                              2. Introduction

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
=============================================================================

Welcome to my strategy guide for The Vanishing of Ethan Carter! In this
guide, you'll find a complete, beginning-to-end walkthrough that does not
spoil the game! So big cheer for that! The walkthrough is separated by
event, and I've named the events as descriptively (and cleverly) as
possible.

I hope you enjoy your stay at Red Creek Valley a little more with this
guide. :)

=---=---=---=---=----=
=-- About the Game --=
=---=---=---=---=----=

The Vanishing of Ethan Carter (TVoEC for short; very apt acronym) is a
"Miscellaneous - General" game for the PC. But what it really is, is a scary
detective game. You go to this place called Red Creek Valley, and you gotta
find out what happened here. People are dead! The scene is spooky. So it's a
mystery game of sorts.

The gameplay is much more unique than your typical mystery game, though. As
the first words of the story indicate, this game does not hold your hand.
Like at all. So you'll have to use your mind to complete the game. No
tutorial sections, no hints by the protagonist, not even a shiny quest
marker, will help you out. And you can miss stuff if you aren't careful
enough!

It's a really good game, and I wholeheartedly recommend it.

=---=---=---=---=---=---=---=----=
=-- But why a guide for TVoEC? --=
=---=---=---=---=---=---=---=----=

There isn't one, and there should be a resource for this game for when things
get frustrating. It's definitely a game that you should try to complete on
your own, without any outside help, or it just won't be as fun. At the same
time, if you know WHAT to do, just not how to do it (looking at you, room
portals, mines maze, and chronologies), then this guide can make things less
frustrating.

Remember, this game does not hold your own! The game even says so! At the
same time, if you're super-stuck, this is a good place to see what's the
what. But do not follow this guide verbatim! That'll ruin the gaming
experience here.

=============================================================================

"Ethan Carter I didn't know. But he knew who I was. When the police won't
help you, and the priests don't believe you, you call on Paul Prospero. You
call on me.

"If you're a kid like Ethan, you write. Plenty do. Ethan's letters started out
just like any other fan mail, but soon there were mentions of things no
little boy should know about. There are places that exist that very few
people can see. Ethan could have drawn a map.

"I hadn't entered Red Creek Valley yet, but already I could feel its darkness
reaching out to me. Finding Ethan Carter wasn't going to be as easy as
knocking on his door. I was too late for that. To find Ethan, I had to figure
out what this place was trying to hide from me."

                            3.2 - Tips n' Tricks

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
=============================================================================

+ Don't use this guide unless you have to. Seriously! This game is only
super-fun if you try to do things on your own. It can be completed very
quickly if you know where to find everything. Only come here when you get
super-frustrated, or know what you have to do, just not how to do it.

+ Blue is good, red is bad. So when the screen flashes blue, you've done
something right. And when it's red, you've done something wrong. Clearly,
the developers did not play the red team in Halo.

+ Anything in the environment that gets labeled with text is important.

+ Read everything. And really read it, if you want to "get" the story.

+ You can mess up on chronology. The scenes will stop from where you first
messed up. Keep the scenes in order from the mess up; those ones before
  are in the correct order.

And here are some "hints" to help you complete the game without looking
through a detailed, albeit spoiler-free, walkthrough:

+ Did you look at all the traps? (Hint: there's five total.)

+ Did you go on a 'trip with the astronaut? (Hint: he's next to the
  boxcars, in the woods.)

+ Did you solve the train tracks murder, or just pass by it? (Hint: you can
get to a chronology puzzle here.)

+ Did you play with the portals in the house? (Hint: you can match them up.)

+ Did you find the witch's hut? (Hint: screen will turn dreamy when you're
  close to it.)

+ Did you solve the church and cemetery murder? (Hint: you must get to a
  chronology puzzle to complete it.)

+ Did you solve the Mines murder? (Hint: you can get to a chronology
  puzzle here.)

+ Did you solve the Dam House Murder? (Hint: you must get to a chronology
  puzzle to complete it.)

+ Did you go back and explore the mines some more? (Hint: be prepared for
jump scares and weird made-up letters!)

+ Did you go down to a basement? (Hint: Corvus, baby, corvus.)

                               4. Walkthrough

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
=============================================================================

This section contains a complete beginning-to-end walkthrough for The
Vanishing of Ethan Carter. The walkthrough is separated by major event, that
I've tried to descriptively name, so look for which place you're near in the
game, and match it up to the subsection in this guide.

NOTE: You can very well "skip" some events by accident on your first
playthrough. The game really don't hold yo' hand, as I've repeatedly said.
But missing stuff is perfectly fine, though. You'll just have to go back and
do it later if you miss it. It's no big, and sort of by design that you'd
need to come back.

ALSO: You can do these out of order, meaning you can go to the houses, then
come back and do the train tracks, then go and do everything else and
forget that you didn't do the Astronaut and then go do that. I've simply
listed them by what's closest, and what I feel is the most logical order.
But a key point in this game is you fumbling around, trying to figure out
what's up here. So you should literally be up the creek without a paddle
if you want the best "gaming experience.

FINALLY: This walkthrough is as spoiler-free as possible. I do not narrate
events, summarize letters, or even name the characters. I just call them
"boy," "old man," "woman," "man with beard," etc, so you won't get any of
those horrid spoilers. Ergo, I don't even say "Ethan" in the guide.

4.1 - The Five Traps Near those Train Tracks

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
=============================================================================

Checklist:
- Find the five traps

At the beginning of the game, we find ourselves on some train tracks, just
out of the tunnel, in some spooky woods. Many people run right past this
small area, but there is actually something to do here. See, you have to
find five traps in these woods. Two are on the left of the train tracks, and
three are on the right. After each trap, you'll get a little more of the
Vision (hold spacebar to see it). When you get all five, something happens,
and you get to read a letter. (Sorry, being purposely vague to not spoil
anything!)

So, the traps. Remember to hold down the "Sense" button after each trap. This
will reveal a little more of the vision, after each trap.

Here's the five traps:

Trap #1: To the left of the train tracks, wander around in the open land next
to the purple flowers. A ground trap springs with spikey wood logs.

Trap #2: From the ground trap, continue on the left side of the tracks, a
little further, and you'll find a bear trap. It is between three
trees and near some rocks on the ground.

Trap #3: Head back to the tunnel (where you started). It's time for the traps
on the right. If you look to the right, you should see a little dirt
path, leading up to two trees. In between these trees, you'll find a
swinging trap that swings past you when you get close.

Trap #4: Fourth trap is pretty easy to spot. Go down the tracks a little bit
and you'll see a makeshift trap made of wood. It looks like the top
of a wood crate with spikes on it. Get close and it will spring up.

Trap #5: For the last trap, head down the train tracks until you get to some
piles of rocks that are on top of them. From here, go right, past
the rock to the side, and you'll find an open meadow, a path of
sorts. This leads in the direction back to the train tunnel. Head
all the way back in this different area. At the end, between three
trees, you'll find another spikey-crate-top trap, similar to
        trap #3.

When you've "Sensed" all five traps, the screen will turn grey and you'll be
back near where trap #5 was located. Read the note, "SAP," on the ground near
the tree.

With all traps "Sensed," and the letter "SAP" read, we're completed the trap
portion of the game. Head back to the train tracks and follow them, over a
wood bridge, and to a train car with blood on it.

=============================================================================
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

4.2 - The Train Tracks Murder

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
=============================================================================

Checklist
---------
Inspect: - Blood at train                   | Items: - Crank on beach
        - Rope on train tracks             |        - Rock near tree stump
        - Severed legs on train tracks     |
        - Corpse near train tracks         | Chronology?: - Yes, 1-6
        - Rock pile at end of train tracks |
        - Gas canister near train tracks   |
        - Dried grass near train tracks    |

When you follow the train tracks over the wood bridge, you'll find a train
car with blood on it. "Inspect" the blood at the front of the train car. A
lot of text pops up -- potential reasoning and questions for the blood --
then the word "Crank" pops up, scattered in several places on the screen.
Your job here is to align all the "Crank" words on the screen, so they make
just one word.

To do this, look right, basically at the big rock, with the lake in the
background. The words will move closer together, signifying that you're in
the right direction. A little more manipulating, and you will have all the
words aligned. Hold down the Sense button to open a vision which will show
you where the Crank is located. It should also be noted that the direction
you are pointing is also where the Crank is located, relative to your current
location.

You can "Enter" the train if you want. But it won't work without the Crank.
So when you press the "On/Off Button," nothing happens, and when you
pull/push the Forward/Backward lever, nothing happens either. So we have to
find that Crank to get the train working.

But before that, we should do some more investigating. Head down the train
tracks, quite a ways, and you'll find some blue rope on the ground, next to a
piece of cement that it was tied to. Inspect this rope and the word "Rope"
will go up over the Rope. There's nothing else to do here; no vision or
anything, so let's go down the train tracks a little further.

And a little further we find our first gruesome sight -- tons of blood and
two Severed Legs. "Inspect" the legs -- basically the blood on the train
tracks -- and the words "Severed Legs" will appear above them. Now follow the
trail of blood, off the train tracks, and over to the body.

We found his legs on the train tracks, and the rest of his body over here.
You can try to "Touch," but it won't reveal a vision because we haven't
completed this murder scene yet. But keep in mind where the corpse is at,
because that's where we'll start the scene.

So what now? Well, we have that Crank down by the water we need to find. So
head down to the lake -- the rocky path near the corpse will lead you there.
And if you remember the vision before, it's right near the water, perched up
on a rock. It's brownish, rusted, and L-Shaped. Look around the beach area
with the rocks, right near the water, and you'll find it.

Now head all the way back to that train car we couldn't get starting, way
back at the bridge. Use "Fix" at the front of the train to insert the crank.
Afterward, press the Left Mouse Button to rotate the Crank, quickly, several
times around. Basically, spam the Left Mouse Button, and the repeatedly
rotations of the Crank will turn on the train.

Now hop in the train. You don't need to press the On/Off button just yet, as
the train is already on. From here, you'll want to put the train in reverse
-- go BACK -- and you'll ride down, past the crime scene, to some rocks that
will stop your nice ride. Hop out of the train now -- this is where we'll put
it for now.

We're almost done. Go around the train car to the left side (the side with
the rock wall, and you will see a pile of rocks, along with a red and white
safety object, all in a pile on the ground. Inspect the center of this pile
and you'll need to align the words "Rock." It's off to the left of the rock
pile, so just look left and align the words up.

Now we have to find the rock and return it to the pile. As you will see in
the vision, it's near a tree stump. And as the word alignment indicates, it's
back toward the murder scene. So head back up the train tracks until you see
a tree stump on the left. It's very close to the train tracks themselves.
Very near the stump, "Inspect" and take the rock. Head back to the rock pile
and place it in it's rightful place.

One last thing: you might have seen a red oil canister very near the train
tracks. Inspect it, then inspect the dried grass on the train tracks near the
oil canister. You'll be allowed to "find" the train, but we already know
where it is -- just down the railroad, by the pile of rocks. So, we need to
move the train up to this spot, so it goes over the dried grass. You can use
the power line post to the right of the train trains as an indicator of where
you need to stop. Turn off the power to the train, head over to the corpse,
and hold down the "Touch" button.

The screen will turn blue, and five light-blue light particles -- let's just
call them the Shimmering Lights of Hope -- will fly up and over to various
parts of the murder scene. Head to each of the places where the Shimmering
Lights of Hope go. If you "lose" any, just look for the sparkly white and
blue shimmers coming up from the ground. And yes, let's just call those the
Pretty Sparkly Lights.

When you go to each Pretty Sparkly Light, people -- ghosts, don't get freaked
-- will materialize. And when you've gone to all six, you'll see the word
"Chronology" pop up over each of them. So, for this task, we need to put each
event in the correct order, from one as the first to six as the last.

I definitely recommend playing around a bit first before resorting to the
answer key, but here it is:

Scene #1: At the very beginning of the train tracks, you'll see a man looking
at a boy tied to the train tracks. This is where you found the
         "Rope" before. It's Scene #1.

Scene #2: Head down the train tracks to the very end, where you placed the
rock before. You'll see an old man picking up said rock. This is
         Scene #2.

Scene #3: At the train itself, the old man is talking to the guy who tied the
kid to the train tracks. The train scene is Scene #3.

Scene #4: The man on the train tracks with blood around him. It's between the
rope scene and the train scene. The man-blood-train-tracks is
         scene #4.

Scene #5: Following the blood, you'll see a scene with the man, now without
legs, with the boy hovering over him in horror, and the old man,
with the Crank in his hand, looking menacing at the half-man. This
scene right off the tracks is Scene #5.

Scene #6: Last scene is further off the path, a little ways past Scene #5.
Scene #6 is of the man looking down at the now-dead man. No boy is
         in this scene.

Got them matched up? Good! Press the "Visualize" button to watch the whole
murder play out. If you matched up the scenes correctly (and you should have
if you followed the directions above), then it will play all the way through.
After that, we have the bonus Pretty Sparkly Light, which is down the path by
the beach. This is a scene with the boy and the old man. And with that, we've
finished The Train Tracks Murder.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

4.3 - The Astronaut (Come Fly with Me!)

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
=============================================================================

Checklist:
- Find the four-light post.
- Crack the code.
- Follow the Astronaut; he will dematerialize several times.
- Fly with the Astronaut in his spaceship.
- Read the letter.

This is a VERY easy one to miss. Basically, you find this four-light puzzle,
then follow an Astronaut to his spaceship, then go off in space.

I'm serious.

But the reason why this is so easy to miss is because the start of it -- the
four-light object -- is off in the woods to the left of the boxcars. It's
kinda difficult to find without directions, and even harder to put into
words, but here goes nothing!

It's off to the LEFT of the train tracks. That is to the left of the train
tracks murder scene, or to the left of the boxcars further down the train
tracks. It's easiest to find the four-light object from the boxcars. So, at
the boxcars, head left, into the forest. Go straight -- completely straight
-- and you'll hit some darker grass. If you look around the darker grass, you
will find the four-light astronaut object. It is iron-colored from the back,
and it has four white lights from the front.

So, that's left of the boxcars, straight out into the forest. If you're
having trouble, it's easier to find the four-light post from the far side, so
go deeper into the forest and look back toward the train tracks.

At the four-light post, you'll be able to touch each screen to make a code.
When you touch the right screen, that screen will turn blue. And if you touch
the wrong one, the whole post will turn red and you'll have to start over.
From what I've gathered from looking at various sources (YouTube videos
mainly), the "code" for the screen appears to be randomized, so you'll just
have to keep inputting, by trial and error, to find the correct combo. But
it's only four screens, so it should not be tough at all. Just keep pressing
the blue screens until you get it.

When you crack the combo, a vision opens up and you see an Astronaut, plain
in front of you. Your job now, if you aren't freaked out enough already, is
to chase the Astronaut. When you get close, he'll turn around and start to
run, then dematerialize. You have to keep chasing him until you get to the
spaceship. Note that when he starts to run off, he is running in the
direction of where he will next be after he materializes again.

So follow the Astronaut to the spaceship. Run up and you'll enter the
spaceship. Enjoy the blast off into space, and then a letter will pop up from
the seat behind you in the spaceship. Read the letter, "Fangs," and press the
"Accept" button to get warped back to Red Creek Valley.

See? That was fun! Some type of bizarre hallucination trip. But entirely
missable, for the game does not hold your hand. :(

=============================================================================
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

                 4.4 - The Two Houses: Rooms-Portals Edition

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
=============================================================================

Checklist:
- Enter the bigger of the two houses.
- Go through all the rooms, listening to the conversations.
- Remember the house layout; where each room is at and what's in them.
- Now enter the house closer to the bridge and read the letter on the table.
- Head through the door portal.
- Match up all the rooms to the floorplan in the first house.
- Enter the freaky secret room and read the letter there.

Depending on how you play and what you might have missed, this could be the
first puzzle you try to do in the game. And if that's the case, be sure to
visit the previous sections and do those puzzles after you've done this one.
They're fun and crazy, especially the Astronaut one.

But, basically, you will come across two houses after a lot of walking.
You'll need to follow the train tracks all the way to a cobblestone bridge,
off to the right. It's a long walk on the train tracks, and Mr. Prospero, our
protagonist, will do a little talking along the way.

Cross the bridge and you'll be at two houses. Both look like they've seen
better days, and both are on more elevated land right off the road. The house
on the LEFT -- the one nearest the bridge -- we will go to second, because
that one is where the puzzle lies. So, that leaves the right house -- the
house farther away from the bridge -- as the first one we'll enter.

In this bigger house, go through all the rooms, stopping to hear the
conversations. This definitely adds to the plot elements of the story, but
the overarching idea is this: there's a secret room in the other house, and
that's what you need to find.

BUT! While in the first house, you'll want to try to remember the layout of
the house. Which room is where; what's in each room. Anything that will help
you identify the floorplan of the house. This is because we're going to need
to recreate the floorplan -- each room -- in the other house. Of course, I'll
walk you through what each room will be, but if you want to try to discover
it for yourself, the key is to remember all the rooms in the bigger house.

Also, you can find a picture on the dresser opposite the first floor door to
the house. This picture has the entire family, with some haunting text on the
back.

So, it's now time for the Rooms-Portals puzzle! Head over to the other house
and read the note on the small table where you walk in. When you put it down,
the screen will flash blue, and the door in front of you will have a portal-
type glow to it. Head through it.

Here it is. The Rooms-Portals puzzle. You must match up each room to the
rooms in the other house. To do this, walk up to the door, and press the Left
Mouse Button to "swap" what's inside. When you've swapped to the correct
room, walk through it, and the screen will flash blue. If you get it wrong,
the screen flashes red, and you will have to redo the whole puzzle if you
keep messing up.

So what are the answers to this puzzle? I'm going to list them by floor and
room.

FIRST FLOOR
-----------
Room to the Left of the Stairs:
- It has a kitchen table, a rug, and a window to the left. The kitchen table
is the defining feature.

Room to the Right of the Stairs:
- The room with the small set of stairs that leads up to another room with a
window. It is the only potential answer that has stairs in it.

In the Right Room, the door to the left:
- The correct room has a spider web in the top left.

In the Right Room, the door up the small set of stairs:
- The correct room has a small table with a boarded-up window above it. The
only other choices are rooms that you have already chosen.

With the first floor complete, head up to the second floor now.

SECOND FLOOR
------------
Room to the Left of Stairs (Very Near Stairs):
- The correct answer is the room with the desk, chair, and three windows.

In the Room to the Left of Stairs:
- The correct room has two windows and a small table.

In the Follow Room, Left of Stairs:
- The correct room has white chalk on the wall, has more reddish walls, and
there is a plank near the ceiling that is crooked.

Room to the Right of Stairs (Next Room in this Sequence):
- The correct answer is not a room at all, but actually a hall. Can't miss
that!

Halfway Down Hall, To the Left:
- The correct room is the only available choice that has windows. Both
windows are partially boarded-up, and there is a painting above a dresser in
the room.

Down Hall, Last Room:
- This room has a cobweb in the top-left and three windows, all partially
boarded up. There are also some chairs in the room, as well as a red recliner
sideways on the ground.

Head up the stairs now to the final floor, which is more of an attic than
anything.

THIRD FLOOR
-----------
Only Room on Third Floor:
- The correct answer is the one that actually looks like an attic. It is a
big room, with a desk at the far end and two windows.

When you've swapped to all the correct rooms, you will see the "secret room"
if you try to go back through a door. This room has alchemist materials,
books, papers on the ground, and -- oh yeah -- a severed head and a dead
fetus.

Read the letter on the desk about the magician, and you'll be warped back to
the real house. It is a room with a bunch of barrels. There are two items to
read in this room: a newspaper clipping on a barrel, and a letter on the
dresser. Exit the room (open the door), go down the stairs, and leave this
spookier house.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

4.5 - The Witch Hut (Not Hunt!)

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
=============================================================================

Checklist:
- Go out back, behind the big house, and look for the Witch Hut.

This is a much smaller scene, very similar to the Astronaut in that you can
miss it.

Head back to the two houses and go around the back of the bigger house. It's
the house farther from the bridge, and the house where Paul went all schizo
and heard voices. At the back of the house, you should see a small dirt path,
leading up the terrain out back.

Follow this dirt path, up the terrain a little ways, until you come to a rock
and a small little tree on the right. From here, you'll want to go off the
path to the right, venturing into this foresty-hilly-area. Soon, the screen
will turn blue, and you'll have the witch talking to you.

Just head forward as she asks you questions. After each question, the
environment "warps around," but just keep heading forward. You don't need to
answer the questions in the game, although you'll probably implicitly answer
them inside your head as you're walking.

After the final question, you'll end up at the Witch's Hut -- more like a
small tent with torches -- and there will be a letter on the ground. Read it,
and you'll be warped back to reality. There will now be two letters on the
ground -- the one you've already read, and a small white one. Read the small
white one, and we'll have completed everything to do with the Witch's Hut.

Head straight behind the Witch Hut now. You'll traverse over a hilly-reddish
type area, and come across a graveyard. Continue further, and you'll find the
church and the cemetery.

=============================================================================
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

4.6 - The Church and Cemetery Murder

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
=============================================================================

Checklist
---------
Inspect: - Blood in graveyard        | Items: - Lamp in Church tower
        - Sigil on wall             |        - Crow near grave
        - Crow in underground       |        - Crow dagger in corpse
        - Wheelbarrow               |
        - Tree stump with blood     | Chronology?: - Yes, 1-5
        - Oil lamp area             |

So, we have another murder scene for the great and prosperous Paul. There are
quite a few things we have to do to crack this one. First, we should inspect
everything (Blood x3, Wheelbarrow, Lamp), then get the items (Lamp, Crow,
Crow Dagger), and then solve the chronology.

First, inspect the blood in the graveyard, which is probably the first thing
you'll come across from the Witch's Hut. It will then be labeled "Blood
Stain," awfully apt, don't you think?

Now head over to the graveyard proper. It will be quite a scene: blood,
bricks, and a wheelbarrow. Inspect the blood on the wall; it certainly looks
like a crow, and it will be labeled as a "Sigil." Next to this, you'll find a
Wheelbarrow. Inspect it and -- guess what? -- it'll be labeled "Wheelbarrow."

Go underground now -- I know you've been itchin' to go down there. There are
some bricks at the entry, and when you get down, you'll see it's all dark
inside. If you look to the left, you'll see a lever and a statue of a crow.
You can try to pull the lever, but nothing will happen. And when you
"Inspect" the crow, you'll see that it's missing another crow statue, and
that these two things, according to Paul, will make a type of lever
mechanism.

Then, you'll have to do the word alignment puzzle. When you align it, it will
be pointing outside toward the graveyard, and as you will see in the vision,
it's next to a grave. Since we're pointed in the right direction, let's go
get that crow, shall we?

Head back up and go over to the graveyard. You will need to go far out, to
the furthest graves from the church, before you find the crow, just as in
your vision, near a grave. It can be a little tough to find because a tree
blocks it if you look from the Church, but if you're looking for it while you
are facing the church, you should have no trouble.

Take the crow and head back to the underground area. "Fix" it -- by that, the
game means reuniting the crows, putting them in place -- and then pull the
lever. This makes the two crows bash heads, which starts up a fire that
illuminates the entire room. And, as you can see, we have a dead body on top
of a coffin right in the center of the room. See, that's why I didn't want
you fumbling around in the dark...

Head over to the corpse. There will be two things to inspect: the crow
dagger, which has been stabbed into the body's torso, and the corpse itself.
Take the crow dagger and "Inspect" the body. We can't use "Touch" for now, so
leave the body like it is. Head back up to the cemetery.

Out here, to the right of the underground entry, you will see a tree stump
with a blood bucket next to it, with blood around it, with some dead crows
around that. "Inspect" the tree stump area, then place the dagger on the tree
stump through "Fix." Note: if you looked at this before getting the dagger,
you will have a "???" word alignment, which will point down to the corpse.
But, if you got the dagger first, this won't happen.

We're almost done with the murder scene. The last thing is the Oil Lamp,
which is across from the bloody tree stump. Inspect the rock with the green
oil can and the matches. It appears we need to find an Oil Lamp; align the
letters, which will point you toward the tower in the Church. Yep, it's time
to go inside the Church now.

The only entrance is on the graveyard side. In the church, there will be rows
of benches. There's nothing to do but go down the hallway to the right, to
the tower we saw before, and pick up the Oil Lamp on the ground. This tower
has stairs, but you can only go up a few of them because they have already
fallen apart.

With the Oil Lamp in hand, return to the rock with the green oil can and the
match, and select "Fix" to place the Oil Lamp on the rock. If you've gotten
all the stuff in place, you'll hear a scary noise, which means that you're
ready to "Touch" the corpse. Go back underground, over to the corpse, and
hold the "Touch" for Shimmering Lights of Hope to spawn, just like in the
train tracks murder.

As is the usual, the will go off to various parts of this murder scene. Head
to each of them, and your next job will be to figure out the chronology of
the events.

Scene #1: The woman and the bearded man looking at each other. They're on the
         path behind the Church.

Scene #2: All three people near the underground entrance. The bearded man is
a little ways back, and the other man looks like he's cowering in
         fear of the woman.

Scene #3: The woman overlooking the man, who is crouched to the ground. It's
         right next to Scene #2.

Scene #4: In the graveyard at the front of the Church. It's where the blood
stain was located. The scene is of one man strangling another,
while the woman has the crow dagger pointed at the strangler.

Scene #5: It's right next to #1, behind the church. It's a little ways off
the path and of the woman with the lamp and a younger man.

With all the scenes set up, visualize it and watch our play unfold. Just like
before, we get the final scene, and this is one of the man and the boy
talking underground. What's key here, as far as the walkthrough, is that the
boy mentions going into the mines. This is our next destination.

=============================================================================
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

                           4.7 - The Mines Murder

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
=============================================================================

Checklist
---------
Inspect: - The lift's lock     | Items: - Pickaxe
        - The pickaxe rack    |
        - Raise the lift      | Chronology?: - Yes, 1-5

First, we have to get to the mines. If you're at the Church, you can take the
path behind the cemetery. It's more of a reddish dirt road than a path, but
keep following it and the path will begin to slope downward. Head down, and
the mines will be near a small tower-like structure.

An easier way to get to the mines, though, is to go back to the two houses
with the portals. From those houses, continue along the road -- it will go a
ways, and at the fork, keep right. Soon, you will reach the mines.

Unfortunately, the mines' gate is locked. You can go up to it, hear the eerie
music, but you won't be able to get in. Instead, we'll have to get in the way
the boy did, which is by squeezing through a small rock opening on the right
side of the mines.

To get to the secret entrance to the mines, walk back from the mines entrance
a little. To your right, you will see a small, reddish dirt path. Go up it,
and veer off to the right, into a green foresty area. Here, you will see some
rocks with the "Enter" text above them.

Through the rocks, you'll find yourself in a cave-like area. Follow the
linear path, and it will dump out to the caged-entrance of the mines. From
here, follow the tunnel until you reach a lift. Get on the lift and press the
button to descend further into the mines.

Exit the lift, then follow the tunnel until you reach a large area with train
tracks. On the right side of the this area, you'll see another lift. To the
left of the lift, there are the controls for the lift. Press the button to
make the lift go up.

When it's up, you'll see it was submerged in water, and that a woman was
locked in the lift and drowned to death inside. Looks like we've got some
detective work to do! First, "Inspect" the lock on the lift. You can also try
"Touch" on the dead woman, but it won't work right now, for we have not
completed the murder scene yet.

To the right of the lift, inspect the pickaxe rack. Align the pickaxe
letters, but it appears that wherever the pickaxe is at is real dark. That's
what we need to find, though. But first, follow the train tracks, and when
they split, go right. You'll find the old train.

Hop inside and start it up. Put it in reverse, and go as back as you can.
Then punch it forward -- full light speed -- and you'll break the barrier of
rocks on the tracks. Keep the train moving forward -- it will go around to
the lift, and back into the tunnel -- and ride it until you see the pickaxe.
It will be on the left, stuck in a red box.

You have to stop the train a little ways before the pickaxe. If you drive up
too close, the "Inspect" text above the pickaxe will disappear, and you won't
be able to get it. But when you have the pickaxe, return to the pickaxe rack
and return it. That's all we need to do to start this scene, so "Touch" the
corpse and we'll start the chronology.

This one has five scenes.

Scene #1: This scene is of lady and the bearded man walking into this main
area. So it's near the tunnel that use took to get into the area
originally, and also near train tracks. Both he man and the woman
are looking off in the distance at the lift.

Scene #2: The man and the woman by the lift. The man is looking at her from
the outside, and the woman is inside the lift. It's strange that
this is scene #2, but alas, it is was it is.

Scene #3: The bearded man at the lift controls, to the left of the lift.

Scene #4: The bearded man, with an axe in hand, near the pickaxe rack, to the
         right of the lift.

Scene #5: The bearded man, with his pickaxe, to the far left of the lift.
He's looking back at the lift.

After visualizing the scene, follow the last Shimmering Light of Hope to the
final scene with the boy and the pickaxe man. And that's it for the mines
murder.

To get to the Dam House murder, ride the train all the way down the mine
until you can't no more. At that point, get off, and to your left you will
see a tunnel. This tunnel leads to cold boiling water (I'm serious). Trudge
through it and follow the tunnels to reach back outside. You'll have to
crouch under a wood plank to get fully outside. From here, you'll find the
Dam House Murder off to your right.

=============================================================================
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

4.8 - The Dam House Murder

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
=============================================================================

Checklist
---------
Inspect: - The body in the upstairs office | Items: - Pickaxe
        - The desk                        |        - Scissors
        - The debris on floor near door   |
        - The fire axe case               | Chronology?: - Yes, 1-5

The Dam House is the yellow three-story building right next to the dam
itself. It is not to be confused the Dam Controls Building, which is far
bigger but only one story. And again, you can absolutely come across this
before or after doing other things, so just jump here when you're here! :)

Head inside the dam house, go up the stairs, and you'll reach an office of
sorts, only this one has a dead body on the ground. Inspect the body, but
just as the other times, you can't "Touch" right now because we haven't
gotten the scene together.

On the desk next to the body, inspect the accessories on the table. It
appears that a lot of school supplies are here, but that something is
missing. You then have another Word alignment game -- it's "???" that you
have to align. When you're pointing out the window to the left, you'll be
close.

And when you've aligned it, "hold" and you'll see a pair of scissors on rope
container, on a lift. Go outside and head in the direction of the "???" and
you'll find the lift with the scissors, after a bit of walking through the
grass. Pick up the scissors, return to the Dam House, and place the scissors
back on the desk. That's one down.

Go back downstairs and "Inspect" the opened case on the wall, to the left
when you first walk inside. You'll need to align "Axe," which is a trickier
one but facing upwards, like it's upstairs. And, indeed, it is upstairs: head
back up and take the axe on the ground, near the corpse. After that, head
back down and put the axe in its rightful place.

Head upstairs again and inspect the debris near the door leading into the
murder room. And that's it for the murder scene. Head over to the body and
start the shimmering sparkly scenes of goodness.

There are five scenes, and the hardest part is following all the shimmers.
It's seriously the easiest of the puzzles, as you just go from farthest away
from the murder to nearest. Nonetheless, the scenes go in this order:

Scene #1: At the mines exit, man with axe is about to ambush the other man.
This is the hardest part of the scenes because you have to walk
back to the mines exit, which is just a little ways north of the
Dam House, and it can be hard to find if you're not looking for it.

Scene #2: The man has the axe slung behind his shoulder, and the man has
his hands in the air, probably uttering "chill out, dude!" or "pass
me the ball!" It's the second farthest scene from the house.

Scene #3: This scene is closest to the house without being inside. The man
with the axe is looking at the other man, who is on the ground
         clutching his face.

Scene #4: Upstairs, at the door. The man with the axe is looking at the other
man, who appears to be shutting the door, so as not to be murdered
         by axe man.

Scene #5: The final scene, the scene where the dead body came to be. It's
near the desk on the second floor. The man without the axe now has
         scissors. Thankfully, he's not running.

The final shimmer exits the house and goes off in this distance, towards the
other big house by the dam. This is none other than the Dam Controls House.
Go to it, watch the scene between the two big dam controls, and we've
finished the Dam House Murder.

While we're here, you'll need to turn off the dam controls so you can reach
the final house. To do this, go behind the machine that's working -- one is,
and one isn't. Behind it, you'll find a red circular lever. Repeatedly tap
the Left Mouse Button to turn off the dam, which lowers the water and allows
you to progress further. And of course, you'll be locked in this building,
since you didn't enter it un-spirit-like, so you'll have to turn the lock and
open the door to leave the building.

But first, we have to do that maze in the mines. Ouch!

=============================================================================
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

                           4.9 - The Mines Maze

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
=============================================================================

Now we need to return back to those dreaded mines, to the worst part of the
mines, and probably the worst part of the game. I held off on putting this
before the Dam House, because it's a really frustrating area, not pretty to
look at at all, and full of scares. But, at any rate, head back to the mines,
go through the cool boiling water, and hop back on the train. Go back down
the tunnel, toward the Mines Murder, and you'll see a lit tunnel off to the
right. Take it down to the Mines Maze.

Read the note by the gate. It's not a good sign. For this area, there is this
crazy miner walking around the maze. When he sees you, he will jump at you,
scaring you half to death, and make you start over the maze all over again.
It's actually scarier than it sounds.

So you have to avoid the miner when you're wandering around the maze. This
means that, when you see him, slowly go in the other direction. Don't let him
see you, and you should be A-Okay!

In the right portion of the maze, you will find a big room with an elevated
area in the middle. Go up to this elevated part, and you'll see a weird gate
puzzle. You have to find the correction combination of six signs to open this
gate and continue in the game.

To crack the code, you need to find five bodies scattered throughout the </pre><pre id="faqspan-2">
maze. At each one, inspect them and each will have those Shimmering Lights of
Hope. If you go back to the gate room, they'll be standing on the combination
up top.

The way you choose where to place the symbols is determined by the shape that
the body has under it. For example, the Circle Shape has the "Z", and you can
match up both on the gate.

So, you could, ostensibly, wander around the maze, find the five guys, and
crack the code that way. It's a lot of wandering, much the maps throughout
(probably placed after beta testing) make it easier. Still, I would like to
list the correct combination here, for those of you who would just like to
get this area over with. Here it is, from top to bottom:

Top: Symbol of what looks like a horn
  ____
  \  /
   \ |_/\
    \___/

Second from Top: Looks like a three little shapes close together.
   _
  |_\__
  __|_/
  \/

Third from Top: Looks like a bunched three-leaf clover with horns on top of
               it.
  \   /
  ¯¯|¯¯
  /¯ ¯/
   ¯'¯

The three bottom ones are a lot easier:

Bottom: sideways "8" (sorry, not math inclined!)
Second from Bottom: A "Z"
Third from Bottom: A "Z" (again)

When you have the correct combination, water rushes in and you see some
tentacles. After that, read the note, "The Curse of the Sea-Thing," on the
rock next to you, and you'll be back in the mines. Read the three letters on
the ground here, then head out of the mines to the dam house.

=============================================================================
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

4.10 - The Burned Down House Murder

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
=============================================================================

This is it, Skippy! The last leg of the race, the final part of the game.
With the water lowered after moving the dam controls, you can cross the river
by the Dam House. You will see the path above the river, and because the
water has been lowered enough, you can walk over the lower part of the path.

On the other side of the river, go right. Follow the path until you reach a
small little river, a type of stream. Follow this stream, well, follow it
upstream, and cross the bridge. Continue following the path until you reach a
lake.

From the lake, circle around it to the left, cross another bridge, and go up
the slopey terrain. Soon, you'll reach the Burned Down House, which is the
final area of the game. Go inside the premise of the Burned Down House --
which is burned down, so it's not quite like you're going in -- and look
around the right part of the area.

You will find a puzzle on the ground. It's a circular door that leads to the
basement, but it has six orbs around it, all with different letters. Inspect
it, and the words "Corvus" will trickle all about the screen. I wonder what
the code for this six-letter puzzle is?

That's right -- you guessed it! It's Corvus!

The hard part is inputting it; where do you start? Well, if you look at the
ground, you'll see a steel rod going from the center orb to an orb on the
side. It is currently set at "G." And that's where you start, so turn it
until you get "C." Then go clockwise around the circle -- O, R, V, U, and S,
and the orb in the center will rotate. And then you'll be able to open the
door! Yay!

Go down into the basement, head across the hall, and you'll be in a room with
a ton of debris, and -- oh yeah -- a fried corpse peacefully sitting on the
ground. Inspect corpse, then use "Touch," and the screen will change to that
blue dreamy hue. Basically, this time we didn't need to fix anything or
inspect anything or move anything. We just needed to "Touch" the corpse.

There are only four chronologies for this puzzle. Here are the answers:

Scene #1: This scene has the old man holding two oil cans, with the boy
looking curiously at him. It's by the door you first entered, and
         farthest from the corpse.

Scene #2: This one's easy: it's just the boy rotating the table. It's in the
         center of the room.

Scene #3: The old man and the boy trying to pry open the secret door.

Scene #4: The old man hunched over on the ground, near the door.

After watching the scenes, head inside the secret room and "Wake Up" the
person lying on the ground. If you've completed everything before this, the
ending of the game will occur. But if you haven't, you'll be looking at a map
of the area, with red X's crossed out for everything you've currently done.
If you're short on puzzles, go back and do them -- look at the map and this
guide for help.

Remember, you have to do EVERYTHING, and you can't skip any of them, to see
the ending! This means ALL of the following:
- The Traps Near the Train Tracks, in the VERY beginning
- The Train Tracks Murder
- The Astronaut, off in bizarro land way out of the way
- The Portal Rooms in the Houses
- The Witch's Hut
- The Church and Cemetery Murder
- The Mines Murder
- The Mines Maze Puzzle, Scary as Heck
- The Dam House Murder
- The Burned Down House Murder

When you've completed them all, come back to this secret room, and enjoy the
ending to this mysterious, haunting, thrilling story!

Congratulations on beating The Vanishing of Ethan Carter! :)

                      5. Murder Scene Chronologies

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
=============================================================================

Train Tracks Murder
-------------------
Scene #1: At the very beginning of the train tracks, you'll see a man looking
at a boy tied to the train tracks.

The Church and Cemetery Murder
------------------------------
Scene #1: The woman and the bearded man looking at each other.

The Mines Murder
----------------
Scene #1: This scene is of lady and the bearded man walking into this main

The Dam House Murder
--------------------
Scene #1: At the mines exit, man with axe is about to ambush the other man.

The Burned Down House Murder
----------------------------
Scene #1: This scene has the old man holding two oil cans, with the boy
looking curiously at him.

                      6. Frequently Asked Questions

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
=============================================================================

Q: Is this game any good!?
A: It is very good. It has an 82 on MetaCritic, but will surely make some top
10 lists for Game of the Year. (And yes, I always put this question first
in my FAQ sections, because it always gets asked.)

      =---=---=---=---=---=---=---=---=---=---=---=---=---=---=---=

Q: Are there any guns?
A: YES! It's actually an achievement! When I first posted this guide, I was
unaware of this. I think it was a new thing then? But to get one of the
achievements you have to find some weapons. Here is a video that shows how
  to get it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jPF5IbY7uw8

      =---=---=---=---=---=---=---=---=---=---=---=---=---=---=---=

Q: Can you die in this game?
A: No. BUT, at the mines maze, you can get jumped and have to restart it. I
  wouldn't consider that "dying," though.

      =---=---=---=---=---=---=---=---=---=---=---=---=---=---=---=

Q: Why do all the clocks say 7:00 and 7:04?
A: A slightly ambiguous story element, for sure. But look at the 'clocks
during the final ending scenes; it might shed some light.

      =---=---=---=---=---=---=---=---=---=---=---=---=---=---=---=

Q: Do I have to do the stuff in the order of the guide?
A: I mean, you can -- it'd be the most logical -- but the game is set up so
you find things on your own. This means backtracking -- so missing events
  and coming back is fine.

      =---=---=---=---=---=---=---=---=---=---=---=---=---=---=---=

Q: How are these graphics so good?
A: Apparently, the developers modeled them after real-life images, and
that's why it looks so good. Indeed, you can look up the images of the
"real-life" locations of this game, such as the bridge, forest, etc. Why
this revelation hasn't seeped over to AAA titles, we may never know. (Devs
actually DO do this, but not to the same degree as here.)

      =---=---=---=---=---=---=---=---=---=---=---=---=---=---=---=

Q: I'm stuck on this chronology...
A: Look it up in the chronology section. Play around first, though!

      =---=---=---=---=---=---=---=---=---=---=---=---=---=---=---=

Q: I can't *start* this chronology...
A: Look at the "checklist" in the guide for the section you're on. Make sure
you've inspected everything and put everything in the right place.

      =---=---=---=---=---=---=---=---=---=---=---=---=---=---=---=

Q: So, what happened to Ethan? Did he really vanish?
A: I said I wouldn't talk about spoilers, so you'll just have to play the
  game to find out! :)

      =---=---=---=---=---=---=---=---=---=---=---=---=---=---=---=

Q: How do I know what I forgot?
A: For almost all events and puzzles, there's a somewhat distinct "ending"
to them that includes reading a letter. So look for either a letter or a
chronology to figure out if you've completed a part of the game. You can
also look on the map at the very end to see what you missed.

      =---=---=---=---=---=---=---=---=---=---=---=---=---=---=---=

Q: When will this come to PS4?
A: It did on July 15th, 2015! I'm so happy it has; this game deserves a
  wider audience!

      =---=---=---=---=---=---=---=---=---=---=---=---=---=---=---=

Q: How long does it take to complete this game?
A: If you've never played it before, you can expect it to take at least a
few hours, depending on how good you are at puzzles and detective games.

      =---=---=---=---=---=---=---=---=---=---=---=---=---=---=---=

Q: What if I have more questions?
A: Feel free to contact me -- day or night, rain or storm -- via my email.
You can find my contact information in the -- well -- "Contact
