Version 1
by Mark Rosa (markrosa [at] hotmail.com)
February 2002
These are the quotes displayed when you view the help screen (i. e.,
press select) with the cursor over the character's name.
These quotes weren't included in the North American version of FFT,
probably because they were in a rush to get the game released. (Also,
some of them refer to the sound novels which were taken out of the US
version; keeping them in would probably have driven players nuts
searching for non-existent things.)
But they're entertaining and fun, so I've put together a list of them,
vaguely sorted into categories. Please let me know if anyone isn't
listed, keeping in mind that when the US version was produced, several
names were mistranslated, and a few others were changed outright. I
haven't played the English version, so some of the ability names here are
going to be wrong. Fill me in, if you can.
Many of the quotes have heart symbols in them; since ASCII doesn't
contain such a symbol, I've reproduced it using a smiley, like this: ^^;.

(My explanations follow in parentheses.)
Bruce: I'm not good at writing kanji.
Dawson: Is it 'ikkodzutsu', or 'ikkozutsu'? (Japanese hiragana spelling
question. I favor the latter. --ed.)
Dennis: [Desu wa kowai desu.] (This is a pun; "desu" means "is" in
Japanese, and is also the spell "death" in kana. The sentence means
"Death is scary.")
JoBeth: ["naito" wa "knight"; "yoru" wa "night" yo.] (She's explaining
the difference between the English words "knight" and "night".)
Kay: It's hard to decide whether to write my name in hiragana or
katakana. (The English name "Kay" sounds the same as the Japanese name
"Kei". --ed.)
Mayfield: [Apple tte nani go? Ringo.] (This means "which language is the
word 'apple'; 'go' means language, and the Japanese word for apple is
'ringo', which contains the word 'go'.)
Morris: [Makete ureshii mono nani? Item no nedan.] ('What's something
you're happy to 'lose'? The price of an item!' -- in Japanese, 'makeru'
means both 'lose' and 'discount', so when you read the first sentence,
you'd think it meant 'lose', and then when you read the punchline, you
realize that he actually means 'what's something you're happy to get a
discount on?')
Morrison: [Ki-iro no ki tte dou natteru no? Yoko ni natteru.] (Write
this in kanji and it'll make sense. --ed.)
Schoenberg: I'm reflecting on half my life. ('Reflect' and 'half one's
life' are homonyms in Japanese.)
Spike: [Jamahou tte nan jaro?] (The sentence means 'What's jamahou?', but
'jaro' is Hiroshima / southwestern Japanese dialect for 'daro'.
'Jamahou' is the 'ja', or 4th level of magic -- Cure 4, Fire 4, etc. --
not usually seen in these games. The humor -- ? -- comes from him using
'ja' twice in the same sentence.)
Yugo: The word for "lowering a feverish temperature" is 'genetsu'. (The
kanji for 'genetsu' are 'kai' and 'netsu', not 'shita' and 'netsu'. This
is a commonly misspelled word.)
