes become very irritated,
and their faces next to their names are clouded by a sinister
purple fog. Healed only by Greater Panacea.
- FIZZLE: The characters' voices suddenly become so bad in
condition that they are unable to incant spells. Healed only
by Greater Panacea.
- ASLEEP: When the victim is snoring away, not only can they not
do anything, their psych level will return to its original
level once they regain consciousness. The conditions wears off
after a while, but can be cured by a physical blow, a Greater
Panacea, or the Tingle spell.
- CONFUSED: The character does random acts against friend and
foe alike. Like sleep, it can wear off after a while, and is
remedied by a good physical blow or using a Greater Panacea.
- PARALYSED: Any tension built up is wasted and the victim cann-
ot move a single limb. It eventually wears off, though you can
use a Moonwort Bulb, Rose-Wort, Moon's Mercy, Lesser Panacea
or Greater Panacea.
- CURSED: In battle, the character loses a turn. If a party mem-
ber equips certain equipment there will be a permanent CURSED
affliction, unless you go to a church and have Benediction
performed on you. The hero is not affected by this form of the
ailment.
- DEAD: When the character has lost all their HP, they will not
be able to do anything until Resurrection is reformed on them
at a church or you use Yggdrasil Leaf, Angel Cheese, or cast
Zing (50% chance), or Kazing. The Staff of Resurrection also
does this.
----------
Conclusion
----------
Your characters will level up and gain equipment; they will take
their performance boosting seeds... Yet two things that will make
or break your Fighting Force are tension and skill points.
A fitting last word of wisdom in this tutorial is that battle is
all up to you; the quality of which will be greater if you know
the rules...which are more like guidelines, anyway.
------------------------------------------------------------------
TUTORIAL V: TOWNS & OTHER PLACES OF RESPITE
------------------------------------------------------------------
Towns always have an inn and a church, as well as item and equi-
pment shops. You can stay at the inn until dark or overnight to
heal up your HP. Go to the church to get rid of status ailments,
revive characters, determine how much experience is needed to lev-
el up, and most importantly, save your progress.
The "Church" menu can be viewed usually entering a church and
talking to the priest/nun on the altar. Sometimes it's a travelli-
ng priest or monk, though. The commands are as follows.
Confession: If you have a memory card in slot 1 or 2 you can
confess and record your progress. When saving over
the file, the game confirms whether you really
want to or not (which has, on a couple of
occasions saved me from overwriting Alex's file.
Divination: See how much experience your characters need
before levelling up.
Resurrection: Pay a donation to re-awaken a KO'd party member.
Each level costs 10 G, so if they are level 7 it
costs 70 G. HPs and MPs are fully restored as
well.
Purification: Healing from the Poison or Envenomated status
ailments.
Benediction: Un-equips a cursed item from a character without
destroying it.
Nothing: Leave church menu.
In earlier Dragon Quest games you could visit Depositories to
store items and money. Because you can simply store excess items
in the Bag now, the Depository has turned into the Gold Bank. If
you lose a battle and most of your gold is at the bank, there is
not much to lose.
------------------------------------------------------------------
TUTORIAL VI: OTHER THINGS
------------------------------------------------------------------
- Like in the earlier Dragon Quests, the game can reflect the time
of day it is. Early morning, sunrise, midday, sunset or evening.
Towns can change quite a lot depending on the time of day. Mons-
ters tend to be tougher during night-time for instance. You can
stay at the inn until sunset or early next morning.
- Save every time you enter a town, stay at an inn, finish a dung-
eon or see a long series of cut-scenes. I know may sound a bit
old-hap to all skilled RPGers reading this at the moment, but I
had to add it. You never know and like enough want to be safe
rather than sorry.
- Make the necessary preparations before entering any monster inf-
ested cave or keep (& they nearly all are); fully rested party,
herbs and Chimera Wings are the go!
- Decide what kind of character you want your players to be before
plonking skills wherever the mood takes you. The characters will
be weak and won't live to regret it.
- Try to avoid losing as much as possible and deposit your gold
whenever you don't need it -- when the church revives you it
takes half your gold... Hmph. Seems realistic...
- Monster coins dropped by infamous beasts are useful for selling,
especially when it isn't counted in the money taken away by
greedy churches when they revive you after losing a battle.Think
of it as a kind of portable bank. Other items that are good for
this purpose are Prayer Rings and Premium Mould.
- Prayer Rings can be bought for 1000 tokens each at Baccarat Cas-
ino and sold for 1500 gold coins.
- Most items (except Premium Mould) sell for half of their retail
value, so buy wisely.
- Check the in-depth on items before you sell anything; even if
something seems useless *that* can prove quite otherwise when it
comes to the alchemy pot. Good examples of items you may feel t-
empted to throw out or sell are old equipment. *Check first.*
- Plan ahead carefully in battles. Remember, an easy battle is a
troublesome bother (only because of the time wasted) that can
make you complacent for the tough battles that require the stra-
tegic nouse of a...well...a chess player!
- Talk to a cow and it'll give you Fresh Milk. The cows on the
outside of the Riverside Chapel have an unlimited supply.
- The Hilltop Hut is the best place to rest.
- Monster teams are extremely useful as they can help you in batt-
le. In boss battles you should call them before doing anything
else.
- Metal Slimes are the best monsters for experience, particularly
when they're counted as "new enemies." In the plateau east of
Goldbird's Eyrie is a place where you can fight Gold Golems dur-
ing the day and Metal Slimes at night.
- The Falcon Sword is vital for those who are trying to do the
Great Metal Hunt quest, but unfortunately the only way of getti-
ng them is via the casino (it costs 10,000 gold).
- Apparently a good way of getting gold and experience is intimid-
ating monsters and having them flee; their dropped items will be
rarer and therefore sell for higher prices.
- Magic is generally more cost-effective at healing than consumab-
le items. Give Yangus a few points in humanity so he learns his
early healing spell. "Heal All" is a good strategy to use, as it
utilises MP most efficiently (it's in the misc. menu). All the
same, sometimes items are better, so keep good stock of them.
- Fighting battles and levelling up are a big part of playing Dra-
gon Quest, so that's why I say it's better to lose a battle alo-
ng with half your gold rather than lose 10 battles. Explore the
countryside and level up till the enemies are no longer hard; do
that and you're well on your way to completing the game sweat
free (just don't overdo it, because you reach a point where the
enemies you're fighting give so little experience it just isn't
worth it). If you're a bit stronger than the enemies you're fig-
hting at the moment, the next set of enemies will be within your
range (decreasing the risk of being demolished and sent to a
churchin (my word for churches in DQ -- it sounds like a combin-
ation of church-inn and urchin). If all else fails, FLEE! (hope-
fully when you've still got a fair amount of HP left).
- I don't know if it's a good idea to always be updating your equ-
ipment, because Alex says you should always be saving up for
better equipment. The way I do it seems to work well; I explore
the region for items, then buy the equipment I need at the shops
-- if I don't have enough money for what I want, I fight battles
to get it (which fulfills Dragon Quest's need for constant leve-
lling up without too much worry).
- When you're fighting monsters, keep a lookout for those who may
be worthy opponents in the monster arena. This saves a lot of t-
ime.
- If you're innovative enough you probably won't even need to lev-
el up to fight battles... Or at least it will give you bragging
rights if you do. And save time you might've otherwise spend do-
ing virtually nothing.
- Take note of the monsters you're defeating and only fight those
who give you adequate sums of EXP and Gold. When you're level-
ling up you can refer to your menu to see how much you have left
and divide it into how many battles you'll need to do. To see
what monsters give the highest EXP and gold in each area, see
the appendices.
- Don't worry too much about levelling up unless you absolutely
need to. Even fighting Liquid Metal Slimes, it would take you
around 600 battles to to get to level 99. That's 60 hours of
pure fighting! Just fight and explore as you go along in the
story. And refer to my guide on skill points!
- When exploring dungeons, the path to the left or right tend to
lead to detours. Using this knowledge, you can take an analytic-
al look into these detestable places... In any case, exploring
these places should give you enough levels to defeat the boss
ahead. Just be really careful to bring plenty of Chimera Wings,
okay?
- Don't worry about using a Chimaera Wing to go back to a town.
Walking that distance and getting the chance to level up more is
better than losing your party in the attempt to go all the way.

Introduction
'--------------'
Each monster yields 1 common and 1 rare drop. See the monsters
that are available in each area in the "Area Data" chapter. As
for alchemy, there is a list for it in one of the in-depth
guides.
Items are a very integral part of Dragon Quest VIII in almost
every conceivable way, which is why it makes sense that this
guide should have a detailed fix on the subject...
There are 35 different accessories in total. All characters can
wear them except the Garter, which only Jessica can equip. ^_^
Whenever you buy an item its selling price is cut by half, but
there are some things you can get for free and sell at shops...

[6.01a] Alchemy
'-----------------'
At a certain point early on in the game you'll be able to make
items with two, or at a later point, three ingredients. Items are
easy to make because all you have to do is throw some items
together and walk around to it's done [and you'll hear a "ting"].
If it's not a good recipe the materials will simply pop back out
of the pot. Some recipes take longer than others, but you know
it's almost done if it's boiling. Once the making is done you can
only retrieve the item from the caravan.
For conveniences' sake I'm listing all the recipes you can do.

Alexandra
------------------------------------------------------------------
Though less fortified and stone founded than Farebury town, the
village of Alexandra boasts a large mansion where a very rich and
powerful regional family live. It's more rural than Farebury is
too; Farebury probably export their food from there.
Only residents of Alexandra village know how to enter the nearby
tower, which contains many treasures and a ghost (players of Drag-
on Quest V will be strongly reminded of a similar adventure in a
haunted mansion).
The Albert Family own the ferry and lighthouse in Port Prospect,
a pleasant little seaside town nestled in a sheltered bay.

Farebury town
------------------------------------------------------------------
You're typical parochial stone-walled town with a dumbed down pop-
ulace that very rarely has a bright spark; case in point is the
local fortune teller, who is forever on the point of giving up his
profession.

Boomerang has the best attack for any of the weapons you can get
in Farebury town and the surrounding areas but in the long run
it would be better to find the Copper Sword in the first floor of
the Waterfall Cave. I guess you could get the boomerang but not
level up the boomerang skill [as this is Hero's worst skill].

Slimes
------------------------------------------------------------------
There are several types of slimes; normal, supportive, metal and
knight. The normal ones are the easiest monsters in the game to
defeat. Bubble Slimes cause poison and supportive Slimes heal
their allies; both should be killed as soon as possible. Metal
Slimes have very low HP, very high defence, infinite MP and decent
attack/agility. If you manage to defeat them (which is very hard,
as they're always running away you get bucket-loads of EXP! The
knight Slimes are harder than usual ones, as are the king Slimes.
- Speed is an important part of battle, especially when hunting
Metal Slimes.

IN-DEPTH GUIDE V: SKILL PATHS
------------------------------------------------------------------
Each skill path requires 100 points, and you get a bit over 300
for each character. That means fully doing three paths and divid-
ing the rest as you see fit. Abilities and status bonuses aren't
as important as what weapons can be used, but they're elements
that can be put into consideration.
Hero's Path
------------------------------------------------------------------
You should be able to get up to "God of the Sword" Status by the
time the hero is level 28. With the skill point bonuses that he
gets throughout his career, the Hero should be able to fully
master about three paths and learn ten spells (though I won't tell
you what they are).
Sword: The most powerful weapons in the game are swords, so
this is a good choice all round, though not so good
if you don't want to bother with items. What's more,
Hero's sword path is better than Angelo's.
Spear: Only the hero has the spear skills path, and there are
some good spears out there. The Metal King Spear gives
only +17 points less than the Dragovian King Sword
and it'd be a shame to waste
Boomerang: This path offers more attack power with the use of the
weapon, but there isn't a great diversity of weapons
(and the strongest is pretty weak).
Fisticuffs: Offers the best attack power bonuses for fighting
weapon-less (+75), but even then, how can you beat the
Dragovian King Sword at +137 even if swords only off-
ers a maximum of +40? For Angelo it offers +72.
Courage: With all the abilities that are offered, it would be
crazy not to go fully down this path. Crazy.
Bearing that in mind, it's quite easy to choose what paths you
should take the hero on. I would choose sword or spear (depends on
whether you want to use the Dragovian King Sword, useful after the
false end of the game), fisticuffs and courage. Boomerang is not
recommended in any case.
Yangus
------------------------------------------------------------------
The best weapon Yangus can use is the flail of destruction, so I
would recommend building up his fisticuffs and humanity foremost.
Axes: Heavy Hatchet is Yangus' most powerful weapon other
than the Flail of Destruction; even more powerful
considering this paths' meagre 35+ attack bonus.
Fisticuffs: Yangus' weapons aren't very strong, and the ones that
are can be difficult to obtain; what's more, you get
80+ attack power for fighting unarmed with fisticuffs
(the most you can get with any character). 33 points
gives Yangus the Padfoot spell btw.
Jessica
------------------------------------------------------------------
Knives: With 65+ Attack Power awarded up to 82 points, 30
points will give attributes to Jessica when she wields
a sword. I wouldn't go up to the full 100 points pers-
onally, however. Jessica would be able to use the
Liquid Metal Sword
Whips: The Gringham Whip is the second most powerful weapon
in the game with 9 points under the Dragovian King
Sword; Jessica's attack bonus is 55+; so the total is
one point less than what you would get with full
knives. Swords and knives are more common than whips,
however... My proposal is that you do one fully and
the other a little.
Staves: A must-have path if you're planning on making Jessica
more magically astute. 100 points for 100 extra MP!
And of course there are certain spells you can only
get with things like staves, sex appeal, humanity,
courage or charisma.
Fisticuffs: Magic Burst spell
Sex Appeal: Spells: Kasnooze
* denotes spells that are only learned with a characters' specific
skill path. A character can only learn

PART 5) SPECIAL FEATURES
------------------------------------------------------------------
SPECIAL FEATURE I: FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
------------------------------------------------------------------
Q: What are the things that the Japanese version has that's diff-
erent to the European and American versions...?
A: 1) The menus look different, 2) Music isn't played by the Tokyo
Orchestra and 3) There's no voice acting. Instead of "Journey
of the Cursed King" it's The Sky, the Ocean, the Earth and the
Cursed Princess.
Q: What are the other Dragon Quests like?
A: I've played the some 100% Dragon Quests for Famicom and the
issue of Dragon Quest I & II that was released in the USA for
Super Nintendo, as well fan-translated Dragon Quests V and VI.
The early DQs were really just the same as what Final Fantasy
was like around that period except you got a maximum of two
characters in the story line and the controls interface was
clunky. To give you an idea of this, you had to open up the
menu and press "DOOR" every time you wanted to leave a room.
Everything happened so slowly and pretty much my only exciting
moments were when I fought Slimes [which looked far meaner than
their intelligent modern-day cousins] and got a torch from the
king [who saved your game] to enter a nearby cave. There was
still a certain quaint charm that stays with the series to this
day...
The Dragon Quest series was always popular and they had
already released many titles for the Famicom by the time they
finally decided to upgrade. I believe they were up to Dragon
Quest VI, which was being released as Dragon Warrior VI in the
USA. Reputedly Dragon Quest VIII was the first NOT to be called
Dragon Warrior in the USA. It's certainly the first to go to
PAL regions.
Dragon Quest V is possibly one of my favourite RPGs for two
main reasons. 1) You can recruit monsters to actually *join
your party,* 2) the character line-up is unique; very family
orientated. The game begins with the hero as a baby and ends
with him married with teenage children. But for some strange
reason all the mothers keep disappearing...
I've not played much of Dragon Quest VI but it's got the
prettiest graphics of all the Super Famicom titles and it's
interesting how the hero is really a ghost. I also think it's
more fun somehow than its sombre younger brother.

EPILOGUE IV: CLOSING STATEMENTS
------------------------------------------------------------------
For me this project has been a turning point in my guide-writing
career. No longer have I decided to fiddle around with ineffectual
lists and miles of extraneous data, but organise an efficient sys-
tem of research and compile only what is relevant to *playing the
game.* I mean, what's relevant about finding every single thing
about every single monster when you're only going to need that
data at most once in every game? I have strategical help for mons-
ter families instead.
Any volume of typed material takes a long time to get together,
but it allows me to become proficient at a game, while also
helping others to do the same. I hope I have been as useful to you
as a have to myself! Thanks for reading, and don't forget to drop
me a line if you ever spot something amiss. My e-mail address is
[email protected]. Auf Wiedersehen! Au revoir! Do svianiya! Good
bye! Oh and さよなら (sayonara!)!
