ChoroQ the games are based off the small, collectable Japanese toy cars of the
same name. Amazingly, unlike most toy to game transfers, the ChoroQ series is
extremely fun to play and the production values are very high. I've been
collecting the cars for years now, and I'm pleased that the games are so well
received all over the world. From the guide I wrote on ChoroQ's prequel, Road
Trip, I was pleasantly surprised to receive a ton of emails from people in
many different countries. I'd like to extend a special thanks to everyone who
took the time to play and support this series. Thanks for sharing my passion!
ChoroQ is the second PS2 game from this long running Japanese series to go
worldwide. The first was Road Trip, released in 2002 by Conspiracy
Entertainment. In Japan however, Road Trip is known as ChoroQ HG2, which is
actually the second game in their HG series. ChoroQ, released by Atlus, is
known as ChoroQ HG4 in Japan, and is the fourth game in the series. At this
point it is unlikely that we will see the first and third HG games outside of
Japan, unless this one sells really well. In case that made no sense to you
whatsoever, here's a handy list and history of the games:
There are over 20 games in the ChoroQ series, but most of them are strictly
racing. The HG, or High Grade series is distinguished for its RPG elements.
ChoroQ High Grade (Gadget Racers US) (Penny Racers PAL)
Release: Worldwide
Summary: Strictly a racing game, which is starkly contrasted by it's adventure
oriented sequels. Gadget Races isn't easy to find but the Japanese
version, (ChoroQ) is getting very rare. It's very English friendly so
if you can get a hold of one, you'll be able to figure it out no
worries. Problem is, I spent nearly a week scrounging through Tokyo's
many game stores and couldn't find it. I ended up finding it in a
package deal with a doll and an exclusive little ChoroQ car at a Jusco
outside Sasebo. If you live outside Japan, I can't really help you
there, except maybe eBay...
ChoroQ HG2 (Road Trip)
Release: Worldwide
Summary: Good ole' Road Trip, or as the Japanese like to call it, ChoroQ HG2.
This is the first of the High Grade series to be published outside of
Japan, and it's my all-time favorite. Road Trip was a perfect mix of
adventure and racing, and made for one of the most unique experiences
I've had in gaming. This one should be easy enough to find online, and
a few stores still carry it.
ChoroQ HG3 (Gadget Racers PAL)
Release: Japan & Europe
Summary: A lot like Road Trip (HG2) in many respects, but I found HG3 to be much
more difficult, and the exploration elements didn't feel as open as the
last one. The game starts off with a psychedelic tutorial that teaches
you the game's new features, namely jumping and power jumping. Yes,
you heard correctly. While I never berate difficult games, I do have a
problem when you must upgrade immediately to survive the first races.
All in all though, it's more of what Road Trip was, and that's always a
welcome thing. Once again, good luck finding it if you don't live in
Japan, though HG3 is a fairly recent release and easy to find in Japan.
ChoroQ HG4 (ChoroQ)
Release: Japan & US (so far...)
Summary: What Atlus dubbed ChoroQ, is actually not the Japanese ChoroQ.
It is in fact ChoroQ HG4. HG4 is another radical departure for the
series as our viewpoint switches to an RC-car view when driving around.
Thankfully, races are done the same way you're used to. What you may
not be used to, however, is a more prominent story and a plethora of
races and modes. HG4 really has the most racing content out of series
and still retains much of what we loved about Road Trip. Still, I
like Road Trip's world better and will always be biased towards that
game. ChoroQ (HG4) is now an easy find in Japan and elsewhere, and
it's only $15, so what are you waiting for?

Anyone new to the ChoroQ series should read these quick notes:
- Upgrades are the key to winning races. Upgrade early and often.
- At first you won't have much money. Stick with performance upgrades over
style until you get a good cash flow coming in.
- Explore! This isn't your standard racing game, take time to check out the
town and even enter other car's houses by driving into the doors.
- To talk with other cars, simply run into them.
- Some cars may give you parts or upgrades if you talk to or help them.
Be sure to talk with everyone!
- Equip off-road tires on non-paved courses or you'll be sliding all over.
- Check your mailbox often.
- Try your hand at some of the mini-games. They're fun and rewarding.
- Have fun! ChoroQ is all about fun, so don't forget to smile!
If anyone would like to add some advice to give to new players, email me!

STARTING UP...
Choose from one of three houses. (Blue / Green / Pink)
The choice is purely cosmetic, so go with whatever suits you best.
Next you select your gender (Male / Female) and month of birth (1-12)
Then choose one of three key-holders (Arc de Triumph / Race Car / Teddy Bear)
Now for the fun part. Choose from one of the six starting car models.
(ChoroQ 001-006) I chose to pimp out in the purple three-wheeler.
Just when you think it's over, it's time to enter your name. My game's
Japanese so I won't bother trying to guess what text options/symbols the
English version will have, but I'm sure you'll be able to use all kinds of
symbols to form whatever crazy name you want.
And now it's finally time to start the game...after a few short intros that is.

/ High Speed Oval \_____________________________________________________________
This small and simple course is fully-paved, so don't be afraid to bring out the
racing tires. The focus is on speed and careful passing strategies. There are
no surprises here, so your only worry should be staying ahead of the pack and
off the walls.
S-Version
On-Road : * * * * *
Off-Road:
As far as strategy goes, speed is really the key here. You need only little
handling ability to make it around the wide turns here. Racing tires save the
day here, so be sure to equip them!
M-Version
On-Road : * * * * *
Off-Road:
The sun's gone down but the lights are shining bright on a course you hardly
even need to see to navigate. This is an all out speed race, and racing tires
are a must.
L-Version
On-Road : * * * * *
Off-Road:
This is the longest version of the course, but it really isn't much different.
The turns are a little sharper than before, but even a massive battleship could
make it around with ease. Well, maybe not, but your primary focus is on speed!
__________________
/ Seaside Paradise \____________________________________________________________
This bright and cheery raceway is anything but a vacation. You have your work
cut out for you navigating winding roads, half-circle turns and a sharp hairpin.
Thankfully, the action stays on the course, keeping your car clean and racing
tires equipped.
S-Version
On-Road : * * * * *
Off-Road:
This course is pretty standard fare, save for the hairpin turn at the
cruise-liner. Do your best to stay on the road, because sand and grass will
greatly slow you down when equipped with racing tires, which is what you should
be using.
M-Version
On-Road : * * * * *
Off-Road:
All the fun of the S-Version, but this time a bridge, forested area and another
fairly sharp turn have been added. The bridge adds no difficulty to this, nor
does the area with trees. If you have opponents ahead of you coming into the
turn at the houses, don't slow down. Instead, as they slow down to take the
turn in their nice little programmed way, slam into their side and barrel
through the turn. Keep in mind a missed or bad shot can result in a spinout, a
meeting with a rail or both.
L-Version
On-Road : * * * * *
Off-Road:
Yikes, this version of the course is long and windy. It adds a section where
you must take four half circle turns consecutively. Here's a stupid drawing of
what I mean: v^v^ Impressive, isn't it? Anyhow, you're going to need moderate
steering capabilities in this course or you'll suffer a major loss of time in
those four squiggly intestine-shaped turns.

Forget the fact that there's a short strip of off-road section in this course.
Go fully racing tires and you'll do just fine. The best place to gain time on

/ Cliff Drifting \______________________________________________________________
Explanation:
A harrowing race along a cliffside road. The object is to stay on the road
and reach the finish before your opponent.
Tips:
Don't go too fast and encourage your friend to try and knock you off the
cliff. When they go for you, hit the brakes and they'll go flying over the
edge. This is the most awesome minigame to play with friends because you can
be so sinister!

/ Package Collector \___________________________________________________________
Explanation:
Drive up to houses with flags by their doors and collect packages. Collect 3
to win!
Tips:
You must back in to the flags (reverse) so that the packages go in your
trunk. Just running into them won't do the trick. Also, don't lose track of
your opponent.

_________
/ Fishing \_____________________________________________________________________
Explanation:
This is a fishing minigame, and one of the most complex. You have three new
things that will appear on the screen. The bar in the upper-right portion of
the screen is a distance/wait meter. It is NOT a tension meter like in other
fishing games, so don't worry about breaking your line. Cast your line with
(Circle) and wait until a fish icon appears with a light-bulb over its head.
Then press (Circle) some more until the fish becomes interested and
eventually bites. When it bites, the fish will appear near the top of the
screen. Pound away at the (Circle) button until the meter fills. When it's
full, you've caught the fish. After catching one, you have to wait a sec for
the meter to cool down before casting again. Whoever catches the most fish
before the timer runs out wins!
Tips:
You can't fall off the edge! Drive as fast as you want to the fishing spot.

/ Rice Planting \_______________________________________________________________
Explanation:
The rice planting game! As you go back and forth through the fields,
repeatedly tap circle to plant small patches of rice. Whoever plants all
their rice first or has the most planted when the time runs out wins!
Tips:
Uh, press circle really fast while the red lights are up. Keep moving, and
that's about it.

___________
/ Slot Cars \___________________________________________________________________
Explanation:
Hold up on the right analog stick to accelerate. No turning is necessary.
Cars follow a predetermined track. The analog stick is pressure sensitive,
so however hard you push it up will be how fast your little car goes. Go too
fast around corners and you may fly off the track, losing valuable time!
Complete 10 laps around the track to win!
Tips:
Don't worry too much about flying off the track, but let off the gas when
nearing corners.
Nihongo Description:

____________
/ Wreck Game \__________________________________________________________________
Explanation:
In this mini-game, you act as a tow truck for wrecked cars. Run into a
wrecked car to start towing it. Then drive it back to the building with the
green spinning thing in front of it. If you drive too fast with the car in
tow, and the meter fills up, you "drop" the car. If your opponent hits you
while towing, your meter will jump a little. Secure just one car to win.
Tips:
Tap the accelerator to keep the bar close to being full without completely
filling it. This will be much faster than if you hold the gas, left off, and
so on.

_______________
/ Haunted House \_______________________________________________________________
Explanation:
A spooky old mansion is the setting for this coin collecting game. This
should be real nostalgic for all the Road Trip fans. Collect 10 coins or
have the most coins when the timer runs out to win!
Tips:
If you're faster than your friend, collect coins on a different floor. This
way you won't have to worry about duking it out, although that's always more
fun and satisfying. ^_^
Nihongo Description:
yuureiyashikino, tansakudesu. yashikinaini, chirabatta, [Qjika] o,
sagashidasou! yashikiniwa, 20kono, [Qjika] gaaruyo. sakini, 10ko, atsumetar,

_________
/ Port 04 \_____________________________________________________________________
Explanation:
Hmm, it seems this minigame is misnamed. Port 04, or rather Bay 13 is the
stage for a daring game of chicken! Road Trip fans will once again be
nostalgic. Race for the edge of the dock, and hit the brakes so that your car
stops close to the edge without falling in.
Tips:
You aren't penalized for hitting cones, so use the last two to slow you down.
