* 1. Introduction [0001]
**************************************************************************/
Why write an Erudite Wizard FAQ? Well, because I like the wizard class
and while I've seen class guides for the Ranger and Shadow Knight, I
haven't seen one for the Erudite Wizard yet.
/**************************************************************************
* 2. Basic Information [0002]
**************************************************************************/
The Erudite Wizard is first and foremost a blaster character. Most of your
abilities are ranged magical attacks, though you have a few other abilities
thrown in as well. As a wizard, you excel at killing your enemies at range,
and if you play your cards right, you will eventually become the master of
crowd control.
Melee is not your friend, excepting magic items with hit point bonuses
(and other wizards) you will likely have the lowest hit point total in
any group of characters. You get two thirds of the hit points of the
Barbarian Warrior, and even if you put all of your stat points in stamina,
it's only going to buy you extra hit points and half per level, leaving
you with a four and a half short fall. So your best option is not to get
hurt.
In single player mode, especially in the early game, and against bosses,
you will have to learn the art of hit and run and dodging. Against
powerful enemies, you won't be able to kill them before they reach you and
you won't have the hit points to absorb the damage they can dish out.
Lastly, in many ways wizard get the short end of the stick in this game,
wizards are the only ones who can't use shields, and like the cleric, you
can only use potions as ranged weapons. You also have you own distinct
type of armour and in multiplayer games your armour will be available much
less often than everyone else's. You are forewarned, playing a wizard
takes skill, and you've got to be better than everyone else to keep up.
/**************************************************************************
* 3. Allocating Abilities [0003]
**************************************************************************/
When starting a new character you need intelligence. In the mid game
you'll need intelligence, and in endgame you'll still need intelligence.
The reason is simple, almost all of your abilities are powered by mana.
Intelligence gets you more mana and increases your mana regeneration rate.
Each point of intelligence will give you one half point of mana and
increase your mana regeneration by one half point per minute (before
concentration and equipment). Remember, a higher intelligence means you
can use your abilities more frequently and you can kill more monsters.
If you are playing solo, you may be tempted to put some ability points into
stamina to help you survive the worst blows from some of the tougher bosses,
however, I recommend against it. The hit point payoff is small, one half
hit point per ability point, and in the long run you can get a maximum of
75 extra hit points out it, and that's not much compared to the 600 hit
points you'll eventually have anyway. That's probably not going to pay
off very much. If you watch the bosses and learn their patterns, you should
be able to beat most bosses without taking much, or often any, damage. I
also recommend against putting any points into either dexterity (You have
no ranged weapons) or strength (you do not want to get into melee). Though,
you'll probably want to keep some strength items around so that you can
equipment back to the store, especially in a single player game.
/**************************************************************************
* 4. Skills [0004]
**************************************************************************/
Like all characters as you proceed towards level 50, you will receive
169 skill points, that's enough for you to max out exactly 8 skills if you
spend those points wisely. The trouble is, you have a few more skills than
that, and you have more choices than any other class. Most classes have
obvious skills they have to max out to be effective, you can choose many
different combinations some of which are much more effective than others.
So before you can choose you must become familiar with each of your skills.
1. Blunt Weapons
You automatically get one rank in this skill. That's all you should ever
melee is dangerous and you could get killed, unless you want to purposely
handicap yourself by making a Warrior-Wizard (see Section 5).
2. Concentration
This is your single most important skill, it increases your mana
regeneration rate independently from your equipment and makes each
point of intelligence worth that much more. I recommend you always
keep this ability at the maximum you are allowed to have. It will max out
at 420%, that means every point of Int is going to regenerate 2 points of
mana per second, before counting your equipment. With an Int in the 200
range, you'll be getting back at least 800 mana per minute. That's
enough to allow you to blast your favourite spells whenever you want.
3. Shock of Frost
This is a great skill, you start with a rank in it, making it your first
projective spell, it's cold so it slows most enemies down, and at higher
levels it shoots shards out that may hit other creatures. The shard
ability allows you to shoot around corners and if you shoot wisely, you
can often kill your enemies before they appear on screen.
Be warned, though that some monsters are immune to damage from this spell,
even though the game will list damage for them. Don't try to kill
skeletons with this or any other cold ability, or you'll end up quite dead.
4. Bolt of Shock
This skill should be good, but it's not that great. Though the damage
is better than frost bolt, it costs almost six times what Shock of Frost
costs at the lower levels and tops out at 2.5 times the cost, but the
damage is nowhere near as high. Essentially, you pay a large premium
to dish out a little damage faster. At the lower levels it's more cost
effective to fire Bolt of Shock twice, at the higher levels you'll
probably get better use from Shock of Fire.
The one advantage this spell has is that it inflicts full damage to each
of its targets when it chains, thus it may be more effective against
large groups.
5. Frost Storm
Honestly, I don't use this spell much, it can be useful, but because of
it's low starting range and damage, I usually opt for Bolt of Frost
instead. It also freezes opponents for a much shorter time than bolt
of frost.
6. Endurance
This can be a useful skill, if you really hate using scrolls to return
to the shop and breaking your killing rhythm, a few ranks of endurance
will vastly increase your carrying capacity. It's always on and doesn't
cost mana to use, and you don't have many skills like that. On the flip
side, it doesn't help you inflict damage on your enemies. This skill
depends on your playing style, and the weight of the equipment you want
to lug around, but it is better than spending stat points on strength.
7. Wizard Beam
This skill is a poor alternative to a melee weapon. It's only advantage
is auto-targeting which can be useful if you find it hard to aim at
enemies close up. However, the damage potential is terrible, the shards
from your Shock of Frost will normally deal more damage than your Wizard
Beam, at a much greater distance.
8. Bind Wound
Eventually, you'll probably want to take this skill, it'll allow to
recover from wounds quicker and allow you to be a little less cautious
on the longer maps, and require you to use fewer potions.
9. Lightning Weapons
This skill is useless in single players game and will actually hurt
you in multiplayer games. However, if you take it, your friends will
love you for it, and you may find that is worth the xp you will loose.
Although this is a team game, the game rewards those who strike the
killing blows. Otherwise, this is also the least useful out of all
the weapon skills, it adds a low damage bonus and no special effects.
10. Cold Weapons
This is a slightly better version of Lightning Weapons, all the same
concerns apply, except it will also slow down the opponents your friends
are engaged in melee with, making them love you more and probably
costing you even more exp.
11. Shock of Fire
This skill is an excellent heavy damage spell, it is consistently higher
than Bolt of Shock and at the top range it's mana cost is less than
50% higher than Bolt of Shock for almost twice the damage. The downside
is that it's splash damage only hits nearby creatures, the upside is
it hits all nearby creatures.
12. Fire Flares
This is an excellent skill in single player, and not too shabby in
multiplayer. The flares orbit you, and strike anything hostile that tries
to get too close. That's not too impressive, until you figure out that
you top out at 7 flares, each of which do half the damage of a Shock of
Fire bolt, for about 50% more mana, and the Fire Flares auto target. Best
of all, that damage is enough to often break an enemy's charge or even
kill him outright if he's already damaged. It's also extremely useful
against certain bosses, when you don't have to the time to aim at them.
13. Fire Storm
Again, this is not a skill I use, I prefer to use Shock of Frost and
Fire Flares to dish out my damage. However, it looks like the skill could
be quite effective at clearing out hordes of bad guys, however, I would
tend to opt for Cone of Fire for the even better damage.
14. Fire Weapons
This skill has the honour of being the most expensive skill available to
the Erudite Wizard, and is likely the most expensive skill in the game.
The aura, when you get it, is smaller than the first two skills and the
damage isn't much better, otherwise everything still goes, do yourself
a favour and don't get this skill.
15. Root
This ability will probably always be useless in multiplayer modes, your
friends will kill anything you root can root before the animation is
finished. In single player, you should be able to kill anything you could
quicker with your other skills.
16. Cone of Frost
This is the penultimate skill for the Wizard but when you get this ability,
it's small, hard to aim, and short range, three things you don't want in a
spell. It may be useful as a last resort defense spell, but you'd have to
put several points into it before you'd want to use it.
17. Cone of Fire
This skill does the most damage out of any Wizard skill, however, it
suffers from some of the same problems of Cone of Frost. I suspect that
the listed costs for Cone of Fire and Cone of Frost are not accurate. My
lvl 28 wizard could keep both spells operating indefinitely.
/**************************************************************************
* 5. Basic Builds [0005]
**************************************************************************/
This section describes different styles of wizard character and what
skills you may want to consider investing in to create that style of
wizard. You shouldn't feel bound by these templates, they may not be the
most effective builds for you.
Artillery Mage
--------------
As the name implies the blaster disdains melee he stands back and destroys
his enemies at range. The key trick to developing a good blaster is to
not over develop your abilities early. Every time you invest a point in
a skill it becomes more expensive to use that skill, that means you have
to take more breaks to recover mana or fire off you shots slower. So
with the exception of concentration spread your skill points around a
little to keep you options open and you to maximize your fire rate.
And if all else fails cone of frost and fire flares should make short work
of anything that gets too close to you.

Alternatively you could try:
Weather Mage
------------
Instead of maxing out the bolt spells, you will rely on them only to get you
through the first 7 levels. Then you switch to using ice storm and fire storm.
Everything else still applies, however, you won't be able to kill opponents
off screen.

Lastly, I really don't recommend this build:
Warrior Mage
------------
For this design to work, you're probably going to have to invest one third of
your ability points into strength and another third into stamina. You should
be able to deal ferocious amounts of damage in melee and you're weapons skills
will buff everyone else whose using weapons near you too. Note, that while
your weapon enchantments do stack, you'll need to have one slot free per
enchantment to be able to take advantage of them.

* 6. Equipment [0006]
**************************************************************************/
When it comes to equipment, the wizard does not shine. First of all you
can only use 1 weapon and no shield, so you are automatically one equipment
piece behind everyone else. Secondly, there are no amulets, earrings, or
chokers "of Godly Intellect", so your miscellaneous Int equipment will max
out at +29 instead of +38 for the other three stats.
The wizard has a unique collection of armour, which can be divided into
three classes with their own generic looks.
Cloth, Burlap, Wool, Silk
Linen, Velvet, Cryosilk, Warveil
Damask, Embersilk, Steelsilk, Gossamer
As far as equipment goes, most of the time you'll be looking for weapons
with Int and mana regeneration bonuses, because the base damage shouldn't
matter to you. That also means Sta, Dex and health regeneration bonuses
are mostly useless to you, you won't be taking damage often, and you can't
use ranged weapons so Dex doesn't help there. You don't want to be in
melee so strength is only really useful for carrying stuff.
I've also listed some of the unique items you may be interested in, in the
Details sections.
/**************************************************************************
* 7. Boss Strategies (Spoilers) [0007]
**************************************************************************/
Your boss strategy is usually pretty simple. Dodge and shoot. Use Shock
of Frost to slow the boss down and then run away and use Shock of Frost
again. It's going to be pretty much the same as you normally do.
Exceptions:
Orc Leader in Chapter I
-----------------------
You will be locked in a small room with the orc leader, you can't run very
far and there are stairs that will prevent you from hitting the leader if
you are on different sides of the stairs. This is probably the most
difficult fight, it's early in the game, you don't have many options. Run
as far away as possible without leaving the central area of the room, the
leader will charge you, if he hits you, you're probably going to die.
However, once the charge is over you can reposition and shoot him. You'll
usually only get 2-3 shots of before he charges you again. It's slow and
tedious but you'll eventually win.
Shelox in Chapter I
-------------------
Choose a direction and run until Shelox misses you with her web, then shoot
her a few times and keep circling, always travel in the same direction, and
you should be okay. If you get hit by the web run away or diagonally away
from Shelox and you should be fine.
Ant Queen in Chapter II
-----------------------
Stay near the entrance, block when the queen gets close, she'll poison you
for very little damage then fly away soon. If you try to dodge her, you'll
end up having to fight all of her servant ants at the same time, and it
becomes much more difficult.
/**************************************************************************
* 8. Your Role Online (or in a group) [0008]
**************************************************************************/
In a multiplayer game, your job is to stand behind the other characters
and make their hacking and slashing easier. The downside to this role is
that often you will be rewarded with fewer xp because you didn't get the
killing blow on the bad guys. On the upside if you're careful, you'll get
the extra xp when the hack'n'slashers bite of more than they can chew, and
you'll be the one who runs back to the save point to resurrect them.
Now, as far as tactics go, you can good mileage from a move we like to call
"Who wants to meet the Pope?". You need a blocker and preferably a narrow
area where you can force monsters to come at the you a few at a time. The
blocker will simply block attacks while you fire a stream of attacks over
the blocker killing anything that gets into melee with him. When executed
properly you end up with a compact area of dead monsters and neither you
hurt.

Thanks to SnowBlind for making Champions of Norrath, and here's hoping
there are many more sequels and similarly great games to come from them.
Thanks to Plaztik, for providing me with a basic layout in his excellent
Shadow Knight FAQ.
Thanks to The Crimson Phantom (AKA Jason L'Heureux), for the very useful
character guide FAQ. I used his calculations on mana costs to analyze some
of the decisions on which spells to use and why.
Thanks to watman for his unique item FAQ.
Thanks to frogjimmy of
http://www.frogjimmy.com/ for naming the "Who wants
to meet the Pope" maneuver. Hint: It works best when you yell "Who wants
to meet the Pope? Line up single file and you'll each get a turn!"
Thanks to Vini 1/2 aka Vini the Knife for encouraging me to write this
FAQ.
Lastly my thanks go out to gamefaqs for providing a place to host all of
these FAQs.
