My name is Thiago Linke and this is my first guide. I'm only writing it because
of the lack of guides for this great game.
I live in Belo Horizonte, Brazil, and as the vast majority of brazilians, I'm a
huge soccer fan. This game is a fine addition to the genre, and while not as
graphically spectacular as other similar games, its gameplay and similarity to
the real game dynamics put in on the top-three best soccer games list.

||b) Features||
This new addition to the Winning Eleven series features some new content, but
nothing really innovative. The main difference between this title and the last
one, WINNING ELEVEN 2000, is that all the sub-23 olympic national teams were
removed. The North Ireland, Jamaica and U.E.A national teams were also removed,
but the Senegal, Costa Rica and Ecuador national teams were added.
Some of the brand new features include the following:
Introduction Video. A cool one. Watch it. It's cool.
Cool new ball, the one used in the world cup.
Updated rosters
No trophy gallery. Who cares.
Better dynamics and in-game physics.

Again, the all-star teams are featured. The difference is that the Classical
All-Star Europe and the Classical All-Star World teams were removed, leaving
place for the addition of the All-Star Classical England, France, Holland,
Italy, Germany, Brazil and Argentina teams.
To unlock these teams, you basically have to beat the game in various modes:
-To unlock the Europe All-Star team, beat the World Cup with any national
team.
- To unlock the World All-Star team, beat the International League with any
national team.
-To unlock the England, France, Holland, Italy and Germany Classical All-Star
teams, beat the European Cup with their respective national teams.
-To unlock the Brazil and Argentina All-Star Classical teams, beat the American
Cup with their respective national teams.
-To unlock all the Master League teams in the exhibition game mode, beat the
Master League with any team.
-To be able to play an exhibition game with your custom made team against a
national team, beat the Master League with any team.
Remember to let the game save the status to the Memory Card (2 blocks) after
each one of these achievements.

||a) Basic Controls||
These button configuration is the default one, which can be changed. I wouldn't
advice it, though, since the default is very intuitive and easy to memorize.
In both defense and offense modes, the D-Pad and the analogic stick are used to
move your selected player, and the R1 button is used to run.
--Defense--
Square - . Forces a non-selected player of your team to chase the
adversary player who has the ball. Very handy when double
teaming.
Circle - . Ground Tackle. Be careful with this, as a miscalculated
tackle can result in a foul.
. Clear the ball. Use this while the ball is in the air
to make a clearing header or kick.
X - . Keep pressed to make the selected player of your team
chase the player who has the ball.
. Steal. Press it once while near the ball to attempt to
steal it from the adversary.
. Passing header. Press it once while the ball is in the
air to make a passing header.
Triangle - . Move your goalkeeper away from the goal. Dangerous.
The keeper will move away from the goal and towards the
ball while pressed. Use it only in emergency situations.
L1 - . Change player
--Offense--
Square - . Shoot. A power bar will appear below your player's name
when your press it. Release it when the bar reaches the
desired intensity.
. Header. Press it once while the ball is in the air to
perform an attack header, in the direction of the goal.
Circle - . High pass. The same power bar will appear under your
player's name. Release the button when the bar reaches
the desired position to perform a high pass.
. Cross. Press it when in the right or left wings to
perform a centering move. Press it once to do a high
center, two times to perform a mid-height one and three
times to perform a ground center.
X - . Pass. Press it once to pass the ball to a teammate.
. Passing heades. Press it once while the ball is in the
air to perform a passing header.
Triangle - . Deep pass. Very deadly move when used right. Press it
once to perform a deep pass, which will cause to the ball
to be passed ahead of your teammate, who will hopefully
be fast enought to receive it before the defense. Master
this once, it's a fine skill to have.

||b) Special Moves||
These are done while the player has the ball in his possesion.
L1 + Triangle - . High deep pass. It is basically the same as an regular
deep pass, except that the ball is passed high.
L1 + Square - . Lobby. It works as a shoot, but the ball will be kicked
high. Perfect for when the opponent's keeper is heading
your way. Mind the power bar.
L1 + X - . 1-2 pass. Very useful move, this will cause your player
to pass the ball to another one, who will pass it back
right after receiving it. When done right, completely
confuses the opponent's defense.
L1 + Circle - . High 1-2 pass. The same as above, except that the ball
is passed back high.
L1 - . Press it two times quickly to do a dribbling motion.
Square + X - . Press it to do a quick dribble. With power bar.
There's also a special move that is very useful, yet very difficult to master.
When you pass the ball, press R1 before the ball reaches the player. This will
cause the player to let the ball pass by him, making the defense confused and
giving another player a chance to get it.

Square - . Shoot. Mind the power bar.
Circle - . High pass. With power bar.

Good to used when very close to the goal (< 20 m.)
Up + Square - . Shooy the ball with less precision, but very powerfully.

Up + Cricle - . High pass with more precision.
When kicking, press left or right while the bar is filling to give the ball
curve. Be sure to have a player with a high curve score when doing this.

You can set 4 strategies, using the four main buttons. Set the button you want
to the strategy you want and during the game press L2 + the button you set to
activate that strategy.
They are listed in the strategy menu in that order:

Set full attack power to the center lane of the field.

I think you have figured it out by now.
. Opposite Side Attack
Your team will attempt to change it's attacking side during the match.
. Change Sides
Make the players that play in the left lane to go to the right one, and the
ones that play on the right lane to go to the left one.
. Center Back Overlap
Makes one of your defensive players to go up to the attack. Be careful
to not loose the ball, since your defense will be unguarded.
. Zone Press
Makes a pressured defense. Your players will be closer to the opponent's.
Very useful, just watch out for long passes.
. Counter Attack
Be defensive, and explore counter-attacks.
. Offside Trap
The defenders make a line trying to trap the attcker at an offside position.
It doesn't work as well as in the real game, so use at your own responsability.
. Change Formation
Will change your team's formation to a preset one.
NOTE: I personally advice setting the Zone Press, Center Back Overlap, Counter
Attack and one of the Attack ones.

||a) Game Modes||
--Exhibition--
Play a single match between two teams. Up to four players can be supported.
--International League--
It's a very long league, since you have to play with the other 15 teams twice
to complete the league. There's no playoffs, meaning that the team who makes
more points wins the league.
--Cup--
All the avaiable cups are basically the same. The only things that change are
the teams you have to play against. The World Cup features all national teams,
The European Cup only European teams, and so on. The only slightly different
one is the Konami Cup, because you can choose the amount of teams in in. It is
perfect for when you have your friends over.
--Master League--
Similar to the International League, except that instead of national teams, you
can choose amongst various soccer clubs from around the world. All the famous
ones are here. The nice thing is, you receive points that allow you to buy any
player from any team in the game.
You start in the Second Division, where points are distributed as follows:
A victory is worth 4 points. Depending on the number of goals you've scored,
you achieve extra points. I normal difficulty, the equation is:
(Number of Goals Scored - Number of Goals Suffered) + 1
In Hard difficulty, the equation is similar, except that you add 2 instead of 1
to the goal difference. A tie is worth 2 points, and a defeat, zero.
When you finish the 2nd Division, the two teams with the best record go up to
the 1st Division, and the two teams in the 1st Division with the worst record
go down to the 2nd Division.
The First Division features better teams and harder games, but the amount of
points you can make per game increases. By the time you reach here, your team
should have some good players in in, so it is not so hard.
This tima, a victory is worth 8 points, and a tie is worth 4. The equations for
the extra points are identical to the Second Division ones.
--Training--
Inside Training Mode, you can choose various fundaments to practice. They go
since Free Practice, where you simply do whatever you want, to Corner Practice,
Free Kick Practice, etc. You'll be able to figure out the in-game menu easily.

||b) Player Information||
When in the Strategy Menu, press R1 to see the player status. You will see a
lot of colored arrows. They indicate the mood of the player.
. Red Arrow
Your player is in a great mood. His stats will be boosted
. Orange Arrow
Good mood. Slight boost in stats.
. No Arrow (Green Line)
Ok mood. No changes in stats.
. Blue Arrow
Bad mood. Slight stat penalties.
. White Arrow
Terrible mood. Stat Penalties.
. Yellow Cross
The player is injured. He can play, but will suffer great penalties in stats.
. Red Cross
Serious injury. The player can't play until healed.
If you continue to press the R1 button, you can see the player's card history,
stamina bar, and positions.
Each player has his skills divided in several branches. They are in english in
the game, but when you are selecting which player to buy in the Master League,
they are in japanese and in a different order than they are in the Player Skill
Chart. Go figure.
Each score in these branches can go since 12 (worst) to 19 (best).
In the Player Skill Chart you can also see the player's age, height and kicking
foot.

characters. It's a long work, but I recommend it, since is cooler that way. The

to bottom right, and the players are in the order they appear from the keeper of
the main team until the last reserve.

Not really much to be said here. This is a very similar to reality game, so my
recommendations are to play as you would in real life. If you can't play very
well in real life, play the game as your favorite team would. If you don't know
anything at all about soccer, I'll state the basics.
First of all, be fast and smart. Try to think ahead of your opponent. While
in attack,pass the ball more often than run with it. If you have a fast team
with tall center forwards, go deep in the wing and cross the ball. 1-2 are great
moves, and can get you open with good looks often.
When you get a good look, shoot the ball. Try shooting it diagonally, as the
keeper tends to drop a rebound. Mind your player shooting leg, though, since if
a left-legged player shoot from the left side, the chances he will miss are
greater.
When defending, be tough. Don't let them pass by easily, make fouls when you
think it's necessary. Be careful not to be too harsh, as you can earn a red
card. Try to antecipate your opponent's moves before they actually do it.
Don't think twice to get your keeper out if it seems right.
I can't really say anything else, since it all depends on your playing style.
Play a lot, get your feel, soon you'll be able to do an entire Master League
in HARD difficulty without suffering a single goal (I did).
